The best SSD for a laptop is the one that matches its interface, physical size, protocol and clearance. A 2.5-inch SATA SSD and an M.2 NVMe SSD are different upgrade paths, and neither fits every laptop. Check the exact model’s service manual before buying. If it confirms an M.2 2280 NVMe slot, the 2TB Samsung 990 EVO Plus is one suitable example. If it has a standard 2.5-inch SATA bay, the Samsung 870 EVO is a separate, compatible type of upgrade. The figures quoted for both drives are manufacturer specifications, not guarantees of performance in your particular laptop.

Start with compatibility, not the advertised speed

Laptop SSD upgrades fail most often because the drive does not match the computer, not because the SSD is too slow. Identify the laptop’s exact model and revision, then use its service manual or manufacturer support page to verify the following before ordering:

  • Whether storage uses a 2.5-inch SATA bay, an M.2 slot, or both.
  • The supported protocol: SATA or NVMe over PCIe.
  • The physical M.2 length, such as 2280, and whether the slot accepts a drive of that length.
  • The maximum supported capacity, if the manufacturer states one.
  • Available vertical clearance for the SSD, including any heatsink, label or retaining bracket.
  • Whether the laptop firmware supports NVMe booting when an NVMe drive is installed.

Samsung’s laptop requirements guidance distinguishes a SATA system with an available SATA connection from an NVMe system with a free M.2 slot, PCIe connectivity and NVMe support in UEFI. An M.2 connector alone is not enough: M.2 describes the shape of the drive, while SATA and NVMe describe how it communicates with the computer.

How to identify the existing drive

Windows Device Manager can reveal the model name, but it may not tell you the physical bay or slot. Look up the model number printed on the laptop’s underside, in the BIOS information screen or in the operating-system system-information panel. The service manual normally shows whether the storage device is a 2.5-inch module, an M.2 card, or a combination of both. If the laptop has an empty slot, verify that it is wired for storage rather than intended only for another component.

Why an M.2 SATA drive is not automatically an NVMe replacement

Some M.2 slots accept SATA drives, some accept NVMe drives, and some accept only one protocol. A notched M.2 card can still be electrically incompatible with the slot. Confirm the protocol stated in the laptop documentation instead of relying on the connector’s appearance or the number of keys in the edge connector.

Choose between the two main laptop upgrade paths

Upgrade path Use it when Example Published specifications
M.2 NVMe The laptop documentation confirms a compatible M.2 2280 NVMe slot, PCIe connectivity and adequate clearance. Samsung 990 EVO Plus 2TB, model MZ-V9S2T0 NVMe 2.0 over PCIe 4.0 x4 or PCIe 5.0 x2; sequential read up to 7,250 MB/s and write up to 6,300 MB/s. Samsung notes that actual performance varies with system hardware and configuration.
2.5-inch SATA The laptop supports a standard 2.5-inch SATA drive bay. Samsung 870 EVO, with capacity selected for the user’s needs Series capacities from 250GB through 4TB; sequential read up to 560 MB/s and write up to 530 MB/s, subject to the SATA interface ceiling.
Higher-capacity 2.5-inch SATA The laptop supports the same 2.5-inch SATA form factor and capacity matters more than peak SATA throughput. Samsung 870 QVO 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB capacities listed in Samsung’s brochure; the same stated SATA speed ceiling of up to 560/530 MB/s sequential read/write.

These are examples for different hardware paths, not a universal ranking. A 990 EVO Plus cannot replace a 2.5-inch SATA drive without a compatible M.2 NVMe slot, and an 870 EVO cannot be installed in an NVMe-only M.2 slot.

When the M.2 NVMe route makes sense

Samsung 990 EVO Plus 2TB

The 2TB Samsung 990 EVO Plus, model MZ-V9S2T0, is an M.2 2280 NVMe 2.0 drive. Samsung lists support for PCIe 4.0 x4 and PCIe 5.0 x2, with sequential read performance up to 7,250 MB/s and sequential write performance up to 6,300 MB/s. Those numbers describe the manufacturer’s specification under its stated conditions; they are not an independent laptop benchmark and should not be treated as the speed every notebook will deliver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A laptop with a PCIe 4.0 connection may not expose the drive’s full specification, and a laptop’s processor, firmware, cooling and power settings can further affect results. The practical reason to choose this route is compatibility with a modern NVMe-capable laptop and the generally higher interface ceiling of PCIe storage, not the assumption that a notebook will reach the headline sequential numbers.

Checks before buying the 990 EVO Plus

  • Confirm that the slot accepts an M.2 2280 card rather than a shorter size.
  • Confirm NVMe support, not merely an M.2 connector.
  • Confirm PCIe connectivity and NVMe boot support in UEFI if the drive will hold the operating system.
  • Measure or verify clearance around the slot. A laptop designed for a bare M.2 card may not have room for an added heatsink.
  • Check the manufacturer’s stated capacity limit and whether a second slot shares lanes or requires a separate mounting screw.

When a 2.5-inch SATA SSD is the correct answer

Samsung 870 EVO

The Samsung 870 EVO is intended for PCs and laptops that support the standard 2.5-inch SATA form factor. Samsung lists capacities of 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, 2TB and 4TB. Its stated sequential limit is up to 560 MB/s for reads and 530 MB/s for writes. Those figures reflect the SATA interface and manufacturer test conditions; they are not directly comparable to an independent test of the 990 EVO Plus in a laptop.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

This path is often the straightforward replacement for a laptop that currently contains a 2.5-inch hard disk or SATA SSD. The drive must still fit the laptop’s bay and mounting arrangement. Some notebooks use a proprietary caddy, cable or bracket, so inspect the service manual before removing the old drive.

Samsung 870 QVO for capacity-first upgrades

Samsung’s brochure lists the 870 QVO in 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB capacities. It uses the same 2.5-inch SATA form factor and has the same published SATA ceiling of up to 560/530 MB/s sequential read/write. Choose it only when the laptop supports that form factor and the larger capacity is the priority. Endurance, warranty terms, current availability and pricing should be checked on the current product documentation before purchase; those details were not established here.

How much SSD capacity should a laptop have?

Capacity should be selected after fit is confirmed. The useful capacity is the space left after the operating system, recovery partition, applications and working files are installed, so do not plan to fill a drive to its last few gigabytes.

250GB to 500GB

These capacities can suit a basic system used for a browser, office applications and a modest local file collection. A 250GB model leaves less room for operating-system updates, temporary files and large applications, so it requires more active storage management.

1TB to 2TB

This range gives a general-purpose laptop room for applications, photographs, project files and offline media without immediately depending on external storage. The 2TB 990 EVO Plus is an example on the NVMe path; 1TB and 2TB options are listed for the SATA families described above.

4TB and 8TB

Large SATA capacities are useful for a laptop that stores substantial media or project data locally. Samsung lists 4TB for the 870 EVO and 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB for the 870 QVO. Confirm that the laptop firmware and operating system can address the intended capacity and that the physical bay can accommodate the selected drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand what the speed numbers do and do not tell you

Sequential read and write figures describe large, contiguous transfers. Starting an application, booting Windows and switching between many small files also depend on random access, queue depth, CPU overhead, thermals and the laptop’s power profile. The quoted 7,250/6,300 MB/s figures for the 990 EVO Plus and 560/530 MB/s figures for the 870 series therefore should be used as interface and product specifications, not as promises of a particular boot time.

A laptop’s PCIe generation and lane configuration matter. The 990 EVO Plus supports PCIe 4.0 x4 or PCIe 5.0 x2, but the host system determines which connection is negotiated. A system with a slower PCIe implementation can still use the drive if the protocol and slot are compatible, while delivering lower throughput. SATA systems remain limited by the SATA interface even when the SSD itself is modern.

Compare candidates on the factors that affect ownership

Once compatibility is established, compare actual candidates using the following checklist:

  • Host support: interface, protocol, M.2 length or 2.5-inch dimensions, capacity limit and boot support.
  • Capacity: select enough headroom for the operating system, applications, updates and working files.
  • Endurance and warranty: read the current manufacturer specifications for total bytes written, warranty length and any warranty conditions. The figures were not provided for the examples above, so they should not be assumed.
  • Thermals: check whether the laptop has airflow or a thermal pad for the slot and whether a drive with an attached heatsink will physically fit.
  • Power behavior: thin laptops may favor a drive with suitable low-power states, especially when battery life matters.
  • Price and availability: verify the current listing, regional warranty and stock at the time of purchase. No current price or inventory comparison is established here.

Prepare before opening the laptop

Back up important files before any hardware work. Samsung’s upgrade guidance describes using Samsung Migration Software to migrate data, replacing the existing drive and rebooting, but the appropriate method depends on your operating system and the laptop’s layout.

  1. Make a separate backup. Copy irreplaceable files to another storage location and confirm that the files can be opened. A clone is not a substitute for a separate backup because a mistake during migration can copy the problem to the new drive.
  2. Record recovery information. Save encryption-recovery keys and confirm that you can sign in to the account used to reactivate the operating system or applications.
  3. Read the exact service manual. Note screw locations, battery-disconnect instructions, cable routing, brackets and any manufacturer warnings.
  4. Confirm the migration plan. Decide whether to clone the old drive or perform a fresh operating-system installation. Cloning preserves the existing environment; a clean installation can remove accumulated software problems but requires reinstalling applications and restoring files.
  5. Prepare matching tools. A USB-to-SATA adapter or external enclosure can help with a 2.5-inch SATA backup or migration when its interface matches the old drive. The adapter must match the drive type; no single adapter works for every SATA and NVMe combination.

Clone the old drive or install the operating system fresh?

Choose cloning when

  • The current installation is stable and configured with applications you need.
  • The destination SSD has enough usable capacity for the source partitions and data.
  • You want to preserve the existing boot configuration and personal settings.

Before cloning, remove unnecessary files and check the source disk for errors. After the clone completes, shut the laptop down fully before replacing the drive. If the source uses encryption, follow the migration software’s instructions and keep the recovery key available.

Choose a clean installation when

  • The old system has persistent corruption, unwanted software or a confusing partition layout.
  • You want to rebuild the laptop with only supported drivers and current applications.
  • The source and destination layouts are difficult to resize safely.

Create installation media using the operating-system vendor’s current instructions, install the new SSD, complete setup and then restore personal files from the separate backup. Keep the old drive untouched until the new installation and file restoration are verified.

General installation procedure

The exact sequence differs by laptop, so the service manual takes priority over this outline. Samsung’s illustrated upgrade guidance shows opening the bottom cover, locating the SSD slot, removing the retaining screw and securing the drive.

  1. Shut down the laptop, disconnect the charger and remove all peripherals.
  2. Follow the service manual to remove the bottom cover. Do not force a panel held by a hidden screw or cable.
  3. Disconnect the internal battery if the manual requires it before touching the storage device.
  4. For a 2.5-inch SATA drive, disconnect the cable, remove the bracket or caddy, transfer any required mounting hardware and reconnect the cable to the replacement SSD.
  5. For an M.2 drive, insert the card at the manufacturer-specified angle, lower it flat and install the retaining screw. Do not bend the card or overtighten the screw.
  6. Check that cables are routed as before and that the drive is not pressing against the cover.
  7. Reconnect the battery, refit the bottom cover and reinstall the screws in their original positions.
  8. Start the laptop and enter firmware setup if necessary to confirm that the new drive is detected.

Verify the upgrade after installation

Detection in firmware is the first checkpoint. If the drive appears there but the operating system does not, the disk may need initialization, partitioning or a drive-letter assignment. If it does not appear in firmware, recheck the protocol, seating, retaining screw, cable and slot support before changing software settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After a clone

Set the new SSD as the first boot device if the firmware did not select it automatically. Confirm that the operating system reports the expected capacity, then open several files, launch essential applications and check that activation and encryption status are normal.

After a clean installation

Install the laptop manufacturer’s chipset, storage and device drivers, apply operating-system updates and confirm that sleep, charging, wireless networking and external displays work. These checks can reveal firmware or driver dependencies that a basic disk-detection test misses.

Troubleshoot the most common failure modes

The M.2 drive is physically the wrong size

A 2280 card is longer than 2230 or 2242 cards. Do not leave a long card unsupported or improvise a mounting point. Return it for the length specified by the laptop documentation.

The laptop has an M.2 slot but does not detect the SSD

Verify that the slot supports NVMe rather than only M.2 SATA, that PCIe connectivity is provided, and that the firmware is updated and configured for NVMe booting when required. Reseat the card and check the retaining screw. If the documentation lists the slot for another device only, it may not support storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 2.5-inch drive does not fit the bay

Check the bay’s cable, caddy and mounting points. A SATA SSD has the standard 2.5-inch form factor, but the laptop may use a proprietary bracket or connector arrangement. Reuse only hardware confirmed for that model.

The laptop detects the SSD but will not boot

Check boot order, UEFI mode, partition style and whether the clone copied the required system and recovery partitions. For a fresh installation, confirm that the installer was started in the firmware mode supported by the laptop.

The new drive runs slower than advertised

Compare the result with the host interface, not just the SSD’s box specification. PCIe generation, available lanes, thermal throttling, power settings and the test’s workload can all reduce performance. The manufacturer explicitly states that 990 EVO Plus performance varies with system hardware and configuration.

A practical buying decision

  1. Find the laptop model and service manual. Do not begin with a product ranking.
  2. Classify the storage path. Select 2.5-inch SATA only for a supported SATA bay; select M.2 NVMe only for a supported NVMe slot.
  3. Confirm physical details. Check M.2 length, mounting screw position, bay hardware and clearance.
  4. Set the capacity. Choose the smallest capacity that leaves comfortable working space, or move to a larger listed capacity when local storage is a priority.
  5. Compare ownership specifications. Review current endurance, warranty, thermals, power behavior, price and regional availability.
  6. Plan migration and recovery. Back up files, save recovery keys and decide between cloning and a clean installation before opening the chassis.

For a confirmed M.2 2280 NVMe laptop, the Samsung 990 EVO Plus 2TB is a technically suitable example with a high published PCIe performance ceiling, subject to the laptop’s own capabilities. For a standard 2.5-inch SATA laptop, the Samsung 870 EVO offers the appropriate form factor in capacities from 250GB to 4TB. When the same SATA form factor must hold more data, the 870 QVO is listed in capacities up to 8TB. None is a universal winner, and current pricing, stock and exact model compatibility must be verified for the individual laptop.
