There is no universal “best” Squad configuration. A reliable community server sets its player cap, tick-rate limit, map layers, mods and restart policy to the hardware, network, current game build and the way its players want to play. The maintainable approach is to separate identity and gameplay behavior in Server.cfg, moderation in Admins.cfg and Bans.cfg, remote administration in Rcon.cfg, licensing in its required configuration, and map flow in the current layer or level rotation files.
This guide gives you a repeatable way to choose those settings, build a population-aware rotation, seed without misleading players, and operate RCON and moderation safely.

What “best settings” means for a Squad community server
Server settings are a set of trade-offs, not a magic preset. A high player cap can create the battles your community wants, but it also raises CPU, memory, network and moderation demand. A high tick-rate limit can improve simulation responsiveness when the host has headroom, yet becomes counterproductive if the process cannot sustain it. Large mod packs and complex layers add another variable.
Start by defining the service you are trying to run:

- Economical &Reusable: Built durable materials with a long-lasting battery, our CAGIWIRU air duster it's a sustainable alternative to disposable air cans.
- Population: Is the server intended for a small regular group, a full-size public battle, or a mixed schedule?
- Experience: Do players expect organized teamwork, relaxed public play, training, or a particular language and region?
- Availability: Will an admin be present during busy hours, and how quickly can someone respond to a crash or disruptive player?
- Change tolerance: Can you test a new game build or mod before putting it into the public rotation?
Use measured host performance and player behavior to adjust the settings. The official material does not publish a universally correct player cap, tick rate, rotation length or seeding threshold, so any article that presents one number as ideal for every server is overstating the evidence.
Keep each configuration concern in the right file
Separating files makes changes auditable and reduces the chance that a moderation or licensing edit is lost during a gameplay change.
| File or configuration area | Use it for | Operational rule |
|---|---|---|
Server.cfg |
Server identity and core behavior | Keep the name, public-facing messages and gameplay-related behavior together; do not use it as a substitute for ban or RCON records. |
Admins.cfg |
Named administrators and their in-game permissions | Maintain a current roster and remove people who no longer administer the community. |
Bans.cfg |
Moderation decisions and ban records | Record enough evidence and context for another admin to understand the decision. |
Rcon.cfg |
Remote administration access | Restrict credentials to trusted staff and review access whenever the roster changes. |
| Licensing configuration | Applying for and retaining a licensed listing | Treat policy compliance and staff coverage as operating requirements, not paperwork. |
| Layer or level rotation files | The ordered sequence of playable map-mode variants | Use only layer names valid for the current build, with exact spelling and case. |
Choose a readable identity and discovery setup
Write a name players can understand
Use a unique, readable server name that tells a new player what community they have joined. Include an experience or language expectation only when it is permitted by the applicable policy. Avoid names that imply an official relationship you do not have, or that hide important restrictions in abbreviations.
Make rules and contact information visible
Put the essential rules, community contact path and any seeding conditions in the MOTD or rotating in-game messages. Players should not have to join an external platform to discover a rule that can result in a kick or ban. Keep the message short enough to be read during connection, then provide the fuller rule set through the community’s normal contact channel.
Understand licensed listing obligations
A licensed listing requires the appropriate Offworld Industries licensing configuration. Retaining that status depends on conduct and policy compliance. The current License Server Policies state that “The license holder is responsible for the behavior of all community members and admins, both on the server and across associated platforms.” Build your staffing and escalation process around that responsibility rather than treating the license as a directory entry.

Set capacity and tick rate from measured headroom
Player cap
Set the maximum players to the highest population your host can sustain while maintaining stable frame, network and query performance under the busiest expected layer and mod combination. Test with the same mods and representative population; an empty-server result is not a capacity test. If the process begins to fall behind, lower the cap before increasing other variables.

Container documentation exposes FIXEDMAXTICKRATE as a control. Treat it as an upper limit, not a promise that the server will achieve that rate. A sustainable lower limit is preferable to a nominally higher value that produces catch-up behavior under load. Record the value you tested, the game build, active mods and peak population so a later change can be compared fairly.
Container and port settings
The same documentation exposes FIXEDMAXPLAYERS together with game, query and RCON ports. Keep those values consistent with the ports published by your host, firewall and server browser. A server that accepts game traffic but has an incorrect query port may be difficult to discover; exposing RCON on an unintended port increases administrative risk.
What to measure before raising limits
- CPU saturation and sustained simulation load during a full round.
- Memory use after the largest map and mod combination has loaded.
- Network throughput, packet loss and latency for the regions you serve.
- Restart time and whether the process returns to the expected rotation.
- Admin workload, including chat incidents, kicks, bans and RCON actions.
Change one limit at a time, observe a busy period, and keep a rollback value. This gives you a useful baseline without pretending that one benchmark applies to every host.
Build a rotation from valid layers, not map names alone
A layer is a specific playable combination of map, game mode and version. “The map” is therefore not enough information: two layers on the same map can have different objectives, team sizes or flow. Build the rotation from the valid layer names shipped with the current game build and preserve their exact spelling and case.

Match modes to population and intent
| Mode | Best use | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| RAAS | Randomized flag progression that gives regular players variety. | Players need to understand that objectives can change; explain the mode in rules or onboarding text. |
| AAS | Fixed objectives and a predictable learning path. | A long fixed sequence can feel repetitive if it dominates the rotation. |
| Invasion | Asymmetric attack-and-defense rounds with a clear narrative. | Balance and population matter; an underpopulated attack can stall quickly. |
| Skirmish | Smaller populations and shorter, more contained engagements. | Do not let a small-population layer surprise players expecting a full-scale battle. |
| Territory Control | Teams competing over territory rather than a single linear objective chain. | Explain the scoring and movement expectations to players unfamiliar with it. |
| Training | Practice, onboarding and controlled instruction. | Use it deliberately; it is not a replacement for a public combat rotation. |
Order layers for a coherent session
Start with layers that fit the population you normally have at that time of day, then move toward more demanding or specialized rounds as the server fills. Mix RAAS, AAS, Invasion, Skirmish and Territory Control rather than creating a random dump of every available layer. Avoid an abrupt jump from a small-population layer to a full-capacity battle; players may leave before the server can recover.
Revalidate after every game update
Layer names can be added, removed or renamed when the game changes. An invalid name may be skipped or fail to load, leaving players with an unexpected sequence. After an update, inspect the current layer list, check spelling and case, and run through the rotation before advertising it as final.
Design a seeding plan that transitions cleanly
Seeding is a low-population rotation intended to help the first players start a session before the main server is full. The canonical guidance supports the pattern but does not define one universal player threshold. Choose a threshold that fits your community, publish it clearly and adjust it from observed behavior.
- Create a reduced seed rotation. Select valid layers and modes that remain playable with the small group you expect at opening time. Keep the list short enough that early players see progress rather than waiting through an unsuitable round.
- State the seed rules in-game. Explain whether players should remain in the server, how admins announce the transition and what behavior is expected while the population is low.
- Assign an admin or scheduled check. Someone must watch the population and move the server to the normal rotation when the community’s operating threshold is reached. An unattended seed plan often leaves a busy server on the wrong kind of layer.
- Switch deliberately. Announce the change through the MOTD or admin message, then load the main rotation according to your documented procedure. Record the transition if your tooling supports an operations log.
- Review the threshold. If players regularly leave during the seed phase, the selected layers or threshold may not fit your audience. Change one factor and observe the next busy period.
Do not advertise a threshold as an official requirement. It is a community operating choice, and the published sources do not establish a universal number.

Maintain a named, covered admin team
Keep the admin roster in Admins.cfg and define who handles routine incidents, appeals and urgent abuse. Offworld Industries’ current policy states a minimum of 10 admins per server, with more required for multiple servers. Treat that as a staffing requirement for a licensed community, not as a suggestion to add inactive names.

Use an evidence-based escalation path
- Ask for the player’s side when the situation is unclear and preserve relevant chat, demo or log evidence.
- Apply the least disruptive action that protects the round, such as a warning or kick, when the evidence does not justify a ban.
- Record the reason, time, administrator and evidence reference in the ban record when a ban is issued.
- Route appeals to an administrator who was not the sole decision-maker when practical.
- Review repeated incidents for a rule or staffing problem instead of treating every case as an isolated event.
Keep Bans.cfg focused on decisions that can be explained later. Do not use a permanent ban as a substitute for a missing rule or an unavailable admin.
Configure RCON with least privilege
Use Rcon.cfg for remote administration and keep it separate from in-game permission records. The cited references identify the file but do not prescribe a particular security product or hardening standard, so apply your organization’s normal access controls.
- Give RCON credentials only to trusted, current administrators.
- Use a different credential for each person or role where the tooling allows it, so access can be revoked without changing every account.
- Limit network exposure to the addresses or management path your staff actually use.
- Never paste credentials into public chat, ticket threads or shared screenshots.
- Review RCON access after an admin leaves and after any suspected compromise.
- Keep RCON actions consistent with the in-game admin roster and ban process; a remote command should still have a documented reason.
Test remote administration during a maintenance window. Confirm that an authorized admin can connect, perform a harmless status action, and disconnect without interrupting a live round.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Stay within licensing and monetization boundaries
Community support can be funded without selling combat power. The current policy allows support-oriented benefits such as whitelist or priority-queue access, influence over map voting, donor recognition, cosmetic-only mod perks and community services. It prohibits donation benefits that change gameplay balance or grant preferred kits, vehicles or other combat advantages.
Make the rules accessible in-game and apply them consistently to donors, regulars and new players. The policy states, “Rules must be accessible to players in-game.” Publish the same eligibility and disciplinary standards on associated community platforms, because the license holder remains responsible for behavior there as well.

Choose self-hosting or a managed host by operational need
A self-hosted machine gives you direct control over configuration files, backups, restart tooling and network placement. It also makes you responsible for hardware failures, patching, firewall rules, monitoring and recovery. A managed Squad-compatible host can reduce that maintenance, but you must verify its current game-build compatibility, geographic locations, resource limits, RCON exposure, backup process, restart controls and total cost before committing.
Recommended Free Tools
| Decision axis | Self-hosted | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Configuration control | Direct access to every supported file and environment setting. | Depends on the provider’s panel, file access and update policy. |
| CPU and network headroom | You select and tune the hardware and connection. | Capacity depends on the plan and how resources are shared. |
| RCON exposure | You design firewall and credential controls. | You must confirm which management path is exposed and how it is protected. |
| Latency | You choose the physical location and transit provider. | You choose among the host’s available regions. |
| Backups and restarts | You build and test them. | They may be included, limited or separately billed; verify the schedule and restore process. |
| Cost | Hardware, bandwidth, power and your maintenance time. | Recurring service fees and any add-ons. |
Use a change-and-update checklist
Before publishing a change, record the game build, active mods, layer list, player cap, tick-rate limit and the person responsible for rollback. Then run this checklist:
- Back up
Server.cfg,Admins.cfg,Bans.cfg,Rcon.cfg, licensing configuration and rotation files. - Validate every layer name against the current build.
- Confirm game, query and RCON ports in the container, host firewall and server listing.
- Start with the seed rotation and verify that the documented transition works.
- Join as a normal player to read the MOTD, rules and contact path.
- Test an authorized RCON connection and an ordinary in-game admin action.
- Observe one busy period before increasing capacity or tick-rate limits.
- Document what changed and retain the previous known-good files.
Common failures and practical fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| A layer is skipped or the server fails to load the next round. | The layer name is invalid, outdated or incorrectly cased. | Compare it with the current build’s valid layer list, correct the spelling and retest the entire sequence. |
| Players can connect but cannot find the server reliably. | Identity, query-port or listing configuration is inconsistent. | Check the readable server name and make the game, query and RCON port settings agree across the container, firewall and listing. |
| Simulation becomes unstable during full rounds. | The player cap, tick-rate limit, mods or layer exceed host headroom. | Capture CPU, memory and network behavior, then lower one limit or remove the heaviest variable and retest. |
| The server remains on seed layers after filling. | No admin or automation is watching the transition. | Assign a named check, publish the threshold and test the handoff during a scheduled opening. |
| An admin can change the server remotely after leaving the team. | RCON credentials were not revoked. | Remove the account or rotate credentials immediately, then audit recent actions and update the roster. |
| Players dispute a ban or donor privilege. | Rules, evidence or monetization boundaries were unclear. | Publish rules in-game, keep an evidence-based record and remove any benefit that affects kits, vehicles or combat balance. |
Three useful starting profiles without invented numbers
| Profile | Configuration approach | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Small community | Set a conservative cap and tick-rate limit, favor Skirmish and other layers that remain enjoyable with fewer players, and keep the seed-to-main transition simple. | Your regular population is modest or your host has limited headroom. |
| Public mixed-population server | Use a broad RAAS/AAS/Invasion mix, place smaller-population layers near the opening of the rotation, and monitor busy-hour performance before raising limits. | You want new players and regulars to share one predictable service. |
| Organized large battles | Use the largest cap and tick-rate limit your measured host can sustain, add clear admin coverage, and test every demanding layer and mod combination before promotion. | Your community can fill the server and provide continuous moderation. |
These profiles describe decision logic rather than universal values. Set the actual limits from your own measurements and change them when the game build, mods, hardware or community goals change.
The Bottom Line
The best Squad community-server setup is the one you can operate consistently: separate configuration files, measured capacity limits, a validated and population-aware layer rotation, an explicit seeding handoff, accountable moderation and tightly controlled RCON. Start conservatively, document every change and let real busy-hour behavior—not a copied number—determine the next adjustment.
