For a Windows PC, use SteelSeries Sonar as the only active EQ system. Route game audio to Sonar Game, voice chat to Sonar Chat, and the headset microphone to Sonar Microphone. Start with a Sonar preset or a flat 10-band parametric EQ, then make small changes while listening to the games and voices you actually use. For consoles and mobile devices, use the headset’s Engine EQ profile instead, because Sonar is PC-only. Never run Sonar EQ and Engine EQ on the same signal path.
What the best Aeon Pro settings look like
There is no single official SteelSeries frequency curve described as the universal “best” setting for the Aeon Pro. Hearing, ear shape, game mix, fit and room noise all change the result. A profile that exposes quiet footsteps can make explosions sharp or music thin for another listener. The reliable approach is to choose one processing system, establish a neutral starting point and adjust one control at a time.
| Where you use the headset | Recommended control path | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Sonar Game, Chat, Media and Microphone channels | Sonar provides separate routing and a 10-band parametric equalizer for each channel. |
| Console or mobile device | Engine EQ profile applied to the headset | Engine writes the device-wide setting; Sonar is a PC-only application. |
| Any platform | Only one EQ layer active | Stacking Sonar and Engine processing can create conflicts, double processing or poor sound. |
Use the Game channel for the game itself, Chat for Discord or another voice service, Media for music and video, and Aux when you have an additional source. Keep the microphone on the Mic channel so its processing does not alter playback.

Update SteelSeries GG first
Install or update SteelSeries GG, then confirm that the Aeon Pro appears in the Engine device list. SteelSeries Software Team release notes dated October 6, 2026, for GG version 121.0.0 list an Aeon Pro Engine calibration fix. If the headset is missing, disconnect and reconnect its USB connection, try another port, and restart GG before tuning.

Choose the processing owner
On a PC, make Sonar the owner of EQ and microphone processing. Do not also enable an Engine EQ profile that changes the same signal. If you need a simple device-wide profile for a console or phone, close the PC routing path and use Engine EQ instead.
Set Windows and game routing correctly
EQ changes only affect the audio stream that reaches Sonar. Incorrect defaults can make a carefully tuned profile appear not to work.
- Open Windows Settings > System > Sound. Set Sonar Gaming as the default output device.
- In the same Sound area, open the communications or default-app device controls and set Sonar Chat as the default communications output.
- Set Sonar Microphone as the default recording device. Speak while watching the input meter to confirm that Windows receives your voice.
- Open the game’s own audio settings. Select Sonar Gaming, or the Sonar Game endpoint shown by that title, for game playback. Do not leave the game fixed to an old physical headset endpoint if you want Sonar to process it.
- Set the game’s voice-chat input and output to the Sonar Chat path when the title exposes separate choices. In Discord or another voice application, choose Sonar Chat for output and Sonar Microphone for input.
- In Sonar, verify that the game is assigned to Game, voice software to Chat, and other players are not being mixed into the wrong channel. Play a sound and speak into the mic while watching each channel meter.
After changing defaults, restart a game that was already running. Many games select their audio endpoint only at launch.

Build a clear Game EQ without invented numbers
Start flat or with a documented Sonar preset
Open Sonar, select the Game channel and its equalizer, then choose a built-in preset or a flat 10-band parametric starting point. A preset is useful for quickly comparing a directional or immersive presentation, but it is not a measurement of your individual Aeon Pro. Save a copy before making changes so you can return to a known baseline.
Change one band and one purpose at a time
Use small adjustments rather than a dramatic curve. Listen to a familiar game scene containing movement, distant effects, dialogue and a loud impact. Make one change, replay the same scene, and decide whether you gained detail without creating a new problem. If you change several bands at once, you will not know which adjustment helped.
- Low-end masking: If explosions, engines or music cover quiet movement, reduce the lowest bass region slightly before raising any treble. Excessive bass can make the headset seem powerful while hiding positional cues.
- Speech intelligibility: If character or teammate voices sound recessed, make a modest presence adjustment rather than continually increasing overall volume. Check that the change does not make consonants harsh.
- Positional detail: If front-to-back or left-to-right cues are vague, try a small upper-detail adjustment. Stop when footsteps become sharp, metallic or fatiguing.
- Comfort: If gunshots and effects hurt at normal listening levels, reduce the band that makes those transients aggressive instead of lowering every channel. A lower master level can then preserve detail.
Keep the overall EQ output below clipping. If Sonar shows a level warning after a boost, reduce the output or compensate with a cut elsewhere. Equalization cannot restore detail that a game mix does not contain.

Profiles for common gaming goals
| Goal | Starting approach | What to monitor |
|---|---|---|
| Competitive footsteps | Begin flat; trim bass masking, then add only enough upper detail to distinguish movement from ambient effects. | Footsteps should separate from explosions without becoming piercing. Test several maps and distances. |
| Story and open-world games | Use a balanced or immersive preset, retaining natural low-end impact and a smooth voice range. | Long sessions should remain comfortable, and dialogue should stay understandable over music. |
| Voice-heavy cooperative play | Keep the Game channel balanced and give the Chat channel independent level control. | Teammates should not be buried by effects; avoid boosting the whole mix when only speech needs help. |
| Music and video | Use the Media channel’s own profile rather than forcing the competitive Game curve onto music. | Check bass fullness, vocal timbre and fatigue over a complete song or program. |
A repeatable footsteps test
- Choose a training area or replay with repeatable movement and no changing soundtrack.
- Listen at a comfortable level using the flat profile.
- Make a small low-end cut if heavy effects mask movement.
- Compare the altered profile with the flat copy at the same loudness. Louder is not automatically clearer.
- Check at least one indoor and one outdoor scene. A setting that works in a quiet corridor may overemphasize environmental noise outside.
- Play for 20 to 30 minutes before keeping the profile. Fatigue often appears after the initial comparison.
Save separate profiles for games with very different mixes instead of forcing one curve to suit every title.

Preserve headroom with the device level
In Sonar’s microphone controls, keep the device level high enough to preserve headroom, then use the mixer slider to set how loud others hear you. SteelSeries explains that a 50% device level caps the maximum perceived level; a 100% device level can be reduced with the mixer slider. This gives you room to lower a loud signal without first limiting the microphone at the device stage.
Ask one friend to listen while you speak at your normal distance and volume. Adjust the Mic channel until ordinary speech is clear, then test a laugh, a louder callout and a quiet sentence. The correct setting is the one that handles all three without clipping or disappearing.

Use gate and noise reduction conservatively
In a quiet room, begin with low noise-gate, automatic-gate and noise-reduction values. SteelSeries warns that high settings can distort speech or cut off words. Increase them only when a real background problem remains, and test word endings such as “s,” “t” and “k” after every change.
A gate should close during genuine silence but stay open between words. If the first syllable of each sentence vanishes, lower the gate threshold or release behavior. If keyboard noise remains constant while you are silent, raise the setting gradually rather than jumping to its maximum.
Presets and processing for streaming
Sonar includes microphone starting presets such as Deep Voice and Clarity. It also provides a compressor, noise gate and ClearCast AI noise cancellation. Treat these as starting points, not automatic answers: monitor a recording or have another person listen for pumping, clipped consonants, metallic artifacts and missing syllables. A compressor that is too aggressive can make room noise obvious between phrases, while AI cancellation can alter voices when it mistakes a breath or consonant for noise.

Fix a muffled or cutting-out microphone
| Symptom | Likely setting or routing issue | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Friends hear a muffled voice | Heavy noise reduction, an unsuitable preset or the wrong input endpoint | Select Sonar Microphone in Windows and the chat app, return processing to low values, then compare Deep Voice and Clarity with a short recording. |
| Words disappear at the start or end | Gate or automatic-gate is too aggressive | Lower the gate-related controls and retest quiet words and sentence endings. |
| Voice is distorted | High gate/noise-reduction values, clipping or excessive processing | Reduce those controls, confirm the input meter is not clipping, and lower the Mic mixer slider if listeners report excessive volume. |
| Microphone works in Windows but not in a game | The game selected a different input at launch | Choose Sonar Microphone in the game, then restart the game and test its input meter. |
| Game audio is clear but chat is silent | Chat is routed to Game, or Sonar Chat is not the communications device | Set Sonar Chat as the communications output and assign the voice application to the Chat channel. |
| Sound changes unpredictably after enabling EQ | Sonar and Engine are both processing the signal | Disable one EQ system. Use Sonar on PC or Engine on console/mobile, never both for the same path. |
Console and mobile setup
Sonar’s routing and equalizer are intended for PC. On a console or mobile device, create the desired profile in Engine and apply it to the Aeon Pro hardware. Because this is a device-wide profile, it will affect whatever audio the headset receives. Keep the profile moderate if you switch frequently between games, chat and media, and remember that a console’s own surround, spatial-audio or chat processing may add another layer.
If you return the headset to a Windows PC, check that Sonar is again the active EQ path and that an Engine profile is not adding an unintended second curve.
Final validation checklist
- GG recognizes the Aeon Pro and is updated; version 121.0.0 or later includes the October 6, 2026 calibration fix noted by SteelSeries.
- Windows defaults are Sonar Gaming for playback, Sonar Chat for communications and Sonar Microphone for recording.
- The game and chat applications use the intended Sonar endpoints and were restarted after device changes.
- Only one EQ system is active.
- The Game profile was compared with a flat baseline at equal loudness.
- Footsteps, dialogue and loud effects remain intelligible and comfortable over a longer session.
- The microphone is clear at normal, quiet and loud speech levels.
- Gate and noise-reduction controls stay low in a quiet room, with no cut-offs or distortion.
The most dependable “best” Aeon Pro setup is therefore a correctly routed Sonar configuration on PC, a restrained profile tuned to your games, and conservative microphone processing. Engine EQ is the appropriate alternative when the headset is connected to a console or mobile device.
