God of War is the strongest parent-child alternative, while Red Dead Redemption 2 offers a slower, much larger character drama. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is the most psychologically intense option, and Until Dawn is the best branching horror story.

“Similar” can mean several different things. The Last of Us combines a protective relationship, stealth against dangerous enemies, resource scarcity, cinematic pacing and a serious emotional tone. No alternative reproduces all of those elements at once. Use the following priorities to choose deliberately.
#1 Best Overall
- Spacious Design: Measuring 21.1" wide and 14.1" deep, our lap desk comfortably fits most laptops up to 15.6". Extra room for accessories ensures convenience.
- Enhanced Functionality: Packed with handy features, including a 5x9" precision tracking mouse pad and a built-in phone slot for seamless work or video calls. Plus, enjoy ergonomic support with the integrated cushioned wrist rest.

Protective relationships
Joel and Ellie’s bond gives the series its emotional engine. A Plague Tale: Requiem centers a similarly protective sibling relationship, while God of War builds its story around a father and son. The Walking Dead treats care, responsibility and mentorship as choices you actively perform. The other recommendations use an ensemble, an individual protagonist or a group of survivors instead.
Stealth and vulnerability
If you prefer hiding, distracting enemies and deciding when to conserve supplies, start with A Plague Tale: Requiem. It is the closest match to the tense stealth-survival sections of The Last of Us. Hellblade creates vulnerability through atmosphere and close encounters, but it is not a scavenging stealth game. God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2 are more comfortable with direct combat.
Player choice
The Walking Dead and Until Dawn make decisions the central mechanic. Dialogue, timed responses and moral choices shape relationships and later events. The Last of Us is primarily authored and linear, so these games match its emotional stakes while changing how the story is delivered.

Scale and pacing
Hellblade and Until Dawn are concentrated experiences. A Plague Tale is also focused and cinematic. Red Dead Redemption 2 asks you to accept a slower build across a broad world. Choose by the amount of exploration and downtime you want between major story scenes.
A Plague Tale: Requiem: the closest overall match
A Plague Tale: Requiem is the best first recommendation when what you miss is the combination of stealth, survival pressure and a relationship that drives every dangerous decision. The game follows a protective sibling dynamic, placing emotional responsibility inside a hostile world rather than treating the story and gameplay as separate layers.
Why it resembles The Last of Us
- Stealth is often safer than open confrontation, creating the same pressure to observe patrols and plan movement.
- Threats and limited options make encounters feel dangerous even when the protagonist has weapons or abilities.
- The relationship at the center of the campaign gives travel and survival a personal purpose.
- The presentation favors a directed, cinematic journey over an enormous open world.
Where it differs
Its setting, enemy rules and visual identity are distinct, and its sibling story is not a copy of Joel and Ellie. The experience can be more oppressive and fantastical, with danger shaped by the game’s own systems rather than by The Last of Us’s infected and human factions. Expect a linear adventure with stealth as a primary tool, not an interchangeable version of Naughty Dog’s combat.
Who should choose it
Choose Requiem if you want the nearest match to tense stealth encounters and a protective relationship. Microsoft’s Xbox ranking places it among highly rated single-player games, and comparison coverage identifies the A Plague Tale series as a stealth-oriented alternative. Confirm whether the specific edition you want is available on your PlayStation, Xbox or PC storefront.

The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series: the best emotional choice-driven alternative
The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series is the strongest choice when your favorite part of The Last of Us is the bond between two people and the painful decisions made to protect one another. It is less about mastering stealth and more about deciding what kind of guardian, friend or survivor you will be.
What the collection contains
PlayStation describes the collection as including all four seasons, the 400 Days downloadable content and The Walking Dead: Michonne. That makes it a substantial, continuous narrative rather than a single short episode. Check the store description for the edition sold in your region, since included content and platform packaging can differ.
Why the Lee-and-Clementine relationship works
GameSpot highlights the relationship between Lee and Clementine and the way player choices shape Clementine’s development. Your decisions affect conversations, loyalties and the way Clementine understands the people around her. The emotional impact comes from committing to choices under time pressure, not from finding a universally correct answer.
How its gameplay differs
- Exploration and dialogue carry more weight than tactical combat.
- Timed prompts can force a response before you have complete information.
- Consequences may appear later, so a choice can matter even when the immediate result seems small.
- The episodic structure gives the story a television-like rhythm rather than The Last of Us’s continuous action progression.
Pick this collection if you want a character-first story and are comfortable with less traditional action. It is the closest emotional choice-driven match, not the closest stealth match.
God of War (2018) and Ragnarök: the best parent-child journey
God of War and God of War Ragnarök offer a different answer to the same structural question: how does a dangerous journey change a parent and child? GameSpot explicitly compares the father-child road-trip structure of God of War with The Last of Us.
Why the relationship is the draw
Kratos and Atreus must travel together while negotiating grief, trust, responsibility and the consequences of the parent’s past. The relationship develops through shared movement, arguments, lessons and victories, so the journey itself becomes the source of character change.
What you get instead of stealth survival
These games are action adventures with substantial combat depth. Encounters emphasize timing, positioning, equipment and ability use rather than avoiding nearly every fight. Exploration is broader, with optional paths and activities that sit alongside the main narrative. The tone can be intimate and tragic, but it also includes mythic spectacle and extended combat sequences.

Which player should choose it?
Choose God of War if you want the parent-child structure but prefer active combat and a more expansive adventure. Choose Ragnarök when you want the continuation of that relationship and a larger dramatic scope. Confirm which entries and editions are offered on your platform and in your territory before purchase.
Red Dead Redemption 2: the best expansive character drama
Red Dead Redemption 2 is the right recommendation when you value carefully developed characters more than a tight, relentlessly paced campaign. It appears in Microsoft’s highly rated Xbox single-player ranking and is frequently cited among story-driven alternatives.
Its central strength
The game spends considerable time building an ensemble and examining loyalty, belonging and the collapse of a way of life. Relationships are distributed across the group rather than concentrated in a single guardian-child pair. That broader cast allows quieter scenes, optional conversations and gradual changes that a more linear survival story has less room to include.
The trade-off for The Last of Us players
The world is open and much larger, so the dramatic build is slower. Travel, side activities and exploration can interrupt the main plot. Gunplay is more prominent than stealth, and the rhythm alternates between long character scenes, open-world tasks and bursts of violence.
When it is the right next game
Choose it if you want a mature character epic and are willing to trade compact pacing for breadth. Do not choose it expecting the same claustrophobic survival pressure or a single central relationship. Its appeal is the patience to let an entire community and its conflicts develop.
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice: the most psychologically intense option
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is a focused, psychologically intense action adventure. Microsoft lists it among highly rated Xbox single-player action-adventure games. It is a strong fit for players who remember the dread, grief and mental pressure of The Last of Us more than its scavenging systems.
What makes it distinctive
The campaign stays close to Senua and her perception of the world. Environmental challenges, sound design and combat reinforce an internal struggle, creating an experience that is intimate even when the setting becomes threatening. The result is more concentrated than an open-world drama and more psychologically demanding than a conventional action game.

Important differences
There is no equivalent to the Joel-and-Ellie road structure, and stealth is not the defining loop. The game’s tension comes from uncertainty, atmosphere and close encounters. Its subject matter can be disturbing, so consider your tolerance for psychological horror before starting.
Who should play it
Pick Hellblade for a short, tightly directed campaign built around mood and internal conflict. It is a better match for players seeking emotional intensity and horror than for players seeking crafting, open exploration or a large cast.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Until Dawn: the best branching cinematic horror
Until Dawn is the recommendation for players who want a movie-like horror story in which decisions determine who survives and how events unfold. PlayStation’s narrative-games guide describes the PS5 and PC remake as a choice-focused adventure with revised narrative elements.
How its structure differs
Instead of following one authored route, the game presents an ensemble and asks you to make rapid decisions under pressure. Characters can live, die, trust one another or split apart depending on your actions. That makes replay meaningful: a second run can reveal scenes and outcomes that were unavailable before.
Why it belongs on this list
- It treats relationships as a source of suspense, not merely background exposition.
- It uses cinematic direction to keep the story moving between playable decisions.
- It makes uncertainty and fear central, as The Last of Us does during its most dangerous encounters.
- It offers branching consequences rather than a single fixed conclusion.
Choose the PS5/PC remake when you want the current presentation described by PlayStation. Verify the exact edition and regional listing, particularly if you are comparing it with an older release.

Platform and edition checklist
Because these games have multiple editions, remakes and territory-specific catalogs, use this checklist before you buy:
- Identify your hardware: PlayStation 4 or 5, Xbox console, Windows PC or another supported PC storefront.
- Search the exact game title and edition, not only the series name. Until Dawn, for example, has a PS5/PC remake described separately from earlier releases.
- Read the product description for included seasons, downloadable content and bonus material. The Definitive Series is described as containing four seasons, 400 Days and Michonne.
- Check whether the listing is a physical disc, digital purchase, subscription catalog entry or cloud option. Catalog membership and cloud availability can change.
- Confirm the language, age rating, accessibility options and storage requirement shown for your territory.
- Check whether a save file, upgrade path or cross-generation entitlement applies to the edition you are considering.
No single availability list remains accurate for every territory and date. Store pages are the authoritative place to confirm that a specific edition can be purchased or played on your system.
