The best Windows 11 alternative to Spotlight depends on what you want to replace. Choose Slideshow for your own rotating folder, Picture for one fixed image, Bing Wallpaper for a Microsoft-curated image that changes daily, and Themes when you want colors and sounds to change with the background. Configure the lock screen separately: it has its own Picture, Slideshow, and Spotlight controls.
Choose by the experience you want
“Spotlight alternative” can mean several different things in Windows 11. Spotlight supplies automatically changing Microsoft imagery and may add tips or notifications, but you might instead want ownership of the image files, a predictable static background, a daily editorial image, or a complete visual theme. The table below maps each goal to the setting that actually provides it.

Desktop and lock-screen choices are independent. Changing the desktop to Slideshow does not automatically alter the lock screen, and selecting Spotlight for the lock screen does not force Spotlight on the desktop.

Slideshow is the strongest choice when “alternative” means rotating your own images. Windows watches a folder and changes the desktop background at an interval you set. You retain control of the files, can use an existing photo or art library, and can decide whether the order is predictable or shuffled.

Set up a desktop slideshow
- Open Start > Settings > Personalization > Background.
- Open the background-type menu and select Slideshow.
- Select Browse (or the folder-selection control) and choose the folder containing the images you want Windows to use.
- Set Change picture every to the interval you prefer.
- Turn Shuffle on if you want Windows to vary the order rather than follow the folder sequence.
- Choose a fit mode: Fill, Fit, Stretch, Tile, Center, or Span.
To move to another image immediately, right-click an empty area of the desktop and select Next desktop background. This is useful when the scheduled interval is long or when you want to skip an image without changing the folder.
Pick the right fit mode
- Fill enlarges the image to cover the screen and may crop edges.
- Fit shows the complete image and may leave bands where the aspect ratio differs.
- Stretch fills the screen but can distort proportions.
- Tile repeats a smaller image across the desktop.
- Center leaves the image at its original size and places it in the middle.
- Span spreads one image across multiple displays.
Microsoft documents Slideshow as a desktop-background mode, not as a universal wallpaper service for every virtual workspace. Its support documentation says desktop-background Slideshow is not supported when multiple desktops are being used. If separate virtual desktops are central to your workflow, test the behavior on your current Windows 11 build before reorganizing your image collection around it.
When Slideshow is preferable to Spotlight
Use Slideshow when the image source matters more than editorial discovery. A family-photo folder, a design reference set, or a curated collection stays under your control. You can remove an image simply by removing it from the selected folder, and you are not dependent on a daily online feed. The trade-off is that you must supply, organize, and occasionally refresh the collection yourself.

2. Picture: one stable desktop image
Select Picture when you want the desktop to remain visually consistent. This mode lets you choose a built-in Windows image or a local file without introducing automatic rotation, tips, or notifications.
Set a fixed desktop picture
- Go to Start > Settings > Personalization > Background.
- Set Personalize your background to Picture.
- Choose one of the displayed images, or select Browse to locate a file on your PC.
- Set the fit option that best matches your display: Fill, Fit, Stretch, Tile, Center, or Span.
Picture is a practical replacement when you need a known background for screen sharing, signage, demonstrations, or a work environment where movement is distracting. It also avoids the maintenance of a slideshow: there is no interval to tune and no folder whose contents can unexpectedly change.

3. Solid color: the simplest non-Spotlight desktop
Solid color removes imagery entirely. In Settings > Personalization > Background, choose Solid color and select a color from Windows’ palette. This is useful when icons must remain easy to read, when a photo background competes with a presentation, or when you want the least visual activity possible. It changes only the desktop background; it does not alter the lock screen, window colors, sounds, or other theme components.
4. Bing Wallpaper: a daily Microsoft-curated image
Bing Wallpaper is Microsoft’s separate app for placing the Bing image of the day on the Windows desktop. Microsoft describes a daily image, a short description, the ability to browse imagery, and information about where the images come from. The product page states that the app supports Windows 7 and later, which includes Windows 11.

This is the closest match for readers who like Spotlight’s sense of discovery but do not want to maintain a local folder. The source remains Microsoft’s daily Bing selection rather than your own files. It is not the same control as the built-in Windows Spotlight choice in the Personalization settings, and it should not be assumed to control the lock screen.
Installation and verification
- Use Microsoft’s current Bing Wallpaper product page and download the Windows installer.
- Read the installer screens before accepting them; Microsoft notes that installation may provide in-app promotional notifications.
- After installation, check the app’s current options for changing or browsing the daily image.
- If the desktop does not update, verify that the app is running and that Windows has not blocked it from starting.
Download links and installer prompts can change, so confirm the current Microsoft page and wording at the time you install. The app’s daily schedule, browsing controls, and notification behavior should be judged by the version offered to you, not by an old screenshot.
Who should choose Bing Wallpaper
Choose it when you want a hands-off stream of professionally selected images and are comfortable with Microsoft choosing the content. Choose Slideshow instead if you require an offline collection, a fixed rotation interval, or complete control over every image. Choose Picture if even a daily change is too unpredictable.

5. Themes: change more than the wallpaper
A Windows theme is a package rather than a single background. Microsoft describes themes as combinations of desktop backgrounds, window colors, sounds, and other personalization elements. This makes Themes the right alternative when Spotlight’s narrow image change is not enough and you want the whole desktop to feel different.
Apply or browse a theme
- Open Start > Settings > Personalization > Themes.
- Select one of the available themes to apply it.
- To find more choices, use the option to browse themes in the Microsoft Store.
- After applying a theme, review the resulting background, colors, and sounds and adjust individual settings if needed.
Save and share a custom theme
Once you have arranged the background and other appearance settings, Windows lets you save the combination as a theme. Microsoft also documents exporting a theme as a .deskthemepack file for sharing. The file packages the theme configuration and associated resources; the recipient may still need access to any referenced content that is not included or available on their device.
Use Themes when consistency across several appearance settings matters. If you only need a rotating desktop and do not want colors or sounds to change, Slideshow is more precise.
6. Keep the lock screen separate
The lock screen has its own controls at Start > Settings > Personalization > Lock screen. Microsoft documents three choices there: Windows Spotlight, Picture, and Slideshow. You can therefore use a static or personal desktop while retaining a rotating Spotlight lock screen—or make both screens use your own imagery.
Lock-screen Picture
Select Picture and choose one built-in or local image. This is the lock-screen equivalent of a fixed desktop picture, but it does not change the desktop setting.

Lock-screen Slideshow
Select Slideshow and choose one or more folders. Microsoft’s lock-screen controls support multiple folders and additional slideshow settings. Use this when you want personal images at sign-in without changing the desktop’s background behavior.
Lock-screen Spotlight
Select Windows Spotlight to let Microsoft rotate lock-screen images. Microsoft says this mode can also show tips, tricks, and notifications. Those extras are part of the lock-screen experience; selecting a desktop Picture or Slideshow does not remove them while Spotlight remains selected here.
7. Dynamic Theme: a lead, not a verified recommendation
Dynamic Theme is mentioned in Windows user discussions as a possible alternative for automatically changing images. However, those discussions are anecdotal and do not establish the app’s current availability, maintenance status, feature set, privacy terms, or compatibility with your Windows 11 build. Treat it as a discovery lead only.
If you investigate it, verify that it is available through a current, trustworthy distribution channel, inspect its permissions and update history, and confirm whether it changes the desktop, lock screen, or both. Do not assume that a feature described in an older discussion still exists. For a supported, documented baseline, use Windows’ built-in modes or Microsoft’s Bing Wallpaper app instead.

Microsoft Learn’s “Configure Windows spotlight” guidance, updated February 20, 2026, describes organizational controls such as configuration service provider (CSP) and Group Policy settings. In that policy context, the page discusses Windows Spotlight for Enterprise and Education editions. That wording should not be expanded into a blanket statement that Spotlight is unavailable on consumer editions: Microsoft’s ordinary support documentation presents Spotlight as a desktop and lock-screen personalization option.

On a managed PC, an administrator can restrict or prescribe personalization settings. If a choice is missing, reverts after you select it, or is disabled in Settings, check whether the device is managed before troubleshooting the image files or app installation.
9. Troubleshoot the common failure points
The background does not change
- For Slideshow, return to Settings > Personalization > Background and confirm that Slideshow is still selected and that the chosen folder contains supported image files.
- Check the interval; a long interval can look like a failure if you are waiting only a few minutes.
- Use Next desktop background from the desktop context menu to determine whether manual advancement works.
- For Bing Wallpaper, verify that the app is installed, running, and not blocked from starting by your organization.
The image is cropped, stretched, or surrounded by empty space
Change the fit setting between Fill, Fit, Stretch, Tile, Center, and Span. Fill commonly crops edges, while Fit can leave bands when the image and display have different aspect ratios. Span is intended for a single image spread across multiple displays.
The lock screen changed but the desktop did not
That is expected when the two areas use different settings. Check both Personalization > Background and Personalization > Lock screen; each has its own mode selector.
A work PC will not keep your selection
Look for organization policies before reinstalling anything. Managed Windows devices can receive Spotlight and personalization rules through CSP or Group Policy, and those rules can override a user’s choice.
10. A practical decision guide
- Choose Slideshow if you have a folder of images and want interval, shuffle, fit, and manual “next” controls.
- Choose Picture if you need one stable image with no automatic changes.
- Choose Solid color if readability and minimal distraction matter more than imagery.
- Choose Bing Wallpaper if you want Microsoft to supply a new Bing image each day and you accept the app’s current installation and notification experience.
- Choose Themes if the goal is a coordinated change to backgrounds, window colors, sounds, and related appearance settings.
- Configure the lock screen separately whenever your requirement concerns the sign-in screen rather than the desktop.
- Approach Dynamic Theme cautiously because current features and availability are not established by authoritative documentation here.
For most Windows 11 users, Slideshow is the best all-purpose Spotlight replacement because it offers automation without surrendering control of the image source. Bing Wallpaper is the better fit for a daily curated experience, while Picture or Solid color is preferable when consistency is the priority.
