Keep the game’s output at the Deck’s native 1280×800 resolution. The game is 2D and its minimum requirements are low enough that lowering resolution should not be your first performance intervention. Reducing resolution can make hand-drawn art and text less clear, especially on a compact screen.
How to configure the game step by step
1. Install the standard Steam build
- Install Burn With Me from your Steam library.
- Open the game’s Properties page and leave the Compatibility setting at its default initially. Do not force a Proton version before testing the native Linux option.
- Launch the game once, reach the title screen, and exit normally. This lets Steam finish first-run setup before you create a performance profile.
If Steam presents a native Linux launch option, allow it to run. SteamDB’s executable record identifies a Linux binary, so Proton is not required as the normal starting point.

2. Set the native resolution
- Open the game’s in-game video or display settings.
- Select 1280×800 if the game exposes a resolution selector.
- If the game has no resolution selector, leave the Deck at its native 1280×800 output and use the game’s default full-screen or borderless mode.
Keep the Deck display at its native aspect ratio. If you see black bars, check whether the game is using a fixed aspect ratio or a windowed mode before changing system scaling.
3. Start with the highest quality preset
Select the highest available quality preset, then play through a representative section rather than judging only the title screen. The game is a hand-drawn 2D deckbuilder, and its published minimum specification is modest. There is no evidence that lowering texture or effect quality is necessary on Steam Deck at 1280×800.
If a later update introduces hitching, lower individual effects or animation options one at a time. Keep text, UI, and any image-quality option at their highest values when possible; those are the settings most likely to affect readability.
4. Apply a 60 FPS cap first
- Open the Deck’s Quick Access menu with the … button.
- In the Performance section, enable the per-game profile if it is not already active.
- Set the frame-rate limit to 60 FPS.
- Leave TDP, GPU clock, and manual wattage controls at their defaults.
A 60 FPS cap gives the game a clear ceiling without asking it to render unnecessary frames above the Deck display’s common 60 Hz mode. If the game is consistently comfortable and you want the most fluid presentation, keep this profile.

5. Switch to 40 Hz/40 FPS when you want a quieter balance
- Open Quick Access and go to the Performance section.
- Set the display refresh rate to 40 Hz.
- Set the frame-rate limit to 40 FPS.
- Return to the game and verify that animations remain consistent.
Matching the refresh rate and frame cap avoids asking the display to show repeated or unevenly timed frames. The 40 FPS profile is the practical middle ground: it should feel smoother than 30 FPS while reducing rendering work compared with a 60 FPS target.
6. Use 30 Hz/30 FPS for maximum efficiency
- Set the display refresh rate to 30 Hz in the same Performance controls.
- Set the game’s frame-rate limit to 30 FPS.
- Play for several minutes and confirm that text, card animations, and transitions remain comfortable to you.
This profile prioritizes lower power demand over animation fluidity. It is appropriate for long sessions away from a charger, but it is not the first choice if you are sensitive to 30 FPS motion.
Does Burn With Me run at 60 FPS on Steam Deck?
The available public information does not establish a measured 60 FPS result. Steam lists Linux support and modest minimum requirements, and the game’s 2D structure makes a 60 FPS target reasonable, but there is no published Deck benchmark, frame-time capture, or guarantee that every scene sustains the cap.

Should you use Proton?
Not initially. SteamDB records a native Linux executable, and the official requirements include Linux/X11. Running the native build avoids adding a compatibility layer and gives you a clean baseline for troubleshooting.
Use Proton only as a diagnostic workaround if the native launch fails, displays incorrectly, or develops a regression after an update. To test it, open the game’s Properties, choose Compatibility, enable the option to force a compatibility tool, select one installed Proton version, and relaunch. Record which version you used so you can revert the change or compare it with the native result.
Do not assume Proton is faster. Without a title-specific test, there is no evidence that it improves frame rate, battery life, input behavior, or shader compilation for this game. If Proton fixes a launch issue, keep it as a compatibility workaround rather than presenting it as the performance recommendation.
Frame-pacing and display checks
Match the cap to the refresh rate
Use 60 FPS with 60 Hz, 40 FPS with 40 Hz, or 30 FPS with 30 Hz. Mismatched values can make motion look uneven even when the average frame rate appears high. Apply the cap in the per-game profile so another title’s settings do not accidentally carry over.

Check the game, not only the menu
Spend a few minutes in an actual chapter. Menus and static card screens may not exercise the same animation, transitions, or effects as gameplay. If you see brief pauses, note where they occur before changing settings; a repeatable transition hitch points to a different problem than a cap that is simply too high.
Leave manual power controls alone at first
TDP limits and manual GPU-clock controls can create a new bottleneck or make diagnosis harder. Because the published requirements are modest, begin with the Deck’s default power management. Experiment only after selecting a stable FPS profile and only if you have a specific goal, such as reducing fan noise.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The game will not launch
- Confirm that Steam has finished downloading updates and that the game is installed on a drive with at least the published 2 GB storage requirement available.
- Restart the Deck and try the native launch again.
- If the native build still fails, test one Proton version as a workaround. Change only the compatibility setting, then retest.
- If a recent patch caused the failure, note the game version and Proton version before reporting it; that information is more useful than changing several settings at once.
The image is black, cropped, or surrounded by unexpected borders
- Set the game to 1280×800 and use full-screen or borderless mode if available.
- Check that the Deck display has not been forced to a different resolution or refresh rate.
- Toggle the game’s window mode once, restart it, and test again.
- If the native build renders incorrectly, compare it with a Proton launch; treat any improvement as a workaround rather than proof that Proton is generally better.
The game feels uneven despite a high FPS number
- Match the refresh rate and frame cap exactly.
- Try 40 Hz/40 FPS instead of an uncapped or fluctuating 60 FPS target.
- Disable any external frame limiter that conflicts with the Deck’s per-game limit, then test one limiter at a time.
- Check a real gameplay section, not only the title screen.
Battery use or fan noise is higher than you want
- Move from 60 Hz/60 FPS to 40 Hz/40 FPS.
- If that is still more power than you want, use 30 Hz/30 FPS.
- Keep 1280×800 and the high-quality preset unless you have evidence that a particular effect is causing the problem.
- Only then consider a conservative TDP adjustment, testing after each change.
There is no published title-specific battery test, so do not treat any runtime estimate as a guarantee. Battery life varies with Deck model, screen brightness, operating-system version, background downloads, and battery condition.

Public information confirms the game’s platform support and genre but does not provide a Steam Deck controller-mapping report. Start with Steam Input’s default gamepad layout. If a button is not recognized, open the game’s controller settings from its Steam page and choose a community or standard gamepad layout only after checking what each binding does.
