Pricing uncertainty
Published 2026 roundups do not agree on Squarespace’s current entry price or annual tiers. The conflicting September reports mean an old comparison can be wrong even if it was accurate earlier in the year. Treat any number found in a blog post as a lead, not a quote. Check the checkout screen for your country, billing interval, introductory term and renewal amount.
Need for deeper layout control
Squarespace’s templates make it easy to launch a coherent site, but that consistency can become a constraint when you need unusual breakpoints, custom interactions, highly specific spacing or component-level styling. Webflow and Framer expose more of the design system; WordPress allows code and plugin-level changes when you are prepared to maintain them.

Different business priorities
A brochure site and a product operation should not be evaluated by the same criteria. If checkout reliability, inventory and fulfillment integrations matter most, a commerce-first platform is usually a better fit than a design-first builder. If publishing, memberships or custom data structures matter most, WordPress may justify the extra configuration.
Wix: the easiest all-in-one replacement
Wix is the practical choice for someone who wants managed hosting, a visual editor, templates, forms and basic business features in one dashboard. Its permanent free plan is useful for experimenting, but the included Wix address and advertising make it unsuitable for a polished client-facing launch.

Trade-offs to plan for
The learning curve is steeper than a template-first builder. Class naming, inheritance and breakpoint overrides can create fragile styles when several people edit the project. Webflow site plans and workspace seats are separate purchases, so budget for both if a team needs multiple designers or reviewers. Exporting a site does not reproduce every hosted CMS, form or interaction feature, so document platform dependencies before assuming you can leave later.
Framer: fast, modern and motion-friendly
Framer is aimed at visually led sites where speed of iteration matters. Its free tier lets you prototype on a Framer address, and its editor is approachable for designers who want responsive layouts and animated transitions without assembling a full front-end toolchain.
Choose Framer when
- Your site is primarily a portfolio, launch page, agency presentation or startup marketing experience.
- Motion, transitions and visual polish are more important than complex editorial workflows.
- You want to publish a prototype before committing to a custom domain.
Check before committing
Editor permissions are an additional cost category. One source reports $20 per month for extra editors and $10 for content editors, so verify the role definitions that apply to your workspace. Also check whether a quoted Scale tier is current; older listings still show a $100 monthly plan while newer references say it was removed.

Shopify: when selling matters more than page design
Shopify is the strongest candidate when your website is an operating storefront rather than a small business brochure. Product variants, inventory, checkout, payment settings, shipping rules and order management are central to the platform.
Advantages over a general website builder
- Commerce workflows are designed into the administration area rather than added as an afterthought.
- App integrations cover fulfillment, accounting, marketing and customer support.
- Store themes can be changed without rebuilding product and order data.
Costs beyond the subscription
Budget for payment processing, paid themes, apps and possible migration work. Reported $29 annual-billing and $39 monthly prices were not confirmed against the official pricing page, so do not treat them as a guaranteed quote. Calculate the monthly total using your payment provider, app stack and order volume.
WordPress: maximum extensibility with more responsibility
WordPress.com hosted approach
WordPress.com packages hosting, updates and a managed dashboard. Reported prices range from $4 per month, with Personal at $9 and Commerce at $70, but the source and current inclusions were not confirmed. Verify storage, plugin access, backups, support and commerce features for your country before comparing it with a hosted builder.
WordPress.org self-hosted approach
Self-hosted WordPress gives you control over the server, database, theme and plugins. That flexibility comes with recurring operational work: apply security updates, test plugin compatibility, configure backups, monitor uptime and protect administrator accounts. Hosting and premium extensions make the real cost variable, so a low software price does not mean a low-maintenance site.
When WordPress is worth the effort
- You need custom content types, memberships, multilingual publishing or integrations that a closed builder cannot provide.
- You have someone responsible for updates, security and recovery.
- You want the option to change hosts without rebuilding the entire site in a proprietary editor.

1. Inventory the existing site
Export or record every page, URL, image, downloadable file, form, product, blog post, metadata field, analytics tag and integration. Create a spreadsheet with the current URL, new URL, page type, owner and redirect requirement.
2. Separate portable content from platform features
Text, images and a domain name are generally portable. Layout settings, template blocks, memberships, scheduling data, forms and commerce records may require manual recreation or a specialized export. Identify these dependencies before cancelling the old account.
3. Build the replacement privately
Use a staging address or password protection. Recreate global navigation, typography, accessibility labels, cookie disclosures, forms and transactional emails before pointing the domain to the new site.

Match important slugs where practical. For changed URLs, create one-to-one 301 redirects, preserve canonical tags, regenerate the XML sitemap and verify robots directives. Keep the old site available until crawlers and visitors can reach every important destination.

5. Test real tasks
- Submit every form and confirm delivery to the right inbox.
- Complete a test purchase if the site sells products.
- Check mobile menus, keyboard navigation, focus states and error messages.
- Measure image loading and confirm that analytics events fire once, not twice.
- Open the site on multiple browsers and on a slow mobile connection.
6. Move the domain and monitor
Lower DNS time-to-live before the change when possible, then update the required records at your registrar. Expect propagation differences between networks. Keep redirect logs, monitor 404s and search-console coverage, and postpone cancellation of the old service until traffic and lead flows are stable.
