GOG is the best Steam alternative for DRM-free ownership and offline installers; Epic Games Store is the strongest choice for mainstream releases and recurring promotions; itch.io is best for indie, experimental and game-jam discoveries; and PC Game Pass suits players who prefer a changing subscription library. No single store replaces Steam for every reader. The right choice depends on whether you value permanent ownership, catalog breadth, low-risk sampling, independent games or a particular publisher’s ecosystem.
You can play PC games without Steam, but the details belong to each store and each game. Check the edition’s DRM, launcher, offline, multiplayer, region and refund requirements before buying.

| Store or service | Best for | Payment model | Launcher and ownership notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| GOG | DRM-free ownership, offline installers and classic-game preservation | One-time purchases; occasional promotions | GOG GALAXY is optional according to GOG’s developer documentation. Individual games can still have their own online or multiplayer requirements. |
| Epic Games Store | Mainstream releases, Epic-published games, promotions and a large general catalog | One-time purchases and recurring promotions, including free-game offers | Account and store requirements vary by title. Epic’s current distribution page reports more than 295 million users. |
| itch.io | Independent, experimental, freeware, game-jam and pay-what-you-want games | Paid, free and pay-what-you-want pricing | Creators choose how their games are delivered. Requirements and support can differ substantially from one project to another. |
| Xbox PC Game Pass | Trying many games without purchasing each one permanently | Recurring subscription | Catalog, title count, features and availability vary over time, by region, plan and platform. |
| Publisher launchers | Players who mainly follow one publisher | Usually one-time purchases, with publisher-specific promotions or subscriptions | Useful for a focused catalog, but not a universal replacement for a multi-publisher store. |
What to compare before leaving Steam
Ownership and DRM
“Buying” a PC game can mean receiving a permanent installer, receiving a license tied to an account, or receiving access through a subscription. GOG’s defining position is DRM-free distribution. Its About page describes GOG as a platform that puts gamers first and respects their need to own games. That makes it the clearest choice when you want downloadable installers that can be stored and used without a mandatory store client.

DRM-free does not mean every game behaves identically. A title may still require an internet connection for multiplayer, third-party services for a specific feature, or a compatible operating system. Conversely, a game sold elsewhere may support offline play even when the store itself uses a client. Check the individual product page and edition rather than inferring requirements from the storefront’s name.
Catalog breadth and specialization
Epic Games Store is positioned as a broad general storefront with major releases and Epic-published titles. itch.io deliberately emphasizes independent digital creators, so its catalog is deeper in prototypes, short games, game-jam entries, experimental projects and freeware than in large-budget releases. A publisher launcher concentrates on one company’s games. PC Game Pass offers a rotating catalog rather than permanent ownership.
How you pay
One-time purchases are easiest to budget for when you know you will return to a game. Free promotions and pay-what-you-want offers reduce the cost of trying unfamiliar projects, but availability can be temporary or creator-controlled. A subscription can be economical for sampling many games, while becoming poor value if you play only one title or stop renewing before finishing it.
Launcher, account and offline behavior
GOG says GALAXY is optional: its documentation explains that users can download, update and play without interacting with the client. Other stores may make their launcher or account part of a title’s installation or authentication path. Some games also call a second publisher service when launched. Treat “store account,” “launcher,” “DRM,” and “online multiplayer account” as separate checks.
Region and time sensitivity
Prices, language support, game availability, free promotions, subscription catalogs and multiplayer access can change by country and over time. A recommendation that is accurate today may not describe your local listing next month. Confirm the current price, edition, catalog status and terms in your region immediately before purchase.

GOG: best for DRM-free PC games and preservation
Why choose GOG
Choose GOG when your priority is keeping a usable copy of a game outside a mandatory client. GOG’s model centers on DRM-free releases and downloadable installers. That is particularly valuable for classic games, older operating systems and players who want to archive installers for later use.
GOG also frames its service around a curated personal collection. Its official description calls it “a home for building and playing your curated game collection” and says it respects players’ need to own games. In practical terms, this makes GOG the strongest Steam alternative for readers who define ownership as access to an installer rather than access granted only while a client or subscription remains available.

- Purchase or redeem the game through your GOG account.
- Open your account’s game library in a web browser and locate the downloadable offline installers when the title provides them.
- Download the installer files and keep a backup on another drive if long-term access matters.
- Run the installer locally and follow the game’s own setup instructions.
- Read the product page for patches, optional extras, multiplayer dependencies and operating-system requirements.
GALAXY can still be convenient for updates and library management, but GOG’s documentation states that it is optional. The optional-client model is a major distinction from stores where a particular game’s authentication or launch process depends on the storefront application.
GOG limitations
- Not every new release appears on GOG, because distribution depends on the publisher and the game’s DRM arrangement.
- DRM-free distribution does not guarantee offline multiplayer, cross-play, mod compatibility or support for every operating system.
- Features can differ between a classic release, a remaster and a modern edition of the same game.
- Refund eligibility and regional availability are product- and policy-specific; verify the current listing before paying.
Epic Games Store: best for mainstream releases and promotions
Why choose Epic
Epic Games Store is the most direct alternative when you want a large, mainstream PC storefront rather than a specialized catalog. It carries major releases and Epic-published titles, and Epic promotes recurring deals and free-game offers. Epic’s current distribution page reports more than 295 million users, a figure associated with the page crawled in 2026.
The large user base can matter for games whose communities, matchmaking or social features are concentrated on Epic. It does not, however, prove that every game supports cross-play or that every title is available in every country. Those are game-level and region-level questions.

What the developer revenue terms mean
Epic announced developer terms in 2025 that provide 100% of the first $1 million in net revenue per product per year, followed by an 88%/12% split. This is a distribution term for developers, not a promise that consumer prices will be lower or that every game uses the same commercial arrangement. It helps explain why some publishers may choose Epic, but it should not be treated as a buyer guarantee.

- You want current, large-budget releases in a general storefront.
- You are willing to check weekly or seasonal promotions for temporary offers.
- You already use Epic-published games and prefer keeping that library together.
- You value a sizable user community, while still checking each game’s multiplayer and account requirements.
Epic trade-offs
Epic is a conventional account-based storefront, so verify the launch and authentication requirements for each title. A free promotion may be tied to your account rather than delivered as an unrestricted offline installer. Storefront availability, pricing and promotion schedules also vary by region and date.
itch.io: best for indie, experimental and game-jam discovery
What makes itch.io different
itch.io describes itself as an open marketplace for independent digital creators with a focus on independent video games. That open structure is its advantage: you can find short projects, prototypes, interactive fiction, freeware, game-jam entries, tools and unusual experiments that may never appear in a large mainstream store.
Pricing is flexible. itch.io hosts paid games, free downloads and pay-what-you-want projects. A low or zero price can make it an excellent place to sample unfamiliar creators, but it also means delivery methods, documentation, update schedules and technical support vary widely.
How to shop safely on itch.io
- Read the project description for the supported operating systems and whether the download is a standalone file, archive or client-based build.
- Check the developer’s notes for installation steps, known issues and required runtimes.
- Look at the project’s update history and community comments for compatibility information.
- Confirm whether the price is fixed, free or pay-what-you-want before downloading.
- Scan unfamiliar files using your normal security tools and keep backups of projects you want to preserve.
Because itch.io is creator-led, do not assume that one project’s offline behavior, controller support or update process applies to another. The marketplace is ideal for discovery, but the individual creator’s documentation is the authority for technical requirements.

Xbox PC Game Pass: best for sampling a changing catalog
PC Game Pass is a subscription alternative rather than a conventional ownership store. It makes sense when you want to try many games, explore genres or play a title for a limited period without buying each one separately.
Microsoft explicitly warns that game titles, number, features and availability vary over time, by region, Xbox Game Pass plan and platform. Treat the catalog as temporary access: a game can leave, move between plans or have different availability in your country. Check the current PC listing before subscribing and again before planning a long playthrough.
Questions to answer before subscribing
- Is the exact game included in the PC plan available to your region?
- Does the plan include the features you need, such as online functionality or a particular edition?
- Will you finish enough games during the billing period to justify recurring access?
- What happens to your access if you cancel or the title leaves the catalog?
Game Pass is strongest for exploration and breadth. It is weaker than a DRM-free purchase when your goal is to archive a permanent installer.

Ubisoft Connect
Ubisoft Connect is designed around Ubisoft’s own ecosystem. Ubisoft documents library management, rewards, discounts and recommendations. Choose it when most of the games you want come from that publisher or when its account features are useful to you. It is not a broad, multi-publisher replacement for Steam.
Battle.net and EA’s launcher
Battle.net and EA’s launcher serve the same general pattern: they matter when a specific publisher’s catalog, account system or online services are central to the games you play. They can be necessary destinations for particular releases, but they do not provide the cross-publisher breadth, indie openness or DRM-free emphasis associated with the alternatives above.

Xbox’s aggregated PC library: a convenience layer, not merged ownership
Xbox also offers an aggregated PC library that can display installed games from Xbox, PC Game Pass, Battle.net and other leading storefronts in one place. This can reduce the annoyance of remembering which launcher contains an installed game.
The aggregation does not merge ownership, licenses or account rights. A game remains governed by the storefront and account that supplied it. If you uninstall a launcher, change accounts or lose access to a subscription, the consolidated view does not create a new entitlement.
Can you play PC games without Steam?
Yes. Use another storefront, a publisher launcher, a subscription service or a creator’s direct download, then follow that title’s requirements.
- Pick the source. Choose GOG for DRM-free installers, Epic for mainstream releases and promotions, itch.io for independent projects, PC Game Pass for subscription access or a publisher launcher for a focused catalog.
- Check the exact edition. Confirm operating-system support, included content, language, controller support and whether the listing is a remaster, deluxe edition or original release.
- Check DRM and account requirements. Look for mandatory clients, third-party accounts, activation steps and online checks.
- Check offline behavior. Determine whether first launch, updates, single-player mode or saved games require an internet connection. Storefront identity alone cannot answer this.
- Check multiplayer dependencies. Online play may require the publisher’s service, a separate account or platform-specific networking even when the game itself was purchased elsewhere.
- Install and preserve what you can. Download the official installer or client, keep purchase receipts and back up DRM-free installers when the license and service allow it.
A decision framework for common player priorities
| Your priority | Start with | Why | Verify before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| I want to own an offline installer | GOG | DRM-free distribution and optional GALAXY support that allows downloads and play without the client | The specific game’s edition, patches, multiplayer and operating-system support |
| I want major new releases and deals | Epic Games Store | Broad mainstream catalog, Epic-published titles and recurring promotions | Regional price, promotion end date, launcher and account requirements |
| I want unusual or tiny indie games | itch.io | Open marketplace focused on independent creators, including free and pay-what-you-want projects | Creator documentation, file safety, updates and compatibility |
| I want to sample many games | PC Game Pass | Subscription access to a changing catalog | Current plan, regional availability, catalog changes and cancellation consequences |
| I mainly play one publisher’s games | That publisher’s launcher | Focused library, rewards and account features | Whether the launcher is mandatory and whether other games you want are excluded |
Purchase checklist
- Compare the exact edition, not just the game title.
- Record whether the purchase is permanent ownership, account licensing or subscription access.
- Read DRM, launcher and internet requirements.
- Confirm regional availability, currency and language support.
- Check multiplayer, cross-play and third-party account dependencies.
- Review the current refund policy for that store and product.
- For creator-led downloads, read the project’s installation and security notes.
- Back up DRM-free installers and purchase records if long-term preservation matters.
The best Steam alternative is therefore a priority match, not a universal winner: GOG for ownership, Epic for mainstream breadth and promotions, itch.io for independent discovery, PC Game Pass for subscription sampling, and publisher launchers when one ecosystem dominates your library.
