For most homes, the best starting point is simple: connect the Steam host computer to the router with Ethernet, connect the Android phone to a strong 5 GHz Wi‑Fi signal, and leave Steam Link on its default or Balanced quality. If the stream stutters, use the performance overlay to identify network timing spikes, then reduce quality, bandwidth or resolution. If it is stable but blurry, increase one setting at a time.
There is no universal best bitrate or resolution. The practical limit is set by the host computer, phone, Wi‑Fi signal, interference and other traffic on your network.
What you need before changing settings
Steam Link is a streaming client: the game runs on a computer signed in to Steam, while the Android phone receives the video and sends controls back. For initial pairing, Steam expects the phone and host computer to be on the same network.
- An Android phone running Android 5.0 or newer.
- A computer with Steam installed, running and signed in.
- A wireless router that supports 5 GHz; Steam specifically recommends a 5 GHz-capable router.
- The Steam Link app installed on the phone.
- A controller only if the game is more practical with physical controls; touch controls are not required for every title.
Those requirements come from Steam’s Android Steam Link support page. They do not guarantee compatibility with every Android model, router firmware or controller revision, so use the labels and compatibility information shown by your current app.

- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
The best baseline configuration
Use Ethernet for the host computer
The most valuable first change is connecting the computer running Steam directly to the router with Ethernet. Steam highly recommends this arrangement because a Wi‑Fi host has to compete for wireless airtime while sending the stream to the router, which then sends it back over Wi‑Fi to the phone. A wired host removes one of those wireless hops and makes network timing more predictable.
Put the phone on 5 GHz when the signal is strong
Choose the 5 GHz network on the phone when you are close enough to the router for a strong signal. Steam notes that 5 GHz generally has less congestion than 2.4 GHz, but its range is shorter. A weak 5 GHz signal can perform worse than a strong 2.4 GHz connection, so test the actual room where you play rather than selecting a band by name alone.
Start with Balanced or the default quality
Use the app’s default or Balanced quality first. Steam describes Balanced and Fast as ways to reduce bandwidth use at the expense of visual quality and network load. Do not begin by forcing the highest quality: establish a smooth baseline, then raise one demand at a time.
Improve the network before tuning picture quality
Image settings cannot compensate for a congested or unstable wireless path. Make these changes before spending time on fine-grained resolution or encoding options:
- Keep the host computer on Ethernet whenever practical.
- Place the phone where the 5 GHz signal is strong; walls and distance reduce its usable rate.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, video streams and other traffic while testing.
- Move the router or phone to improve line-of-sight and reduce obstructions.
- Avoid crowded wireless channels where your router allows channel selection.
Steam says interference from neighboring networks can reduce data rate by over 50%. That is Steam’s stated guidance, not a guarantee that every home will experience the same loss. If several devices share the same access point, test Steam Link when those devices are quiet.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Router standards and band choices
Steam recommends routers supporting 802.11ac, with 5 GHz 802.11n as the next choice. These labels describe wireless capability, not a promise of a particular stream quality. The phone’s distance, the router’s placement and local interference still determine the result.
Set up Steam Link on Android
- Turn on the host computer, open Steam and sign in.
- Connect the phone and host computer to the same local network. For the first pairing, avoid guest networks or networks that isolate wireless clients.
- Open Steam Link on Android and follow the on-screen pairing process. Select the computer Steam discovers and enter the displayed pairing code when requested.
- Run the app’s connection test if it offers one, then launch a game from the Steam Link interface.
- Leave quality at the default or Balanced setting for the first session. Play long enough to expose intermittent stutter instead of judging the connection from a few seconds of menu video.
Exact menu names and screen paths can change with Steam Link updates. Use the current in-app streaming settings rather than relying on an older screenshot or a fixed click sequence.

Quality controls are a network-load control as much as an image control. Higher quality sends more data and can expose Wi‑Fi variability; lower quality sacrifices detail to protect smoothness.
| Choice | Effect | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Fast | Reduces bandwidth demand and visual quality. | The connection is unstable or other traffic must share the network. |
| Balanced | Provides Steam’s default compromise between detail and network load. | You are establishing a baseline on a normal home network. |
| Higher quality | Increases image detail and bandwidth demand. | The stream is already stable and you want a sharper picture. |
| Automatic | Restores the client’s default behavior. | Manual changes made the result worse or you want to return to defaults. |
When troubleshooting, Steam advises starting at the lowest bandwidth setting and increasing it gradually until hitches appear, then returning to the last stable value. Its network-settings guidance gives 3 Mbit/s as a starting point for a constrained connection. Treat that number as Steam’s troubleshooting method, not as a universal optimum for Android or a guarantee of a particular resolution.
A safe adjustment order
- Keep the host wired and the phone on the strongest practical Wi‑Fi band.
- Lower the quality choice before changing several advanced options.
- If the stream remains unstable, reduce the bandwidth limit or begin at Steam’s 3 Mbit/s troubleshooting point.
- Increase bandwidth in small steps and play for several minutes after each change.
- When a hitch appears, return to the previous stable value instead of keeping the highest number that works only intermittently.
Do not change quality, resolution, encoding and decoding simultaneously. If four variables move at once, you cannot tell which one fixed or caused the problem.

Use resolution as a second-stage control
Resolution determines how much fine detail must be encoded and transmitted. Lowering it can improve smoothness and is a useful diagnostic even when the phone’s screen has a higher native resolution.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Steam’s low-framerate troubleshooting guidance gives 1280×720 (720p) as a resolution-limit option in Steam Link hardware/client guidance. That is a troubleshooting example, not evidence that every Android phone should be locked to 720p. Use it when the stream is struggling, then raise resolution only after the lower setting is stable.
If the image is stable but too soft
- Keep the current quality and bandwidth that already play smoothly.
- Raise resolution one step, or raise quality one step if resolution is already appropriate.
- Play a demanding section of the game, not just a static menu.
- Return to the previous value if stutter, freezing or delayed input appears.
A soft image is usually a bandwidth or resolution trade-off. It is not automatically evidence that the phone’s display, controller or game settings are defective.
Read the performance overlay instead of guessing
Enable the performance overlay in the client’s advanced streaming settings. The overlay separates network behavior from game, encoding and decoding problems.
Network timing spikes
Steam explains that large spikes in the cyan network-time line indicate highly variable network time and commonly coincide with stuttering or freezing. When those spikes appear, concentrate on the host’s Ethernet connection, the phone’s Wi‑Fi band and signal, interference, competing traffic and the bandwidth limit.

Steady network timing but poor motion
If network timing is steady, the router may not be the limiting part. Check the game’s frame rate on the host, host hardware encoding, stream resolution and client decoding. A computer that cannot render the game consistently can produce a poor stream even on an excellent network.
How to test a suspected cause
- Record what the overlay shows during a repeatable problem, such as a busy combat scene.
- Change one setting only.
- Repeat the same scene for a comparable period.
- Keep the change only if the overlay and play feel improve without creating a new problem.
Hardware encoding and client decoding
Hardware encoding and decoding are diagnostic options, not universal “best” switches. Their results depend on the host graphics card, drivers, the phone’s video-decoding support and the Steam Link app version.
Host hardware encoding
Steam says enabling or disabling host hardware encoding can improve stream quality depending on the graphics card. If low framerate continues after network changes, test the available host hardware-encoding choices one at a time. Keep the option that produces the better combination of frame pacing and image quality on your system.
Client hardware decoding
Steam’s Remote Play FAQ lists disabling client hardware decoding as a possible troubleshooting step. Try it only when the network appears stable but the phone shows decoding-related stutter, corruption or freezes. Software decoding can increase the phone’s workload and battery use, so restore hardware decoding if the test does not help.

Regular stutter or freezing
- Open the performance overlay and look for large cyan network-time spikes.
- Verify that the host is on Ethernet.
- Move the phone closer to the router or test 5 GHz versus 2.4 GHz at the playing location.
- Stop competing network traffic.
- Lower quality or bandwidth, then test again.
- If network timing is steady, inspect game framerate and hardware encoding instead.
Stable stream, but the picture is blurry
- Raise quality or bandwidth one step at a time.
- Increase resolution after confirming that the current setting is smooth.
- Stop when additional detail introduces hitching.
Delayed controls or uneven response
Input delay can accompany variable network timing. Use the overlay, reduce wireless contention and prioritize a wired host. A controller can make controls easier to use, but it does not improve network latency or image quality.

The phone cannot find the computer
Confirm that both devices are on the same local network and that the network allows local discovery. Steam lists UDP ports 27031 and 27036 and TCP ports 27036 and 27037 for Remote Play. It also warns that access-point or client isolation can prevent a connection.
Public, workplace, school, guest, captive-portal and login-required networks may block Remote Play. Port and isolation checks are appropriate when the phone cannot discover or connect to the host; they are not the first changes for a paired stream whose image is merely soft.
Connection works at home but not elsewhere
That pattern usually points to the other network’s restrictions rather than a quality setting. Test on a normal private network first, then check whether the alternate network requires a browser login, blocks device-to-device traffic or uses client isolation.
Controllers and phone ergonomics
A controller is optional. Steam lists the Razer Kishi and Raiju Mobile among supported Android input devices, and also lists the Steam Controller, Xbox One S controller and DualShock 4 on Android 9.0 and newer. This establishes supported-device relevance, not a guarantee that every phone and current controller revision will pair or fit.
Choose a controller based on physical fit, control layout and the Android version requirement. Verify the exact phone dimensions and current model compatibility before buying. A controller can make games designed for a gamepad more practical, but it cannot raise the available bandwidth, remove Wi‑Fi interference or sharpen the stream.
Practical setting recipes
| Situation | Starting configuration | Next change |
|---|---|---|
| Normal home network, wired host | Phone on strong 5 GHz; default or Balanced quality. | Raise quality or resolution only after a stable session. |
| Stutter with network-time spikes | Keep host wired; reduce quality or bandwidth. | Remove competing traffic, improve signal and test again. |
| Weak 5 GHz signal | Move closer to the router or compare with a strong 2.4 GHz connection. | Use the band that produces steadier overlay timing at the playing location. |
| Stable network, low framerate | Check the game’s host framerate. | Test host hardware encoding, then client decoding if phone-side symptoms remain. |
| Very constrained connection | Start at Steam’s 3 Mbit/s troubleshooting point. | Increase gradually until hitches appear, then step back. |
| Persistent low-framerate symptoms | Try 1280×720 as a troubleshooting resolution limit. | Raise resolution only after smoothness is established. |
How to decide which trade-off matters most
Think of Steam Link tuning as four separate trade-offs:
- Stability versus detail: Fast or Balanced can protect playability when higher quality causes spikes.
- Resolution versus bandwidth: More pixels and fine detail require more consistent delivery.
- 5 GHz range versus congestion: 5 GHz is often cleaner but loses strength faster through distance and walls.
- Host encoding versus client decoding: Either side can become the bottleneck, and the better choice depends on the hardware.
The performance overlay tells you which trade-off to address first. Network spikes call for network and bandwidth work; steady network timing shifts attention to rendering, encoding, resolution or phone decoding.

A repeatable tuning checklist
- Confirm Android 5.0 or newer, Steam running on the host and both devices on the same network.
- Connect the host computer to the router with Ethernet.
- Connect the phone to the strongest practical 5 GHz signal.
- Start with default or Balanced quality.
- Play a demanding section while watching the performance overlay.
- If cyan network-time spikes appear, reduce wireless contention and bandwidth demand.
- If timing is steady but framerate is poor, investigate the game, host encoding and client decoding.
- Increase quality, bandwidth or resolution one step at a time only after the stream is stable.
- Keep the last setting that remains smooth across a full session, not the highest setting that works briefly.
