Start with the bundled Steam Frame controllers, keep the headset in its normal display mode, and tune each game separately. Use Steam Input for streamed PC games, Android’s Game Controller settings for native Android titles, and a stable refresh-rate cap instead of automatically choosing the highest available number. If an Android game is too small or difficult to read, an optional utility such as Frame Control can apply a resolution or text-size profile to that app.
Know which kind of game you are configuring
Steam Frame is a standalone virtual-reality headset designed primarily for low-latency streaming of a player’s Steam Library from a PC, while also supporting standalone VR and non-VR experiences. Its supported execution models include Windows and Linux PC titles, native ARM64 software, and Android-based APKs.
That distinction determines where a setting lives:
- Streamed Windows or Linux games: the game runs on the computer. Controller behavior is normally handled through Steam Input and the game’s Steam configuration page, while display behavior is influenced by the streamed image and the headset’s display mode.
- Native Android or ARM64 games: the APK runs on the headset. Android controls controller pairing, button and stick remapping, application frame-rate requests, and much of the scaling behavior.
- Hybrid or unusual titles: a game may expose conventional gamepad controls in one screen and motion, mouse, or touch-style controls in another. Treat its input requirements as a per-game decision rather than assuming one profile will fit everything.
Do not use Android remapping to solve a streamed PC game’s missing bindings, and do not expect a Steam Input layout to change an Android APK’s native button labels. First identify where the game is executing, then change the control layer that owns it.
Which controller should you use?
For a first setup, use the controllers included with Steam Frame. Steam says they should pair automatically when powered on, so they provide the least complicated path for native headset experiences and for games designed around motion input.

A conventional external gamepad is useful when an Android title expects a standard console-style layout, when you prefer seated play, or when a game’s menus are awkward with motion controllers. An Xbox Wireless Controller is a strong default because Steam’s official pairing flow explicitly supports Xbox gamepads as well as Steam, PlayStation, and Switch Pro controllers. The best choice is the one whose physical layout matches the game and whose connection method you can keep reliable.
| Controller option | Best fit | Connection and setup | Where to fix an incorrect layout |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bundled Steam Frame controllers | Native Steam Frame games, motion input, room-scale interaction | Turn them on; they should pair automatically | Game-specific Steam Input settings when the title exposes them |
| Xbox Wireless Controller | Android games and streamed games expecting a familiar ABXY gamepad | Steam Settings > Controller > Add Controller, then follow the visual prompts; Android can also pair compatible Bluetooth devices | Steam Input for streamed PC titles; Android Game Controller settings for native Android titles |
| PlayStation or Switch Pro controller | Players who already own one or prefer its ergonomics | Add it through Steam’s controller pairing flow; Android supports compatible wired or Bluetooth connections | Use Steam Input or Android remapping according to where the game runs |
| Wired USB gamepad | Low-interference play or a controller that is unreliable over Bluetooth | Connect the controller to the headset with a compatible adapter or cable | Android Game Controller settings for an Android APK; Steam Input for a streamed title |
“Supported” does not mean that every game will display the correct button glyphs automatically. A title may show Xbox prompts while you are holding a different controller, or it may require a nonstandard axis arrangement. Correct the mapping in the layer that receives the input instead of changing several layers at once.
Pair a controller and verify it before launching a game
Use the bundled controllers first
- Turn on the Steam Frame headset.
- Power on both bundled controllers.
- Wait for the automatic pairing process to complete.
- Open a simple menu or system interaction and confirm that both thumbsticks, triggers, face buttons, and any motion controls respond.
- If one controller does not appear, power it off and on again before introducing an external gamepad. This keeps the diagnosis limited to one pairing relationship.
Add an external gamepad through Steam
- Open Steam.
- Go to Steam Settings > Controller > Add Controller.
- Select the controller family shown by the pairing screen.
- Follow the visual prompts until Steam reports that the controller is connected.
- Open the target game’s controller configuration and check that the expected buttons and sticks are recognized.
For a native Android game, Android documents both wired and Bluetooth controller connections. After pairing, open Android’s Game Controller settings. Those settings can swap button assignments and can swap the left and right joysticks, which is useful when an APK labels axes incorrectly or assumes a different physical orientation.

Choose the input model deliberately
- Use motion controllers when the game expects pointing, hand movement, or room-scale actions.
- Use a conventional gamepad when the APK presents a standard console layout or when you want stable seated controls.
- Use mouse-and-keyboard emulation only when the game’s menus or actions genuinely require it; it can make an otherwise simple game harder to operate.
Set up Android controller mapping
Android remapping is most useful for native Android games. Start with the layout the APK documents or displays, then change only the controls that are wrong. Swapping every button before testing makes it difficult to tell whether the problem is the game, the controller, or the remap.
- Pair the controller by Bluetooth or connect it by wire.
- Launch Android’s Game Controller settings and confirm that the device is listed.
- Test each face button, trigger, shoulder button, thumbstick, and directional input.
- Swap button assignments only where the game’s prompts and the physical controls disagree.
- Swap the left and right joysticks if movement and camera axes are reversed.
- Save or apply the Android mapping, then test it in the game’s lowest-risk menu.
If only one game is wrong, avoid changing a global Android mapping that would break other titles. Keep a written note of the original arrangement so you can restore it after playing an unusual APK.
Display settings: choose stability over the largest refresh-rate number
Leave the headset in its normal display mode as your starting point. A higher nominal refresh rate is not automatically better if the game cannot deliver frames consistently. For a title with a stable frame-rate target, choose the closest sustainable display rate. If the application cannot match the display, a stable frame cap and even frame pacing are preferable to an unstable high-rate mode.

Android allows an application to request a preferred frame rate with Surface.setFrameRate(), but the request is only a preference. The platform may retain the current display rate because of battery-saver behavior, another higher-priority surface, or hardware limits. The game must continue working at the rate Android actually selects.
| What you observe | Recommended setting | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The game holds its target rate consistently | Select the nearest sustainable refresh rate | Matching a stable target avoids unnecessary conversion between application and display timing |
| The image looks smooth only briefly, then stutters | Use a lower sustainable mode and an in-game frame cap | Consistency is more noticeable than a peak number that cannot be maintained |
| The game runs at a rate different from the display | Keep the stable mode; do not repeatedly switch during play | Android warns that frequent frame-rate changes can cause drops during transitions |
| Menus are difficult to read | Keep a stable display mode and adjust per-app text size or resolution | Readability is a scaling problem, not necessarily a refresh-rate problem |
| Battery life matters more than maximum smoothness | Use the normal or lower sustainable mode and avoid aggressive switching | Battery-saver policy can override an application’s preferred rate |
What Android’s frame-pacing guidance means for players
Android recommends presentation timestamps and its Frame Pacing library when an application’s frame rate and the display rate differ. Those are developer-side mechanisms that help reduce unnecessary judder; a player normally cannot enable them from a headset menu. Your practical controls are a stable in-game cap, a sustainable headset mode, and avoiding repeated mode changes while the game is running.
There is no single FPS or latency figure that applies to every Steam Frame Android game. The result depends on the APK, the headset’s hardware and power state, and whether the title is native or streamed. Judge the setting by sustained frame pacing and input response in the specific game rather than by the maximum number shown in a menu.

Change resolution and text size per Android app
Some Android titles render too small in the headset, crop their menus, or demand more rendering work than necessary. Per-app controls are useful because one global display change can make every other application worse.
Frame Control is a third-party desktop utility that advertises per-Android-app resolution and text-size controls, APK installation, Steam Frame ratings, and headset-status tools. It is optional, not part of Android’s built-in settings. Its setup instructions require Developer Mode on the headset, a developer password, and a computer connected to the same trusted network.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPrepare the headset and computer
- Confirm that the headset is on the trusted network you intend to use.
- Enable Developer Mode on Steam Frame.
- Set the developer password requested by the headset.
- Install and open Frame Control on the computer.
- Connect the utility to the headset using the local-network instructions supplied with its current release.
Verify the utility’s current release and trust requirements before installation. Developer access and a same-network connection increase the importance of checking what software you are authorizing.

Create a conservative per-app profile
- Select the Android APK from the utility’s application list.
- Record the original resolution and text-size values before changing them.
- Raise text size first when the problem is unreadable menus or labels.
- Change resolution in small increments when the image is too small, cropped, or unnecessarily demanding.
- Launch the app and test menus, gameplay, overlays, and any text-entry screen.
- Save the working profile with the app’s name and the reason for the change.
If an adjustment causes scaling problems, restore the recorded values rather than applying another random combination. A profile that improves one title may make another APK’s touch targets, aspect ratio, or interface alignment worse.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Configure Steam Input for each streamed PC game
Valve’s Steam updates describe controller-support indicators and a controller-configuration button on individual game pages. Use that per-game configuration to select a gamepad template, correct button prompts, and create a layout for titles that need different bindings.
- Open the individual game page in Steam and check its controller-support indicator.
- Open the controller-configuration button.
- Confirm whether the title expects a standard gamepad, mouse-and-keyboard emulation, or motion input.
- Start with the official layout or the closest standard gamepad template.
- Change only missing or awkward actions, such as a menu-confirm button, camera axis, trigger, or radial-menu activation.
- Save a separate layout for games with unusual menus or touch-only controls.
- Test the layout in a low-risk menu before starting a long session.
Per-game layouts prevent a fix for one title from changing another title’s controls. They also make it easier to return to the official layout when a game update changes its input behavior.

Build practical profiles instead of one universal setup
| Use case | Controller profile | Display profile | Per-app action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native Android action game | Conventional gamepad if the APK expects ABXY; Android-remap only incorrect buttons | Normal mode or the nearest sustainable target | Raise text size only if menus are hard to read |
| Native Android title designed for motion | Bundled Steam Frame controllers | Stable mode with no repeated switching | Leave resolution unchanged unless the app is visibly cropped or tiny |
| Streamed PC game with standard controller support | Bundled controllers through a suitable Steam Input template, or an external gamepad | Prioritize consistent pacing in the streamed image | Use the game’s Steam Input layout rather than Android remapping |
| Menu-heavy or text-heavy APK | Whichever controller gives reliable navigation | Stable mode; readability comes first | Use a modest text-size increase and record the profile |
| Game with reversed sticks or unusual axes | Android joystick swap for an APK; Steam Input axis correction for a streamed title | Do not change refresh rate to solve an input-axis problem | Save the correction only for that game |
Troubleshoot by symptom
The bundled controller does not respond
- Turn the controller off and on again and wait for automatic pairing.
- Check whether another external controller is already taking focus.
- Test the controller in a system menu before blaming the game’s layout.
- If the game is streamed, open its Steam Input configuration; if it is an APK, check Android’s Game Controller settings.
An Android game shows the wrong buttons
- Confirm that the game is a native APK rather than a streamed PC title.
- Use Android’s button reassignment for face-button or shoulder-button errors.
- Check whether the game expects an Xbox-style ABXY order or another convention.
- Restore the original mapping if other games become incorrect.
The left and right sticks behave backwards
For a native Android title, use Android’s option to swap the left and right joysticks. For a streamed PC title, correct the axes in that game’s Steam Input layout. Do not change both systems for the same symptom.
The game stutters after changing refresh modes
- Return to the normal display mode.
- Stop switching modes during active play.
- Choose a sustainable rate and apply an in-game frame cap.
- Remember that Android may reject the requested rate because of battery saver, another higher-priority surface, or hardware limits.
Text is too small or the image is cropped
- Try a per-app text-size adjustment before changing resolution.
- Use Frame Control only after enabling Developer Mode, setting a developer password, and connecting from a trusted same-network computer.
- Change one value at a time and keep the original profile for rollback.
An external controller will not pair
- For Steam pairing, open Steam Settings > Controller > Add Controller and follow the visual prompts.
- For an Android APK, use a wired connection or Android’s Bluetooth pairing flow.
- Check that the game itself supports a conventional gamepad; some titles require motion, mouse, or touch-style input.
A simple setup order that avoids conflicts
- Identify whether the game is streamed from Windows or Linux, or running as a native Android/ARM64 app.
- Start with the bundled Steam Frame controllers.
- Pair an external gamepad only if the game’s input model or your preferred ergonomics call for it.
- Test the default controls before remapping anything.
- Apply Steam Input changes to streamed PC games and Android remapping to native APKs.
- Leave the headset in its normal display mode, then select the nearest sustainable rate if the game has a known stable target.
- Use a frame cap and avoid repeated display-mode changes when pacing is uneven.
- Adjust per-app text size or resolution only when readability, cropping, or rendering demand requires it.
- Record each working profile and restore the original values when troubleshooting.
The result is a layered setup: bundled motion controllers for the experiences that need them, a familiar external gamepad for standard Android controls, Steam Input for streamed PC titles, Android remapping for APKs, and display choices based on sustained pacing and readability rather than the largest advertised number.
