Door Kickers is the closest match for players who want to direct a small squad in real time, with a pause button for planning routes, equipment and breaches. XCOM 2 Collection is the strongest turn-based campaign choice, including War of the Chosen and four DLC packs. Into the Breach offers compact, puzzle-like turns, while Warhammer 40,000: Tacticus suits players who prefer a free-to-play collection game with PvE and competitive modes.
There is no objective universal winner here. These games use different scales, timing systems and payment models, so the right pick depends on whether you want a realistic SWAT operation, a long science-fiction campaign, a tightly bounded tactical puzzle or a constantly expanding roster. The first two are the clearest matches for the phrase “squad-based tactical game.” The latter pair are broader recommendations: one is a puzzle exercise in prediction, and the other is a live-service collection game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

In a strict small-unit interpretation, you directly position several named or individually controllable soldiers, decide who moves first, and solve threats through coordinated actions. Door Kickers follows that model most literally: you lay out paths and breach points for a SWAT team, then intervene during execution.

XCOM 2 uses a larger campaign frame. Individual soldiers still matter in each battle, but research, recruitment, strategic travel and the consequences of injuries shape the whole run. Into the Breach reduces the scale further: its units function as pieces in a deterministic puzzle, and the challenge comes from preventing future damage rather than simulating a firefight. Tacticus emphasizes roster development and repeated battles, making collection and mode variety as important as one mission’s positioning.
Before choosing, decide which of these dimensions matters most:
- Timing: Do you want to pause a live plan, or take turns with no execution clock?
- Scale: Is your ideal session one building, a campaign map and army, or a compact board?

The Google Play description frames the game as a SWAT intervention in which you analyze the situation, plan team routes, choose equipment and breach points, and coordinate multiple troopers before suspects can trigger a threat. The mission generator matters if you want replayable layouts after completing authored scenarios. It does not turn the game into an open-ended campaign: the evidence supports generated missions and the listed campaigns, but not a guaranteed campaign length beyond those published counts.
Controls, offline use and fit
The Play listing describes controls designed for touch and says the game works offline. That makes it the most straightforward recommendation for playing without a connection, although you should still install and launch it once while online so Google Play can complete licensing and asset setup. Offline behavior can also be affected by a future app or operating-system change, so treat the current listing as the authority.
Choose Door Kickers if you want to think in routes, angles, doors and synchronized entries. It is less suitable if you want character-driven progression, a strategic world map or a competitive roster economy. The official page for Door Kickers 2 – Task Force North describes a separate top-down real-time tactics game with pause-at-will, more than 90 handcrafted missions and online co-op for up to four players, but that page does not establish Android support; do not assume the sequel is available on your phone.
XCOM 2 Collection: the turn-based campaign pick
What the Android package includes
Feral Interactive’s September 8, 2026 announcement says the Android collection combines the acclaimed War of the Chosen expansion and four DLC packs in one package. That is substantially more than a single skirmish mode: you receive a campaign framework in which battlefield decisions, soldier development and strategic choices interact over time.
The turn structure gives you time to inspect cover, movement range and available abilities before committing. The campaign layer then asks you to balance immediate mission needs against longer-term research, staffing and recovery. Losing or injuring a soldier can affect later operations, so the game rewards conservative planning as well as aggressive tactical play.

Touch interface and purchasing model
Feral says it redesigned the interfaces and controls for touchscreen play and performed extensive optimization. Those are publisher claims, not independent frame-rate or battery tests; actual smoothness depends on your device, Android version and thermal conditions. Feral also states that the collection has no in-app purchases.
The announcement’s price conflicts with a later August 2026 Android guide, so quoting either figure would risk misleading readers in another country or at another time. Open the current Google Play page from your device to see the price, supported hardware and any local sale. A listing can be visible in one country or on one model while unavailable in another.
Who should choose it
Pick XCOM 2 Collection when you want a campaign you can return to for many sessions and enjoy the tension of permanent consequences. It is a weaker fit for a quick, self-contained operation or for players who dislike managing a wider strategic layer. Unlike Door Kickers, the reviewed official material does not establish offline play, so do not select it solely for no-connection gaming.
Into the Breach: compact tactics as a logic puzzle
Into the Breach is best understood as a deterministic tactical puzzle rather than a realistic infantry simulator. Battles take place on a compact board, and enemy intentions are visible before you commit. Your task is to move a small team so that attacks are redirected, blocked or neutralized while protecting the structures that matter.
That design makes every turn information-dense. A move can push an enemy away from a building, shield a civilian objective or set up a better response next turn. Because the board is small and outcomes are legible, the game rewards sequencing and spatial reasoning more than reflexes or equipment shopping.

A secondary Android guide describes the game as available through a Netflix plan. Subscription catalogs, regional rights and plan requirements can change, so verify the current Google Play listing and the terms shown in your own account before treating that access route as guaranteed. The reviewed sources do not establish a standalone purchase price or universal offline policy.
Choose Into the Breach if you want short sessions in which you can study a problem, restart and try a cleaner solution. Choose one of the other recommendations if your priority is realistic room clearing, a persistent soldier campaign or a long-term collectible roster.
Warhammer 40,000: Tacticus: free-to-play roster tactics
Tacticus uses grid-based battles in the Warhammer 40,000 setting and is aimed at players who enjoy assembling a varied group of units over time. The tactical question is not only where to move a squad this turn; it is also which units to develop and which modes to pursue. That makes roster planning and repeat play central to the experience.
A secondary Android guide characterizes the game as free to play with ads and in-app purchases, while another editorial selection includes it among Android turn-based games. Those descriptions should be treated as current-at-the-time guidance rather than a permanent promise: monetization, offers and mode availability can be changed by the publisher. Check the local Play listing for the present model and disable or protect purchases if the device is shared with children.
Tacticus is the right choice when collecting and upgrading a broad range of units is part of the fun, and when you want both player-versus-environment and competitive activities. It is not the cleanest fit for someone specifically asking for a premium, realistic small-team campaign with no recurring economy.

Reading a product count as a performance guarantee
The 80 missions, six campaigns, generated missions and more than 65 items listed for Door Kickers describe the product’s advertised content. They do not measure difficulty, replay value, frame rate or battery use. No independent test in the reviewed material establishes crash rates, storage consumption or universal performance for any title.

Expecting a fixed price or permanent catalog access
Store prices, subscription catalogs, advertising and in-app purchase terms can change. The conflicting XCOM 2 figures are a concrete warning not to copy a dated number into a purchase guide. Verify the transaction screen and, for subscription access, the plan’s current catalog before paying.
Confusing a publisher page with Android confirmation
