For the broadest concealment on Steam, open your profile, choose Edit Profile > Privacy Settings, set Game Details to Private, and enable Always keep my total playtime private even if users can see my game details. Game Details covers your purchased and wishlisted games, achievements, playtime, the title you are currently playing, and your in-game visibility. If you only need to disappear occasionally, set your Friends & Chat status to Invisible; you will appear offline while keeping chat and your friends list available.
The settings that hide the most
Steam privacy is divided into library-and-activity controls, presence controls, individual-game controls, and separate profile sections. The most restrictive combination is:
- Game Details: Private in your profile privacy settings.
- Always keep my total playtime private even if users can see my game details: enabled.
- Friends & Chat status: Invisible when you want to look offline but continue using Steam socially.
- Mark as Private on any title that needs an additional, per-game privacy boundary.
These are built-in Steam controls; no purchase, privacy utility, or additional software is required.

Valve’s 2018 privacy announcement defines Game Details as the part of your profile containing the list of games you have purchased or wishlisted, achievements, and playtime. Steam also ties this setting to whether other users can see that you are in-game and which title you are playing.

Setting Game Details to Private therefore does more than remove a game list. It is the global switch for the information most people mean by “Steam activity”: your library and wishlist, achievement information, hours, current-game indicator, and the game name displayed to other users.
How to hide your Steam library and activity
- Open your Steam profile.
- Select Edit Profile.
- Open Privacy Settings.
- Find Game Details and choose Private.
- Enable Always keep my total playtime private even if users can see my game details if you want aggregate hours hidden as well.
- Leave the profile settings page after confirming the change, then view your profile as another user would when possible.
The separate playtime checkbox matters because Steam documents it as an independent control. You can use it when you want a less restrictive audience for game details but do not want people to see your total hours. The exact combination of visible games and hidden hours depends on the audience setting you choose.
Choose the right online status

Steam Support describes Invisible as an offline-looking status that still permits friends-list access and messaging. Do Not Disturb is a notification control, not a library privacy control. If your goal is to hide what you are playing, change Game Details; changing status alone is not a substitute.

Set Invisible from Friends & Chat
- Open the Friends & Chat panel.
- Open your status menu.
- Select Invisible.
Use this alongside Game Details: Private when you want both an undisclosed game library and an offline-looking presence.
Hide one game instead of your entire library
Steam also supports title-by-title privacy. In your library, open the game’s management or properties controls and choose Mark as Private. Repeat the process for every title that needs separate treatment.

Steam says a private game is hidden from other users’ views of:
- Ownership of that title.
- Your in-game status while playing it.
- Playtime for the title.
- The title’s appearance on your profile.
- Your recently played list.
- Related friends-activity events.
This is the appropriate setting when most of your library can remain visible but a particular game should not be associated with your account. It also gives you a narrower change than making all Game Details private.

For privacy, use Steam’s documented Private option. Steam specifically attributes the ownership, status, playtime, profile, recently played, and friends-activity protections above to a game marked Private. A library-organization action should not be treated as equivalent unless Steam identifies it as a privacy control.
Profile sections that require separate review
Game Details does not replace every profile privacy setting. A current third-party guide identifies these as independent sections:
- Profile visibility
- Friends list
- Inventory
- Comments
Review each section in Edit Profile > Privacy Settings rather than assuming that a private Game Details setting changes them automatically. The same third-party context notes that your account’s existence and ban status remain visible even when the profile is private. That residual visibility is different from game activity: people may still be able to establish that the account exists, even when they cannot inspect the library and play history you protected.

Profile visibility
Use the profile-visibility control when you want to restrict the profile page as a whole. Keep in mind that Game Details is a separate, specifically named control; changing one does not remove the need to check the other.
Friends list
Set the friends-list audience independently if you do not want visitors to see your social connections. This setting is separate from Invisible: Invisible changes how your current presence is displayed, while the friends-list control concerns who can inspect the list.
Inventory
Review inventory visibility separately if items, gifts, or other account-held content should not be exposed. Making Game Details private does not serve as a documented replacement for this section.
Comments
Check comment visibility and interaction settings independently when profile discussion or past comments are part of your privacy concern.

Practical privacy setups
Maximum concealment while remaining available
Set Game Details to Private, enable the total-playtime checkbox, and choose Invisible. This covers library information, achievements, hours, current-game display, and your apparent online presence while preserving chat and friends-list access.

Hide one sensitive title
Leave your overall profile arrangement as you prefer, then mark that title Private from its library controls. This removes the title’s ownership, status, hours, profile entry, recently played entry, and related friends-activity events without requiring a whole-library change.
Keep the library visible but conceal hours
Use the separate total-playtime privacy checkbox and choose the Game Details audience that fits your needs. Valve explicitly documents this as independent from the general Game Details audience, so verify the resulting combination on your profile.
Stop people from seeing you online during a session
Select Invisible from Friends & Chat. Do not choose Do Not Disturb for this purpose: it suppresses notifications but is not described by Steam as an offline-presence mode.

“I chose Invisible, but my games are still visible.”
Invisible changes presence, not the game library. Return to Edit Profile > Privacy Settings and change Game Details to the audience you want, usually Private for maximum concealment.

“I hid a game from my library, but friends still see activity.”
Use the game’s management or properties controls and select Mark as Private. Steam’s documented private-game behavior specifically removes the title from ownership, in-game status, playtime, profile, recently played, and related friends-activity views.
“People can still find my account.”
Private game details do not mean that the account ceases to exist. A current third-party guide notes that account existence and ban status can remain visible even with a private profile. Treat game privacy and account discoverability as different concerns.
“Do Not Disturb did not hide my activity.”
That is expected: Do Not Disturb is for notification suppression. Use Invisible for an offline-looking presence and Game Details privacy for library and activity concealment.
What each privacy layer does not cover
- Game Details: Private is not a documented replacement for profile, friends-list, inventory, or comments settings.
- Invisible does not remove games, achievements, or playtime from your profile.
- Offline changes your Steam Community connection; it is not the library privacy switch.
- Do Not Disturb reduces notifications but is not an activity-hiding mode.
- Mark as Private applies to the selected title; it does not automatically make every other game private.
After changing settings, inspect both your profile privacy sections and the individual titles that matter. The safest configuration is the one that matches the information you actually need to conceal, rather than relying on a single status label.
