The most reliable Remote Play layout is a wired PS5 connected to the router with a Cat6 Ethernet cable and a Steam Deck connected to the router’s 5 GHz Wi‑Fi network from a strong-signal location. Then remove competing traffic, verify NAT and the connection speed, and reduce streaming quality only if the link remains unstable.

Download speed by itself does not determine playability. Latency, jitter, packet loss, wireless interference, and a blocked NAT path can produce delayed controls or stutter even on a fast internet plan.

The recommended baseline

Use this as the starting configuration before changing game settings or repeatedly reinstalling a Remote Play client.

Component Recommended setting Reason
PS5 network link Ethernet from the console to the home router, preferably with a normal Cat6 cable A wired path avoids the console’s wireless interference and normally gives lower, steadier latency.
Steam Deck link Router’s 5 GHz SSID; use 802.11ac when available, or 5 GHz 802.11n as the next-best choice Steam identifies 5 GHz as less congested than 2.4 GHz, although its shorter range makes signal quality important.
Connection speed At least 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download; 15 Mbps or more in each direction for Sony’s best-performance target These are PlayStation’s published thresholds, not a guarantee that every household will receive identical results.
Home-network traffic Pause large downloads, cloud backups, 4K streaming, and other heavy transfers while playing Competing traffic can create queueing delay and jitter even when the internet plan has a high headline speed.
NAT and firewall Do not use NAT Type 3 or an unavailable NAT type; check that Remote Play traffic is permitted PlayStation warns that those NAT conditions can prevent Remote Play from working.
Quality fallback If the link is weak, choose 540p (Standard) or 360p (Low) and Standard frame rate Reducing the stream’s demand can restore continuity when capacity or wireless conditions are marginal.

Why latency and jitter matter more than a large speed number

Remote Play sends your controls to the PS5 and returns a live video stream. A speed test that reports a high download rate measures capacity under the test’s conditions; it does not promise that packets will arrive at a consistent interval during a busy evening. That consistency is what makes controls feel immediate.

Latency

Latency is the time for a packet to travel between the Deck, router, and PS5 (and, for an away-from-home session, through the internet). A low average is useful, but a connection with occasional large spikes can feel worse than a slightly slower connection that remains stable.

Jitter and packet loss

Jitter is variation in packet arrival time. The client may have to wait for late packets or conceal missing video data, which appears as hitching, blocky frames, or a brief freeze. Wireless interference, a weak 5 GHz signal, and a saturated upload queue are common causes.

Contention

Another person’s upload, a console download, or a cloud-sync job can fill the router’s queue. The result is often delayed controls while a speed test taken at another moment still looks excellent. Removing those transfers is a faster diagnostic than changing in-game graphics options.

Set up the PS5 and Steam Deck in the right order

1. Connect the PS5 to the router with Ethernet

  1. Place the router and PS5 where a cable can reach without being pinched or sharply bent.
  2. Plug one end of a Cat6 Ethernet cable into the PS5’s network port and the other into a LAN port on the router. A normal, standards-compliant cable is sufficient; a special gaming cable is not required.
  3. On the PS5, open Settings → Network → Connection Status → Test Internet Connection. Confirm that the console reports a wired connection and record the measured upload and download values.
  4. Run Remote Play from the Deck while the console remains in the same location. If stutter disappears after wiring the PS5, the console’s former Wi‑Fi hop was the limiting part of the path.

Sony describes Ethernet as “the fastest and most reliable way to connect your PlayStation to your home network” and notes that it provides lower latency than Wi‑Fi in this context. If a cable cannot reach, keep the PS5 as close to the router as practical and use the strongest available wireless band, but treat that as a compromise rather than an equal substitute.

2. Put the Steam Deck on the 5 GHz SSID

  1. Open the Deck’s network controls and select the router’s network name that corresponds to 5 GHz.
  2. Prefer an 802.11ac connection. Steam lists 5 GHz 802.11n as the next-best option when 802.11ac is unavailable.
  3. Test from the seat where you actually play. 5 GHz generally has less interference than 2.4 GHz, but it does not travel through walls as well. A weak 5 GHz signal can therefore perform worse than a strong, uncrowded alternative.
  4. If the Deck keeps roaming to a different band or access point, check the router’s connected-device information and reconnect to the intended 5 GHz network before judging Remote Play.

PlayStation’s troubleshooting guidance also says to use 5 GHz Wi‑Fi for the device connected to the internet. The practical goal is not merely seeing “5 GHz” in a menu; it is maintaining a strong, stable signal at the play position.

3. Remove avoidable wireless and internet interference

  1. Pause game, operating-system, and cloud-storage downloads on the PS5, Deck, computers, and phones.
  2. Stop high-bandwidth video streams or large uploads elsewhere in the home during a play session.
  3. In the router’s administration interface, enable a device-priority or QoS feature if the model provides one. Give priority to the PS5 and the Deck rather than assuming the router will classify game traffic correctly.
  4. Install the router’s current firmware, following the manufacturer’s update process. Firmware updates can address wireless stability and queue-management defects.
  5. Repeat the Remote Play test while other devices are idle, then again during normal household use. The difference tells you whether contention, rather than the ISP line rate, is the trigger.

Steam specifically recommends removing other wireless interference and prioritizing streaming devices with QoS or device-priority controls where supported. These controls cannot create bandwidth that the connection does not have, but they can prevent a bulk transfer from monopolizing the queue.

4. Verify speed, NAT, and firewall behavior

On the PS5, use Settings → Network → Connection Status → Test Internet Connection. PlayStation publishes 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download as the minimum for Remote Play. Its best-performance guidance is at least 15 Mbps upload and 15 Mbps download. The figures apply in both directions; a fast download result does not compensate for an upload rate below the target.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the NAT result in the same network-status area. PlayStation warns that NAT Type 3, or a NAT type reported as unavailable, may prevent Remote Play. This matters most when the Deck is connecting from outside the home, but a restrictive firewall can also interfere with discovery or session setup on a local network.

  • The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.

PlayStation identifies UDP port 8572 as used by Remote Play. If a router firewall, carrier-grade NAT, or manual security policy blocks that traffic, follow the router and PlayStation instructions for allowing the documented service rather than opening unrelated ports. Do not expose the router’s administration interface to the public internet while troubleshooting.

5. Adjust Remote Play quality only after the network basics

When Ethernet, 5 GHz coverage, traffic control, and NAT checks do not produce a stable session, lower the stream demand in the Remote Play client. Sony’s quality guidance lists Resolution: Standard (540p) or Low (360p), with Frame rate: Standard, for a weak connection.

For PS5 and PS4 Pro, Sony notes that the application may select up to 1080p automatically according to connection quality. Consequently, a PS5 client may not expose exactly the same manual resolution controls documented for a PS4. If the app offers fewer choices, use the available automatic mode and improve the link or reduce other traffic instead of looking for a missing setting.

Router choices that improve consistency

Use prioritization for the two endpoints

QoS and device-priority names vary by router. Select the PS5 and Steam Deck by their device names or hardware addresses when the router allows that, then place them above bulk-download devices. Prioritization is most useful when the connection is busy; it will not fix a weak 5 GHz signal or a blocked NAT.

Keep the 5 GHz path in good coverage

5 GHz trades range for lower typical congestion. Place the router in an open, central position rather than inside a cabinet or behind dense furniture. If the Deck is separated by several walls, test the actual play seat before deciding that 5 GHz is always better. A mesh system or additional access point can help only when it gives the Deck a genuinely stronger path; adding hardware does not automatically reduce latency.

Prefer a stable band over a nominally faster one

Link-rate indicators are theoretical radio rates, not Remote Play performance. A stable connection with fewer retransmissions is preferable to a high indicated rate that repeatedly drops packets. Use the router’s client list or the Deck’s network details to confirm which band and access point are active during a stutter.

Compare the practical connection layouts

PS5 connection Deck connection Likely result When to choose it
Ethernet Strong 5 GHz Best balance of low console latency and reduced handheld interference Default home setup
Ethernet Weak 5 GHz Console side is solid, but the Deck can still stutter or lose frames Move closer to the router, improve access-point placement, or test another stable band
Wi‑Fi Strong 5 GHz Can work well, but two wireless links leave more opportunity for interference When running Ethernet to the PS5 is impractical
Wi‑Fi on a congested 2.4 GHz network 2.4 GHz or marginal 5 GHz More vulnerable to interference, jitter, and range-related retransmissions Only as a coverage fallback after testing; do not select it solely because the signal bars look higher
Ethernet or strong local Wi‑Fi Any band May still fail to connect from outside the home if NAT or firewall rules block Remote Play Check NAT and UDP 8572 before changing image-quality settings

A repeatable troubleshooting sequence

  1. Test the PS5 connection and note upload, download, and NAT results.
  2. Confirm the PS5 is wired and the Deck is on the intended 5 GHz SSID.
  3. Stop every large transfer in the home and run a short Remote Play session.
  4. If the session improves, restore devices one at a time to identify the competing traffic; then use QoS or scheduling for that device.
  5. If it does not improve, test closer to the router to separate coverage from ISP or NAT issues.
  6. Only after those checks, lower resolution to 540p, then 360p if necessary, while leaving frame rate at Standard as Sony recommends for a weak link.
  7. Retest from the same location and under the same household conditions so that each change has a meaningful comparison.

Local play versus playing away from home

On the home network, the PS5 and Deck can often communicate through the router without traversing the public internet. Away from home, the session depends on the upstream connection at the console, the downstream connection at the Deck, and the ability of both networks to pass Remote Play traffic. That is why upload capacity is part of Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps best-performance target.

A NAT Type 3 or unavailable result is a warning sign for remote access, not an image-quality problem. Resolve the routing or firewall restriction first. Port 8572 is the specific UDP port PlayStation identifies for Remote Play; use only the documented rule required by your network equipment and keep other firewall protections enabled.

Quality settings: choose stability or detail deliberately

Mode What Sony documents Use it when Trade-off
Automatic or highest available PS5 and PS4 Pro clients may select up to 1080p based on connection quality The wired-console and 5 GHz-handheld path is stable with minimal competing traffic Uses the most capacity and exposes jitter quickly.
Standard 540p resolution with Standard frame rate The stream is unstable but still has enough capacity for a useful picture Less detail than 1080p, but generally easier for a marginal link to sustain.
Low 360p resolution with Standard frame rate 540p still freezes or drops frames Maximum image softness; controls and continuity take priority.

Resolution changes cannot repair NAT, a disconnected access point, or severe packet loss. They are the final tuning step after the physical links, traffic load, and routing path have been checked.

Pre-session checklist

  • PS5 connected to a router LAN port with Cat6 Ethernet whenever possible.
  • Steam Deck connected to the router’s 5 GHz SSID with a strong signal at the play seat.
  • Router firmware current and QoS or device-priority controls configured when needed.
  • Large downloads, uploads, backups, and video streams paused or scheduled around play.
  • PS5 test result at least 5 Mbps in both directions; 15 Mbps in both directions is Sony’s best-performance target.
  • NAT is not Type 3 or unavailable, and the firewall is not blocking UDP 8572.
  • Remote Play quality left high only when the connection is stable; otherwise use 540p or 360p with Standard frame rate.

This order isolates the highest-impact variables first: the PS5’s physical link, the Deck’s radio conditions, competing traffic, and network accessibility. It prevents a quality downgrade from masking a wiring, coverage, or NAT problem that should be fixed at its source.
