Start with Disco Elysium: The Final Cut if you want the closest match for dense dialogue, detective work, and character-building through skills. Choose Pentiment for a slower historical mystery, Undertale for a compact moral-choice adventure, Baldur’s Gate 3 for the widest party and character reactivity, or Mass Effect Legendary Edition for one connected science-fiction trilogy.

| A historical mystery with long-term consequences | Pentiment | Your background and decisions shape a Bavarian community, with effects that can unfold across generations. |
| A short, unusual game where morality changes the ending | Undertale | Choosing whether to fight, spare, or kill is central to how the story resolves. |
| Maximum role-playing and party reactivity | Baldur’s Gate 3 | Origin, class, race, companion, and quest choices combine into a highly variable campaign. |

What makes these story-driven RPGs different
“Story-driven RPG” is more specific than “an RPG with a plot.” The defining feature is that the narrative propels the journey and that choices have meaningful consequences. The strongest examples make your decisions part of the game’s structure rather than occasional dialogue branches.
These five games deliver that feeling in different ways. Disco Elysium turns skills and conversations into the main form of play. Pentiment asks you to investigate a murder while living with the consequences of your judgments over decades. Undertale makes violence and mercy mechanical and narrative decisions at once. Baldur’s Gate 3 spreads reactivity across a large party-based campaign. Mass Effect Legendary Edition carries decisions and relationships through three connected games.

- Do you want to read and talk more than fight?
- Should consequences unfold within one investigation, across a community’s history, or over an entire trilogy?
- Do you prefer a compact adventure or a large campaign with many builds and companions?
- Is the central choice about personal identity, community responsibility, mercy, or long-term loyalty?
1. Disco Elysium: The Final Cut
Why it is the best starting point
Disco Elysium: The Final Cut is the strongest recommendation when what you loved about a hidden gem was its writing rather than its combat. ZA/UM describes it as an award-winning open-world role-playing game in which you are a detective with a unique skill system and a city block to explore. GamesRadar’s current story-driven ranking places it first.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.

You play an amnesiac detective, Harry Du Bois, trying to solve a case while reconstructing who he is. The investigation is not a corridor between action scenes: conversations, observations, failed checks, and internal arguments are the substance of the game. Investing in skills changes what Harry notices, what he can attempt, and how he interprets people and evidence.
“You’re a detective with a unique skill system at your disposal and a whole city block to carve your path across…” — ZA/UM
How choices matter
Your decisions shape both the investigation and the detective. Skill allocation determines which lines of inquiry are available, while conversational choices define Harry’s attitude and relationships. The game allows you to pursue the case through different approaches instead of presenting one correct sequence of clues.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThat makes it an excellent answer to “what should I play after Disco Elysium?” if you want another game in which role-playing is expressed through thought, language, and personality. It is also the least suitable choice here if you want frequent tactical combat or a conventional loot-and-leveling loop.
Best fit and trade-offs
- Choose it for: detective fiction, dense dialogue, internal conflict, skill-driven character building, and a self-contained city mystery.
- Expect: substantial reading, conversations that can fail or veer unexpectedly, and a story whose major turns depend on interpretation as much as equipment.
- Skip it for now if: you want a large party, extensive combat systems, or a multi-game continuity arc.
2. Pentiment
A historical mystery that remembers what you do
Pentiment is the right follow-up when you want another investigation but prefer a slower, more historically grounded setting. Obsidian Entertainment places the story in Tassing and Keirsau Abbey in early-16th-century Bavaria. Steam lists it as released on 14 November 2022, developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Xbox Game Studios.

You choose academic and social backgrounds before investigating murders that threaten the community. Those choices affect how people read you and which perspectives you can access. The setting is presented through the visual language of illuminated manuscripts and period illustration, reinforcing that this is a game about reading, testimony, belief, and memory rather than power fantasy.
Consequences across generations
Pentiment’s defining feature is its time scale. Decisions do not end when a chapter closes. The people of Tassing live with what you decide, and the effects can play out over generations. Obsidian says that “each decision you make can have a profound impact on the community’s future.”
That structure changes how you investigate. You are not simply collecting enough evidence to unlock a final answer; you are choosing whom to trust, which explanation to support, and what kind of future the community will inherit. The game includes multiple endings, but its more important consequence is the altered history of the place you have spent time understanding.
Best fit and trade-offs
- Choose it for: historical mystery, social investigation, background-based role-playing, illustration and reading, and consequences that extend beyond one protagonist.
- Expect: a deliberate pace and a text-led experience in which observation and conversation matter more than conventional combat progression.
- Skip it for now if: you want a broad fantasy world, constant action, or a short story that resolves without a long historical aftermath.
3. Undertale
A compact game where mercy is a system
Undertale is the best choice when you want a shorter, stranger experience in which morality is not an optional role-playing theme. GamesRadar describes a human entering a world of monsters, with the option not to fight or kill. The choices you make determine how the story ends. Its listed release date is 15 September 2015, with versions for PC, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.
The game’s central question is immediate: what do you do when an encounter presents the possibility of violence? You can fight, spare, or kill, and those decisions affect the way the adventure unfolds. Encounters are therefore narrative decisions as well as gameplay challenges. A peaceful approach is not merely a self-imposed restriction; it changes how the world responds to you.

Why it works after larger RPGs
Undertale’s scope is compact compared with the other recommendations. That economy is an advantage if you have just finished a long RPG and want a story that reaches its point without requiring another hundred-hour commitment. It also makes replaying attractive: different choices can lead to different outcomes, so a second run can examine the consequences of a route you avoided the first time.

The game’s unusual tone is part of its appeal. It can be funny, unsettling, affectionate, or confrontational within the same journey. Its characters and encounters are designed around the idea that the way you treat other beings is the story.
Best fit and trade-offs
- Choose it for: moral choice, memorable encounters, a compact adventure, and endings shaped by your treatment of enemies.
- Expect: a deliberately unconventional presentation and a game that rewards attention to how mechanics and narrative interact.
- Skip it for now if: you want realistic history, a large party, or a continuous cinematic trilogy.
4. Baldur’s Gate 3
The broadest role-playing sandbox in this group
Baldur’s Gate 3 is the recommendation for players who want the largest range of character, party, and quest outcomes. GamesRadar describes a campaign built around custom or origin characters, classes, races, companions, and decisions that shape a journey through the Sword Coast. Its listed release date is 3 August 2023, with releases for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X.
Where Disco Elysium concentrates reactivity inside a city investigation, Baldur’s Gate 3 distributes it across a large multi-region campaign. Your character’s origin, class, and race affect how you approach situations. Companion choices add another layer: whom you recruit, support, oppose, or bring into a quest can change the party’s available perspectives and the direction of events.
How to approach its freedom
The game is easiest to enjoy when you treat your build and party as a role-playing decision rather than a search for a perfect solution. There is no need to know every possible branch before starting. Pick an identity you want to inhabit, make decisions that follow from it, and let the consequences create the campaign.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Its turn-based RPG structure gives you time to consider positioning, abilities, and the order in which you tackle problems. The same freedom that creates memorable outcomes can also produce uncertainty: quests can resolve in unexpected ways, and a choice that seems minor may close or open later possibilities.
Best fit and trade-offs
- Choose it for: build freedom, party relationships, companion reactivity, origin stories, and a large campaign with multiple regions and quest outcomes.
- Expect: more systems to learn and a longer commitment than the compact recommendations in this list.
- Skip it for now if: you want a tightly controlled mystery, minimal combat, or a story that can be completed in a small number of sessions.
5. Mass Effect Legendary Edition
One science-fiction story across three games
Mass Effect Legendary Edition is the best fit when continuity matters more than a single self-contained mystery. GamesRadar describes Commander Shepard’s trilogy-long struggle against the Reapers, companion relationships, and a continuing story that spans three games. The Legendary Edition is listed with a 14 May 2021 release date.
The key attraction is accumulation. Decisions made in one game can matter to the continuing arc, while relationships with companions develop over the trilogy rather than resetting at the next installment. Shepard’s campaign is therefore less about one isolated twist and more about watching a crew, a conflict, and a set of personal commitments evolve over time.
Why it feels different from the other recommendations
Mass Effect uses a third-person action-RPG structure with dialogue and relationship decisions at its center. That makes it a bridge between a character-driven narrative game and a more traditional combat-oriented RPG. You are still making consequential choices, but the interaction style is more action-focused than in Disco Elysium or Pentiment.
Its trilogy format also changes the ideal starting point: plan to play the games in order so that the continuing story and companion relationships have room to develop. The appeal is the long arc, not a single self-contained chapter.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Best fit and trade-offs
- Choose it for: science-fiction, companion loyalty, a continuing protagonist, and decisions that carry through a three-game arc.
- Expect: a substantial time commitment and a blend of third-person action, exploration, and dialogue.
- Skip it for now if: you want a one-location mystery or a compact morality experiment.
Comparison by the decisions you make
| Game | Narrative agency | Primary interaction | Story scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disco Elysium: The Final Cut | Skill allocation and conversational choices determine how the investigation and protagonist develop. | Investigation and dialogue. | A self-contained mystery in one city block. |
| Pentiment | Background selection and community-shaping decisions alter the future of Tassing. | Investigation, reading, illustration, and choice. | Decades in one Bavarian community. |
| Undertale | Mercy, violence, and killing choices influence the route and ending. | Exploration, encounters, and moral choice. | A compact adventure. |
| Baldur’s Gate 3 | Origin, class, race, companion, and quest choices produce broad variation. | Turn-based RPG exploration and combat. | A large, multi-region campaign. |

What to play after Disco Elysium
If Disco Elysium was your reference point, choose by the part you want to preserve:
- For another investigation, but with history and community consequences: play Pentiment.
- For the same interest in choices, expressed through mercy and violence: play Undertale.
- For more character-building and a much larger party-driven campaign: play Baldur’s Gate 3.
- For relationships and decisions that continue beyond one game: play Mass Effect Legendary Edition.
There is no single “closest clone” here. Pentiment is the nearest match in investigation and text-heavy pacing; Undertale matches the emphasis on consequences in a smaller package; Baldur’s Gate 3 expands role-playing freedom into a full party campaign; and Mass Effect Legendary Edition turns consequence into long-form continuity.
