For the smoothest Starfield experience, start with an upscaler at Quality, reduce shadows and volumetric lighting before lowering textures, and cap the frame rate to what your system can sustain in a busy city. Use DLSS on a compatible NVIDIA GPU; use FSR 3 or XeSS on other hardware. Treat New Atlantis or Akila City as your performance test, because a high frame rate in open space does not predict city performance.
The settings below are starting points, not a promise of universal 60 FPS. Starfield is unusually dependent on both GPU and CPU performance, as well as resolution, drivers, game version and location.
Quick starting settings
Apply the profile closest to your hardware, then test it in the busiest settlement you regularly visit. Make one change at a time so you know which setting solved a problem.
| System and target | Upscaler | Key settings | Frame generation and sync |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p mainstream or older GPU | FSR 3 or XeSS at Quality; use Balanced only if the target is still out of reach | Custom preset; shadows, volumetric lighting and reflections at Medium, then Low if cities still collapse; crowd density Low or Medium | Enable only after the native/upscaled frame rate is stable. Do not use it to rescue a very low base rate. |
| 1440p with an RTX GPU | DLSS Quality | Shadows and volumetrics Medium; keep textures high when VRAM permits; crowd density Medium initially | For DLSS Frame Generation, turn VSync off as Bethesda instructs. Check latency and pacing in a settlement. |
| 4K high-end GPU | DLSS or FSR 3 Quality | Keep textures and, when frame time allows, shadows/reflections high. Lower volumetrics or crowd density first when frame time spikes. | FSR 3: Bethesda recommends VSync on with a VRR display. DLSS Frame Generation: VSync off. These recommendations are not interchangeable. |
Why Starfield feels slower in cities
Settlements are the real stress test. New Atlantis and Akila City contain many NPCs, objects, scripts and visibility calculations, so the CPU can become the limit even when the GPU is not fully busy. A lower crowd-density setting reduces that simulation work, but it cannot eliminate every CPU bottleneck.

Space flight and small interiors may show a much higher frame rate. An uncapped 90 FPS in orbit therefore does not mean the game will hold 60 FPS on a crowded city street. Choose a cap that survives your worst normal location. A consistent 45 or 50 FPS can feel better than an uncapped rate that repeatedly falls from 70 to the 30s.
Check requirements and prepare Windows first
Bethesda’s current PC requirements list an SSD as mandatory. They specify Windows 10 version 21H1, a Ryzen 5 2600X or Core i7-6800K, 16 GB of RAM, an RX 5700 or GTX 1070 Ti, DirectX 12 and 125 GB of storage for the minimum configuration. The recommended configuration lists an updated Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation, a Ryzen 5 3600X or Core i5-10600K, 16 GB of RAM, an RX 6800 XT or RTX 2080, DirectX 12, 125 GB and an SSD.
An SSD is more than a loading-time convenience. Streaming a large open world from a hard disk can cause delayed asset loading and uneven frame delivery. Leave free space for Windows, the page file and updates rather than filling the drive to its last gigabyte.

- Set a sensible Windows power mode for a plugged-in desktop or laptop.
- Restart the game after major driver or graphics-setting changes.
Choose the right upscaler
Upscaling is usually the highest-value first adjustment because it lowers the internal render resolution while reconstructing an image at your selected output resolution. Start at Quality. Move to Balanced only when the GPU cannot hold your target; the softer image is preferable to an unstable frame rate, but it should not be your first compromise.
| Upscaler | Use it when | Starting mode | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| DLSS Super Resolution | You have a compatible NVIDIA GPU | Quality | Bethesda supports DLSS Super Resolution, DLAA, Reflex and DLSS Frame Generation on compatible NVIDIA hardware. |
| FSR 3 | You use AMD hardware or another system without DLSS support, and the game exposes FSR 3 | Quality | FSR 3 combines upscaling with optional frame generation. Bethesda’s sync guidance differs from DLSS Frame Generation. |
| XeSS | You need an alternative on supported hardware | Quality | Use Balanced only after confirming that Quality cannot meet the target. |
| Native rendering or DLAA | You already have substantial GPU headroom and value maximum detail | Native or DLAA | These modes increase GPU work. They are not the solution for a GPU-limited system. |
Do not stack several resolution reductions at once. Let the selected upscaler control internal resolution, then make small render-scale adjustments if the game exposes them. A large drop can make fine text, foliage and distant geometry noticeably soft.

Settings with the largest performance impact
GamersNexus’ GPU-bound comparison framework defines a “High” impact as roughly 6–10 percent and “Critical” as 10 percent or more on its test system. Those percentages are relative measurements, not universal promises, but they identify where to look first.
| Setting | Why it costs frames | Recommended approach |
|---|---|---|
| Volumetric lighting | Calculates light scattering through atmospheric effects and can raise GPU frame time substantially. | Medium for most systems; lower to Low before sacrificing textures if frame time spikes. |
| Shadows and shadow quality | Higher cascades and detail require additional rendering and memory bandwidth. | Medium initially; use Low in cities when the GPU remains the limit. |
| Reflections | Reflective surfaces add expensive scene work, especially at higher resolutions. | Medium is a practical starting point. Lower it before reducing texture quality. |
| Crowd density | More people increase CPU simulation, animation and draw-call work. | Low or Medium for CPU-limited cities. Reduce it when GPU usage is not near full. |
| Texture quality | Primarily consumes VRAM and can cause hitching when the card runs short. | Keep it high when VRAM allows and the game is not streaming poorly; lower it if you see memory-related stutter. |
| Motion blur | Changes image appearance but provided no measured performance benefit in the cited GamersNexus table. | Turn it off for a clearer, more responsive view. |
| Film grain and depth of field | Mostly visual effects rather than dependable performance levers. | Disable them if you prefer a cleaner image; do not expect a major FPS gain. |
When adjusting, lower one of the three major GPU levers—volumetric lighting, shadows or reflections—before dropping every option to Low. This preserves the settings that matter most to your preferred image.

Profile: 1080p mainstream or older GPU
Use the Custom preset rather than accepting a blanket Low preset. Choose FSR 3 or XeSS at Quality. If the GPU cannot hold your cap, switch to Balanced before making large cuts elsewhere.
- Set the display resolution to 1920×1080 and select FSR 3 or XeSS Quality.
- Set shadows, volumetric lighting and reflections to Medium.
- Set crowd density to Low; try Medium only if city frame time remains stable.
- Turn motion blur, film grain and depth of field off if you want a sharper view.
- Test New Atlantis, then lower volumetrics or shadows to Low if the GPU still misses the cap.
- Enable frame generation only after the base rate is stable and responsive.
At 1080p, a fast CPU can be as important as the graphics card in cities. If lowering resolution or GPU effects barely changes the city frame rate, stop reducing image quality and investigate the CPU limit instead.
Profile: 1440p RTX GPU
DLSS Quality is the best first choice for a compatible RTX card. Bethesda supports DLSS Super Resolution, DLAA, Reflex and DLSS Frame Generation in the PC version on compatible NVIDIA hardware.

- Use Medium shadows and volumetric lighting, with reflections at Medium.
- Keep textures high if the card has enough VRAM and streaming remains smooth.
- Start crowd density at Medium and reduce it if New Atlantis is CPU-bound.
- Establish a sustainable cap in a crowded settlement before enabling DLSS Frame Generation.
- When DLSS Frame Generation is active, turn VSync off, following Bethesda’s support guidance, then check latency and frame pacing rather than judging the result by the counter alone.
DLAA is an image-quality option, not a performance mode. Use it only when native GPU headroom is ample and you prefer anti-aliasing quality over additional frames.
Profile: 4K high-end GPU
At 3840×2160, even a high-end GPU can become limited by volumetrics, reflections and shadows. Begin with DLSS or FSR 3 Quality and cap the result to a rate the system can sustain in cities.
- Select 4K output and the upscaler’s Quality mode.
- Keep textures high when VRAM permits.
- Use higher shadows and reflections only while frame-time headroom remains in your test settlement.
- Lower volumetric lighting first when GPU frame time spikes; lower crowd density first when GPU utilization is modest and the CPU is busy.
- Use a frame cap instead of chasing an uncapped peak in space.
With FSR 3 on a VRR monitor, Bethesda recommends VSync on. With DLSS Frame Generation, Bethesda says VSync must be off to see its benefit. Select the sync behavior for the technology you are actually using.
Frame generation: when it helps and when it hurts
Frame generation inserts interpolated frames between rendered frames. It can make motion look much smoother, but it does not create equivalent input responsiveness. AMD’s FSR 3 integration guidance says it works best when interpolating from at least 60 FPS, recommends avoiding inputs below 30 FPS, and notes that the technique can roughly double the displayed frame rate.
Use this sequence:
- Disable frame generation and choose an upscaler Quality mode.
- Cap or measure the base rate in a busy settlement and during combat.
- Reduce settings until the base rate is stable and input feels responsive.
- Enable frame generation and check for ghosting, UI artifacts, uneven pacing and latency.
- Keep it enabled only if the visual smoothness is worth the added latency on your display.
If the game is running at 25–35 FPS before interpolation, frame generation may make the counter look better while the controls still feel slow and artifacts become more visible. It is a multiplier for a healthy base rate, not a replacement for one.

Diagnose a GPU limit versus a CPU limit
The correct setting depends on which component is out of time. Use an in-game or driver performance overlay temporarily, then turn overlays off again when troubleshooting if they introduce conflicts.
Signs of a GPU limit
- GPU utilization stays near full while lowering resolution or volumetric effects produces a clear frame-rate gain.
- Frame time improves when you move from Quality to Balanced upscaling.
- The same heavy effects hurt performance indoors and outdoors, not only in crowds.
Lower volumetric lighting, shadows and reflections in that order of convenience, or use the upscaler’s Balanced mode. Keep textures as high as VRAM allows.
Signs of a CPU or simulation limit
- City frame rate is poor while GPU utilization is well below full load.
- Lowering output resolution has little effect in New Atlantis or Akila City.
- Crowd density changes the result more than visual effects do.
Reduce crowd density, close background applications and use a sustainable cap. A faster GPU cannot remove a CPU bottleneck created by NPC simulation and draw calls.

Starfield has no single frame-rate number that represents every location. Use a repeatable route so each change has meaning.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Choose one demanding settlement, preferably New Atlantis or Akila City.
- Use the same save, weather conditions where practical and route through the same busy area.
- Stand still for a few seconds, then walk or sprint through the route for at least one minute.
- Record average frame rate and, more importantly, the worst recurring drops or frame-time spikes.
- Repeat after each setting change, with frame generation off while establishing the base rate.
- Once the base configuration is stable, test travel, combat and interiors before choosing a final cap.
Set the cap below the lowest repeatable rate you want to experience. On a VRR display, this leaves room for fluctuations without repeatedly hitting the panel’s limit.

VRR, VSync and frame pacing
Variable refresh rate (VRR) lets a compatible display follow changing frame delivery, reducing tearing within its operating range. It does not fix a CPU bottleneck or make a low base rate responsive.
Sync settings are technology-specific in Starfield. Bethesda advises VSync off while DLSS Frame Generation is active. For FSR 3, Bethesda recommends VSync on when using a VRR monitor. If you switch technologies, revisit the sync setting rather than copying the previous profile.
A cap that the system can maintain is usually more useful than an uncapped counter. If frame pacing still feels uneven, test with overlays and recording tools disabled, then verify that the cap is being applied by the game or driver you selected—not by two competing limiters.

Official troubleshooting sequence for stutter and low FPS
Bethesda’s performance-support sequence is deliberately simple. Follow it before assuming a graphics option is broken.
- Confirm the installation is on an SSD and that the drive has adequate free space.
- Update the graphics driver for the installed GPU.
- Disable the Steam Overlay and/or Xbox Game Bar while testing.
- Use the launcher or platform’s file-verification function to repair missing or corrupted files.
- Check that Starfield is using the primary, high-performance GPU and the intended power settings.
- Restart the game and retest the same city route.
If the issue began immediately after a driver, mod or setting change, undo that change first. Keep a record of the working profile so you can restore it after updates.
A practical order for every future adjustment
Use this order to avoid sacrificing image quality unnecessarily:
- Confirm SSD installation, drivers, primary GPU and overlays.
- Choose DLSS, FSR 3 or XeSS Quality.
- Measure a busy settlement with frame generation disabled.
- Identify whether the GPU or CPU is limiting performance.
- For a GPU limit, lower volumetric lighting, shadows and reflections one at a time.
- For a CPU limit, lower crowd density and cap the rate.
- Move from Quality to Balanced upscaling only when those changes are insufficient.
- Enable frame generation only after the base rate is stable, then verify latency and pacing.
This approach keeps textures and other visual-priority settings intact whenever your hardware has the necessary VRAM and frame-time headroom.
