Start with Stardew Valley, Vampire Survivors, Cuphead, It Takes Two, Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition, or Age of Wonders 4 depending on how you play. All appear in Valve’s current Steam Deck compatibility-filtered results, which include both Verified and Playable games. The badge is a useful starting point, not a guarantee that every title will suit your preferred controls, text size, battery target, or multiplayer setup.

This guide groups the strongest choices by need, explains exactly what Verified and Playable mean, and flags the setup or hardware considerations that matter on a handheld. Compatibility labels, prices, controller notes, online requirements, and the list of included games can change, so check the individual Steam Store page immediately before buying.

What Steam Deck Verified and Playable actually mean

Valve’s rating is an experience expectation for Steam Deck, not a quality score. A game marked Verified has passed Valve’s compatibility checks for the main Deck experience. A game marked Playable works, but may require a manual adjustment such as opening an on-screen keyboard, selecting a different text size, using a touchscreen control, or confirming an occasional launcher or configuration step.

Valve’s Steam Deck booklet describes the distinction simply: games that work great are marked “Verified,” while games that work but may need a few manual steps are marked “Playable.” The Steam Deck library and Steam Store expose the rating so you can judge a title before launching it.

For a Playable or Unsupported title, Valve’s Steam Support guidance says to open the game’s Steam Store page and read the Steam Deck Compatibility section. It identifies which Verified requirements are not currently met. That note is more useful than the badge alone because it tells you whether the issue concerns controls, text, display settings, a launcher, or another part of the experience.

How to check a game before purchase

  1. Open the game’s page in the Steam Store, either on the Deck or in a browser.
  2. Find the Steam Deck Compatibility section and read the individual notes, not just the headline badge.
  3. Check the listed controller configuration and whether the game expects a keyboard, mouse, touchscreen, or external account.
  4. Look for multiplayer, launcher, and anti-cheat requirements if you intend to play online.
  5. Confirm the current price, edition, downloadable content, and review status on that page. These details are volatile and are not fixed by the compatibility label.

How large is the compatible catalog?

Valve’s Steam Deck booklet, published in the 2022-era launch period, says the store contains more than 30,000 titles. SteamDB reported more than 25,000 Verified or Playable games in 2026. Those figures use different dates and denominators, so they should be treated as scale indicators rather than one precise catalog count.

Quick comparison: the best fits by player need

The table below is a practical shortlist from Valve’s current Verified/Playable-filtered results. The snapshot does not provide a permanent badge for each game, so the exact current label is deliberately marked for rechecking on the individual store page. Battery and readability comments are relative expectations based on each game’s style, not laboratory measurements.

Game Current Valve filter Controls and text Performance and battery expectation Online or setup friction Best session fit
Stardew Valley Verified or Playable result; confirm badge Simple controller actions; menus and item text are generally easy to navigate on the Deck screen 2D presentation and modest effects usually imply a light workload Solo-friendly; check the store page for the edition and multiplayer details you need Relaxed five-minute check-ins or long farming sessions
Vampire Survivors Verified or Playable result; confirm badge Very small action set; readable progression choices, though effects can become visually busy Usually a light handheld workload, with crowded late-run effects as the demanding moment Designed for quick starts; verify any current co-op or account requirement on the page Short runs and repeatable sessions
Cuphead Verified or Playable result; confirm badge Excellent fit for a physical controller; precision timing matters more than text size 2D animation is less demanding than a modern 3D action game, but sustained effects can still use more power than a quiet menu Primarily an action session; check the page if you need a specific co-op mode Focused attempts lasting a few minutes each
Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition Verified or Playable result; confirm badge Controller support is central, but the RPG has dense menus, tooltips, and dialogue to read Large environments and long play sessions make it a relatively heavier choice than the 2D games here Online or co-op details depend on the edition and current Steam configuration Long campaigns and deliberate, turn-based encounters
Left 4 Dead 2 Verified or Playable result; confirm badge Gamepad aiming is familiar, while quick weapon and item selection benefit from learning the layout Older 3D technology is less demanding than many new shooters, but active scenes draw more power than menus Multiplayer is a core reason to play; verify current server, account, and anti-cheat notes Co-op campaigns or short versus sessions
Overcooked! Verified or Playable result; confirm badge Small number of buttons, but rapid inputs and shared-screen awareness are essential Generally moderate for a 2D/3D party game; busy kitchens can be more active than menus Best with local or online partners; confirm which edition and network mode you own Short, social sessions
Rain World Verified or Playable result; confirm badge Controller movement is important; environmental information can be subtle and demanding Stylized 2D presentation usually keeps the workload moderate, but simulation-heavy moments can vary Check the page for mode and input notes before relying on a specific setup Exploration sessions for players who accept a steep learning curve
Mortal Kombat 11 Verified or Playable result; confirm badge Gamepad is the natural input; menus and move lists are easier to use when the screen is close High-fidelity 3D effects make it one of the more demanding games in this shortlist Online play, sign-in, and any current service requirement should be checked before purchase Short fights, practice, and competitive sessions
It Takes Two Verified or Playable result; confirm badge Designed around two controllers; interface readability is less important than coordinated movement Modern 3D scenes can be comparatively demanding and may reduce battery life faster than 2D picks It is a two-player experience; confirm whether your intended local or online arrangement is supported Planned co-op play rather than solo downtime
Castle Crashers Verified or Playable result; confirm badge Arcade-style controls are easy to map to a gamepad Typically a lighter workload than contemporary 3D action games Check current local and online multiplayer behavior on the store page Short beat-’em-up sessions with friends
Golf With Your Friends Verified or Playable result; confirm badge Straightforward aiming and power controls; small course details may be easier to see when held close Moderate 3D workload; multiplayer lobbies can be more demanding than a menu Online play is central, so check network and account requirements Quick competitive rounds
Age of Wonders 4 Verified or Playable result; confirm badge Many panels, tooltips, and strategic choices make screen readability and zoom settings important Large maps and simulation turns make it a heavier, longer-session strategy choice Confirm multiplayer, launcher, and account requirements for your edition Long campaigns and turn-by-turn planning

Best short-session roguelikes and repeatable runs

Vampire Survivors

Choose Vampire Survivors when you want the fastest route from waking the Deck to playing. Its core loop is built around short runs, automatic attacks, movement, and frequent upgrade decisions. That makes it forgiving when you have only a few minutes and satisfying when you want to continue for a longer session.

The controller burden is low, but late-run screens can become crowded with enemies, damage numbers, and visual effects. If small interface elements bother you, use the in-game display options and the Deck’s scaling tools before judging readability. There is no useful reason to treat a low-complexity control scheme as proof that every visual moment will be effortless.

Cuphead

Cuphead is the precision-action option. Its short boss attempts make it easy to play in focused bursts, while the hand-drawn presentation remains distinctive on the Deck display. A physical controller is the sensible choice because timing, dashes, jumps, and weapon changes matter more than text-heavy navigation.

Expect repetition: the game’s value comes from learning patterns and improving over several attempts. Check the current compatibility note for any input or display adjustment, and do not confuse a Verified or Playable badge with a promise that the difficulty will feel comfortable.

Best cozy and low-pressure games

Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley is the safest recommendation for a quiet, flexible session. You can make progress in a short visit, then return for a much longer farming, exploration, or relationship-focused stretch. Its rhythm suits handheld play because pausing and resuming does not require the commitment of a full multiplayer match.

The game’s menus, inventory, calendar, and dialogue are important enough that you should still inspect the current text and control notes. If you prefer a larger interface, test the Deck’s display scaling rather than assuming every label will be ideal at the default setting. Solo play is the simplest setup; verify the current edition and co-op details if you are buying specifically for shared play.

Cult of the Lamb

Current editorial recommendations also single out Cult of the Lamb, including its Woolhaven expansion, as a strong Deck-oriented choice. It combines compact action sections with management and progression, so it can serve both short visits and longer evenings. Because this title and its expansion can receive updates independently, check the live Steam page for the current badge, edition contents, and any controller notes before buying.

Best games for demanding action

Mortal Kombat 11

Mortal Kombat 11 is a good fit when you want a fighting game that can be played in brief, self-contained matches. The gamepad is the natural input, and the move-list presentation benefits from having the screen close enough to read comfortably. Its modern 3D visuals place it toward the heavier end of this list for power use, so battery expectations should be more conservative than for 2D games.

Online features can involve service, sign-in, or edition-specific requirements. Read the Steam Deck Compatibility section and the multiplayer information on the store page if online competition is the reason you are buying.

Rain World

Rain World rewards players who want exploration, survival, and a challenge rather than a guided power fantasy. Controller movement is central, but the game often communicates through environmental cues instead of large, explicit prompts. That makes screen visibility and familiarity with the controls more important than a simple button-count comparison.

It is a better recommendation for patient sessions than for someone seeking an immediately relaxing game. Confirm the current compatibility note, especially if you plan to use a particular control layout or display configuration.

Best co-op and party games

It Takes Two

It Takes Two should be your first check when the Deck is part of a planned two-player experience. Its design assumes cooperation, so the key question is not whether it is entertaining alone but whether you have the second player, controller, and local or online arrangement you intend to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 3D presentation and cinematic set pieces are more demanding than the lightest games in this guide. Check the current Steam page for the exact multiplayer and account requirements before buying a second copy or planning a particular setup.

Overcooked!

Overcooked! turns simple controls into a coordination test. It is excellent for short sessions because a single kitchen can be finished quickly, while a group can keep playing to improve scores. The same simplicity that makes it easy to start also makes timing and communication more important than menu complexity.

Decide whether you need local play, online play, or both, then verify the edition’s current multiplayer notes. Do not assume that a similarly named release has identical features.

Left 4 Dead 2

Left 4 Dead 2 remains a natural Deck recommendation for cooperative shooter sessions. Its campaign structure lets a group play a chapter rather than commit to an entire evening, and the controller layout can be learned progressively as you become comfortable with aiming and item selection.

Because online play is a major part of its appeal, inspect the current store information for multiplayer, account, server, and anti-cheat requirements. A compatibility badge cannot tell you whether your network, friends list, or preferred online mode will be available at the moment you play.

Castle Crashers

Castle Crashers is the low-friction arcade choice for a group that wants immediate button-based action. Its short stages make it easy to pass the Deck around or fit in a quick session. The simpler presentation generally makes it less demanding than modern 3D co-op games, but verify the multiplayer mode you need on the live page.

Golf With Your Friends

Golf With Your Friends suits competitive rounds where everyone can take a turn without committing to a long campaign. Aiming and power controls are straightforward, while course details and small interface elements may be easier to read when the Deck is held close or connected to a larger display.

Online play is central to the experience, so check current lobby, network, and account requirements before purchase. The badge addresses Deck compatibility; it does not guarantee that every matchmaking or multiplayer condition will be available.

Best long-form RPG and strategy games

Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition

Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition is the role-playing pick for players who want a campaign that can occupy dozens of handheld sessions. Turn-based combat rewards planning rather than reflexes, and the world supports experimentation, exploration, and multiple approaches to encounters.

The trade-off is interface density. Tooltips, inventory management, dialogue, and character sheets create more reading than the action games above. Use the compatibility note to check the current control mapping, then adjust display scaling if text is uncomfortable. It is a strong fit for deliberate play, not for someone who wants to launch a game and understand every system immediately.

Age of Wonders 4

Age of Wonders 4 is the strategy choice for players who enjoy long campaigns, map decisions, and turn-by-turn planning. It is naturally suited to pausing between decisions, but the number of panels, tooltips, and simulation details makes readability the first thing to evaluate on a handheld screen.

Large maps and extended sessions also make it a heavier choice for battery planning than the 2D recommendations. If you intend to play multiplayer, read the current store page for network, launcher, and account requirements before buying.

How to choose between Verified and Playable

Choose Verified when setup time matters most

Verified is the better filter for a shared household Deck, a child’s device, travel, or anyone who wants to press Play with minimal troubleshooting. It reduces the chance that you will need a keyboard, touchscreen, custom control mapping, or an extra configuration step before the first session.

Choose Playable when the caveat is acceptable

Playable can be the right choice when the game’s genre and community matter more than instant setup. A text-heavy RPG may be worth one display adjustment; a strategy game may be worth learning an alternate input layout. Read the specific unmet requirement in the Steam Deck Compatibility section and decide whether it affects your use case.

Do not treat either badge as a performance guarantee

The label does not promise a particular frame rate, battery duration, resolution, fan-noise level, text size, server population, or sale price. It also does not replace checking downloadable-content editions, launchers, multiplayer services, or updates released after the rating was assigned.

A practical buying checklist

  • Match the session: choose Vampire Survivors, Cuphead, Mortal Kombat 11, or Golf With Your Friends for compact rounds; choose Stardew Valley, Divinity: Original Sin 2, or Age of Wonders 4 for campaigns that reward returning over many days.
  • Match the people: It Takes Two, Overcooked!, Left 4 Dead 2, Castle Crashers, and Golf With Your Friends make sense when you have the required second player or group.
  • Check the screen: RPG and strategy interfaces contain more text and panels than arcade games. Read the current text-size and control notes before buying for handheld-only play.
  • Plan power use: 2D games generally impose a lighter workload than modern 3D games, while large maps, crowded effects, and cinematic scenes can increase power use. This guide does not provide battery benchmarks.
  • Verify online dependencies: multiplayer, launchers, account sign-ins, and anti-cheat systems can change independently of the badge.
  • Recheck before paying: compatibility labels, prices, review percentages, editions, and newly added games are volatile. The live Steam page is the final authority for the current listing.

Verdict

For the broadest range of Deck owners, begin with Stardew Valley for low-pressure play, Vampire Survivors for short runs, Cuphead for precision action, and It Takes Two or Overcooked! for co-op. Pick Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition or Age of Wonders 4 when you want a long campaign and are comfortable reading a dense interface. Use Valve’s Steam Deck Compatibility section to decide whether a Playable caveat is acceptable, and recheck every title’s live badge and requirements before purchase.
