Use a 60 FPS cap, AMD FSR upscaling, and reduced CPU-heavy settings. Start at 1440p output with FSR Balanced. If you are rendering a 4K output, switch to FSR Performance. Set Effect Quality, Hidden Objects Detail, and View Distance to Medium or Low before reducing textures. Keep shadows, global illumination, reflections, and post-processing at Low or Medium, and leave frame generation off until the uncapped base frame rate is already stable.

This approach targets consistent frame pacing rather than a high peak number. Zero Company is turn-based, so a steady 60 FPS is generally more useful than chasing 90 or 120 FPS. The recommendations below are practical settings based on the published PC requirements and Steam Machine hardware descriptions; no independent benchmark for this exact game-and-console combination has been published.

Why these settings fit the Steam Machine

Valve’s 2026 Steam listing gives Zero Company a minimum target of 1080p at 30 FPS on Low with 16 GB of RAM and a GTX 1080, RX 5600 XT, or Arc B580-class GPU. Its recommended target is 1440p at 60 FPS on High with 32 GB of RAM and an RTX 3080 or RX 7800 XT. The Steam Machine description reported by PC Gamer lists a six-core/12-thread AMD Zen 4 processor, an AMD RDNA 3 graphics processor with 8 GB of GDDR6 VRAM, 16 GB of DDR5 system memory, and SteamOS 3.

That is an important mismatch: the console has the recommended graphics memory class for an upscaled 1440p experience, but only half the system memory specified for the game’s recommended PC configuration. Its compact 110 W GPU design also leaves less power headroom than a full-size desktop card. Native 4K at High is therefore an aggressive goal in demanding scenes. A sharp upscaled image with a reliable frame time is the sensible baseline, not a promise of native-4K performance.

The game can also become processor-limited. Twin Suns Gaming describes Zero Company as leaning harder on the processor than the graphics card, especially when missions begin or many units and effects are active. In those moments, lowering Effect Quality, Hidden Objects Detail, and View Distance can help more than lowering textures.

Recommended baseline profile

Apply this profile before experimenting with individual sliders. It is designed for a 1440p display or a 4K television receiving a 1440p-scaled signal.

Setting Starting value Reason
Output resolution 1440p Reduces render cost while retaining a sharp television image. Use 4K output only with FSR Performance.
Frame-rate limit 60 FPS Improves frame pacing and suits turn-based play; higher peaks provide little practical benefit.
VSync Off when VRR is active; otherwise enable only if tearing or repeated stutter appears VSync is conditional rather than universally faster or smoother.
Upscaler AMD FSR Matches the Steam Machine’s AMD GPU and reduces internal render resolution.
FSR quality Balanced at 1440p; Performance at 4K output These modes preserve more detail than dropping the display resolution outright while lowering GPU work.
Frame generation Off initially Generated frames do not remove CPU stalls and can add input latency.
Shadows Low A relatively effective GPU-side reduction when the graphics processor is saturated.
Global illumination Low or Medium; disable ray-traced mode if offered High and Ultra illumination are expensive, particularly in complex scenes.
Reflections Low or Medium Reflective science-fiction surfaces can consume substantial GPU time.
Post-processing Low or Medium Reduces effects overhead with a modest visual compromise.
Textures Medium Leaves VRAM headroom. Raise to High only after confirming that memory pressure is not causing hitching.
Effect Quality Medium, then Low if mission-start stutter remains One of the first settings to reduce when the processor is the bottleneck.
Hidden Objects Detail Simplified Reduces CPU work that is not always visible during play.
View Distance Low or Medium Contained arenas make this mostly cosmetic, while shorter distances can reduce processing work.

Choose a profile for your display and target

1440p, stable 60 FPS

Use 1440p output, FSR Balanced, a 60 FPS cap, and the baseline values above. Keep textures at Medium and test a mission with several units before raising any quality setting. This is the best first profile for a 1440p monitor or a 4K television when you prefer a clean, stable presentation over maximum detail.

4K television, stable performance

Keep the display output at 4K if your television handles the scaling well, but select FSR Performance. The game renders fewer internal pixels and reconstructs the image for the 4K output. Retain the 60 FPS cap and Low/Medium lighting, reflection, shadow, and post-processing values. If frame times still spike, reduce the CPU-heavy settings before lowering textures.

1080p, maximum consistency

For a 1080p display, begin with FSR Balanced or test native 1080p if the GPU is comfortably below full utilization. Keep the 60 FPS cap. If the machine cannot sustain it in busy encounters, use the 30 FPS target implied by Valve’s minimum specification and select a consistent cap rather than allowing large swings between 30 and 60.

When a 30 FPS cap is appropriate

A locked 30 FPS can be preferable to an unstable 40–60 FPS range when a scene repeatedly causes long frame-time spikes. Turn-based combat does not require twitch-level response, and a uniform cadence makes camera movement and selection feel more predictable. Try 60 FPS first; move to 30 only after FSR and the CPU-heavy reductions fail to hold the target.

How to tune Zero Company step by step

  1. Update first. Install the latest Zero Company patch available to you and update the Steam Machine’s AMD graphics driver through SteamOS. Twin Suns Gaming reports that patch 1.1, released September 9, 2026, included crash, stutter, and save fixes. A graphics profile cannot compensate for a known software defect.
  2. Open the game’s graphics options and set the frame-rate limit to 60 FPS. Do this before changing many quality sliders. The cap prevents the GPU from rendering unnecessary frames and is repeatedly identified as the largest frame-pacing improvement for this game.
  3. Select AMD FSR. Choose Balanced when the output is 1440p. Choose Performance when the output is 4K. Compare a static scene and a moving camera; shimmering or loss of fine detail means the mode is too aggressive for your display.
  4. Turn frame generation off. First establish a stable base rate. Generated frames can make a counter look higher while the processor still pauses, and the added latency is more noticeable when the underlying frame rate is low.
  5. Set the GPU-heavy options. Use Low shadows, Low or Medium global illumination, Low or Medium reflections, and Low or Medium post-processing. If a ray-traced illumination option appears, leave it disabled for the baseline test.
  6. Set the CPU-heavy options. Put Effect Quality at Medium, Hidden Objects Detail at Simplified, and View Distance at Low or Medium. These are the first changes to make when stutter clusters around mission starts, camera transitions, or crowded firefights.
  7. Choose Medium textures. Textures primarily consume VRAM. Do not lower them first when the symptom is a processor stall. Raise them to High only after a long mission remains smooth and there is no evidence of memory pressure.
  8. Test a repeatable scene. Use the same mission opening or a comparable firefight after each change. Change one group of settings at a time so you can identify whether the limitation is CPU-side, GPU-side, or caused by software.

Diagnose whether the CPU or GPU is limiting you

Signs of a CPU-limited scene

  • Stutter appears when a mission loads, many units become active, or several effects trigger at once.
  • Lowering resolution or FSR quality produces little improvement.
  • Effect Quality, Hidden Objects Detail, or View Distance reductions improve frame-time spikes.
  • The GPU is not consistently saturated while the frame rate falls.

For this pattern, keep textures at Medium and reduce the three CPU-heavy settings in that order: Effect Quality, Hidden Objects Detail, then View Distance. A lower internal resolution cannot make the processor finish simulation and object-management work faster.

Signs of a GPU-limited scene

  • Frame rate rises immediately when switching from native rendering to FSR Performance.
  • GPU utilization remains near full load during camera movement or effects-heavy shots.
  • Lowering shadows, global illumination, reflections, or post-processing produces a measurable improvement.
  • Texture changes affect memory-related hitching but not the normal frame rate.

For a GPU limit, keep the 60 FPS cap and lower illumination, reflections, and shadows before making the image excessively soft. FSR Performance at 4K output is usually a larger reduction in pixel cost than moving every slider to Low.

Signs of memory pressure

Memory pressure usually presents as hitching when new areas or assets appear, followed by recovery once they are resident. Because the Steam Machine has 8 GB of dedicated VRAM, Medium textures are a prudent starting point. If High textures coincide with asset-streaming hitches, return to Medium; do not assume that a higher texture setting improves geometry or lighting quality.

Why a 60 FPS cap is usually enough

Destructoid calls 60 FPS a “nice sweet spot” because Zero Company is not a first-person shooter. AllThingsHow similarly frames the goal as stable, consistent frames rather than raw numbers because turn-based tactics do not demand twitch reactions. A cap also prevents the GPU from oscillating between an uncapped peak and a heavily loaded minimum, which can make camera pans feel uneven.

Use a higher target only if the game remains comfortably above 60 FPS in your heaviest repeatable scene and your display supports it. The cap itself is still useful: set it to the refresh rate you can actually sustain instead of allowing the machine to alternate between widely separated frame times.

VSync, VRR, and frame pacing

With variable refresh rate

If your television or monitor has VRR enabled, start with VSync off and the in-game limit at 60 FPS. This lets the display follow the game’s cadence without adding the queueing behavior associated with traditional synchronization. If tearing remains visible, enable VSync and test again; the correct choice depends on the display and its SteamOS configuration.

Without variable refresh rate

Use VSync when you see horizontal tearing or repeated cadence breaks. If enabling it causes a pronounced feeling of delay, keep the 60 FPS cap and compare a short camera movement with VSync off. The objective is a consistent frame interval, not a universal setting that is fastest on every television.

Frame generation

Frame generation is optional, not a cure for a low base rate. It can add latency and cannot remove a CPU stall caused by object processing or mission scripting. Test it only after the machine holds its chosen base target without repeated spikes. If input feels delayed or generated frames appear during pauses, turn it off and keep the stable native frames.

What to lower first when Zero Company stutters

  1. Confirm patch and driver status. Patch 1.1 is reported to contain crash, stutter, and save fixes; retest after updating.
  2. Set the 60 FPS cap. This limits unnecessary rendering and establishes a consistent target.
  3. Enable FSR. Use Balanced at 1440p or Performance for 4K output.
  4. Reduce Effect Quality. Move from Medium to Low if stutters occur at mission starts or during dense effects.
  5. Simplify Hidden Objects Detail. This removes CPU work that may not materially change what you can see.
  6. Lower View Distance. Use Low in contained arenas when CPU spikes persist.
  7. Reduce global illumination, reflections, and shadows. Do this when GPU usage is the limiting factor.
  8. Lower textures only when memory pressure is evident. Textures are not the preferred first cut for a processor-limited game.

Crashes, launch failures, and settings that do not stick

The game crashes or will not launch

Do not assume a quality slider caused the failure. In Steam, open the game’s Properties, choose Installed Files, and run Verify integrity of game files. Restart SteamOS after the check, launch with the baseline profile, and then reapply custom changes one group at a time.

Stutter remains after changing graphics quality

Check whether the symptom is a CPU stall: if FSR and resolution changes do almost nothing, return to Medium textures and lower Effect Quality, Hidden Objects Detail, and View Distance. If the GPU is saturated, lower lighting, reflections, and shadows instead. Test in the same mission section after every change.

The image looks too soft

Move from FSR Performance to Balanced at 4K only if the frame rate allows it. At 1440p, Balanced is the recommended starting point. You can also keep FSR and raise one setting at a time, beginning with textures, rather than switching immediately to native rendering.

Frame generation feels delayed

Turn it off and confirm that the base frame rate is stable. A generated-frame counter can hide the fact that the processor is still producing long frame times; responsiveness follows the base cadence, not the displayed total alone.

Steam Machine versus Steam Deck: do not copy Deck benchmarks

A Steam Deck guide reports roughly 15–25 FPS with heavy stutter when Zero Company is played natively and recommends streaming for many users. That result is not a Steam Machine benchmark. The Steam Machine is described as a desktop-class Zen 4/RDNA 3 design with 8 GB of dedicated VRAM, while the Deck uses a much smaller shared-memory envelope.

Deck articles are still useful for general SteamOS ideas such as using FSR scaling, but their frame-rate numbers and Low settings should not be transferred to the Steam Machine. Start from the Steam Machine profile in this guide and measure the result in your own display mode.

Expected image quality and performance trade-offs

Profile Output Upscaler Frame target Best use Main compromise
Balanced 1440p 1440p FSR Balanced 60 FPS Best general-purpose starting point Lower lighting and effects detail than High
4K television 4K FSR Performance 60 FPS Large-screen play where output resolution matters More reconstruction artifacts and softer fine detail
Consistency-first 1080p 1080p FSR Balanced or native if headroom allows 60 FPS, or locked 30 FPS if necessary Displays where frame pacing matters most Lower output sharpness or lower motion fluidity at 30 FPS
Quality experiment 1440p FSR Balanced 60 FPS cap Raising textures after a smooth baseline Less VRAM headroom and possible asset-streaming hitching

Settings you can raise safely

Once a complete mission remains smooth, raise only one option at a time. Textures are the first candidate because they improve surface detail without directly increasing the simulation work associated with hidden objects or view distance. If High textures introduce streaming hitches, return to Medium and leave the CPU-heavy settings unchanged.

You can then test Medium reflections or global illumination. Watch the most demanding scene rather than an empty corridor: reflective surfaces and complex lighting are where the GPU cost is most visible. Keep the 60 FPS cap while testing so each change is judged against the same target.

Maintenance after updates

Graphics settings are not permanent guarantees. A patch can alter shader compilation, object processing, memory use, or the cost of a visual effect. After a Zero Company update or AMD driver update, replay the same demanding mission section with the baseline profile, then reapply any quality increases. If a formerly smooth scene begins stuttering, return to the troubleshooting order instead of assuming the Steam Machine has degraded.

The September 9, 2026 patch 1.1 is specifically reported to include crash, stutter, and save fixes, so keeping the game current is part of performance tuning rather than an optional cleanup step.

Bottom line for a stable Steam Machine setup

Set a 60 FPS cap, use AMD FSR Balanced at 1440p or Performance for 4K output, and begin with Low/Medium lighting, shadows, reflections, and post-processing. When stutter appears, reduce Effect Quality, Hidden Objects Detail, and View Distance before touching textures. Keep frame generation disabled until the base frame rate is stable, and verify files if the game crashes or fails to launch. This profile aligns the game’s demanding scenes with the Steam Machine’s 16 GB of system memory and 8 GB of dedicated VRAM without claiming native-4K High performance that the published specifications do not establish.
