Use chiaki-ng for PlayStation console streaming, Greenlight for streaming an Xbox you own, and Microsoft Edge only when you mean Xbox Cloud Gaming. These are different services: the first two send video from a console in your home, while cloud gaming runs the game on Microsoft’s servers. Asobi: Remote Play is available on Steam, but its Steam Deck compatibility is currently marked unknown, so it is an experimental option rather than a dependable recommendation.

No cited source provides a controlled latency or image-quality test between these clients. The practical choice therefore depends on your console, the streaming mode you want, controller features, setup tolerance and whether you accept an unofficial client.

What “remote play” means on a Steam Deck

Console remote play

Console remote play captures a game running on your own PlayStation or Xbox and sends its video and audio to the Deck. Your Deck sends controller input back to that console. The console must be available and configured for remote access, and the quality you perceive depends on both ends of the connection.

Xbox Cloud Gaming

Cloud Gaming is a separate service. The game runs in Microsoft’s data center rather than on your Xbox at home. Opening a browser on the Deck gives you access to eligible cloud titles, but it does not connect the Deck to your personal Xbox console.

Steam Remote Play

Steam Remote Play is Valve’s own mode for streaming a game running on another computer to a connected device. It is not the same as PlayStation Remote Play, Xbox home streaming or Xbox Cloud Gaming. A Steam Deck guide that treats all four as one technology will send you to the wrong client.

Before installing anything

Identify the source machine

  • For a PS4 or PS5 in your home, use the PlayStation client path.
  • For an Xbox One or Xbox Series console in your home, use the Xbox home-streaming path.
  • For games hosted by Microsoft’s cloud, use the Edge browser path.

Check the network you will actually use

Sony’s current PS Remote Play guidance lists 5 Mbps as a minimum broadband speed and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. Those are product guidelines, not a performance guarantee. Sony also notes that results vary with the network environment and the game. A fast internet plan cannot eliminate interference, congestion or a weak wireless link between the Deck and the console.

Prepare accounts and console settings

Sign in with the account required by the relevant platform, and enable the console’s remote-play or streaming function using the manufacturer’s current instructions. Keep the console powered or in the supported standby state, connected to your network and updated. Do not assume that a client installation alone makes a console discoverable.

Decide whether you need docked play

A Deck used on its built-in controls has different ergonomics from one connected to a television and external gamepad. The cited material does not establish that a USB-C Ethernet adapter is required, nor does it test any adapter. Treat wired networking as an optional design choice for a compatible dock, not a prerequisite or a measured upgrade.

PlayStation console streaming: chiaki-ng

Why it is the leading Deck-oriented choice

chiaki-ng describes itself as the next-generation open-source PlayStation remote-play client and states support for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on supported operating systems. Its controller documentation specifically discusses Steam Deck layouts, touch controls, gyro, DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers. That combination makes it the most directly documented option for a Deck owner who wants to stream a console they already own.

“Deck-oriented” does not mean official. The project states that it is not endorsed or certified by Sony. Sony’s own PS Remote Play documentation lists compatible mobile devices, Windows, Mac and selected Android TV devices, but does not list SteamOS or Steam Deck. Use chiaki-ng as an independent client, not as proof of official Steam Deck support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

General setup workflow

  1. Configure the PlayStation first. In the console’s current Remote Play settings, enable remote play and complete any account or standby requirements Sony specifies for your model.
  2. Install chiaki-ng using its current Steam Deck instructions. Use the project’s published package or installation method rather than an old community guide. Package formats and menu labels can change.
  3. Open the client in Desktop Mode for initial configuration. Follow the project’s registration and connection prompts, then select the PS4 or PS5 that appears on the same reachable network.
  4. Map the controls deliberately. Start with the documented Deck layout. Test touch controls, gyro and any DualSense features you care about instead of assuming every game exposes them identically.
  5. Add the working launch entry to your Steam library if desired. This lets you return to Gaming Mode after the first successful connection, while keeping Desktop Mode available for changes.
  6. Run a short test before a long session. Check video, game audio, every essential button and the behavior you get when the Deck leaves and rejoins the network.

The exact registration screens and package names can change; the project’s live documentation is the authority for those details. Do not copy a command from an undated post if it conflicts with the current instructions.

Controller features and limits

The project documentation covers layouts, touch, gyro and DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers, but feature support is not the same as a guarantee that every title uses every effect. A game may ignore gyro input, provide no adaptive-trigger effect or behave differently when the Deck is emulating a controller. Test the controls that matter for the particular game.

When chiaki-ng is the wrong answer

  • You want Xbox Cloud Gaming rather than a PlayStation console.
  • You do not own or cannot reach a PS4 or PS5.
  • You require an officially listed SteamOS client. Sony’s published device list does not provide that assurance.
  • Your deciding criterion is a proven latency champion. The cited material contains no controlled comparison.

Xbox console streaming: Greenlight

What Greenlight provides

Greenlight describes itself as an open-source client for xCloud and Xbox home streaming. Its project information lists Linux, macOS, Windows and Steam Deck support, plus Xbox One and Xbox Series video and audio streaming, gamepad controls and a built-in friends list. For a Deck owner who wants to reach an Xbox console at home, it is the clearest evidenced option in this source set.

  • Ready to use, right out of the box; no external power adapter needed
  • Slim, compact size and lightweight aluminum housing for easy portability

The project also says the Deck version has been reported to work with some small bugs and side effects. That wording matters: expect to troubleshoot rather than treating compatibility as flawless. Greenlight says it is not affiliated with Microsoft or Xbox, so installation does not turn it into an official Xbox application.

General setup workflow

  1. Enable remote features on the Xbox. Use the console’s current remote-play and power settings, and verify that the console is online and signed in.
  2. Install the current Greenlight build for Steam Deck. Follow the project’s present Linux or Deck instructions. Avoid assuming that a package made for another distribution has identical permissions or controller behavior.
  3. Sign in through the project’s account flow. Complete the authorization requested by the current build, then confirm that your console appears in the client.
  4. Connect a gamepad or use the Deck controls. Check the mapping in a low-stakes game before launching a competitive or progress-sensitive session.
  5. Test both video and audio. A connection that displays a picture can still have missing sound, delayed input or intermittent reconnects.
  6. Record the failure condition. If a bug appears only after sleep, docking, account switching or a network change, note that sequence before changing several settings at once.

Greenlight is not the only conceivable route

A search result may make Greenlight look like the only way to play Xbox Remote Play on a Deck, but the available evidence supports a different, narrower statement: it is the clearly documented open-source choice here. That does not prove that no other client exists. It does mean that an alternative needs its own current compatibility and maintenance evidence before you should depend on it.

Xbox Cloud Gaming in Microsoft Edge

Use this when the game is in the cloud

Microsoft publishes instructions for setting up Xbox Cloud Gaming in Microsoft Edge on Steam Deck. This route is appropriate when you want eligible cloud titles without streaming from an Xbox console in your home. It cannot wake, control or mirror your personal Xbox as a home-streaming client would.

What Microsoft’s support caveat means

Microsoft says it does not actively maintain the Edge Flatpak and does not officially support Edge on SteamOS. The browser path can therefore be useful while still carrying a support boundary. Browser updates, controller behavior and SteamOS integration may require attention that an officially supported platform would not.

General browser setup workflow

  1. Switch to Desktop Mode. Use the software source and browser method described in Microsoft’s current Steam Deck instructions.
  2. Install or update the supported Edge package described there. Do not substitute a random browser build if the instruction page specifies a particular package format.
  3. Sign in to the cloud-gaming service. Confirm that your account and subscription meet the service’s current eligibility rules; those rules can change independently of the Deck.
  4. Pair or enable the controller. Test the Deck controls in the browser before starting a long stream.
  5. Launch an eligible title and check the network. Watch for input delay, audio dropouts and resolution changes, especially on a busy wireless network.
  6. Return to Gaming Mode only after the browser workflow is reliable. If you create a library shortcut, keep the original Desktop Mode steps available for maintenance.

Asobi: Remote Play: an emerging option

Asobi: Remote Play is listed on Steam with an October 9, 2026 release date and a free-to-play designation. Steam currently marks its Steam Deck compatibility as unknown. That status is the decisive fact for a Deck recommendation: availability in the store is not the same as verified Deck support.

An earlier report dated August 12, 2026 described a pre-release test and discussed claimed features such as PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming and video modes. Because the Steam listing is newer and release status changed afterward, those pre-release claims should not be treated as current capabilities without checking the live listing or the developer’s current documentation.

How to evaluate it safely

  • Read the current Steam Deck compatibility indicator and recent developer notes before installing.
  • Check whether the current release supports your intended PS4 or PS5 workflow, rather than assuming feature parity with chiaki-ng.
  • Test with a game where a disconnect will not lose important progress.
  • Keep a documented, known-working client available if the Deck is your primary way to play.

Troubleshooting remote-play problems

The console does not appear

  • Confirm that the Deck and console are signed in to the intended accounts.
  • Check that remote play is enabled on the console and that it is awake or in the supported standby state.
  • Verify that both devices can reach the same network path. Guest Wi-Fi and client isolation can prevent discovery.
  • Restart the client and console before changing advanced settings.

Video works but controls do not

  • Open the client’s controller or layout settings and select the documented Deck profile.
  • Disconnect another paired controller temporarily to remove ambiguity about which device has focus.
  • Test one button at a time in a safe menu, then return to the game.
  • For chiaki-ng, check touch, gyro and DualSense-specific mappings separately; not every title uses every feature.

Input feels delayed or the picture breaks up

  • Move the Deck closer to the access point or reduce competing traffic.
  • Pause downloads and video streams on the same network.
  • Compare a short session at another time of day; congestion can be intermittent.
  • Use Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps better-experience guidance as a baseline for PlayStation streaming, not as a promise of low latency.

The client works until sleep or docking

  • Re-test after waking the Deck, reconnecting the dock and changing displays.
  • Note whether the controller, audio output or network changed during the transition.
  • Apply updates from the project or browser’s current documentation before reverting to old packages.

You need help from the platform owner

For chiaki-ng and Greenlight, start with the project’s issue tracker or documentation because they are third-party clients. For account eligibility, console settings and cloud-service conditions, consult the relevant Sony or Microsoft support material. Keep those support boundaries separate: an official console service may decline to troubleshoot an unofficial Deck client, while a project cannot change a platform subscription rule.

Security, privacy and maintenance considerations

Use only the account-authorization flow described by the client’s current documentation. Do not paste credentials into an unrelated script or download an installer from an unverified mirror. Check release notes before updating, especially when a Deck shortcut depends on a particular package. A working client can stop connecting after a console, operating-system or service change; keeping the project’s current instructions bookmarked locally helps you recover without guessing.

Bottom line by console and mode

For PlayStation console remote play, chiaki-ng is the strongest documented starting point for Steam Deck because it explicitly covers PS4, PS5 and Deck controller features. For Xbox console streaming, Greenlight is the clearest evidenced open-source route, with the expectation that some Deck bugs may remain. For Xbox Cloud Gaming, follow Microsoft’s Edge-on-Deck instructions, while recognizing the browser’s SteamOS support limitations. Asobi: Remote Play is worth watching, but an “unknown” Deck-compatibility label keeps it out of the dependable recommendation category.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Greenlight the only way to play Xbox Remote Play on a Steam Deck?

The available documentation identifies Greenlight as the clearly evidenced open-source option, not as the proven only option. Other clients should be judged by their current Deck compatibility, maintenance and account flow before you rely on them.

Does chiaki-ng mean Sony officially supports Steam Deck?

No. chiaki-ng is an independent client. Sony’s published PS Remote Play device list names mobile devices, Windows, Mac and selected Android TV devices, but does not list SteamOS or Steam Deck.

Can Xbox Cloud Gaming connect to my Xbox at home?

No. Cloud Gaming runs eligible games on Microsoft’s servers. To stream a game running on your own Xbox One or Xbox Series console, use a home-streaming client such as Greenlight.

Should I install Asobi: Remote Play now?
