Start with Persona 5 Royal if what you loved about Bully was living through a school calendar, meeting classmates and following a long character arc. Choose Lost Judgment when bullying investigations and hand-to-hand action matter more than playing as a student. Detention is the concentrated, disturbing choice, while The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel and Fire Emblem: Three Houses reinterpret school life through fantasy or military RPG systems.

What makes a good follow-up to Bully?

Bully: Scholarship Edition is unusual because its appeal is not just fighting. Rockstar described it as bringing its “groundbreaking, original gameplay and humorous tongue-in-cheek storytelling” to “an entirely new setting: the schoolyard.” That combination gives the game several identities at once: a school routine, a social story, physical confrontations, exploration and a satirical view of school hierarchies.

The five games below each preserve a different part of that formula. None recreates Bully’s open-world schoolyard satire in full. The useful question is which ingredient you want to keep:

  • Calendar, classmates and a long personal arc: Persona 5 Royal.
  • Bullying allegations, investigation and fights: Lost Judgment.
  • A short, oppressive story set almost entirely around school: Detention.
  • Class relationships, field trips and a school calendar in a fantasy RPG: The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel.
  • Teaching students while managing a calendar and tactical battles: Fire Emblem: Three Houses.

Persona 5 Royal: the best overall choice for school routine and relationships

If your favorite Bully moments involved going to class, moving through a social world and watching relationships change over time, Persona 5 Royal is the strongest first recommendation. Atlus’s premise starts with a protagonist “forced to transfer to a high school in Tokyo.” School is not a decorative backdrop: time is divided between class and after-school decisions, and those decisions shape the rhythm of the story.

How its school year works

The game asks you to manage a schedule. Class time is followed by choices such as seeing a movie, shopping, visiting a bathhouse or taking part-time work. The calendar also supplies larger communal events, including sports festivals, beach days, cultural festivals and field trips. That pattern creates the same sense of an academic year progressing while your social circle becomes more important.

The similarity to Bully is therefore structural rather than literal. You are not roaming a satirical boarding-school sandbox as a mischievous student. You are making time-sensitive decisions inside a more formal role-playing framework, with school, leisure and relationships competing for attention.

Why it is the safest recommendation

  • It combines the most requested elements: classes, classmates, after-school activities and a long character arc.
  • The calendar has visible variety: everyday routines are interrupted by festivals, trips and special days.
  • Relationships are a central activity: social choices are not an optional side theme added to an unrelated adventure.
  • It has a substantial role-playing scope: choose it when you want a long-form commitment rather than a short school vignette.

What to expect before choosing it

Persona 5 Royal is schedule-driven and socially expansive. That means less moment-to-moment freedom than Bully’s schoolyard roaming and more attention to deciding how to spend each available period. Its conflict is presented through role-playing systems rather than the straightforward physical confrontations that define much of Bully.

Atlus lists October 21, 2022 as the release date for Persona 5 Royal. That date identifies the edition referenced here; check the edition available for your platform and region before buying.

Lost Judgment: the closest match for bullying investigations and fights

Choose Lost Judgment when the word “bully” in your search is more important than the word “school.” SEGA’s story places detective Takayuki Yagami undercover at Seiryo High School to investigate bullying allegations. The viewpoint changes the fantasy: you are not a student trying to survive school politics, but an adult investigator entering the school to uncover what is happening.

Why its premise fits

The school conflict is the central investigative problem. You follow allegations, examine the people and institutions around them, and use school stories and club activities to work through the case. That gives the setting a practical purpose: clubs and student life are ways to understand the school, not simply a timetable to complete.

The game also keeps physical confrontation close to the story. If you remember Bully primarily for hand-to-hand scuffles and the feeling that school conflicts could become dangerous, this is the most direct thematic alternative in the list.

Where it differs from Bully

  • Player role: Yagami is an adult detective operating undercover, not a teenager attending school.
  • Story shape: investigation drives the school sections, rather than a student’s everyday schedule driving the whole game.
  • Social freedom: clubs and school stories support the investigation, so the experience is action-investigation focused rather than a broad school-life simulation.

Pick it for the combination of bullying allegations, detective work and hand-to-hand action. Do not pick it expecting a pure school calendar or a student-centered coming-of-age story.

Detention: a concentrated school story with psychological horror

Detention is the right answer when you want the school itself to feel oppressive rather than lively. PlayStation describes two students trapped at Greenwood High School in a fictionalized 1960s Taiwan under martial law. The school is both the setting and the source of the game’s pressure, producing an atmospheric psychological-horror story rooted in East Asian history.

What makes it distinctive

The game narrows the scope to two students and their ordeal. Instead of balancing classes, clubs, errands and a large social network, you move through a story designed to maintain tension. That makes it the most concentrated school narrative here and the least like an open-ended school-life sandbox.

The historical setting matters to the tone. “1960s Taiwan under martial law” is not a generic haunted-school premise; it establishes a fictionalized political context for the horror. Expect dread, isolation and psychological pressure rather than the comic schoolyard satire associated with Bully.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it if you want a short, focused story rather than a long RPG.
  • Choose it if atmosphere and psychological horror matter more than combat variety.
  • Choose it if you are interested in a school narrative shaped by a specific historical setting.

Skip it if your priority is making friends, customizing a daily timetable or freely wandering between school activities. Its strength is concentration, not breadth.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel: school life inside a military RPG

Trails of Cold Steel is a strong choice for readers who want classmates and a calendar but do not require a modern school. GamesRadar’s comparison describes a military-school class, field-trip quests, a calendar structure and relationship building among classmates.

How the academy changes the formula

The school is an institution preparing students for military life, so lessons and field trips connect directly to the larger fantasy setting. The calendar gives the year a clear rhythm, while field-trip quests let the class experience the world beyond campus. Relationships grow within that cohort, making the group feel more like a class with shared responsibilities than a collection of unrelated party members.

This is the closest option for someone who wants the shape of a school-life RPG: attend an academy, spend time with classmates, follow a schedule and take trips that expand the story. Its fantasy setting and turn-based combat make it a less direct match for Bully’s street-level tone.

Trade-offs

  • Modern realism: low; the academy belongs to a fantasy world.
  • Combat: turn-based RPG battles rather than improvised schoolyard fights.
  • School routine: high in structure, especially through the calendar and field trips.
  • Relationships: central to the class experience, but framed within a larger military and political adventure.

Choose it when the daily rhythm, class identity and long-form character development are more important than realism or comedy.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses: the tactical academy option

Fire Emblem: Three Houses turns school life into a teaching and strategy system. GamesRadar describes students attached to one of three houses, with the player teaching them while balancing battles, school activities and a calendar.

The academy as a decision system

Your role is not simply to attend school. You guide students, choose how to spend academy time and prepare for tactical battles. The calendar links ordinary school activities to consequential strategic decisions, while the three-house structure gives the student body a built-in set of loyalties and contrasts.

  • Build and command your optimal team to take down otherworldly Shadows and climb closer to the truth.

That produces strong character bonds, but the bonds are inseparable from leadership and war. The academy is a fantasy institution, not a modern schoolyard, and the central conflicts are tactical rather than personal fights in corridors or on sports fields.

Why it may be your best fit

  • You want agency over other students: teaching and managing a house are core activities.
  • You prefer tactical battles: school choices feed directly into a strategy game.
  • You value consequential relationships: bonds develop alongside decisions about training and conflict.
  • You enjoy a calendar framework: academy life alternates with battles and scheduled events.

Pick Three Houses for the academy-and-strategy combination. It is a poor substitute for Bully if what you want is a modern school, free roaming or satirical mischief.

Teaching students and making strategic choices around an academy Fire Emblem: Three Houses Three houses, school activities, a calendar and tactical battles make the player responsible for a student group.

How the five games differ on the six important comparison axes

School-life presence

Persona 5 Royal makes school and after-school time the broadest part of the experience. Lost Judgment also spends substantial time at school, but the school is being investigated by an outsider. Detention keeps school central by trapping its characters there. Trails of Cold Steel and Three Houses use academies as the organizing structure for fantasy or military RPGs.

Narrative tone

Persona 5 Royal is the most expansive coming-of-age option. Lost Judgment treats bullying as a crime and investigation problem. Detention is the only outright psychological-horror choice. Trails of Cold Steel and Three Houses move into fantasy, with the latter placing academy relationships alongside war and strategy.

Combat and conflict

For physical action, choose Lost Judgment. For role-playing combat paired with a social schedule, choose Persona 5 Royal. Trails of Cold Steel uses turn-based RPG combat, while Three Houses uses tactical battles. Detention is defined by story and horror tension rather than a combat-centered school routine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Freedom and pacing

Persona 5 Royal offers the widest range of social and leisure decisions, but those choices are constrained by a schedule. Lost Judgment gives school activities a case-driven purpose. Detention is linear and concentrated. Trails of Cold Steel and Three Houses use calendars to alternate planned school activity with quests or battles.

Relationships

For the broadest social network, start with Persona 5 Royal. For a class cohort, Trails of Cold Steel is the clearest fit. Three Houses makes relationships part of teaching and house management. Lost Judgment builds connections through school stories and clubs, while Detention focuses on the relationship and ordeal of two students.

A practical selection order

  1. Start with Persona 5 Royal if you have not decided which part of Bully matters most. It covers school routine, social decisions and a long character arc better than the other options.
  2. Move to Lost Judgment if the first thing you miss is confronting bullies, following allegations and using hand-to-hand action.
  3. Choose Detention when you want a shorter, more intense experience and are comfortable replacing comedy with psychological horror.
  4. Choose Trails of Cold Steel when a fantasy military academy, field trips and turn-based combat sound appealing.
  5. Choose Three Houses when you want to teach a student group and make academy decisions that feed into tactical battles.

Expectations to set before you buy

  • No exact substitute exists: none of these games combines Bully’s open-world schoolyard, satire, student perspective and physical comedy in one package.
  • “School-life” can mean different things: in Persona 5 Royal it means managing a social calendar; in Lost Judgment it means investigating a school; in Detention it means being trapped there; in Trails of Cold Steel it means belonging to a military class; and in Three Houses it means teaching students before battles.
  • Genre matters as much as setting: the school may be familiar, but the surrounding game can be social role-playing, detective action, horror, turn-based fantasy or tactical strategy.
  • Check the edition available in your region: the release information cited here identifies Persona 5 Royal as released on October 21, 2022, but platform editions and availability can differ.

Final recommendation

Persona 5 Royal is the best overall follow-up to Bully because it treats school time, after-school choices, classmates and a long character arc as the heart of the experience. Lost Judgment is the sharper choice for bullying investigations and physical action. Detention delivers the most focused school story, while Trails of Cold Steel and Fire Emblem: Three Houses are better for readers who want school calendars and student bonds inside fantasy RPG or tactical structures.
