The best PS4 upgrade is a 2.5-inch SATA SSD that is no thicker than 9.5 mm and at least 160 GB. A 500 GB, 1 TB, or 2 TB model can replace the console’s original hard drive, provided it fits those physical limits. The Crucial BX500 1TB is one documented example for the PS4 Slim. The PS4 Pro benefits most from an SSD because its SATA III interface offers more headroom; original and Slim models still gain faster storage response, but their interface can limit peak throughput.

Replacing the drive requires a complete save backup, model-specific cover and caddy removal, and a USB reinstall of Sony’s system software. The console will be reformatted during setup, so plan to restore saves and reinstall games afterward.

What SSD works in a PS4?

Use a conventional 2.5-inch SATA SSD for PS4. The drive must fit the console’s removable drive bay, be no thicker than 9.5 mm, and have a capacity of at least 160 GB. These are the physical requirements identified in the iFixit PS4 teardown. A standard 2.5-inch SATA drive—not an M.2 module or a desktop 3.5-inch drive—is the documented internal replacement format.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Both SATA II and SATA III 2.5-inch SSDs use the same basic connector family for this purpose. A SATA III SSD is backward-compatible with the PS4’s bay, but the console’s own storage interface determines how much of the drive’s theoretical throughput can be used. Do not expect desktop benchmark speeds simply because the label says SATA III.

Documented example

The iFixit PS4 Slim replacement guide names the Crucial BX500 1TB SSD as an example and describes a 2.5-inch SATA SSD as the faster replacement option compared with a hard disk. The example demonstrates the required type and size; it is not a claim that only that model works.

Drives to avoid

  • NVMe M.2 SSDs: They are not the documented internal form factor for these PS4 replacement bays.
  • 3.5-inch desktop drives: They are physically too large.
  • Drives thicker than 9.5 mm: They may not fit the caddy or cover.
  • Drives below 160 GB: They do not meet the minimum capacity identified by the teardown.
  • External USB SSDs as an internal replacement: An external drive is a different upgrade path and does not replace the console’s internal system drive.

PS4, PS4 Slim, or PS4 Pro: which model benefits most?

All three families use a replaceable 2.5-inch drive, but their storage interfaces differ. The Pro supports SATA III, giving it more interface headroom than the original PS4 family. The original and Slim systems have less headroom, so a fast SSD can be limited by the console rather than by the drive.

Console family Internal replacement format Interface guidance What to expect
Original PS4 2.5-inch SATA, up to 9.5 mm thick, at least 160 GB A SATA III SSD fits the bay, but the console interface limits throughput Faster loading and storage response are the reason to upgrade; no universal percentage improvement is established
PS4 Slim 2.5-inch SATA, up to 9.5 mm thick, at least 160 GB Use the same physical and connector requirements; interface headroom is lower than Pro Loading can improve relative to the original hard drive, with results varying by game and workload
PS4 Pro 2.5-inch SATA, up to 9.5 mm thick, at least 160 GB SATA III support provides greater headroom It is the PS4 model on which an internal SSD is most worthwhile, but results still vary by game

The PS4 Pro’s drive is a simple, non-proprietary replacement according to its teardown. That does not mean every SSD is automatically suitable: physical dimensions, connector orientation, and the caddy remain decisive.

How much capacity should you buy?

The practical choices are usually 500 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB. Capacity affects how many games and applications can remain installed, while the physical fit and interface requirements do not change.

Capacity Best for Trade-off
500 GB Players with a small active library who want the lowest-capacity replacement Fills sooner, so more frequent deletion or reinstallation is likely
1 TB Most users wanting a balance of cost and room Costs more than 500 GB and may still require library management for very large collections
2 TB Large installed libraries and fewer storage-management interruptions Higher purchase cost; confirm the current listing and warranty before buying

The minimum documented capacity is 160 GB, but a drive that small leaves little practical room after the operating system and games are installed. Choose based on how often you want to delete and redownload games, not on a benchmark number. SSD prices, availability, firmware, and retailer listings change, so verify the current price and warranty at the time of purchase.

What performance improvement should you expect?

An SSD’s main benefit is shorter loading and faster storage response compared with the original mechanical hard drive. The improvement is not a fixed percentage: game engines, loading-screen design, patches, save size, and the console model all influence the result. The available guidance supports the direction of the benefit, not one benchmark that applies to every title.

Why the Pro has more headroom

The Pro’s SATA III support allows more of a modern SATA SSD’s capability to reach the console. Original and Slim systems have less interface headroom, so they can still feel more responsive after the swap, but their maximum transfer rate can constrain the drive. A SATA III label therefore indicates compatibility and potential, not a guaranteed Pro-level result on every PS4.

What an SSD will not change

  • It does not turn a PS4 into a newer-generation console.
  • It does not increase graphics quality, frame rate, or CPU performance by itself.
  • It does not guarantee the same loading time in every game.
  • It does not remove the need to reinstall system software after replacing the internal drive.

What you need before opening the console

Prepare the replacement drive, a backup plan, and the reinstallation media before removing the old disk. The Slim guide calls for a Phillips #0 screwdriver and a USB flash drive containing Sony’s official PS4 firmware reinstallation file.

Hardware and tools checklist

  • A 2.5-inch SATA SSD no thicker than 9.5 mm and no smaller than 160 GB.
  • The original PS4 drive caddy and its mounting screws. They are normally reused, so confirm they are present before ordering the SSD.
  • A Phillips #0 screwdriver.
  • A USB storage device with enough room for Sony’s complete reinstallation file.
  • A computer with internet access to download the official reinstallation file.
  • An external drive or USB storage device for saved-data backup if you are not using cloud storage.

Back up first

  1. Sync your trophies while the old drive is still installed and the console is connected to PlayStation Network.
  2. Back up saved data using your chosen supported method. Verify that the most recent saves are present before shutting down.
  3. Copy any screenshots, video clips, or other files you want to keep.
  4. Record which games you will need to reinstall and make sure you can access the associated accounts and licenses.

Replacing the internal drive requires system initialization, so treat the old drive as the source of your data until the new installation has been tested and your saves have been restored.

How to install an SSD in a PS4

The exact cover and caddy sequence varies by the original PS4, Slim revision, and Pro revision. Use the procedure for your model rather than forcing a panel. The common workflow is as follows.

  1. Shut down completely. Select the power-off option and wait until the console is fully off. Do not begin from Rest Mode. Unplug the power cable and all other cables, then place the console on a stable, clean surface.
  2. Identify the correct drive-cover release. The removable cover is different on the original PS4, Slim, and Pro. Follow the model-specific release direction and remove only the panel that exposes the hard-drive caddy.
  3. Remove the caddy retaining screw or latch. Keep the screw in a small container. Do not lose it while the console is open.
  4. Slide out the caddy. Pull it straight out using its handle or exposed edge. Avoid touching the exposed circuit board on the drive.
  5. Transfer the caddy screws. Remove the screws holding the old drive to the caddy with the Phillips #0 screwdriver. Place the SSD in the same orientation, align its connector with the caddy opening, and install the screws without overtightening.
  6. Check alignment before insertion. The SSD’s SATA connector must face the console’s connector exactly as the old drive did. A misaligned drive can prevent the caddy from seating or damage the connector.
  7. Reinsert and secure the caddy. Slide the caddy fully into the bay, reinstall the retaining screw or latch, and replace the cover.
  8. Reconnect the console. Attach the power, display, and controller cables, but leave the prepared USB reinstallation drive available for the next stage.

How to reinstall PS4 system software from USB

Sony’s support instruction is to use a computer to save a system software update file for reinstallation to a USB storage device. A replacement internal drive needs the reinstallation package, not merely a routine update package.

  1. Prepare the USB drive on a computer. Format it in a file system the PS4 recovery process accepts, then create the folder structure required by Sony’s current instructions. Use the exact file name and capitalization specified by Sony for the reinstallation file.
  2. Download the official reinstallation file. Obtain it from Sony’s PS4 system-software support page immediately before installation so you use the current file. Do not rename it casually or combine it with unrelated files.
  3. Copy the file to the required folder. Place the reinstallation file in the folder path Sony specifies. Safely eject the USB drive from the computer.
  4. Connect the USB drive to the PS4. Use a direct USB port on the console rather than a hub.
  5. Enter Safe Mode. With the console off, press and hold the power button until the second beep, then connect the controller with a USB cable and press the controller’s PS button.
  6. Choose the reinstallation option. Select the Safe Mode option that reinstalls system software, not the ordinary update option. Read the warning that the internal storage will be erased and confirm only after checking your backups.
  7. Wait for completion. Do not remove power or the USB drive while the process is running. The PS4 will restart and display the initial setup screens when successful.

Menu names and file requirements can change, so follow the wording on Sony’s current support page if it differs from an older guide. The important distinction is that a new internal drive needs the full reinstallation process.

First boot, restore, and verification

  1. Complete the initial setup and connect the PS4 to the network when prompted.
  2. Sign in to the account associated with your digital games and licenses.
  3. Restore saved data from your backup method. Check a few games to confirm that the expected save files appear before deleting any backup copy.
  4. Reinstall games from disc or your digital library. Apply system and game updates.
  5. Open Settings and confirm that the console reports the expected storage capacity. The displayed usable space will be lower than the number printed on the SSD because system software and formatting consume part of it.
  6. Launch several games and note loading behavior. Compare only like-for-like situations; a patch, online service response, or different save state can change the result.

Troubleshooting an SSD replacement

The PS4 does not detect the SSD

  • Power down and reseat the caddy so the SATA connector is fully engaged.
  • Confirm that the SSD is a 2.5-inch SATA model and no thicker than 9.5 mm.
  • Check that the caddy screws are not misplaced or tightened in a way that prevents the drive from sitting flat.
  • Inspect the caddy connector and the SSD for visible damage.
  • Try the Safe Mode initialization again only after confirming that your backups are safe.

Reinstallation stops or reports that the file cannot be used

  • Download the complete reinstallation package again from Sony rather than using a normal update file.
  • Recheck the USB folder names, file name, capitalization, and placement against Sony’s current instructions.
  • Use a different USB storage device if the console cannot read the first one, and connect it directly to the console.
  • Make sure the PS4 is receiving stable power and do not interrupt the process while the progress indicator is active.

The console starts but saves are missing

  • Confirm that you signed in to the same account used to create the saves.
  • Restore the backup again and check the save-management screen for the affected game.
  • For cloud saves, verify that synchronization completed before the old drive was removed.
  • Do not delete the original backup until several games have launched successfully and their progress is present.

Loading still feels slow

  • Check whether the game is performing a large first-run install or update.
  • Remember that the original and Slim consoles have less interface headroom than the Pro.
  • Compare the same game, mode, save state, and update status; there is no single improvement percentage that applies to every title.
  • Confirm that the SSD is not reporting storage errors and that the system software installation completed normally.

Buying checklist and common mistakes

  • Confirm the dimensions: 2.5-inch width and no more than 9.5 mm thickness.
  • Confirm the interface: SATA, not NVMe M.2.
  • Choose capacity deliberately: 500 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB cover the common upgrade decisions.
  • Check warranty and endurance: these vary by model and should be verified on the current product listing or manufacturer documentation.
  • Check current price and stock: both are volatile and are not permanent specifications.
  • Keep the caddy: the PS4 normally reuses its original caddy and screws.
  • Prepare the USB installer first: opening the console before downloading the reinstallation file can leave you unable to complete setup.
  • Back up before shutdown: a drive swap is not a substitute for a backup plan.

Is an SSD upgrade worth it for your PS4?

For a PS4 with a failing, noisy, or slow mechanical drive, an SSD is a practical replacement that also improves loading responsiveness. A 1 TB 2.5-inch SATA model is a balanced choice for many owners, while 500 GB minimizes the initial capacity and 2 TB reduces how often a large library must be managed. PS4 Pro owners have the strongest technical case because SATA III provides more headroom. Owners of the original PS4 or Slim should still expect the direction of improvement—faster storage behavior—but not a guaranteed percentage or identical results across games.

The upgrade is worthwhile only when you can complete the backup and reinstallation steps safely. The drive’s fit, the retained caddy, the correct Sony reinstallation package, and a verified save backup matter more than chasing a theoretical sequential-speed number the console cannot necessarily use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install a SATA III SSD in an original PS4 or PS4 Slim?

Yes, a SATA III 2.5-inch SSD is physically compatible with the documented drive bay when it is no thicker than 9.5 mm and at least 160 GB. The console’s interface limits throughput, so the drive will not deliver desktop SATA III benchmark speeds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need the PS4 update file or the reinstallation file after replacing the drive?

Use Sony’s complete system-software reinstallation package through Safe Mode. A routine update package is not the same as the full reinstallation file required for a newly replaced internal drive.

Will replacing the drive delete my games and saves?

The reinstallation process initializes the replacement drive. Restore backed-up saves afterward and reinstall games from disc or your digital library; keep the backup until you have verified several saves.

Does an SSD increase PS4 graphics or frame rate?

No. Its supported benefit is faster storage response and loading. Graphics and frame rate remain governed by the console hardware and each game.
