Waze is the best first choice if you want a speed readout that stays visible on your Android Auto screen. It shows your current speed in a persistent panel and turns the readout red when you exceed the detected limit. Choose Sygic GPS Navigation when the largest speed-and-limit panel matters most, HERE WeGo for free offline maps, TomTom AmiGO for speed-camera alerts, or a dedicated speedometer app when another device is handling navigation.
Google Maps is not a dependable answer for every driver yet. A limited 2026 rollout exposed a speedometer to some Android Auto beta users, but later reports described the control disappearing intermittently. Availability depends on the Google Maps version, beta status, phone, vehicle and region, so an app with an established Android Auto interface is the more predictable solution.

Android Auto is not a general-purpose phone screen mirrored into the dashboard. Google says compatible apps are offered through its Android Auto app catalog, and apps intended for the in-car display must pass an approval process. Developers use safety-approved templates that restrict the controls and information shown while driving.

Google’s Android Auto help describes voice-guided navigation, estimated arrival times, live traffic information and lane guidance through Google Maps or another supported navigation app. A speedometer app therefore has to expose its information through an approved Android Auto experience; an ordinary phone app cannot simply draw an unrestricted dashboard window.
That approval requirement explains why a speedometer can be excellent on a phone yet absent from the car screen. Check the app’s store listing for Android Auto support, install it on the same phone that connects to the vehicle, and look for it in the Android Auto launcher. If it is not listed there, a phone-only interface will not become an in-dash display merely because the phone is connected.
Best apps by use case
Waze: best overall for a persistent speed readout
Waze is the closest replacement for the experience many drivers expect from Google Maps. In the 2026 comparison, its Android Auto interface kept a permanent speed pill on the screen and changed the pill to red when the detected speed exceeded the limit. That is the clearest match for the question, “Which app always shows my speed while I navigate?”

It is also a full navigation app rather than a floating gauge. You get route guidance, traffic-aware routing and the usual map context in the same display. Waze is free, but the comparison identifies advertising on the map and heavier telemetry as trade-offs. If minimizing data collection or visual clutter is more important than live routing, one of the dedicated speedometer apps may suit you better.
Sygic GPS Navigation: largest speed and limit panel
Sygic is the choice when the speed information itself should be difficult to miss. Its reported Android Auto layout uses a dedicated head-up-display-style panel containing current speed, the speed limit and the next turn. It also uses TomTom road data and supports offline country maps.
The full driving feature set is subscription-gated. The comparison reported premium at about $2 per month when billed annually; that is a recurring price indication from the 2026 comparison, not a guaranteed current offer. Check the price and the features included in your country before subscribing. Sygic is most compelling for a driver who wants a large, structured panel and offline navigation in one app.

HERE WeGo: free offline maps
HERE WeGo combines a current-speed display and posted-limit information with downloadable maps covering an entire country. The comparison reported no paid tier, making it the strongest fit when you want to avoid a navigation subscription and still prepare for areas with weak or absent mobile data.

Offline maps do not guarantee every live service. The comparison cautions that traffic coverage is thinner in smaller markets, so a route can remain available while real-time congestion information is less complete than in a connected navigation app. Download the relevant country map before leaving coverage and confirm that the Android Auto version shows the speed panel you expect.
TomTom AmiGO: camera-alert specialist
TomTom AmiGO emphasizes warnings rather than a large speed display. Its reported Android Auto interface shows live speed in a compact HUD and alerts for fixed and mobile speed cameras. That combination is useful for a driver who already has a preferred navigation style but wants an additional warning layer.
Camera-alert rules differ by jurisdiction. Some places restrict the use of camera-warning services, and coverage can vary by road and country. Check local law and the app’s current coverage before enabling alerts; do not treat an alert as permission to exceed a posted limit.
HUDWAY Go: reflected windshield display
HUDWAY Go takes a different approach: it mirrors a speedometer onto the windshield when the phone is placed in a reflective phone mount. The result is a heads-up-style image that can be read without looking down at the dashboard screen. The comparison reported that the full HUD and speed alerts cost around $30 per year.

Speedometer GPS Pro: speed-only screen
Speedometer GPS Pro is appropriate when another device or the vehicle’s built-in system is already providing navigation. The reported Android Auto view is a full-screen current-speed number, supplemented by maximum speed, average speed, distance and elapsed time.
It deliberately omits map, lane guidance and camera alerts. That narrow scope can be an advantage: there are fewer moving elements to interpret. It is not the right choice if you need the app to tell you the legal limit or reroute around traffic.
GPS Speed Pro: minimal widget
GPS Speed Pro places speed, heading and a small compass in an Android Auto widget layout. It does not provide a route or speed-limit awareness. Choose it when you want a compact glance at motion and direction while a separate navigation system handles every route decision.
Because it has no posted-limit context, the number should not be interpreted as a compliance warning. Continue to read the vehicle’s signs and follow the limit shown by reliable road signage.
MapFactor Navigator 7: offline Android Auto navigation
MapFactor’s Navigator 7 announcement says the app is fully compatible with Android Auto and can provide offline voice turn-by-turn guidance without an internet connection. It also lists lane assistance, traffic, alternative routes and day/night modes.
Navigator 7 is therefore the strongest researched option when the primary problem is losing navigation service offline. Its announcement does not establish that it provides the same persistent, prominent speed panel as Waze or Sygic, so select it for offline routing first and verify the exact speed information shown in your vehicle.

How to choose the right app
Choose by the information you need at a glance
- Only current speed: Speedometer GPS Pro gives the largest number; GPS Speed Pro is less intrusive.
- Current speed plus a limit: Waze, Sygic and HERE WeGo report both in their Android Auto interfaces.
- Camera warnings: TomTom AmiGO is the specialized option, subject to local law and coverage.
- Speed projected toward the windshield: HUDWAY Go requires a reflective phone mount and favorable lighting.
- Offline route guidance: HERE WeGo, Sygic and MapFactor Navigator 7 have the clearest offline-map or offline-guidance descriptions.
Balance navigation quality and distraction
A persistent speed pill is useful only if it does not compete with the route. Navigation apps place speed information inside a safety-approved template, while phone-only gauges can tempt you to interact with the handset. Set the route before moving, use voice commands where available, and avoid changing destinations or settings while driving.
If a large panel makes the map difficult to read, use the smallest widget that answers your question. Conversely, if you repeatedly miss a small number, Sygic’s larger panel or Waze’s persistent pill may reduce the need to search the screen.
Install and check a speedometer app in Android Auto
- Install the app on the connecting phone. Use the official app store listing and confirm that the description names Android Auto support. A phone-only speedometer will not automatically gain dashboard integration.
- Open the app once while parked. Accept only the permissions needed for its stated features, such as location for speed and routing. Complete map downloads at home if you need offline operation.
- Connect the phone to the vehicle. Use the vehicle’s supported wired or wireless Android Auto connection. Keep the vehicle stationary while pairing, updating or changing settings.
- Find the app in the Android Auto launcher. If it is hidden, open Android Auto settings on the phone and check the launcher customization list. Availability can vary by app version, vehicle and region.
- Test the speed panel before relying on it. Confirm that the current-speed value appears, that a limit is shown only where the app has relevant data, and that navigation voice prompts still work. Compare the reading with the vehicle’s speedometer while parked or on a safe, familiar road.
- Configure alerts before departure. Set camera or overspeed alerts, map themes and downloaded regions before you start driving. Do not use the phone to adjust them in motion.
Why Google Maps may not show speed on Android Auto
Google Maps’ phone speedometer and its Android Auto display are separate experiences. Having a speed readout on the handset does not guarantee that the same control is approved or enabled on the car screen.
Android Central reported on 20 July 2026 that Google was sending an Android Auto speedometer to a limited group of beta users through a server-side rollout. The report associated the feature with Google Maps version 26.29.02.946673643 and described the speedometer appearing beside the speed-limit indicator. That was a limited rollout, not a universal release.
On 9 September 2026, TechRadar reported that some users were seeing the speedometer and traffic data disappear intermittently. The behavior could be related to app versions or beta status, and Google had not officially acknowledged the issue at the time. Treat Google Maps availability as volatile: the same account can show different controls after an update, and a different vehicle-phone combination may behave differently.

Practical checks when the control is missing
- Update Google Maps and Android Auto through the official app store, then reconnect the phone while parked.
- Check whether the phone is enrolled in a beta release; beta features can be enabled or removed by a server-side switch.
- Confirm that the vehicle is running the expected Android Auto version and that another navigation app can appear in its launcher.
- Restart the phone and the vehicle’s infotainment system if the app is present but the speed panel vanished.
- If the feature remains unavailable, use Waze, Sygic or HERE WeGo rather than depending on an experimental Google Maps control.
Offline use: what still works without mobile data
Offline support has several meanings. A downloaded map can draw roads and calculate a route, while traffic, camera databases and changing speed-limit information may still require updates. Do not assume that an app advertised as “offline” supplies every live alert without connectivity.

Download maps while connected, open the app once, and test a route in airplane mode while parked before a trip into a coverage gap. Keep a paper or vehicle-based backup for roads where an app lacks current data.
Safety, legality and privacy considerations
Keep interaction to a minimum
Android Auto’s approval process and templates exist to limit driver interaction. Use the display as a glanceable aid, not as a second dashboard to operate. Enter destinations, select map regions and change alert settings before moving; use voice control for supported actions.
Do not treat app data as the legal instrument
Posted signs and lawful instructions take precedence over an app’s inferred speed limit. Map databases can be incomplete, and camera-alert legality varies by jurisdiction. A red speed pill or a camera warning is a prompt to check your speed, not a guarantee that the app has the correct local rule.
Consider data collection
The Waze comparison specifically flags heavier telemetry and map advertising as trade-offs. Other apps may have different privacy practices, which can change by release and region. Review each app’s current permissions and privacy disclosure, and disable permissions that are not needed for the features you use.
