For most listeners, Qobuz is the strongest Spotify alternative for hi-res FLAC and permanent downloads, while TIDAL is the best all-round choice for 24-bit/192 kHz streaming, Dolby Atmos, offline listening and playlist importing. Apple Music makes the most sense for people invested in Apple devices and family sharing. Spotify itself is no longer automatically disqualified: Premium lossless began rolling out in 2025 and now reaches more than 50 markets.
The right choice depends on more than the word “lossless.” Maximum resolution, catalog depth, recommendations, device support, immersive audio, downloads, family plans and the way you move existing playlists can matter more than a higher sample-rate number that your equipment cannot reproduce.

Lossless audio removes the data discarded by a lossy codec, allowing playback to reproduce the encoded source without that compression step. A service may still use different masters, volume levels or edits, so two lossless versions are not guaranteed to sound identical.

Sample rate describes how many times per second the waveform is measured; bit depth describes the resolution of each measurement. CD-quality FLAC is commonly represented as 16-bit/44.1 kHz. Hi-res services can go higher, but you only benefit when the recording, application, connection and playback chain all support the format.
Bluetooth normally compresses audio before it reaches wireless headphones. For critical listening, use a wired connection or a network/Wi‑Fi path to compatible speakers. TIDAL recommends a DAC capable of lossless 24-bit/192 kHz for its highest tier; Spotify similarly recommends wired headphones or speakers and Wi‑Fi for the smoothest lossless playback.
TIDAL: the most complete hi-res streaming package
TIDAL divides its relevant quality levels into High and Max. High reaches 16-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC. Max can reach 24-bit/192 kHz HiRes FLAC. TIDAL describes a source hierarchy in which HiRes FLAC is preferred, followed by FLAC and then AAC when a higher-quality source is unavailable. That means “Max” is a ceiling, not a promise that every song is available at 24/192.

When TIDAL is the better fit
- You want the highest published streaming ceiling in this group: 24-bit/192 kHz HiRes FLAC.
- You want Dolby Atmos alongside conventional stereo lossless playback.
- You need offline listening and an advertised way to import existing playlists.
- You use a DAC, streamer or powered speakers that can accept high-resolution PCM.
TIDAL limitations to understand
- A supported track, plan, device and network path are all required; a Max subscription does not make every title HiRes FLAC.
- Bluetooth can become the limiting link even when the source is lossless.
- TIDAL does not state a permanent-download store in the cited product information, so canceling the subscription does not give you purchased albums to keep.
Qobuz: best for hi-res listening plus permanent purchases
Qobuz combines streaming with a download store. Its current product page advertises more than 100 million tracks, 24-bit hi-res streaming in all applications, human-written recommendations and reviews, and album purchases that remain available in lossless CD or hi-res formats. This ownership option is the clearest distinction from services presented only as subscriptions.
The opened U.S. listing shows $12.99 per month or $129.99 for 12 months, which works out to about $10.83 per month when the annual payment is spread across a year. The annual amount is a one-time payment, not a monthly billing promise. Availability and pricing differ outside the United States.
Why choose Qobuz
- You care about hi-res catalog depth more than immersive formats.
- You prefer human-written reviews and recommendations instead of relying solely on algorithmic mixes.
- You want to buy selected albums permanently at CD lossless or hi-res quality.
- You listen on multiple supported applications and want the same hi-res emphasis across them.
Trade-offs
Qobuz’s cited page does not establish a comparable, independently audited catalog-overlap percentage against Spotify or TIDAL. A larger stated track count therefore should not be read as proof that every artist or edition you want is present. Search for your essential albums before switching, particularly if you listen to regional releases, live versions or niche classical recordings.
Apple Music: strongest ecosystem and Spatial Audio option
Apple Music advertises lossless audio, Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos, ad-free listening, personalized recommendations, artist interviews and performances, collaborative playlists and family sharing for up to five people. Apple describes lossless as preserving every detail of the original recording. The cited product page emphasizes trials and plan types but does not display a current monthly price, so do not rely on an old price copied from another market.
Apple Music is a practical choice when your household already uses Apple devices, when collaborative playlists are important, or when you want Dolby Atmos releases integrated into the same catalog and player. Its value is less about winning a resolution contest and more about combining audio formats with a mature device ecosystem and family access.

Check before moving
- Confirm that your phone, computer, receiver or smart speaker supports the lossless and Dolby Atmos modes you intend to use.
- Check storage settings before enabling offline lossless downloads; higher-quality files consume more space than compressed streams.
- Verify the current plan price and trial terms in your country, because the cited page does not provide a universal monthly figure.
Spotify in 2026: staying may now be rational
Spotify Premium began rolling out lossless on September 10, 2025. Spotify says Premium tracks can stream in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC, with support across mobile, desktop, tablet and many Spotify Connect devices. An October 6, 2025 update said the feature was available to Premium users in more than 50 markets.
The rollout is especially important for people who already rely on Spotify’s playlists, recommendations and social features. If your priority is simply replacing lossy playback with lossless while keeping your existing workflow, first open the audio-quality settings in your Premium account and confirm that lossless is enabled in your market and on your device.
Spotify recommends Wi‑Fi and wired headphones or speakers for the smoothest experience and notes that Bluetooth compresses the signal. Its maximum published resolution is lower than TIDAL’s 24/192 ceiling, but that difference may be inaudible or irrelevant if your headphones, DAC or listening environment cannot resolve it.
Amazon Music: an ecosystem choice that needs verification
Amazon’s current homepage confirms free music and podcast listening, artist and album discovery, playlists and a broad catalog. The cited page does not expose a current lossless-format specification or subscription price. Because of that evidence gap, Amazon Music should not be selected on an assumed bit depth, sample rate or plan cost.
It can still be sensible in an Amazon, Prime or Alexa household if the service shown in your account meets your quality requirements. Before paying, open the local plan page and verify the exact lossless or hi-res label, supported devices, offline rights, family terms and trial conditions.

How the services differ on the decisions that matter
| Decision | Most useful choice | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Highest stated streaming resolution | TIDAL Max, up to 24-bit/192 kHz HiRes FLAC | Whether a specific release is actually HiRes FLAC and whether your DAC supports it |
| Permanent album ownership | Qobuz | Download format, store availability and whether the edition you want is sold |
| Immersive audio | TIDAL or Apple Music | Dolby Atmos availability for the album and compatibility of your playback device |
| Existing Spotify workflow | Stay with Spotify Premium if lossless is enabled in your market | Rollout status, supported Spotify Connect hardware and wired/Wi‑Fi playback |
| Playlist transfer | TIDAL advertises playlist importing | Which source services, duplicate handling and missing-track behavior are supported at the time you transfer |
| Editorial discovery | Qobuz for human-written recommendations; Spotify, TIDAL and Apple Music for personalized discovery | Whether your preferred artists and genres are well represented in the service’s recommendations |
| Family listening | TIDAL, Apple Music and other services with region-specific family plans | Number of members, household rules, student eligibility and local pricing |
No universal country-by-country price table or independently audited catalog-overlap statistic is established here. Treat any comparison claiming that one service has “everything” as a marketing simplification.
Hardware and network setup for genuine lossless playback
- Confirm the source setting. Select the lossless or highest-quality option in the service’s audio settings. On Spotify, confirm that Premium lossless is available for your account and market.
- Use a suitable connection. Connect wired headphones, an amplifier or active speakers directly, or use Wi‑Fi/network playback to a compatible device. Avoid Bluetooth when your goal is an uncompressed path from the service.
- Check the DAC ceiling. For TIDAL Max, TIDAL recommends a DAC that supports lossless 24-bit/192 kHz. A lower-capability DAC can still play music, but it cannot reproduce the full published ceiling.
- Check the whole chain. The phone or computer, application, operating-system mixer, DAC, amplifier and headphones all affect the result. One component that resamples or compresses audio becomes the practical limit.
- Allow enough bandwidth and storage. Lossless streams use more data than compressed audio, while offline downloads occupy more storage. Wi‑Fi is preferable for long listening sessions and large downloads.
- Test with a familiar recording. Compare at matched volume and use the same master where possible. A louder version often seems better even when it is not more detailed.
How to switch without losing your playlists
Playlist migration is a metadata problem, not a perfect copy operation. Track names, regional availability, deluxe editions, remixes and explicit-content settings can differ between catalogs.
- Make an inventory. Record your essential playlists, saved albums, followed artists and downloaded files. Mark playlists that contain local files or podcasts, since those may not transfer as ordinary catalog tracks.
- Check the destination’s import feature. TIDAL explicitly lists playlist importing. Review the supported source services and the transfer report before deleting anything from your old account.
- Audit the result. Look for unmatched songs, wrong versions, duplicate tracks and censored replacements. Rebuild high-value playlists manually when an exact match is unavailable.
- Keep the old service during the trial period. Do not cancel until your must-have albums, playlists and device integrations work on the new platform.
- Recreate downloads. Offline files are generally tied to the destination service’s application; they are not portable audio files. If you want files you own, Qobuz’s purchase store is the option in this comparison that explicitly provides permanent downloads.
Common problems and fixes
“I selected lossless, but it still sounds compressed.”
Check whether Bluetooth is active, whether the track has a lossless source, and whether your operating system or DAC is resampling. Switch to a wired or Wi‑Fi path and compare a known lossless release at matched volume.
“My service says HiRes, but my device shows a lower rate.”
The app may be selecting a lower-quality source because of the track, connection, plan, device or output setting. Confirm the release’s quality label and the DAC’s supported input. TIDAL’s source hierarchy can fall back from HiRes FLAC to FLAC or AAC when a higher-quality source is unavailable.
Recommended Free Tools
“The lossless option is missing.”
Availability can be country-, plan- and rollout-dependent. Spotify’s lossless feature reached more than 50 markets by October 6, 2025 but is not necessarily enabled everywhere. Update the application, verify your Premium status and check the local account page.
“My transferred playlist is incomplete.”
Search for alternate album editions, remasters and regional versions. Preserve the original playlist until you have checked every unmatched item; no catalog service guarantees a one-to-one match for every track.
Quick Recap
Bottom-line recommendations
- Pick TIDAL for the strongest single package of 24/192 HiRes FLAC, Dolby Atmos, offline listening, DJ features and advertised playlist importing.
- Pick Qobuz if human curation, a 100-million-plus-track hi-res catalog and permanent album purchases matter more than immersive audio.
- Pick Apple Music if you live in the Apple ecosystem, share with a family of up to five people, or specifically want Spatial Audio and collaborative playlists.
- Stay with Spotify if lossless is available in your market and your existing discovery system and playlists are more valuable than a higher theoretical sample rate.
- Consider Amazon Music only after checking the current local lossless specification, price and device support rather than assuming them.
