Recommended baseline: leave Steam on its default Proton selection, force a different Proton version only for a game that needs it, keep your distribution’s Vulkan drivers current, enable shader pre-caching, and allow background Vulkan shader processing. These settings generally provide the broadest compatibility and the smoothest frame pacing without promising a universal FPS increase. Use launch options as targeted troubleshooting tools, not global performance switches.
What Proton, Vulkan and shader pre-caching each do
Proton is Steam’s compatibility layer for running Windows-only games on Linux. Steam ships multiple Proton versions and lets you choose a compatibility tool globally or for an individual game. The selected version affects how Windows APIs, graphics, media and synchronization behavior are translated on your system.
For graphics, Proton commonly uses DXVK for Direct3D 9, 10 and 11 games and VKD3D-Proton for Direct3D 12 games. Both translate Direct3D workloads to Vulkan. An alternative path, Wine’s wined3d renderer, translates through OpenGL and is mainly useful as a compatibility workaround. The renderer a game uses, your driver version and the game’s own update history can all change the result of a Proton choice.
Vulkan is the graphics API and driver stack that makes the DXVK and VKD3D-Proton paths possible. Proton can start without a fully working Vulkan setup in some cases, but newer Steam Play titles may require current, cutting-edge drivers. The exact package names and installation commands depend on your Linux distribution and GPU vendor.

Shader pre-caching is a Steam feature, not a Proton component. Steam takes hardware-independent shader data supplied by a game, submits it to the video driver, and stores the resulting hardware-specific code in the driver’s on-disk shader cache. When the game later needs that shader, compiled code can be reused instead of being compiled during play. That can reduce shader-compilation hitches and improve frame pacing, although Valve does not publish a universal FPS increase, compilation-time saving or cache-size figure.
The best starting configuration
- Install the current Vulkan driver recommended by your Linux distribution for your GPU.
- Let Steam select Proton automatically unless the game has a known compatibility problem.
- For a game-specific test, open Library → right-click the game → Properties → Compatibility, enable the option to force a compatibility tool, and select the Proton version you want to test.
- Open Steam → Settings → Downloads and enable shader pre-caching.
- In the same area, allow Steam to process Vulkan shaders in the background before launching games.
- Run the game without launch options first. Add a documented option only when you are correcting a specific failure.
This arrangement moves as much shader work as possible outside active gameplay while retaining Steam’s normal Proton selection and Vulkan rendering path.
Choosing a Proton version
Use Steam’s default first
Steam’s default Proton choice is the right first test because it is the version Steam expects for the title’s current configuration. Starting with the default also gives you a clean baseline for diagnosing whether a later change helped or hurt.

Per-game overrides are safer than global changes. In the game’s Properties, open Compatibility, check the box that forces a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, choose a Proton version, close the dialog and launch the game. If the result is worse, return to the same menu and uncheck the override or select the previous version.

A forced version is useful when a game update regresses on the newest Proton release, when an older release is known to work better with that title, or when you are testing whether a compatibility change is responsible for a crash. Keep a note of the working version so you can restore it after a game or driver update.
Compare versions by behavior, not by a generic “fastest” label

There is no universal Proton version that wins for every title, GPU and driver combination. Evaluate one game at a time and change one variable between tests.
Keeping Vulkan drivers ready
Valve’s Proton requirements warn that some newer Steam Play games need very recent Vulkan drivers. A current driver can provide required Vulkan extensions, shader-compiler fixes and compatibility work that an older package lacks.
Install through your distribution’s supported path
Package names and commands vary between distributions, desktop images and GPU vendors. Use your distribution’s current driver documentation and select the Vulkan packages for your specific hardware. Avoid copying a command written for another distribution: mixing repositories or driver branches can leave Steam with mismatched 32-bit and 64-bit libraries.

Check both architecture paths
Many Windows games run as 32-bit processes even on a 64-bit Linux installation. Your distribution may therefore require both 64-bit and 32-bit Vulkan user-space libraries. The exact names are distribution-specific, so verify the multilib instructions in the same vendor documentation used for the main driver.
Update before changing Proton repeatedly
If a game reports that Vulkan is unavailable, shows a blank window or crashes while creating a device, update the GPU driver before cycling through Proton versions. A Proton change cannot supply a missing Vulkan driver or extension. Reboot after a driver update when your distribution recommends it, then test the default Proton selection again.
Enabling and understanding shader pre-caching
Turn on shader pre-caching
- Open the Steam client.
- Choose Steam → Settings.
- Select Downloads.
- Enable the shader pre-caching option.
Steam may download or process shader data when it is available. The work can consume network bandwidth, storage and CPU time, particularly after a driver, Proton or game update invalidates existing cache data.

In the same Downloads settings, enable the option that allows Steam to process Vulkan shaders in the background. Valve identifies this control as the way to let Steam compile shaders before you start a game. With it enabled, Steam can perform preparation while the client is idle instead of postponing all compilation until a draw is first encountered.

The neighboring control disables the shader-pre-caching subsystem. Disabling it does not create a faster shader compiler; it removes Steam’s advance preparation. Compilation can then move to game launch or active gameplay, where the resulting hitch is more visible.
What the cache can and cannot guarantee
Pre-caching reduces a particular class of stutter: a game asks the driver for a shader that has not yet been compiled for your hardware. It cannot eliminate every hitch. Asset streaming, CPU scheduling, game-side shader generation, a driver bug or a cache that the game repeatedly invalidates can still cause pauses. Valve has not published a cross-game number for the FPS effect, the time saved before launch or the disk space used.
When disabling shader pre-caching makes sense
Leave it enabled unless you have a concrete reason to turn it off. Reasonable cases include:
- Unwanted downloads: you have a strict bandwidth limit and prefer to accept possible in-game compilation work.
- Storage pressure: the cache consumes space you need for games or system files.
- A broken cache path: Steam repeatedly processes the same shaders, fails to complete processing or produces behavior that disappears when the subsystem is disabled.
- Controlled troubleshooting: you are comparing a game with and without Steam’s pre-processing and will restore the setting after the test.
After disabling it, expect the trade-off rather than a guaranteed benefit: shader compilation may occur during launch or gameplay, and stutter can return. If the only problem is repeated processing, first check whether the GPU driver, Proton version or game update is invalidating the cache; changing those components can legitimately require a new compilation.

Launch options: useful controls, poor default settings
Steam’s documented pattern for a Proton environment variable is to place the variable before %command% in the game’s launch-options field. Open Library → right-click the game → Properties → General, find Launch Options, enter the option, close the window and launch the game. Remove the text to return to the normal configuration.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D
PROTON_USE_WINED3D switches away from Proton’s Vulkan-based DXVK path to Wine’s wined3d renderer. It can help diagnose a Vulkan or DXVK-specific rendering failure, but it is not a general performance upgrade. Because the graphics path changes, frame rate, visual features and latency may also change. Use it only for a title that exhibits a problem on the normal path, for example:

Valve documents nativevulkanloader as a compatibility control for games that need to use their own Vulkan loader. It also carries a documented virtual-reality downside, so do not apply it globally or leave it enabled when the game does not require it. Test it only for the title whose loader behavior is causing the failure.

Synchronization and GPU-reporting toggles
Proton exposes additional documented variables for synchronization behavior and GPU reporting. These are intended to work around a particular game, driver or hardware-detection issue. A synchronization toggle can change CPU scheduling characteristics; a GPU-reporting toggle can make a title select a different rendering profile. Neither should be treated as a universal FPS switch. Record the original launch-options field so you can remove every test variable cleanly.
Use game-specific video settings before Proton flags
Steam Support notes that manual video changes can affect FPS and gives integrated-GPU users a low-shader-detail and windowed example for supported Valve/Source titles. Those settings are game- and hardware-specific. Apply the game’s own graphics controls first—resolution, shader detail, shadows, upscaling and display mode—before adding a Proton launch option. If a supported Valve/Source title has accumulated unsuitable settings, its documented -autoconfig option can restore detected defaults.
A troubleshooting path that avoids random changes
The game will not launch
- Remove all custom launch options.
- Confirm that the distribution’s Vulkan driver is current and that the required 32-bit libraries are installed according to its documentation.
- Test Steam’s default Proton selection.
- If the failure began after an update, force the previous known-good Proton version per game.
- Only after those checks, test a documented compatibility variable that matches the observed failure.
The game launches but stutters when new effects appear
- Enable shader pre-caching in Steam → Settings → Downloads.
- Enable background Vulkan shader processing.
- Allow processing or downloads to finish before launching the game.
- If stutter persists, determine whether the pauses occur during asset streaming or other CPU/GPU work; pre-caching addresses shader compilation, not every source of hitching.
Steam processes Vulkan shaders on every launch
- Check whether you changed the GPU driver, Proton version or game build; any of these can invalidate hardware-specific cache data.
- Verify that Steam and the game can write to the cache location and that the disk is not full.
- Temporarily test without pre-caching only to isolate the cause, then re-enable it if the setting was not the source of the failure.
- Do not assume repeated processing proves a performance gain is being lost; the authoritative documentation provides no fixed processing time or cache-size threshold.
Vulkan is unavailable or rendering is corrupted
- Update the correct Vulkan packages for your GPU and distribution.
- Restart the session if required by the driver update.
- Retest with default Proton and no launch options.
- Use
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%only as a diagnostic or temporary workaround. If wined3d works while Vulkan does not, the result points toward the Vulkan/driver path rather than proving wined3d is faster.

A practical decision checklist
- Is the issue a launch failure, missing Vulkan support, visual corruption, media playback problem or shader hitch? Identify the symptom before changing anything.
- Is your distribution’s Vulkan stack current for this GPU, including any required 32-bit components?
- Are you changing one game or the whole library? Prefer the game’s Compatibility override for a single title.
- Did the problem begin after a Proton, driver or game update? Test the previous known-good component.
- Is the proposed launch option documented for this exact problem? If not, leave the field empty.
- After a test, can you explain what changed? Remove unsuccessful options and keep only the setting that solved the identified issue.
Valve maintainer kisak-valve described the practical effect of Steam’s subsystem on 15 October 2023: avoiding stutter when a shader would otherwise be compiled at the moment it is needed. That mechanism explains why the recommended baseline combines current Vulkan drivers, Steam’s normal Proton selection and enabled background shader processing, while reserving overrides for games that demonstrate a specific incompatibility.
