The best PS5 expansion is a PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe SSD with an effective heatsink, a sequential read rating of at least 5,500 MB/s, and a complete drive-plus-heatsink assembly no wider than 25 mm or thicker than 11.25 mm. A 2TB drive is the practical choice for many game libraries; 1TB suits lighter users, while 4TB or 8TB is aimed at players who keep a large installed collection.

What kind of SSD works in a PS5?

PlayStation 5 consoles use an internal expansion bay for an M.2 NVMe drive. Sony’s current specification accepts capacities from 250GB through 8TB and lists the 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110 M.2 length formats. The drive must use a PCIe Gen4x4 interface. Sony recommends a sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster.

M.2 SATA drives are not supported. An M.2 label alone is not enough: M.2 describes the physical card shape, while NVMe over PCIe is the storage protocol and interface the PS5 expansion slot expects.

  • Capacity: 250GB to 8TB.
  • Interface: PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe.
  • Recommended sequential read: 5,500 MB/s or faster.
  • Physical formats: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110.
  • Maximum complete assembly: 25 mm wide and 11.25 mm thick, including the heatsink.
  • Cooling: a heatsink or another effective heat-dissipation structure is required.

Measure the complete assembled drive, not the bare circuit board. A drive that meets the specification without its cooler can become too tall once a heatsink is fitted.

Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.

Which capacity should you buy?

Capacity Best for Practical trade-off
1TB Moderate libraries and players who regularly delete finished games Lower purchase cost, but the extra space can disappear quickly after several large PS5 installs
2TB Most players who want a long-term general-purpose expansion Balances library size and cost per usable terabyte
4TB Large libraries, frequent downloads, and households sharing one console Higher upfront cost; useful when deleting and redownloading is inconvenient
8TB Very large libraries and owners who want to avoid another upgrade Highest purchase price; the capacity is the maximum in Sony’s current specification

The 1TB and 2TB recommendations are practical buying guidance rather than a Sony requirement. To compare deals, divide the current purchase price by the advertised terabytes and compare the resulting cost per terabyte. Check whether the quoted price is for the bare SSD or a heatsink-equipped version; a cheaper bare drive may need a separate cooler.

Advertised decimal capacity is not the same as the free space shown after formatting, system overhead and the PS5’s file structure. Compare drives using their advertised class consistently, then confirm the formatted capacity displayed by your console.

Samsung 990 Pro with heatsink 1TB, 2TB, 4TB 6,900 / 7,450 MB/s Heatsink version available; verify the assembled dimensions High-end, speed-focused option; not described as Sony-certified TechRadar’s guide reported approximately 7,465.49 MB/s read and 6,887.68 MB/s write in its benchmark, plus a roughly 10GB transfer in under four seconds. Those are that guide’s test results, not a PS5 guarantee.
WD_BLACK SN850P 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, 8TB 7,300 / 6,300 MB/s Included Officially licensed for PS5, according to TechRadar’s guide The 8TB model targets very large libraries. The guide cautions that the 1TB and 2TB versions can be poor value when sold at full price.

The supplied product information does not establish a comparable warranty term, live price, usable-terabyte price or exact assembled dimensions for either model. Verify those details on the listing you intend to buy, because capacities, heatsink bundles and regional support can differ.

Official licensing is a useful compatibility signal, but it is not the same as a performance guarantee. Sony says it cannot guarantee every third-party SSD, even when the published requirements are met. Treat both drives as informed choices that still require a dimensional check.

Samsung 990 Pro with heatsink: best when speed is the priority

The 990 Pro is the speed-oriented recommendation in TechRadar’s PS5 guide. Its quoted 6,900 MB/s read and 7,450 MB/s write figures exceed Sony’s 5,500 MB/s read recommendation. TechRadar’s own benchmark measured approximately 7,465.49 MB/s read and 6,887.68 MB/s write, and its test transferred about 10GB in under four seconds.

Choose the factory heatsink version where possible. If you buy a bare 990 Pro, the replacement cooler must keep the entire assembly within Sony’s 25 mm by 11.25 mm envelope. Do not stack a second heatsink over a drive that already has one; Sony recommends against adding another heatsink on top of an existing heatsink.

WD_BLACK SN850P: best for licensed capacity, including 8TB

The SN850P is described by TechRadar as officially licensed for PS5 and includes a heatsink. It is available in 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB versions, with quoted sequential speeds of 7,300 MB/s read and 6,300 MB/s write.

The 8TB version is the straightforward choice if your priority is keeping a very large library installed and avoiding another expansion soon. The 1TB and 2TB versions deserve a price check before purchase: TechRadar’s guide identifies them as potentially poor value at full price, so compare their current cost per terabyte with larger capacities.

Even with the PS5-specific licensing, inspect the listing for the actual model and capacity. Confirm that the heatsink is included in the package you are buying and that its total height fits your console revision.

Choosing a separate PS5 heatsink

A bare Gen4x4 M.2 drive needs an effective cooler before installation. TechRadar’s guide names three PS5-oriented options:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Sabrent M.2 NVMe PS5 heatsink (SB-PSHS): a replacement cooler intended for a bare drive.
  • ElecGear PS5 NVMe SSD Heatsink: a replacement-shield style design. TechRadar notes that this design is too large for PS5 Slim, so it is unsuitable for that revision.
  • icepc M.2 Heatsink for PS5: mounts directly to the SSD rather than replacing the console’s shield.

Before ordering, compare the manufacturer’s dimensions with the drive’s dimensions and add any thermal pads, clips or cover hardware that remains installed. Sony’s limits apply to the finished assembly. An oversized replacement-shield heatsink can fit one console revision and fail to clear the cover on another, particularly when moving between the original PS5 and PS5 Slim. Check the exact model of a PS5 Pro or Slim as well rather than assuming a cooler that fit an earlier chassis will fit yours.

Can you play PS5 games from the added SSD?

Yes. PS5 games can be downloaded, copied, updated and launched directly from an installed M.2 SSD. The expansion acts as fast console storage, so you do not have to move a PS5 title back to the internal drive before playing it.

USB extended storage works differently. It can archive PS5 games and store them when internal space is limited, but PS5 titles on USB must be copied back to the console’s internal storage or the M.2 SSD before they can be played. USB storage remains useful as a lower-cost archive, while the M.2 drive is the practical choice for games you want immediately available.

How to install an M.2 SSD in a PS5

Prepare the console, the SSD with its heatsink, and a #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver. Formatting the drive erases data already on it, so do not install a drive containing files you need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Update the PS5 system software. Install the latest available system update before opening the console. This reduces the chance of troubleshooting an installation with outdated firmware.
  2. Shut down completely. Turn the PS5 off, wait for it to finish powering down, unplug the power cable and disconnect other cables. Allow the console to cool before handling the expansion bay.
  3. Remove the correct console cover. Place the console on a stable, protected surface and remove the cover for your PS5 model. Then remove the expansion-slot cover to expose the M.2 bay.
  4. Set the spacer. The bay uses a movable spacer to support different M.2 lengths. Move it to the hole matching your SSD’s length: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110.
  5. Insert the SSD at an angle. Align the connector notch with the slot and slide the drive in diagonally. Do not force the connector; if it does not seat easily, remove it and recheck orientation.
  6. Secure the drive. Press the free end down onto the correctly positioned spacer and fasten it with the supplied screw. The drive should lie flat without bending.
  7. Reinstall the expansion cover and console cover. Confirm that the heatsink and shield do not foul the cover before snapping or fastening the panels back into place.
  8. Reconnect and format. Reconnect the cables and start the PS5. On first use, follow the on-screen prompt to format the M.2 SSD. Formatting deletes all data on that drive.

If the console does not detect the drive after formatting, turn it off and recheck connector seating, spacer position, the retaining screw and the cover clearance. A SATA M.2 drive, an incompatible interface, or an assembly that exceeds the thickness limit cannot be fixed by formatting.

How much performance should you expect?

Sequential read speed is the easiest specification to compare, but it is not a direct game-loading benchmark. Sony’s guidance makes clear that an M.2 SSD can perform differently from the internal SSD even when its sequential read figure exceeds 5,500 MB/s. Game engines, small-file access, compression, patches and the console’s own storage controller all influence real-world behavior.

Use the speed number as a compatibility threshold and a way to distinguish older or slower drives, not as a promise that a 7,300 MB/s model will make every title load proportionally faster than a 5,500 MB/s model. Capacity, heatsink fit and price are usually more important buying decisions once the drive clears Sony’s requirement.

PS5, PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro fit checks

The storage requirements describe the M.2 expansion system, but physical clearance still depends on the console revision and the heatsink design. The critical measurement is the complete drive-plus-cooler assembly: no more than 25 mm wide and 11.25 mm thick.

  • Confirm whether the listing includes a heatsink or shows a bare drive.
  • Read the manufacturer’s dimensions with thermal pads and clips installed.
  • Do not assume a replacement-shield cooler fits every revision.
  • Be especially cautious with PS5 Slim: TechRadar identifies the ElecGear replacement-shield design as too large for it.
  • For a PS5 Pro, verify the console-specific clearance in the current installation instructions before buying a cooler.

If a listing gives only the bare SSD thickness, treat that as incomplete information. The console’s limit applies after the cooling solution is attached.

Buying checklist

  • PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe interface, not M.2 SATA.
  • Sequential read rating of at least 5,500 MB/s.
  • Capacity selected for your library: 1TB, 2TB, 4TB or 8TB.
  • Heatsink included, or a separately chosen cooler that stays within 25 mm by 11.25 mm.
  • Supported M.2 length and a correctly positioned spacer.
  • Current total price divided by advertised terabytes, including any cooler cost.
  • Return and support terms for your region; a Sony requirement is not a guarantee for every third-party model.
  • Exact console revision checked before buying a replacement-shield heatsink.

Common installation and buying mistakes

Buying an M.2 SATA drive

The drive may look identical to an NVMe model, but Sony states that M.2 SATA SSDs are not supported. Check the interface line in the specification, not just the M.2 label.

Installing without a heatsink

Sony requires a heatsink or another effective heat-dissipation structure. A bare drive is not ready for the expansion bay until a compatible cooler is installed.

Ignoring the assembled thickness

Manufacturers often publish the SSD and heatsink dimensions separately. Add them where appropriate and account for thermal pads, then compare the total with 11.25 mm.

Adding a second heatsink

If the SSD already has a factory heatsink, Sony recommends against placing another heatsink over it. Use one correctly sized cooling solution rather than stacking two.

Assuming the fastest benchmark equals faster games

Quoted read speeds and third-party benchmark results describe the drive or a test setup. They do not guarantee identical loading times on every PS5 game.

Formatting the wrong drive

The PS5 formats the expansion drive during first setup. Confirm that the newly installed SSD is the intended target and that it contains no data you need before accepting the format prompt.

Which one should you choose?

Choose the Samsung 990 Pro with heatsink when you want a high-end drive, prefer the 1TB, 2TB or 4TB capacities, and can confirm the cooler’s dimensions. Its quoted speed and TechRadar’s benchmark make it the speed-focused option, but Sony’s warning means you should not buy it solely for a guaranteed loading-time advantage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the WD_BLACK SN850P when official PS5 licensing and a built-in heatsink matter, or when you need an 8TB expansion. Compare live pricing carefully for the 1TB and 2TB versions, since TechRadar’s guide flags those capacities as potentially poor value at full price.

For either drive, a 2TB capacity is the sensible default for a mixed library. Move to 4TB or 8TB when deleting and redownloading games is a recurring problem, and verify the complete heatsink assembly before placing the order.
