For most beginners, Sky Tonight is the best starting point for finding Cassiopeia because it combines a live sky map, point-at-the-sky identification, augmented-reality view, an astronomy calendar, and a stargazing index that considers Moon phase, light pollution, cloud cover, and object visibility times. Choose Stellarium Mobile if you want a realistic planetarium, constellation artwork, red night mode, and offline observing. Choose SkySafari 8 if you need very large catalogs, advanced observing tools, or telescope integration.

All three can turn a phone into a star map, but they solve different problems. The right choice depends on whether you are trying to identify one unfamiliar pattern, plan an entire observing session, work without an internet connection, or control a telescope.

Quick picks

Best for App Why it fits Important qualification
Fast identification and tonight’s visibility Sky Tonight Live map, AR mode, search, time machine, calendar, and a stargazing index using Moon phase, light pollution, cloud cover, and visibility times. It is free to download with an optional subscription. The publisher says objects remain accessible without a subscription, although some may require manual searching.
Realistic learning and offline use Stellarium Mobile Sensor-based pointing, realistic landscape and atmosphere, constellation illustrations, red night mode, and simulations for any time and place. Offline data is reduced. The Plus tier adds deeper catalogs, observing-session predictions, and telescope control.
Advanced observing and telescope work SkySafari 8 Large catalogs, multiple fields of view, an Observe menu, event calendars, and telescope-oriented features. The publisher lists Basic, Plus, and Pro tiers. Store prices can change, so check the current listing before paying.

How a phone app recognizes Cassiopeia

A stargazing app combines a sky database with your phone’s location, clock, compass, accelerometer, and gyroscope. After you grant location and motion permissions, the app calculates which stars should be above your horizon and rotates the map as you move the phone. In a sensor or AR view, it overlays labels and constellation lines on the camera image or on a simulated view of the sky.

This is pattern matching and navigation, not a camera identification test of every visible star. A magnetic case, nearby metal, poor calibration, an incorrect location, or a bright urban sky can make the overlay drift. Use the app to point you toward the pattern, then confirm it against the real sky.

Stellarium Mobile explicitly describes sensor control that can identify a star in a few seconds by pointing the phone at the sky. Its listing also says it can identify stars, constellations, planets, comets, satellites such as the ISS, and other deep-sky objects in real time. These capabilities make it useful when Cassiopeia is not yet familiar, while Sky Tonight’s planning tools are more useful when the question is what to observe during a particular evening.

Find Cassiopeia step by step

  1. Set the observing location. Open the app’s location settings and use the phone’s location service or enter the observing site manually. A location several kilometres away can change the horizon and the time an object rises or sets; a different time zone can shift the clock-based view.
  2. Confirm the date and time. Use the current time for an immediate search. Use a time machine or date-and-time control when planning a future session.
  3. Search for Cassiopeia. Type “Cassiopeia” into the search field and select the constellation result rather than a similarly named deep-sky object. Center the map on it.
  4. Switch to live sensor or AR view. Point the top of the phone toward the part of the sky indicated by the map. If labels do not line up, move the phone slowly through a full rotation so the compass can settle.
  5. Turn on constellation lines or artwork. Cassiopeia is commonly shown as a distinctive W or M of bright stars, depending on its orientation. Artwork helps while learning; turn it off later to reduce clutter and compare only the actual stars.
  6. Protect night vision. Enable red night mode where available, lower screen brightness, and avoid repeatedly opening a bright camera or settings screen.
  7. Check conditions before leaving the app. Use Sky Tonight’s stargazing index or the app’s visibility and event tools to check Moon phase, cloud cover, light pollution, and the hours when Cassiopeia or nearby targets are above the horizon.
  8. Verify the pattern without the phone. Lower the device and look for the same five-star outline. Clouds, trees, buildings, and a bright Moon can hide part of the pattern even when the app is correctly positioned.

Once you recognize Cassiopeia, use it as a signpost toward the Andromeda region and other nearby targets shown by the map. The constellation is a navigation reference, not a guarantee that a galaxy or nebula will be visible; actual visibility depends on sky brightness, transparency, horizon obstructions, equipment, and your location.

Stellarium Mobile: best for a realistic star map and offline learning

What it does well

  • Point-and-identify operation: sensor control lets you point the phone at the sky to identify stars and constellations.
  • Realistic presentation: the app models landscape and atmosphere, making the screen resemble the observing environment rather than a flat chart.
  • Learning aids: constellation illustrations from multiple sky cultures show different traditional interpretations of the same stars.
  • Night observing: a red night mode helps preserve dark adaptation when the phone is outside.
  • Time and place simulation: you can view the sky for any selected time and location, which is useful for planning when Cassiopeia will be highest or setting.
  • Broad object identification: the publisher’s listing includes stars, constellations, planets, comets, satellites, and deep-sky objects.

Offline and catalog considerations

The official product information documents reduced offline data. That means the core map can remain useful without a connection, but not every image, catalog entry, or online resource is necessarily available offline. Download or open the required data while connected, then test airplane mode before travelling to a dark site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The product page also advertises a Gaia DR2 catalog of more than 1.4 billion stars. That is a catalog figure, not a count of stars visible to the naked eye or through a particular telescope. The publisher’s pages show differing catalog figures, so treat counts as version-dependent and verify the current listing if catalog depth matters to you.

What Plus adds

Stellarium Mobile Plus adds deeper catalogs, observing-session predictions, and telescope control. Store pricing is not fixed in the supplied product information and can vary by platform or promotion.

Sky Tonight: best for deciding what to see tonight

Planning tools

Sky Tonight is built around the question “what can I see tonight?” Its interactive map and AR mode identify objects in the direction you point, while its time machine shows how the sky changes through a night or across dates. Search is flexible, and the extended catalog lets you look beyond the most familiar constellations.

The stargazing index combines four practical factors: Moon phase, light pollution, cloud cover, and the times when an object is visible. That combination is more useful for session planning than a simple list of objects that are technically above the horizon. A full Moon, heavy cloud, or a bright urban site can make a nominally visible constellation difficult to see.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calendar and access model

The astronomy calendar tracks events so you can coordinate a session with conjunctions, showers, eclipses, or other scheduled phenomena. Sky Tonight is free to download with an optional subscription. The publisher says all objects remain accessible without subscribing, although some may require manual search rather than the quickest guided route.

Best use with Cassiopeia

Search for Cassiopeia, switch to AR for direction, then use the index to select a time when the constellation is above a clear, dark horizon. After you find it, search for nearby targets and add the relevant events to your plan. The app is a strong choice for a first observing session because it joins identification and scheduling in one workflow.

SkySafari 8: best for advanced catalogs and telescope users

Catalog scale

The SkySafari 8 Pro product page states that it includes more than 100 million stars, 3 million galaxies down to 18th magnitude, and 750,000 solar-system objects. Those figures describe the catalog, not what an unaided eye can see. Objects at those limits generally require suitable optics, a dark site, and accurate pointing.

Observing features

SkySafari 8 provides multiple fields of view so you can switch between a wide constellation context and a narrower eyepiece-style view. Its Observe menu supports building an observing list, and event calendars help you plan around time-sensitive objects. These tools are valuable when Cassiopeia is only the starting point for a long list of targets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Versions and devices

The publisher lists Basic, Plus, and Pro tiers and provides downloads for iOS and Android. The supplied product page does not establish a permanent price for each tier; app-store prices and promotions change, so verify the current amount and included features before upgrading.

Telescope integration

SkySafari is aimed at users who want to connect the app to compatible telescope systems. In that situation, the app’s field-of-view display and catalog depth can help select and frame a target after you identify Cassiopeia. Compatibility depends on the telescope mount and the specific app tier, so confirm support for your hardware before purchase.

Offline observing and protecting night vision

Prepare before leaving coverage

  1. Open the app while connected to the internet.
  2. Set the exact observing location and download or cache any available map, catalog, or imagery data.
  3. Search for Cassiopeia and the secondary targets you intend to observe.
  4. Switch the phone to airplane mode and test the map, search, and sensor view.
  5. Save a dim-screen configuration and enable red night mode if the app provides it.

Reduced offline data in Stellarium Mobile is documented, while the supplied information does not promise equivalent offline behavior for Sky Tonight or SkySafari 8. Do not assume that a feature requiring a live catalog, weather feed, or event update will work at a remote site.

Optional hardware: phone-assisted telescope pointing

Naked-eye identification is enough to learn Cassiopeia. If you want the phone to help aim a telescope, StarSense Explorer push-to telescopes provide an optional hardware path referenced by the SkySafari site. In a push-to system, the phone guides you toward a target while you move the telescope manually; it does not mean the mount automatically slews unless the specific model says so.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying, check the telescope’s optical aperture, mount type, phone compatibility, required app tier, and whether the observing site gives the system a clear view of enough sky for alignment. A large catalog cannot compensate for clouds, trees, a blocked horizon, or an unsteady mount.

Accuracy limits and fixes when the overlay is wrong

The labels are shifted

  • Recalibrate the compass by moving the phone slowly in a figure-eight, then repeat the motion away from magnetic objects.
  • Remove magnetic cases, external battery packs, and metal accessories.
  • Check that the app has the correct location, date, time, and time zone.
  • Use the two-dimensional map to re-center before returning to AR mode.

The app shows stars you cannot see

Catalogs include objects below naked-eye brightness. Light pollution, haze, the Moon, and atmospheric extinction can hide stars that are correctly drawn. Reduce the limiting magnitude or turn on a horizon and light-pollution display when available, then compare the brightest stars first.

Cassiopeia is not visible

The constellation may be below the horizon, behind a building or hill, washed out by twilight or moonlight, or obscured by clouds. Check the app’s visibility times, rotate the time control through the night, and move to a site with a clearer northern horizon. A correct search result does not override real weather or terrain.

The screen ruins dark adaptation

Use red mode, reduce brightness to the lowest readable level, cover unused parts of the screen, and look away from the phone between checks. If you need a bright camera view, switch back to red mode before continuing.

Which app should you choose?

Choose Sky Tonight when planning is the main problem

Select it if your first question is “what is visible tonight?” The combination of the stargazing index, calendar, search, time machine, map, and AR view minimizes the number of separate tools a beginner needs.

Choose Stellarium Mobile when learning the sky is the main problem

Select it if you want a planetarium-like representation, traditional constellation artwork, red night mode, and a documented reduced-data offline mode. The Plus tier becomes relevant when you need deeper catalogs, observing predictions, or telescope control.

Choose SkySafari 8 when equipment and depth are the main problems

Select it for large catalogs, multiple fields of view, an Observe workflow, event planning, and telescope integration. Its Pro catalog figures are aimed at serious observing rather than a first identification of the W-shaped constellation.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you

The recommendations above are based on each publisher’s documented features. No independent comparative accuracy test or user study establishes that one app’s sensor overlay is universally more accurate than another’s. Phone sensors, local magnetic interference, software version, visibility, and user calibration all affect the result. Treat the app as a navigation aid, confirm the pattern in the sky, and choose the feature set that matches your observing style.
