There is no independently verified “best” Starbound host for 2026. The right choice depends on whether you need a world that stays online, how many people will play, where they are located, which mods you use, and how much server administration you want to do. For most groups, a managed dedicated server is the simplest way to keep a shared universe available after the original host leaves the game. Self-hosting can cost less and provide complete control, but it requires an always-on machine, network configuration, and your own backup and troubleshooting routine.
This guide explains the differences, the technical requirements, the features to verify before paying, and a practical self-hosting path. Provider capabilities are described as provider claims; no neutral uptime, latency, support, capacity, or mod-compatibility test establishes a universal ranking.

What “best” means for a Starbound server
A normal multiplayer session depends on one player opening the game and acting as the host. A dedicated server is separate server software that can continue running when that player closes the game. The Starbounder multiplayer guide documents this dedicated-server model and the network settings needed to expose it to other players.
That persistence is the main reason to rent hosting. Players can return to the same universe without waiting for one particular person to launch Starbound. It also gives you a predictable place for configuration files, mods, scheduled restarts, and backups. The trade-off is a recurring bill and dependence on the provider’s plan, data-center availability, support process, and file-access tools.

“Best” therefore means the best fit for your group, not the host with the longest feature list. Evaluate these questions first:
- How many people must be able to connect at once?
- Do you need a persistent world that runs around the clock?
- Are you using only the vanilla game, or a substantial mod collection such as Frackin’ Universe?
- Where are most players located, and can the host place the server nearby?
- Who will install updates, edit configuration files, recover backups, and investigate connection problems?
- What will the service cost after any introductory term, including taxes and add-ons?
Managed hosting versus self-hosting
Managed dedicated hosting
A managed host provisions the Starbound server on its infrastructure and supplies a control panel or account tools. Survival Servers describes automatic provisioning, a custom management panel, configuration controls, Steam Workshop mod support, multiple locations, and FTP access on its Starbound service page: https://www.survivalservers.com/services/game_servers/starbound/. Those are the provider’s descriptions, and individual features can depend on the current plan.
Managed hosting is usually the practical choice when no one in the group wants to leave a home computer running, configure router forwarding, or maintain a recovery process. It does not remove all administration: you still need to choose a location, set a password or access policy, keep mod versions aligned, and understand how to restore a world.
Self-hosting at home or on your own virtual machine
Self-hosting gives you control over the operating system, files, server configuration, update timing, and security rules. It can be appropriate when someone in the group already operates an always-on machine and is comfortable with firewall and router settings. The machine must remain powered and connected whenever others need access. A sleep mode, changing home IP address, restrictive firewall, or carrier-grade NAT can make a seemingly correct setup unreachable.
The installation method varies by platform. The self-hosting procedure documented by a provider uses SteamCMD and says a Steam account that owns Starbound is needed for that procedure; do not assume that requirement covers every distribution or future installation method. Check the current game and platform documentation for the files and authentication method applicable to your setup.

| Decision | Managed service | Self-hosted server |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Runs in the provider’s environment after provisioning, subject to that service’s operating terms. | Runs only while your machine, network, and server process remain available. |
| Initial setup | Provider describes automatic provisioning and a management panel. | You install the server, edit configuration, and establish firewall and router access. |
| File and mod control | Provider describes FTP, Workshop installation, and configuration tools; verify plan inclusion. | You control the files directly and choose your own installation workflow. |
| Maintenance | You still manage game settings, mods, permissions, and restores; infrastructure maintenance is handled by the host. | You handle operating-system updates, server updates, security, backups, and recovery. |
| Cost structure | Recurring plan, renewal terms, taxes, and possible add-ons. | No hosting subscription is required, but you supply hardware, electricity, network service, and your time. |
Technical requirements you should verify
Network port and protocol
The Starbounder guide states: “To host a server you will need to forward/allow TCP port 21025 on your router and firewall (if enabled).” Follow that guide for the basic hosting path: Starbounder’s multiplayer instructions. The port must be forwarded to the local address of the machine running the server, and the operating-system firewall must allow the same traffic.
Survival Servers’ documentation separately says UDP may be needed for server-list queries. That is a different use case from the core TCP connection, so do not replace the TCP rule with UDP or assume that opening UDP alone makes a server playable. If your server is reachable by direct address but absent from a list, check the provider’s current listing requirements and your UDP rule.
Player capacity
The Starbounder configuration table lists a default maximum of eight simultaneous players. That is a configuration default, not a measured guarantee that every machine or plan will perform well with eight people. A host’s advertised slot tier likewise should not be treated as proof of capacity. Test your intended mod set and group size, and confirm how the plan handles slot changes.
Persistent data
Universe and character data are the valuable part of a long-running server. Before subscribing, determine which files are included in backups, how often backups run, how long they are retained, whether you can download them, and what the restore procedure looks like. A scheduled-backup label does not by itself establish that restores are reliable or complete.
Location and latency
Choose a data-center region close to most players, then verify the locations actually offered to your account. Survival Servers documents multiple locations and location switching. Availability and latency vary by region and can change, so ask whether switching is free, whether it requires a migration, and whether the server address changes.

Features to compare before buying
Group size and upgrade path
Start with your expected concurrent players, not the total number of people in your community. Leave headroom for events and new friends. Ask whether additional slots can be added without rebuilding the server, whether the universe and character files remain intact during an upgrade, and whether a downgrade is possible without deleting data.
Mod workflow
Find out whether the panel can install Steam Workshop items, whether manual uploads are supported, and whether you can control load order. A convenient one-click installer is useful only if it supports the collection you actually run. Every player must use a compatible mod set; a server-side installation does not automatically make a client’s local files compatible.
Fatality Servers’ setup guide describes both Workshop and manual mod installation, persistent universe files, and account access. It also publishes different memory recommendations for small vanilla use and larger modded scenarios, including Frackin’ Universe-scale setups. Those figures are provider guidance rather than independent benchmarks, so use the guide as a starting point and confirm the current recommendations for your planned mod list: Fatality Servers’ Starbound setup guide.
Backups and restores
Ask specific questions rather than accepting “backups included” as a complete answer:
- Are both universe and player-character files covered?
- What is the schedule, retention period, and storage location?
- Can you create a manual snapshot before installing a mod or changing configuration?
- Can you download a copy for independent safekeeping?
- Can you restore one file or only the whole server?
- How long does a restore normally take, and does it require support?
Administration and access
Compare the actual tools included in the plan: configuration editor, file manager or FTP, console access, restart controls, scheduled restarts, log viewing, and separate user permissions. A technically confident owner may prefer direct files and console access; a casual group may value guided controls and fewer ways to make an accidental change.

Billing and contract terms
No comparable live provider prices were verified for this comparison. Check the checkout total immediately before ordering, including the recurring rate, renewal price, billing interval, taxes, setup fees, storage or backup add-ons, and the cost of changing locations or slots. Confirm the cancellation and data-retention policy so you know how long you have to download the universe after ending service.
What the documented provider options offer
Survival Servers
Survival Servers presents a Starbound dedicated-server service with a custom panel, configuration controls, Steam Workshop mod support, multiple locations, FTP access, and automatic provisioning. These capabilities are claims on its service documentation, not results from an independent test. Confirm that the exact panel functions, locations, backup schedule, and mod tools are included in the plan you select: view the Starbound service information.
Fatality Servers
Fatality Servers publishes a step-by-step Starbound setup guide covering its provider template, access accounts, persistent universe files, and Workshop or manual mod installation. The guide’s memory advice distinguishes vanilla and larger modded scenarios. Treat those recommendations as that provider’s starting guidance, then validate them against your actual player count and mod collection: read the setup guide.
Neither provider can be called objectively superior from these documented features alone. The meaningful comparison is whether the plan you are considering provides the location, slot flexibility, file access, backup coverage, and mod workflow your group requires at the total price shown at checkout.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to self-host a Starbound server
The following sequence describes the decisions common to a self-hosted setup. Exact menu names and installation commands differ by operating system and distribution, so use current platform documentation alongside the Starbounder guide.
Best Value
- Choose an always-on machine. Use a computer or virtual machine that can remain powered, connected, and available whenever players may join. Disable sleep and confirm that the machine’s local address will not change unexpectedly.
- Install the dedicated-server files. The community guide documents launching the dedicated server from Steam. A provider’s SteamCMD procedure requires a Steam account that owns Starbound. Select the installation method appropriate to your platform and verify that the server executable starts without errors.
- Open the server configuration. Set the server name, password or access controls, player limit, and other available options in the configuration file. Keep an untouched copy of the original file so you can recover from a syntax mistake.
- Allow TCP 21025. Create an operating-system firewall rule for TCP port 21025, then forward TCP 21025 on the router to the server machine’s local address. The Starbounder guide identifies this port for hosting.
- Handle server-list discovery if needed. Survival Servers’ guide says UDP may be required for server-list queries. If direct connections work but listing does not, review the current listing instructions and add only the UDP rule required by your setup.
- Start the dedicated process. Launch the server without launching a normal multiplayer session. Keep the process running after closing the game client, and arrange a restart method that you can use after updates or configuration changes.
- Test from outside your home network. Have a player connect using the external address or the method specified by your setup. Testing from another network can reveal a forwarding or carrier-grade NAT problem that an internal test hides.
- Install and document mods. Add one change at a time, record the version and load order, and make a backup before each major modification. Give every player the same compatibility instructions.
- Protect the world files. Copy the universe and character data to a separate location on a schedule. Periodically verify that a backup can actually be opened or restored, rather than assuming that a file copy is usable.
Troubleshooting common failures
Players cannot connect at all
- Confirm that the dedicated-server process is running and listening on the expected port.
- Check both the machine firewall and the router’s TCP 21025 forwarding rule.
- Verify that forwarding points to the server’s current local address.
- Test from an external network; a home router may not support loopback connections from inside the same network.
- Check whether your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, which can prevent inbound connections without a suitable workaround.
The server is reachable directly but does not appear in a list
Direct play and list discovery are separate paths. Review the current server-list requirements and the provider’s note that UDP may be needed for queries. Confirm that the server is announcing the correct name and address and that any required UDP rule is allowed.
A modded client is rejected or behaves differently
Compare the server and client mod lists, versions, dependencies, and load order. Remove the newest change or restore the pre-change backup to identify the conflicting item. Keep a written mod manifest so a returning player can reproduce the same installation.
The world or characters appear to have rolled back
Stop making further changes, preserve the current files, and identify the newest known-good copy. Check whether the provider backs up both universe and character data and whether the restore tool can recover only the affected files. On a self-hosted system, compare your independent copies with the active data directory before restoring.
Players experience inconsistent performance
Record the number of connected players, active mods, server log messages, and time of day. A higher slot allowance does not prove that a particular mod set will run well. Reduce variables, test with fewer players or fewer recently added mods, and ask the provider for the plan’s documented resource limits if you are on managed hosting.
A practical decision framework
Choose managed hosting when
- The world must remain available when the usual host is offline.
- No one wants to maintain router forwarding, an always-on computer, and operating-system updates.
- You value a panel, FTP or file access, and provider-assisted provisioning.
- Your group can accept a recurring charge and will verify renewal and backup terms.
Choose self-hosting when
- You already have a reliable machine and a network that permits inbound connections.
- Someone in the group is comfortable with configuration files, firewall rules, and recovery.
- You need unrestricted control over files, update timing, and server-side changes.
- You are willing to maintain independent backups and diagnose connectivity issues.
Before you commit to any plan
- Write down your expected peak player count and mod collection.
- List the regions where players live and identify the nearest offered location.
- Confirm the included slot range, upgrade process, file access, mod workflow, and backup coverage in writing.
- Calculate the recurring checkout total, not just a promotional first term.
- Download or preserve a copy of your universe and character data before making major changes.
Bottom line
For a group that wants a persistent Starbound universe without operating its own network and machine, a managed dedicated server is usually the lower-effort route. Select the plan only after checking location, player capacity, mod installation, file access, backup and restore details, and the full renewal cost. Self-hosting remains a sound option when you have an always-on, reachable machine and want complete control. The available documentation supports these trade-offs, but it does not support naming one provider as the objectively best Starbound host in 2026.
