If you want a space sandbox to play before the next major release arrives, start with the kind of survival fantasy you actually want. No Man’s Sky is the best fit for galaxy-scale discovery and the easiest shared experience. Space Engineers is the strongest choice when designing, dismantling and iterating on ships or stations is the main attraction. Empyrion – Galactic Survival puts the most explicit pressure on oxygen, food, resource gathering and day-to-day survival decisions.

Those recommendations come from each game’s officially described design, not from invented player-count figures, review scores or personal testing. The right choice depends on whether you want to explore an effectively endless galaxy, engineer machines from individual components, or manage life-support logistics in an open world.

Quick picks

Game Best for What defines the experience Choose it if you want
No Man’s Sky Galaxy-scale exploration Procedurally generated space and planets, seamless flight between worlds, survival elements and cross-play Discovery, broad accessibility and a shared universe that is easy to enter
Space Engineers Engineering and construction Assemble, disassemble, damage and destroy ships, stations and vehicles in a survival sandbox Designing machines, solving construction problems and building alone or with others
Empyrion – Galactic Survival Explicit survival pressure Space and planetary exploration, mining, crafting, combat, oxygen and food requirements Managing resources and life support while expanding through an open world

All three combine exploration, construction and survival, but they give those systems different priorities. Treat the table as a starting point rather than a ranking: a player who wants detailed engineering may prefer Space Engineers even if another game offers a larger-feeling universe, while someone who wants oxygen and food to be unavoidable concerns should begin with Empyrion.

What makes a good waiting-period game?

A game is especially useful while you wait for an upcoming release when its core loop can occupy you for more than a short campaign. Space sandboxes do that in different ways:

  • Combat and damage determine whether vehicles and bases are primarily creative projects or equipment that must survive conflict.
  • Multiplayer and access affect how easily you can turn a solo project into a shared one, especially when friends use different platforms.

The games below are separated by those axes. None is a universal substitute for an unreleased title, and development milestones or platform availability can change. Check the current store listing for the edition and platform you intend to use.

No Man’s Sky: best for galaxy-scale exploration

What the game is built around

Hello Games describes No Man’s Sky as “an exploration and survival game set in an infinite procedurally generated galaxy.” That description tells you where the game’s emphasis lies: the draw is the scale and variety of the setting, with survival and construction supporting the act of moving through it.

Its worlds are procedurally generated, so the appeal is not a fixed sequence of handcrafted levels. You can approach the game as a long-running travel project, moving from one planet to another and deciding which discoveries justify further investigation. The game also supports seamless flight from one planet to another, reducing the separation between orbital travel and surface exploration.

Why it works as a stopgap

A waiting-period game needs to provide a sense of forward motion even when you are not following a tightly scripted plot. No Man’s Sky does that through the combination of a very large setting and the freedom to choose where to go next. You can make exploration itself the objective, or use it as the route toward a personal base-building and survival project.

The scale also makes it a safer recommendation for mixed groups. The official description highlights play together through cross-play, and the game has a broad platform presence. That does not guarantee identical features on every edition, so verify the current listing for your hardware, but it does make No Man’s Sky the most straightforward option when access and shared play are more important than highly granular engineering.

Construction and survival expectations

No Man’s Sky should be selected for discovery first, not for the most demanding construction simulation. Its official positioning combines exploration and survival; it does not present itself primarily as a component-level engineering sandbox. If your ideal evening involves iterating on a ship’s structure, dismantling it and rebuilding the systems, Space Engineers is a closer match.

Likewise, choose No Man’s Sky when survival mechanics should add texture to exploration rather than dominate every decision. Its official description establishes survival as one of its core labels, but it does not provide a detailed list of hunger, oxygen or temperature rules. Do not buy it expecting the specific life-support routine documented for Empyrion.

Best match and poor match

  • Best match: players who want to travel between planets, discover a huge procedural setting and play with friends across supported platforms.
  • Good secondary match: players who want survival elements present without making resource logistics the sole focus.
  • Poor match: players whose first question is how many individual components they can engineer, damage and replace on a custom vehicle.

Space Engineers: best for engineering and construction

The central design idea

Keen Software House calls Space Engineers “a sandbox game about engineering, construction, exploration and survival in space and on planets.” The order of that description is useful: this is the choice for players who regard the act of building as the game, not merely as a way to decorate a base.

Everything can be assembled, disassembled, damaged and destroyed. That creates a different kind of progression from a discovery-led game. A ship is not only a vehicle; it is a design that can be revised, taken apart and exposed to consequences. A station or planetary vehicle is similarly a project whose structure matters because it can be altered or lost.

How to think about its sandbox

Space Engineers rewards an iterative mindset. You begin with a purpose—such as a ship, station or vehicle—then translate that purpose into a build. If the result does not work, the sandbox supports disassembly and redesign rather than forcing you to accept a fixed blueprint. Damage and destruction add practical stakes to those decisions.

This makes the game particularly well suited to a waiting period in which you want a project that can absorb dozens of sessions. The objective is not simply to reach the edge of a map; it is to solve another design problem, expand a structure or test a different approach to construction. Because the official description includes space and planetary settings, the same engineering mindset can be applied beyond a single type of environment.

Solo and shared projects

Single-player and multiplayer scenarios support both private experimentation and collaborative builds. Solo play gives you control over the pace and the design brief. Multiplayer lets a group divide work or pursue a shared construction goal, although the practical experience depends on the scenario and the current platform or server setup.

The game is a better fit than No Man’s Sky when your group wants to talk about how a machine is put together. It is a weaker fit when the group mainly wants effortless cross-platform travel and a broad exploration tour. The official material specifically establishes cross-play for No Man’s Sky, whereas the Space Engineers description establishes single-player and multiplayer scenarios but not an equivalent cross-play promise.

Best match and poor match

  • Best match: builders who want every major project to be assembled, revised, damaged and potentially destroyed.
  • Good secondary match: players who enjoy turning a vague idea into a working ship, station or planetary vehicle.
  • Poor match: players who want oxygen and food rules to be the clearest source of survival pressure, or who want the lowest-friction cross-platform group experience.

Empyrion – Galactic Survival: best for explicit survival pressure

The survival loop in plain terms

Empyrion’s official overview combines space and planetary exploration, construction, mining, resource gathering, survival, crafting and combat on land and in space. Its survival description is unusually direct: “You must find oxygen and food – otherwise life in deep space will quickly come to an end.” That is the clearest choice of the three if you want life support to be a constant planning concern rather than a background label.

The practical implication is that exploration and construction are tied to logistics. Before expanding, you need to think about the materials and supplies that make expansion possible. The game’s open-world structure means that decisions about where to go and what to gather are connected to whether you can keep your character supplied.

What you can build

The official FAQ describes block-built starships, small ships, stations and planetary bases. That range gives construction a concrete purpose: you are not restricted to one type of home or vehicle. A planetary base can support operations on a surface, while ships and stations extend the same building idea into space.

Because the game also includes mining, resource gathering and crafting, construction is part of a loop rather than an isolated editor. You gather what is required, create equipment or structures, then use them to reach new places or survive further threats. Combat on land and in space adds another reason to care about the design and location of what you build.

Why it suits players waiting for a new survival game

Empyrion gives you a clear checklist of pressures to manage: oxygen, food, resources, crafting and combat. That makes it useful when the upcoming game you are waiting for is marketed around survival systems rather than purely around exploration or building freedom.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

The trade-off is focus. If your ideal session is an uninterrupted tour through a procedurally generated galaxy, the explicit survival obligations may feel like friction. If you want every expedition to involve preparation and risk, those same obligations are the reason to choose it.

Choose by the question you keep asking

“Where can I explore next?”

Choose No Man’s Sky. Its defining promise is an infinite procedurally generated galaxy and seamless movement between planets. You are selecting it for the setting and the freedom to keep traveling, not for a narrowly defined survival checklist.

“How do I build a better ship?”

Choose Space Engineers. The official description makes engineering and construction central, and the ability to assemble, disassemble, damage and destroy projects gives each design a practical feedback loop.

“What happens if I run out of life support?”

Choose Empyrion. Its survival description explicitly requires oxygen and food, so preparation and resource management are part of the core challenge rather than optional role-play.

“I need something my friends can join easily.”

Start with No Man’s Sky if cross-platform participation is the deciding factor, because its official description specifically highlights cross-play. Consider Space Engineers when your group prefers a shared construction project and can confirm that the relevant edition and scenario support your setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I want a project that can last until the new game arrives.”

All three can fill that role, but they sustain interest differently. No Man’s Sky offers continuing discovery, Space Engineers offers an open-ended engineering brief, and Empyrion offers a chain of survival, gathering, crafting and expansion decisions. Pick the loop you are most likely to repeat after the novelty of the first session fades.

How the upcoming-release context changes the choice

Keen’s official announcement for Space Engineers 2 said that its alpha would launch on January 27, 2025 and described the project as a reimagining built on the VRAGE3 engine. That announcement does not establish a current full-release date in 2026. Treat Space Engineers 2 as context for the wait, not as a promise that a finished version is available on a particular date.

If Space Engineers 2 is the release you are anticipating, the original Space Engineers is the most direct way to spend the waiting period because it shares the engineering and construction identity. Choose it to practice the kind of design thinking the announcement points toward, while remembering that an alpha milestone and a later full release are different things.

If the unreleased game you have in mind is instead exploration-led, No Man’s Sky is the better bridge. If it is explicitly about survival resources and life support, Empyrion is the closer mechanical match. The title of an upcoming game is not enough to determine the best substitute; compare its advertised pillars with the three axes above.

A practical selection checklist

  1. Write down your non-negotiable. Choose one: discovering worlds, engineering vehicles, or managing survival supplies.
  2. Decide how much pressure you want. If oxygen and food should be unavoidable, put Empyrion first. If survival should support exploration without defining every decision, consider No Man’s Sky. If construction consequences are the pressure, consider Space Engineers.
  3. Check your group’s access. Confirm the current platform listing, edition and multiplayer setup. Cross-play is specifically documented for No Man’s Sky; do not assume the same arrangement elsewhere.
  4. Choose a first project. Plan a travel-and-discovery route in No Man’s Sky, a ship or station design in Space Engineers, or a base-and-resource chain in Empyrion.
  5. Verify the release you are waiting for. For Space Engineers 2, distinguish the announced January 27, 2025 alpha from any later full-release information. Do not treat the announcement as a current 2026 launch date.
  6. Recheck current listings before buying. Platform support, cross-play, development milestones and physical-edition availability can change.

Common mismatches to avoid

Choosing by setting alone

“Space game” covers very different activities. A beautiful galaxy does not automatically provide the engineering depth of Space Engineers, and a game with ships does not automatically make oxygen and food central. Match the game to the mechanic you want to repeat.

Assuming every sandbox has the same survival model

The official descriptions support different levels of specificity. Empyrion explicitly names oxygen and food. No Man’s Sky and Space Engineers are both described as survival games, but the supplied descriptions do not establish an identical list of life-support rules. Avoid importing Empyrion’s expectations into the other two.

Assuming multiplayer means cross-play

Multiplayer scenarios and cross-play are not interchangeable terms. No Man’s Sky is specifically described as supporting play together through cross-play. Space Engineers is described as offering single-player and multiplayer scenarios. Confirm the current technical details for your platform before coordinating a group purchase.

Treating an alpha announcement as a finished release

An announced alpha date is a development milestone, not evidence of a completed product or a guaranteed full-release schedule. The Space Engineers 2 announcement provides the January 27, 2025 alpha date and the VRAGE3 reimagining context; it does not provide a current 2026 full-release date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Pick No Man’s Sky for the broadest exploration-first experience and documented cross-play. Pick Space Engineers when building, dismantling and refining machines is the reason you play. Pick Empyrion – Galactic Survival when oxygen, food and resource logistics should create the strongest survival pressure. If you are waiting specifically for Space Engineers 2, the original Space Engineers is the closest thematic bridge, but its announced alpha milestone should not be confused with a confirmed full release.
