Dunkin and Dutch Bros are the clearest Starbucks alternatives for app ordering and loyalty rewards in the United States. Dunkin is the stronger fit if you want order-ahead pickup choices and a higher stated points rate, while Dutch Bros is compelling if its menu and nearby locations suit you. Neither program is universally “best”: the useful comparison is whether your local shop supports the order mode you need, how quickly your normal purchases earn a reward, what you can redeem, and how expiration rules affect you.
Starbucks remains a useful baseline. Its app supports Mobile Order and Pay at participating stores, and an April 22, 2026 announcement describes scheduled pickup up to one hour ahead. The same local-store check matters for every chain.

Which coffee chains let you order ahead and earn rewards?
The official U.S. pages reviewed support two practical alternatives: Dunkin and Dutch Bros. Both combine mobile ordering with a loyalty program, but their mechanics differ enough that comparing points alone can mislead. Starbucks is included as a baseline because its app and recently announced scheduling option set the features many customers expect.

Why Dunkin is the most direct all-around alternative
Dunkin’s official app description combines the core functions most people mean by “order ahead”: choose a nearby store, customize an order, save favorites and collect rewards. Its order-ahead guide says users can pick up in-store, at the drive-thru or curbside where those options are offered. Start with the Dunkin Mobile App page for the current feature list.
How Dunkin mobile ordering works
- Install or open the Dunkin app and sign in to the account that holds your Rewards membership.
- Allow location access or search for the store you normally visit. Check the store’s listed pickup methods rather than assuming every option is enabled.
- Build the order, apply available customizations and save the finished combination as a favorite if you expect to repeat it.
- Select the offered pickup method— in-store, drive-thru or curbside—then review the store, items and payment method before placing the order.
- Use the in-app order status and the location’s instructions for where to collect it. If the selected mode disappears, switch stores or use the mode currently shown for that location.
The official guide’s wording is “all users of the Dunkin’ Mobile App can simply tap to order ahead,” but the practical choices still depend on the store displayed in your app. A chain-level feature description does not guarantee that every nearby branch supports every pickup mode.
Dunkin Rewards earning rates
The current Rewards page states that qualifying purchases earn 10 points per $1. It also describes Boosted Status: after 12 qualifying visits in a calendar month, the stated rate becomes 12 points per $1. The qualification is visit-based and tied to the program’s definition of a qualifying purchase, so do not treat the boosted rate as an automatic rate for every account or every transaction. Review the live Rewards page and terms and FAQ before planning around it.

Dunkin’s terms use two different clocks:
- Unspent points: expire 12 months after the last day of the month in which they were earned.
- Converted rewards: expire 30 days after conversion.
- Delivery: the official FAQ currently says delivery orders cannot earn or redeem Rewards.
That means converting points only when you expect to use the reward soon can be safer than converting everything at once. If delivery is your normal ordering method, verify the current rule in the app before assuming those purchases advance your balance.

When Dutch Bros is the better fit
Dutch Bros combines an Order Ahead function with Dutch Rewards, saved drinks and in-app payment. Its official Order Ahead page describes mobile ordering as a way to save time, but the accompanying FAQ makes an important limitation explicit: Order Ahead is available only at select locations and can vary by shop. Check the exact store in the Order Ahead page or app before changing your routine.
How to check Dutch Bros Order Ahead
- Open the Dutch Bros app and sign in so the order and rewards activity attach to the correct account.
- Choose a nearby shop and look for the Order Ahead option. If it is absent, that location may not support the feature even if another shop does.
- Select a saved drink or build a new one, then review modifiers and the pickup instructions shown for that shop.
- Confirm the payment method and submit only after checking the selected location. Pickup and payment details can differ by shop.
- Follow the app’s pickup directions; do not assume the process is identical at every Dutch Bros location.
Dutch Rewards numbers and what they do—and do not—tell you
The current Dutch Bros Rewards page, accessed October 13, 2026, lists 3 points per $1, 250 points for a free medium drink and 325 points for a free drink of choice. Those are the published thresholds and earn rate. They do not by themselves establish a percentage discount or prove that Dutch Bros offers better value than another chain, because menu prices, qualifying rules and the reward selected determine the practical return.
For a customer who almost always orders a medium drink, the 250-point threshold is the relevant milestone. Someone who values the broadest drink choice may prefer to track progress toward 325 points instead. Use the reward that matches what you would buy anyway rather than selecting a threshold solely because its number looks smaller.

What Starbucks currently offers as a baseline
Starbucks’ general ordering page qualifies Mobile Order and Pay to participating stores. On April 22, 2026, Starbucks announced a scheduling option designed for customers who want to plan a visit up to one hour ahead by choosing a specific pickup time. That is a scheduling window, not a promise that an order will be prepared in one hour.

- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
Use Starbucks as the comparison point for the features you already rely on: saved account details, menu customizations, pickup instructions and Rewards activity. Then open each competing app and compare the same nearby route. A different chain is useful only if it is reachable when you need it and supports the pickup method you actually use.
How to decide which rewards program is best for you
There is no defensible universal winner from the published points figures. Evaluate each program against your own order history using the following sequence.
1. Start with store availability
List the stores on your normal commute, near home and near work or school. In each app, open the specific location and note whether order-ahead, curbside, drive-thru, scheduled pickup or other modes are shown. Dutch Bros explicitly limits Order Ahead to select shops; Dunkin and Starbucks also qualify their features by participating location or availability.
2. Match the pickup workflow
If you need to place an order before leaving home, a standard order-ahead option may be enough. If you need a chosen arrival time, Starbucks’ April 2026 announcement is the only source in this comparison that specifically describes selecting a pickup time up to one hour ahead. Treat that as an announced feature and verify that your local store exposes it. If you collect from a vehicle, check whether the store offers drive-thru or curbside rather than inferring it from the chain’s national app description.

- A Starbucks Card is Always Welcome
- Starbucks Cards redeemable at most SB locations
- It’s a great way to treat a friend. It’s a convenient way to pre-pay for your own regular purchases.
- Amazon.com Gift Cards cannot be used as a method of payment for this item.
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
3. Compare your real basket, not headline points
Write down the items you purchase most often and the normal pre-tax total. Then record how many points each program awards for that type of qualifying purchase and which reward you would actually redeem. Raw rates such as 10 points per dollar, 12 points per dollar or 3 points per dollar are not directly comparable because the redemption thresholds and menu prices differ.
4. Check how quickly points become useful
For Dunkin, calculate how many qualifying dollars or visits your normal routine would require before a reward is available, while remembering that Boosted Status requires 12 qualifying visits in a calendar month. For Dutch Bros, compare your normal spend with the 250-point medium-drink and 325-point drink-of-choice thresholds. Do not count a reward as valuable if you rarely order the item it covers.
5. Apply expiry and exclusion rules
Dunkin’s 12-month points window and 30-day converted-reward window matter most to infrequent visitors or anyone who tends to save points. Its delivery exclusion matters if delivery is your default. For Dutch Bros and Starbucks, read the current in-app terms for the location and market you use; store participation and program conditions can change.
6. Include menu and payment fit
A mathematically attractive earn rate is irrelevant if the chain does not sell the drink or food you want. Check customization depth, saved-order support and whether the payment method you prefer is accepted in the app. These convenience details can determine whether you consistently use the program enough to earn anything.

A practical switch-and-test plan
You can compare programs without abandoning your current account immediately.
- Choose one week of normal orders. Record the store, item, total, pickup mode and whether you ordered in advance.
- Open the alternative apps at the same times. Confirm that nearby locations are open, orderable and offer the pickup method you need.
- Place one small test order. Verify the displayed store, customization, payment confirmation and pickup instructions before committing to a larger routine.
- Check the rewards ledger. After the transaction posts, confirm that the expected qualifying purchase and points appear in the account.
- Review redemption choices. Note the reward you would actually use and its expiration, rather than judging by the balance alone.
- Reassess after several visits. Keep the app that is reliably available on your route and produces rewards you can use before they expire.
Common mistakes and fixes
Assuming every store supports the same feature
Symptom: Order Ahead, curbside or scheduled pickup is missing. Fix: switch to the exact store page in the app, try another nearby location and read the pickup instructions. Dutch Bros states that Order Ahead varies by shop; Starbucks and Dunkin also use participating-store qualifications.
Comparing points as if they were cash
Symptom: A higher points-per-dollar figure appears to guarantee better savings. Fix: compare the spend required for the reward you would redeem, including qualifying-purchase rules and menu price differences.

Converting Dunkin points too early
Symptom: A reward expires before the next visit. Fix: remember the separate 30-day converted-reward period and convert only when you expect to use it; unconverted points follow the longer 12-month rule described in the terms.
Expecting delivery to earn everywhere
Symptom: A delivery order does not add points or allow redemption. Fix: Dunkin’s current FAQ excludes delivery orders from earning and redeeming Rewards. Use an eligible pickup order if earning is important, and check the live FAQ for changes.
Ordering from the wrong store
Symptom: The app shows an order as ready, but you are at a different branch. Fix: verify the store name and address immediately before payment. This check is especially important when several locations are close together or when pickup options differ.
Bottom-line choices
- Choose Dunkin first if you want the broadest documented pickup choices, saved favorites and a published 10-points-per-dollar rate, with a possible 12-points-per-dollar Boosted Status after 12 qualifying monthly visits.
- Choose Dutch Bros first if a participating shop is on your route and its drink menu fits you; track the 250-point medium-drink and 325-point drink-of-choice thresholds, and confirm that your shop supports Order Ahead.
- Stay with Starbucks if its participating-store coverage, menu and app workflow already fit your routine, especially if your local app exposes the announced pickup scheduling option.
These recommendations are U.S.-oriented and based on official pages checked October 13, 2026, plus Starbucks’ April 22, 2026 announcement. Apps, promotions, store participation and loyalty terms can change, so the final authority is the location and account information shown when you place the order.
