Start with Truckful’s High or Very High preset and a 60 FPS cap. Developer testing and an independent Steam Deck report both indicate that this target is realistic through most of the game. If forest areas make frame pacing uneven, use a 45 FPS cap (or 40 FPS for a little more headroom) on High or Medium. Ultra is best treated as an image-quality option rather than a locked-60-FPS mode.
Truckful has documented full controller support, including DualShock and DualSense. A custom Steam Input layout is not required for normal play. Keyboard remapping is available through a configuration file on Windows, but a Steam Deck-specific in-game keyboard-remapping screen has not been documented.
Recommended Truckful profiles at a glance
| Goal | Quality preset | Frame-rate cap | What to expect | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Best overall balance | High | 60 FPS | Developer testing reports a steady 60 FPS through most of the game; this is the safest first profile. | Lower image quality than Very High or Ultra. |
| Maximum practical quality | Very High | 60 FPS | An independent hands-on report stayed above 60 FPS almost everywhere, with a single town section reaching 56 FPS. | Small dips can occur in heavier scenes. |
| Battery-oriented play | High or Medium | 40–45 FPS | Lowering the target gives the Deck more rendering time per frame and is the most sensible starting point for longer sessions. | Motion is less fluid than 60 FPS. |
| Visual maximum | Ultra | 45 FPS or lower | Forest areas can drop substantially; a lower cap keeps those scenes from oscillating between high and low frame rates. | Noticeably less responsive than a locked 60 FPS profile. |
These are starting profiles, not promises of identical results on every Steam Deck. Display refresh rate, SteamOS version, game patches, ambient temperature, screen brightness and background downloads all affect the result.
What the available Steam Deck testing actually shows
Developer target and current report
In a pinned Steam discussion dated 25 July 2024, MythicOwl said the team was working toward Truckful running at a stable 60 FPS on the highest settings and toward verification. In a 6 October 2026 Steam update, the developer reported extensive Steam Deck testing and described Truckful as maintaining a steady 60 FPS on high settings throughout most of the game.

Independent Very High and Ultra behavior
A 2026 Steam Deck HQ hands-on report found that the default Very High preset stayed above 60 FPS almost everywhere. The report recorded one town section at 56 FPS and no sub-60 drops during its High-preset run. Ultra behaved differently: forest areas lost enough performance that the author suggested a 45 FPS lock or lower.
The practical pattern is clear. High is the dependable 60-FPS choice, Very High is a reasonable quality upgrade if an occasional town dip does not bother you, and Ultra should be paired with a lower target when you want consistent frame pacing.

- Open your Steam Library on the Deck and select Truckful.
- Launch the game and open its graphics or video settings. Choose High first. If you prefer sharper or richer visuals, test Very High after confirming that High feels stable.
- Set the game’s frame-rate limit to 60 FPS, if the in-game menu provides a limit. If it does not, open the SteamOS Quick Access menu with the … button, go to the Performance tab, enable the per-game profile, and set the Frame Limit control to 60. SteamOS labels can change between releases, so use the Performance tab’s current frame-limit control rather than changing the global limit.
- Leave other graphics options at their preset values for the first run. Changing several options at once makes it difficult to identify which setting caused a visual or performance change.
- Play long enough to visit a town and a forest. Those areas represent the two reported stress cases: a brief town dip on Very High and larger Ultra drops in forests.
- If High remains close to the cap in both areas, keep it as your everyday profile. If Very High is also smooth and you value the visual difference, save it as a second per-game profile or switch to it manually when plugged in.
Use the SteamOS performance overlay while testing. A frame-rate counter that repeatedly falls below the cap is more informative than a short pass through an easy area. If the counter is steady but the game still feels uneven, compare 60 FPS with a 45 FPS cap; a consistent lower cadence can feel better than frequent frame-time spikes.

Choosing between High and Very High
Choose High when consistency matters
High is the evidence-backed default for a 60 FPS target. It gives the Deck more rendering headroom for towns, forests and later areas without requiring you to lower the frame cap. It is also the best baseline for troubleshooting: if a problem appears on High, you can tell whether it is caused by the game, a patch or the Deck environment rather than by an especially demanding preset.
Choose Very High when you can accept a small dip
Very High is close to a locked-60 experience in the independent report, but the recorded 56 FPS town section shows why it should not be described as universally locked. If you notice a brief dip only in that type of area, you can keep the preset and decide whether the image-quality gain is worth it. Lowering the cap to 45 FPS is an alternative when you prefer a consistent frame time over maximum fluidity.
Do not assume Ultra is a free upgrade
The report’s Ultra result was substantially weaker in forests. Ultra can be worthwhile for screenshots or for players who prioritize detail over responsiveness, but it is not the recommended starting point for handheld play. Test it only after High or Very High already meets your expectations.

No reviewed source publishes a Truckful-specific battery-hours result or a universal wattage figure. Start with a lower frame target
- Set the quality preset to High. If you still want to reduce rendering load, try Medium.
- Set the frame cap to 45 FPS. If you are comfortable with slower motion, test 40 FPS.
- Keep the display refresh rate compatible with the chosen cap. A 40 or 45 FPS target is easiest to judge when the display is set to a refresh rate that divides cleanly or otherwise avoids obvious cadence irregularities.
- Play the same route for 10–15 minutes, including a town and a forest, and note the battery percentage, displayed power draw and temperature at the start and end. Repeat the route with the other profile under similar brightness and network conditions.
- Keep the profile that gives you the best combination of readable image quality, stable frame times and acceptable drain. Your measured result is specific to your Deck and is more useful than a claimed universal runtime.
A 40–45 FPS cap can reduce unnecessary rendering compared with chasing 60 FPS, but the exact saving is not established for Truckful. Treat the change as a testable tuning choice, not as a published battery benchmark.
Other low-effort battery checks
- Lower screen brightness to the level you actually need; the display is a significant part of handheld power use.
- Pause downloads and close other games or applications while testing.
- Keep the Deck’s refresh rate and frame cap aligned with your chosen target instead of leaving an unrestricted limit.
- Compare profiles after the game has reached a normal playing temperature, because the first minutes after launch can include loading and shader work that does not represent steady play.
When a 45 FPS cap is the better choice
Use 45 FPS when you see repeated drops from 60 in forests, when you choose Ultra, or when a perfectly stable cadence matters more than maximum responsiveness. A cap prevents the Deck from rendering frames that the display cannot present and reduces the size of swings between easy and demanding scenes.
For the cleanest comparison, test High at 60 FPS and High at 45 FPS on the same route. If 60 is almost always reached and the occasional dip is brief, keep 60. If the counter spends meaningful time below 60, 45 may feel smoother even though the nominal number is lower. Medium at 45 FPS is the fallback when High still cannot hold the target in your particular installation.

Controls and controller remapping
What Truckful supports
The Steam store listing records full controller support and recommends a gamepad. DualShock and DualSense support are also listed. Patch 1.0.1 added PlayStation controller support and mouse control in the main menu, so a player using one of those controllers should not need a workaround merely to navigate menus.

Start with the standard gamepad layout
- Launch Truckful with the Deck’s built-in controls or a connected gamepad.
- Play a short section using the default layout before changing anything. This establishes whether an input is genuinely uncomfortable or simply unfamiliar.
- Open the game’s controller configuration from the Steam Library if one action feels wrong: select Truckful, open the controller icon or the game’s controller settings, choose Edit Layout, and change only the affected binding.
- Save the layout as a personal preset. Keep a note of the original binding so you can restore it after a patch or when troubleshooting.
A community layout is not documented as necessary for Truckful. Steam Input is useful for personal preference, accessibility or an external controller, but a custom layout should be an optional adjustment rather than a prerequisite.
Keyboard remapping has a documented limitation
Patch 1.0.2 added a simple keyboard-remapping file that appears after the first run at %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowMythicOwlTruckfulkeyboard.txt. That is a Windows path. The available documentation does not establish an equivalent Steam Deck-native in-game rebinding screen or require a particular community layout.
If you are editing the file on a Windows installation, close the game first, make a backup copy, change only the documented key entries, then relaunch and test one action at a time. On SteamOS, do not assume that the Windows path exists or that copying a Windows configuration file will produce the same result; use the gamepad layout unless the developer documents a Linux-specific method.

Compatibility status and update cautions
An unofficial settings guide recorded that Valve’s storefront still showed no Verified or Playable badge on 13 October 2026. That status is separate from the developer’s testing reports and can change independently. A missing badge does not prove that the game fails on Deck, while a future badge would not make every setting or every scene identical across hardware.

Patch 1.0.3 is reported to improve Steam Deck and SteamOS stability. Because frame pacing and compatibility can change with updates, revisit your frame-time test after installing a new patch. If a previously smooth profile becomes inconsistent, first verify that the game is fully updated, then retest High at 60 FPS before changing several options.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Frame rate falls mainly in forests
- If you are on Ultra, switch to Very High or High.
- Keep the 60 FPS cap only if the lower preset holds it; otherwise test 45 FPS.
- Use Medium at 40–45 FPS if High still produces repeated drops.
A town briefly reaches the mid-50s on Very High
- Decide whether the short dip is visible or distracting during normal play.
- Stay on Very High if the image quality matters more than a perfectly locked number.
- Switch to High for the most reliable 60 FPS behavior.
The counter is high but motion feels uneven
- Check that only one frame limiter is controlling the game; conflicting in-game and SteamOS limits can create irregular pacing.
- Compare a 60 FPS cap with a 45 FPS cap on the same route.
- Disable downloads and close other software before judging the result.
Controls do not match the on-screen prompts
- Confirm that the Deck or controller is selected as the active input device.
- Restore the default Steam Input layout, then change one binding at a time.
- Reconnect an external controller and relaunch if the game started before the controller was available.
Performance changed after an update
- Record the new patch number.
- Reset to High with a 60 FPS cap and retest a town and a forest.
- Only after that baseline should you return to Very High, Ultra or a lower battery profile.
A repeatable way to tune your own Deck
Use this checklist whenever you install Truckful on a different Deck, change SteamOS versions or receive a major game patch:
- Update Truckful and SteamOS, then restart the Deck.
- Set High and 60 FPS as the baseline.
- Enable the performance overlay and play the same town-to-forest route for several minutes.
- Record the lowest observed frame rate, whether the dip was brief or sustained, fan behavior and battery percentage.
- Test Very High at 60 FPS, then Ultra at 45 FPS only if you want the visual comparison.
- For battery play, test High and Medium at 45 FPS (and 40 FPS if desired) under the same brightness and wireless conditions.
- Choose the profile that meets your priority: stable motion, image quality, battery endurance or control comfort.
Keeping these notes prevents a common mistake: treating one short, easy area as proof that a profile is stable everywhere. Towns and forests have already shown different behavior in independent testing, so both belong in a meaningful check.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBottom line
High at 60 FPS is the best first setting for Truckful on Steam Deck. Very High is a credible alternative with an occasional town dip, while Ultra is most sensible with a 45 FPS cap or lower because forests can be substantially heavier. For battery-focused play, use High or Medium at 40–45 FPS and measure the result on your own Deck; there is no published Truckful-specific runtime figure to quote. Full controller support means the default gamepad layout should be enough, and Steam Input remapping remains an optional personal adjustment.
