A standing desk converter adds a higher work position to the desk you already own. The right choice depends on whether it fits your desk, puts the keyboard at a comfortable height, supports your screens and accessories, and is easy enough to raise or lower in daily use. For a two-tier tabletop option, the VariDesk Pro Plus 36 is one named candidate; its manufacturer specifies important depth and clearance requirements that buyers should check before ordering.

What kind of standing desk converter fits your setup?

Converters generally fall into three mounting styles: a freestanding tabletop riser, a pedestal that clamps to the desk, or an arm attached at the back or side. They add height-adjustable positions without replacing the desk, but differ in footprint, movement, installation, and how they position a keyboard and display. Ergotron outlines these styles in its standing desk converter comparison.

  • Tabletop riser: Sits on the desk and is usually the simplest style to consider when you want to avoid a clamp or arm installation. Check its base and working footprint against the usable desk area.
  • Clamp-mounted pedestal: Attaches at the desk edge, which can free some surface area but requires a compatible edge and enough room for the clamp and movement.
  • Desk arm: Attaches at the back or side and can offer a different range of movement from a tabletop unit. Check desk-edge access, corner constraints, and the intended screen and keyboard arrangement.

Ergotron’s model comparison distinguishes options on factors such as tall-user reach, screen stability, installation, corner fit, suspended keyboards, independent monitor adjustment, and support for monitors above 30 inches. Those are model-specific differences, not guarantees for every product in a mounting category; confirm the current specifications for the exact model.

How to check fit before you buy

Measure the desk and the converter footprint

Measure the clear depth and width available on the desk, including space needed for items that will remain there. For a clamp or arm, also check that the desk edge is accessible and that the attachment will not conflict with a wall, corner, drawer, or other obstruction. Compare those measurements with the manufacturer’s current product dimensions and any stated clearance requirements.

Check keyboard height in both positions

A converter is only useful if its keyboard surface can land at a workable height for you while seated and standing. Consider your desk height and the converter’s lift range together; a lift range by itself does not establish a comfortable fit for every person. If possible, compare the proposed keyboard position with your normal typing posture before deciding.

Plan for the relationship between keyboard and screen

Count every display and laptop, and note how each will sit relative to the keyboard. A two-tier design separates the keyboard and display surfaces, while an independently adjustable monitor may offer another way to position a screen. Check that the configuration you choose supports your specific display arrangement rather than assuming the keyboard and screen will both land correctly by default.

Account for equipment and movement

Include monitors, laptop, keyboard, mouse, and accessories when checking the usable surface and the model’s load rating. Verify both figures in the current manufacturer specification. Also consider how stable the display is likely to be as the unit moves, and whether you can comfortably operate the lift and lower it.

A named two-tier option: VariDesk Pro Plus 36

Vari describes the Pro Plus 36 as a fully assembled, 36-inch-wide, two-tier converter with a weighted base, spring-assisted lift, dual handles, and 11 height settings. Its product page recommends a 25.75-inch-deep work surface for maximum use and vertical clearance for a 17.5-inch rise; that rise does not include the height of monitors or a laptop. These are manufacturer specifications and fit guidance, not a substitute for measuring your own desk and equipment. Compare options by the factors that change daily use

TechGearLab says its review rubric assigns 40% of its overall score to ergonomics, 30% to ease of use, 15% to materials, and 15% to design. Those weights describe that publisher’s method, not an industry standard. It also reports that electric lifts are generally easiest to raise and lower, while gas-spring designs can take effort to lower; individual models differ.

Make the final choice from your measurements

  1. Measure first: Record the desk’s usable width and depth, the available edge for a clamp or arm, and overhead or rear clearance.
  2. Map the equipment: List displays, laptop, keyboard, mouse, and accessories; check the converter’s surface and load specifications against the complete setup.
  3. Check both working heights: Compare the converter’s lift range with the keyboard position you need while seated and standing.
  4. Choose the movement and mounting style: Decide whether a tabletop unit, clamp, or arm suits the desk and whether you prefer electric or manual operation.
  5. Confirm current terms: Check the exact model’s specifications, price, warranty, and return policy with the manufacturer or retailer before buying.
