There is no single best Apex Pro number for every game or player. A reliable starting point is low, controllable actuation on movement keys, deeper actuation on keys you hit accidentally, and Rapid Trigger only where quick release and re-pressing help. Change one variable at a time, test in a low-stakes practice mode, and keep the fastest setup that remains consistent.
The exact procedure depends on whether you have an Apex Pro TKL 2023, a legacy Apex Pro, an OLED-equipped model, or a newer Apex Pro generation. SteelSeries documents the controls and features, but its official pages do not establish a universal competitive preset or a measured performance advantage for one setting.
A practical starting profile
Use this as a baseline rather than a claim that these values are optimal. The TKL 2023 offers ten actuation levels; the numbers below refer to those levels. Newer models may expose different scales or software controls, so confirm your exact keyboard first.

These are practical starting points inferred from how the controls work, not SteelSeries-certified competitive settings. If a key activates while you are merely resting on it, increase its actuation depth one step at a time. If a movement input feels delayed or requires excessive force, lower it until the input is dependable.

What actuation, Rapid Trigger and Rapid Tap actually do
Actuation point
Actuation is the travel distance at which a key press is registered. On the Apex Pro TKL 2023, SteelSeries says lower levels activate with a lighter, faster press, while higher levels require the switch to travel farther. That creates a direct trade-off: shallow actuation can make repeated movement feel responsive, but it also leaves less physical movement between a finger resting on the key and an intentional press.
Do not assume a level number has the same millimeter value across generations. The legacy Apex Pro mapping is documented separately, while newer products can use different switch and firmware implementations.
Rapid Trigger
Rapid Trigger changes the reset behavior of a key. SteelSeries describes it as resetting when you release the key, rather than waiting for a fixed reset point after a full press. That can help when an action depends on releasing and pressing again quickly, such as repeated movement corrections. It is adjustable, so sensitivity should be tuned for stable input rather than automatically set to the most sensitive option. Rapid Tap is different
Rapid Tap is a separate feature. SteelSeries describes it as favoring the latest key press and positions it for strafing keys. Rapid Trigger controls reset behavior; Rapid Tap changes how simultaneous or alternating inputs are prioritized. Do not treat a Rapid Tap preset as a Rapid Trigger sensitivity setting, and do not enable both without testing how your game interprets the resulting inputs.

Identify your exact Apex Pro before changing anything
Look at the product name in GG, on the keyboard label or in your purchase information. “Apex Pro” covers several generations and form factors, and the controls are not interchangeable by assumption.

SteelSeries’ product page lists OmniPoint 2.0 Apex Pro TKL Wireless (2023), Apex Pro Mini models and OmniPoint 3.0 Apex Pro Gen 3 products. The presence of a feature on that page is not proof that your particular keyboard supports it, so use the exact model shown in GG.
How to set actuation on an Apex Pro TKL 2023
Use the keyboard without GG
- Press and hold the keyboard’s SteelSeries function key.
- Press
Oto move through the ten actuation levels in one direction orIto move in the other direction, following the key legends and on-keyboard indicators. - Read the selected level on the number row. Start with a low but controllable level on movement keys rather than immediately choosing the shallowest setting.
- Release the function key and test the key in a practice area. If you produce movement or jumps while resting your finger, select a deeper level.

Use GG Engine when you need per-key control
Open GG, select your keyboard, and enter the Engine configuration for the active profile. The exact panel can change with firmware and product generation. Select a key or key group, adjust its actuation control, save the profile, and test it before changing another group. If the current interface does not show a control described for another model, do not substitute a value from that model’s instructions.

How to change actuation on legacy Apex Pro models
For the legacy Apex Pro TKL and full-size keyboards covered by SteelSeries’ support article, GG Engine uses an actuation slider or a directly entered value. The article says to update to GG 27.0 or later for the described update path.

Those values are specific to the legacy models in SteelSeries’ legacy Apex Pro support article. A level 1 setting is not a universal 0.2 mm setting for every Apex Pro generation.
How to use the OLED controls
On the Apex Pro and Apex Pro TKL models covered by SteelSeries’ manual, hold the OLED menu button for four seconds. Turn the volume roller to ACTUATION, press the roller to enter, and choose level 1–10. Pressing an OmniPoint switch previews that switch’s actuation point on the OLED. This is useful for checking a key physically instead of guessing from a profile name.
The manual procedure is documented in SteelSeries’ Apex Pro/Apex Pro TKL features and user manual. If your keyboard lacks the described OLED menu, use its GG controls or model-specific instructions instead.

Enable and tune Rapid Trigger
Keyboard shortcut
SteelSeries says Apex Pro keyboards can toggle Rapid Trigger with the SteelSeries key plus T. On supported TKL and full-size models with the documented OLED controls, you can also hold the media button, open Actuation, and click the roller to toggle it. Number-row lighting and an OLED lightning icon indicate status on the described models. Consult SteelSeries’ Rapid Trigger instructions if the shortcut does not produce the expected indicator.
Choose keys deliberately
Start with movement keys if your game benefits from frequent release and re-pressing. Leave high-consequence keys without Rapid Trigger until you have a reason to add it; an overly sensitive key can retrigger from small finger movements. You can use different behavior by key when your model and GG profile support per-key configuration.
Adjust sensitivity for consistency
Begin at a sensitivity that does not generate repeated inputs during ordinary finger movement. If a key releases too late for your technique, increase sensitivity in a small step. If the game registers unintended stops, starts or repeated actions, reduce sensitivity or raise the key’s actuation depth. Test each change while standing still, walking, strafing and performing the action repeatedly; a setting that feels quick in a menu can be unreliable under pressure.

Profiles for common gaming situations
Fast movement and strafing
Set WASD to a low TKL 2023 level, enable Rapid Trigger on those keys, and test short taps as well as long holds. If your character oscillates or stops when you intend to hold a direction, increase Rapid Trigger’s release threshold or use a deeper actuation level.

Mixed action games
Keep movement low, use medium actuation for jump, crouch and reload, and enable Rapid Trigger only on the movement keys that benefit from it. This separates frequent directional corrections from actions where an accidental press is costly.
Competitive play with accidental-input problems
Raise actuation on any key that activates from a resting finger, then tune one key at a time. A slightly slower but repeatable input is preferable to a setting that produces missed or unintended actions. Do not copy a teammate’s numbers without matching their keyboard generation, hand position and game binds.
One profile for gaming and another for typing
Save separate profiles when your device and GG version support them. A shallow movement profile can coexist with a medium typing profile, where accidental characters are more disruptive than a small amount of extra travel.

- Record the exact model. Note the form factor, generation, wired or wireless version, OLED availability and the GG version.
- Choose a baseline. Keep most keys at their current/default setting and change only movement keys first.
- Make one change. Lower or raise actuation by one level, or change Rapid Trigger sensitivity by one increment; do not alter several variables simultaneously.
- Use a low-stakes test. In a training range or private match, perform taps, holds, counter-strafes, jumps and repeated presses.
- Check accidental activation. Rest your fingers naturally and move your hand as you would during play. Note any input that appears without an intentional press.
- Keep a stable setting. If the change improves response without errors, retain it. Otherwise return to the previous value and try a smaller or opposite adjustment.
- Save a profile. Name profiles by game or purpose so you can revert quickly after a firmware or software change.
Fixing common problems
Movement activates while your finger is resting
- Raise that key’s actuation depth one step.
- Reduce Rapid Trigger sensitivity or disable it on the affected key.
- Check whether a thumb, palm or adjacent key is contacting the switch.
- Test with a neutral profile to distinguish a configuration issue from a hardware problem.
Rapid Trigger causes repeated or jittery inputs
- Use a less sensitive setting.
- Increase actuation depth slightly.
- Test the key with normal finger pressure rather than deliberate exaggerated taps.
- Disable Rapid Tap while diagnosing, because it changes input prioritization separately.
GG does not show the expected controls
- Confirm the exact product name and generation in GG.
- Update GG if the model-specific support article requires it.
- Reconnect the keyboard and, for wireless models, verify both the keyboard and receiver connection.
- Do not apply a legacy millimeter value to a newer keyboard merely because the level number looks similar.
TKL 2023 ghost inputs or incorrect actuation
Calibration is a troubleshooting procedure, not routine tuning. SteelSeries’ documented sequence is:
- Install the current GG version.
- Remove the magnetic wrist rest.
- Disconnect the keyboard and, if applicable, its wireless dongle.
- Hold SteelSeries key plus
IplusOwhile reconnecting the keyboard to enter calibration. - Fully press each OmniPoint key when prompted.
- Save the calibration with the same SteelSeries key plus
IplusOcombination.

How to compare Apex Pro settings and generations
When deciding whether a setting or model is suitable, compare the controls that affect your actual use rather than assuming a newer product is automatically faster.
