The most reliable approach is a layered workflow, not one magic filter: use Steam Search with several specific tags, refine by features and platform, train the Discovery Queue with Wishlist and Ignore controls, follow human Steam Curators, then screen shortlisted games with SteamDB’s AI Content Disclosed tag and the disclosure on each store page. This finds niche indie games while making the evidence behind an AI-asset decision explicit.
Why finding a narrow set of indie games is difficult on Steam
Steam’s catalogue is large enough that the broad Indie tag is a poor discovery query by itself. Valve’s 2026 store-tag update says more than 82,000 games—about 53% of all games on Steam—carry that tag. It describes a business category, not a useful taste profile.
Steam’s discovery system combines user-facing metadata, recommendation behavior and community input. Tags can be applied by developers, players with non-limited accounts and moderators. They power browse hubs, tag searches, recommendations and dynamic collections, but they are not permanent editorial judgments. A game can have an incomplete, overly broad or community-driven tag set.

The tool stack at a glance
| Tool | Best use | Coverage | Precision | AI-disclosure signal | Data transparency | Effort |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Search and tag filters | Building a focused catalogue query | Broad, first-party Steam catalogue | High when several specific tags are combined | None as a universal exclusion control | Shows Steam’s own tags and filters | Low to moderate |
| Discovery Queue and Recommendation Feed | Finding titles similar to games you already play | Personalized Steam catalogue | Improves as you provide feedback | None | Recommendations are based on Steam activity and catalogue data | Low |
| Steam Curators | Human-selected recommendations and explanations | Depends on each curator’s coverage | Potentially very high for a matching niche | Usually requires your own disclosure check | Public curator reviews and recommendation history | Low after setup |
| SteamDB AI Content Disclosed | Flagging games with a matching Steam disclosure | Games whose store pages contain the required disclosure text | Specific for disclosed use, not for undisclosed use | Automatically applied disclosure tag | Shows the rule used to apply the tag | Low |
| Manual store-page check | Resolving ambiguity on a shortlist | Only the games you inspect | Highest available for the evidence shown | Reads Valve’s disclosure and the developer’s wording | Directly inspectable source material | Moderate |
Build a precise Steam search instead of relying on Indie
Use four tag dimensions
Steam’s tag documentation says the top 20 tags influence visibility and similarity, while common tags have less recommendation influence than specific tags. Use that ranking behavior to make the query descriptive rather than merely popular.
- Subgenre: choose the narrow form of play you actually want, such as a metroidvania, deck-building roguelike, immersive sim or narrative adventure.
- Mechanic: add the action that defines the experience, such as turn-based combat, base building, stealth, fishing, automation or dialogue choices.
- Mood or subject: use a tone or theme such as atmospheric, psychological, cozy, dark fantasy, mystery or science fiction.
- Visual or presentation style: add a descriptor such as pixel graphics, hand-drawn, minimalist, 2D or first-person.
These are dimensions, not a requirement to select exactly four tags every time. Two highly specific tags can outperform six broad ones. The point is to make the query describe a game you would play, not simply label it as independent.
Add Steam features and practical filters
Steam Search supports searching by name, tag or description, then filtering by tags, Steam features, operating system and language. Apply those filters after choosing your core tags:
- Select the operating system you can actually use, such as Windows, macOS or Linux.
- Choose features that affect your decision, including controller support, single-player, local co-op, online co-op or achievements.
- Set the language filter when a particular interface or subtitle language is necessary.
- Use the description search when you know a distinctive mechanic or setting but do not know the correct tag.
Keep the first query narrow enough to scan. If it returns too few games, remove the least important mood or visual tag before removing the subgenre or mechanic that defines your taste.
Step-by-step: a repeatable Steam discovery workflow
- Open Steam Search. Start from Steam’s store search and choose the tag-filter controls rather than typing only a genre word into the name field.
- Choose a specific subgenre. Avoid starting with only Indie. Pick the closest narrow category to the experience you want.
- Add a defining mechanic. Select one or two mechanics that would make you buy the game. More tags can reduce relevance if they describe optional features rather than the core loop.
- Add mood or visual style. Use these as tie-breakers. If the result set becomes too small, remove one of these before removing the subgenre.
- Apply platform, feature and language filters. This prevents attractive but unusable results from occupying the shortlist.
- Inspect the result cards and descriptions. Open candidates whose tags and description agree. Treat a mismatch as a reason to investigate, not as proof that the game is poor.
- Place promising games on your Wishlist. Wishlist status gives you a durable shortlist for later price, release and library decisions without requiring an immediate purchase.
- Use the Discovery Queue for adjacent ideas. Steam describes the queue as a way to browse suggested games and then follow, wishlist, purchase or mark them not interested. Record useful discoveries even when they are not immediate buys.
- Mark clear mismatches Not Interested. Valve says ignored products are excluded from future recommendations and featured spots. Use this control for games that are genuinely outside your taste, not for every game you have not yet researched.
- Repeat with one changed dimension. Run a second search that keeps the subgenre but swaps the mechanic or mood. This exposes hidden corners without returning to the entire catalogue.
How to train Steam’s recommendations without losing control
Discovery Queue
The Discovery Queue is most useful as a controlled exploration loop. Open a queue, inspect each suggestion, and decide whether it belongs in your Wishlist, should be followed for updates, should be purchased, or should be marked Not Interested. The queue is designed to surface popular new releases you have not seen, but it can also reveal smaller titles when your tags, library and feedback point toward them.

Recommendation Feed
Steam’s Recommendation Feed is intended to surface well-reviewed titles, including indie games that a player might otherwise miss. Treat it as a second-pass source: first establish your taste with searches and curator follows, then use the feed to find nearby games you did not think to query.
Wishlist, Follow and Ignore
- Wishlist: reserve games that meet your current criteria but need more evidence, a sale or a later release.
- Follow: receive updates for a game you may want to track even if it is not a purchase decision yet.
- Not Interested: remove a genuine mismatch from future recommendation and featured surfaces.
Do not use Not Interested as a substitute for an AI-content decision. Steam’s documented controls improve relevance; they do not constitute a complete filter for generative-AI assets.
Use Steam Curators for human taste and context
Valve defines Steam Curators as “individuals, organizations, and groups that publish reviews and recommendations in a public forum on Steam.” Their picks appear on the Steam home page and in the community activity feed.
Curators are valuable when your preferences are difficult to express with tags: a particular kind of pacing, a dislike of excessive grind, interest in short experimental games, or a preference for a specific storytelling style. Search for curators whose recent recommendations match several games you already enjoy, then follow more than one perspective if their coverage is narrow.
How to evaluate a curator
- Read several recent reviews, not just the curator’s headline or follower count.
- Check whether recommendations explain strengths, limitations and play-time expectations.
- Look for consistent coverage of your niche rather than a general list of every release.
- Use curator picks to create a shortlist; do not treat a positive recommendation as evidence about AI asset use.
What SteamDB’s AI Content Disclosed tag can and cannot tell you
SteamDB’s AI Content Disclosed tag is the strongest researched screening aid for this workflow. SteamDB states: “This tag identifies games where developers have disclosed the use of generative artificial intelligence anywhere in their product or marketing.” It is applied automatically when the specific AI-disclosure statement appears on a game’s Steam store page, including cases where AI was used only for marketing assets.

How to use the tag
- Build a shortlist through Steam Search, the Discovery Queue or Curators.
- Open each candidate’s SteamDB page and check for the AI Content Disclosed tag.
- Open the game’s Steam store page and read the disclosure itself. Note whether it describes pre-generated content, live-generated content, marketing assets or another use.
- Decide whether that use conflicts with your requirement. A marketing-only disclosure may matter differently to you than AI-generated in-game art, but the policy signal tells you to inspect rather than assume.
- Record the result in your own shortlist: disclosed and unacceptable, disclosed but acceptable for your criteria, or no matching disclosure found.
The important limitation
A missing SteamDB tag means that SteamDB did not find the matching disclosure statement. It is not proof that a game contains no generative-AI asset. The tag depends on a developer disclosure appearing on the Steam store page, so undisclosed use, ambiguous wording or information not covered by that statement can remain outside the signal.
Recommended Free Tools
Valve’s AI-content policy distinguishes pre-generated content from live-generated content and provides a reporting path for illegal live-generated content. The researched Steam materials do not document a universal native Steam control that hides every game using AI. Therefore, use SteamDB as a disclosure flag, not as a guaranteed exclusion filter.
Manual evidence check for shortlisted games
When the decision matters, inspect the evidence visible on the store page and in the game’s public materials:
- Disclosure wording: identify what the developer says was generated, where it appears and whether the statement is limited to marketing or covers in-game material.
- Screenshots: compare UI text, repeated motifs, hands, faces and object details across images. These observations can raise questions but cannot prove how an asset was made.
- Trailer: check whether the footage is labeled, representative and consistent with the screenshots.
- Reviews and community discussion: use them to identify unanswered questions or developer clarifications, not as definitive evidence from anonymous speculation.
- Uncertainty record: write “no matching disclosure found” when that is all you know. Do not convert absence of a tag into a clean bill of health.
Decision framework: which tool should you use first?
| Your immediate question | Start here | Why | What to do next |
|---|---|---|---|
| “What games fit this very specific taste?” | Steam Search and tag filters | They provide the most direct control over subgenre, mechanics, mood, presentation, platform and language. | Save candidates, then expand through the Discovery Queue. |
| “What is similar to games I already enjoy?” | Discovery Queue and Recommendation Feed | They use your Steam activity and feedback to surface adjacent titles. | Mark mismatches Not Interested and wishlist uncertain candidates. |
| “Who has already judged these games for my niche?” | Steam Curators | Human recommendations add context that tags cannot express. | Check several recent reviews for consistency and fit. |
| “Which shortlisted games disclose generative-AI use?” | SteamDB AI Content Disclosed | It automatically flags a matching disclosure on the Steam store page. | Read the store-page disclosure and classify the type of use. |
| “Can I confidently exclude undisclosed AI use?” | None of the researched tools alone | The available signal is disclosure-based and cannot identify use that was not disclosed. | Perform a manual evidence check and preserve uncertainty. |
A practical shortlist method for a no-AI-asset preference
Pass one: discovery
Run two or three Steam searches built around different combinations of the same core taste. For example, keep a subgenre fixed, then vary the mechanic and mood. Add platform and feature filters before opening individual store pages. Save games that look promising rather than trying to decide from a search card.
Pass two: relevance
Use the Discovery Queue, Recommendation Feed and selected Curators to add adjacent candidates. Wishlist games that need more research. Mark only clear mismatches Not Interested so the recommendation system receives useful feedback.

Pass three: disclosure screening
Check every shortlisted game for SteamDB’s AI Content Disclosed tag, then read the corresponding store-page disclosure. Separate games into three groups: disclosed use that conflicts with your rule, disclosed use that your rule permits, and no matching disclosure found.
Pass four: evidence and purchase decision
Inspect the store page, screenshots, trailer and credible review discussion for the remaining games. If the evidence is incomplete, retain that uncertainty in your notes instead of presenting the title as verified. This keeps the discovery process honest while still allowing you to find games that fit your taste.

Using only the Indie tag
Problem: the tag covers more than 82,000 games according to Valve’s 2026 update.
Fix: pair a narrow subgenre with a mechanic, mood or visual tag, then apply platform and feature filters.
Assuming every tag is an editorial fact
Problem: developers, players with non-limited accounts and moderators can apply tags, and tags can be incomplete or broad.

Treating SteamDB’s absence of a tag as proof
Problem: the AI signal is triggered by a required disclosure statement and cannot identify undisclosed use.
Fix: phrase the result accurately as “no matching disclosure found,” then inspect the store page and other public evidence.

Using Not Interested for every skipped game
Problem: Steam excludes ignored products from future recommendations and featured spots, so overuse can remove potentially relevant games.
Fix: reserve it for a genuine mismatch. Leave uncertain games in your queue or Wishlist while you investigate.
Following a curator without checking fit
Problem: a curator’s audience or popularity does not guarantee that its taste matches yours.
Fix: read several recent recommendations and look for explanations that address your specific preferences.
Bottom line
Use Steam’s first-party filters to define the search, not the generic Indie tag; use the Discovery Queue, Wishlist and Ignore controls to improve recommendations; use Curators for human context; and use SteamDB’s AI Content Disclosed tag plus the store-page disclosure to flag declared generative-AI use. No researched tool proves that a game contains no undisclosed AI-generated asset, so the final classification should always state what was disclosed and what remains unknown.
