For the broadest space sandbox on Nintendo Switch 2, start with No Man’s Sky – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. It combines a procedurally generated universe with planetary exploration, survival systems, ship upgrades, settlements and optional multiplayer, and Nintendo lists enhanced visuals for the Switch 2 edition. Choose Outer Wilds instead if you want a tightly authored mystery in one changing solar system. Journey to the Savage Planet is the better fit for guided alien-planet action and platforming, while Everspace – Stellar Edition suits short, replayable roguelike spaceship runs.

This guide compares the best space exploration games to play on Nintendo Switch 2 by exploration structure, progression, combat, story and multiplayer. It also explains compatibility, storage and what is—and is not—confirmed about Switch 2 performance.

Quick comparison: which space game fits you?

Game Best for Exploration structure Combat and progression Multiplayer Switch 2 status
No Man’s Sky – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Open-ended exploration, survival, bases and ships Procedurally generated universe with travel between space and planets Resource gathering, crafting, ship upgrades and survival Optional multiplayer is listed by Nintendo Dedicated Switch 2 Edition; Nintendo lists enhanced visuals and settlements
Outer Wilds Environmental storytelling and a focused mystery One authored solar system that changes through an endless time loop Discovery and knowledge rather than conventional gear levels Not stated on the Nintendo product information Switch version marked “Supported”; behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch
Journey to the Savage Planet Guided alien-planet exploration with action-platforming Hand-designed planet zones connected by objectives and upgrades Shooting, platforming, scanning, tools and environmental puzzles Not stated in the cited material Switch technical comments exist, but they are not a Switch 2 performance test
Everspace – Stellar Edition Roguelike spaceship combat and short replayable runs Run-based sectors with randomized encounters Customizable ships, weapons and repeat attempts Not stated in the cited material Editorial recommendation; no Switch 2-specific technical review was established

The first decision is whether you want a galaxy-sized sandbox, a concentrated mystery, a guided action adventure or an arcade-like run structure. The games are not interchangeable: each uses “space exploration” to mean something different.

1. No Man’s Sky – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition: best overall sandbox

Nintendo describes No Man’s Sky as “a game about exploration and survival in an infinite procedurally generated universe.” That description is the clearest reason to make it the default recommendation. You can leave a planet, fly through space, land somewhere else, gather resources, improve your equipment and continue without following a single required route.

#1 Best Overall
Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

What you actually do

  • Explore planets and move between planetary surfaces and space.
  • Gather resources used for survival, crafting and upgrades.
  • Improve and customize your spacecraft.
  • Build or develop planetary settlements.
  • Play alone or use the optional multiplayer features listed by Nintendo.

This loop supports several play styles. A player who enjoys cataloging unfamiliar worlds can spend time scanning and traveling. Someone who prefers a practical objective can focus on resources, ship improvements or settlement development. Multiplayer adds a social option, but the game remains structured around personal exploration rather than a mandatory shared campaign.

Why the Switch 2 edition matters

Nintendo lists a dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, released on June 5, 2025. The product listing identifies enhanced visuals, multiplayer and settlements among its Switch 2 features. Those are edition-level features listed by Nintendo; they should not be confused with an independent frame-rate or image-quality benchmark.

The listing also gives the Switch 2 game a file size of 30.3 GB. That is a substantial download for a handheld console, so check available internal storage before installing. A microSD Express card can expand storage, but the file-size listing does not mean an expansion card is required for every console or setup.

Who should choose it?

Pick No Man’s Sky if you want the freedom to decide what “progress” means. It is the strongest choice here for long, self-directed sessions, collecting resources, developing a ship or settlement and returning to an ongoing universe. It is less suitable if you want a short, tightly paced story with a fixed sequence of revelations.

2. Outer Wilds: best for a concentrated mystery

Outer Wilds takes the opposite approach. Instead of offering an effectively unbounded galaxy, it presents an authored solar system whose planets and events change as an endless time loop unfolds. The central activity is learning how the system works, connecting clues and using that knowledge to reach places that initially seem inaccessible.

Exploration is the progression system

There is no conventional equipment ladder that turns an early location into an easy one later. Your advantage is understanding. A note discovered in one place can explain a mechanism somewhere else; observing an event at a particular point in the loop can reveal a route or deadline. Because the world changes over time, returning to a familiar location is often meaningful rather than repetitive.

  • NEXT GEN GAMING: Works with Nintendo Switch 2.
  • READY FOR TOMORROW. Ready for future products with a PCIe-NVMe interface; performs at UHS-I speeds with microSD UHS-I and UHS-II devices.
  • EXPONENTIALLY FASTER PERFORMANCE. Up to 4.4 times faster transfer speeds than our fastest microSD UHS-I cards [9]. Transfer a 2-hour HD movie in less than 3.5 seconds [1]; save up to 2.8 minutes transferring 60 minutes of 4K UHD video [4] shot at 30 fps when paired with the SanDisk PRO-READER SD Express Dual Card (sold separately) [9]
  • DURABILITY YOU CAN COUNT ON: Cards are waterproof, temperature-proof, humidity-proof, drop-proof, shock-proof, magnetic-proof, x-ray proof, and wear-out proof [5].
  • HEAT MANAGEMENT REIMAGINED. SanDisk ThermAdapt helps keep devices from overheating with a specially designed enclosure and controller that uses dynamic adaptive thermal management.

Why it suits a different player

  • Choose it if you value environmental storytelling over crafting and inventory management.
  • Choose it if you prefer a finite, authored experience to an endless sandbox.
  • Choose it if solving the mystery yourself sounds more appealing than upgrading a ship.

Outer Wilds can be a poor match for anyone expecting a traditional action game or a checklist of planets to conquer. Its tension comes from uncertainty, time and interpretation. Avoid looking up solutions if you want the intended discovery experience; an answer can remove the reason to revisit a location.

Switch 2 compatibility

Nintendo’s product information marks the Nintendo Switch version as “Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch” for Switch 2 compatibility. That confirms that the listed Switch software is supported, but it does not identify a separate native Switch 2 edition or promise visual improvements beyond the behavior described by Nintendo.

3. Journey to the Savage Planet: best for guided alien-planet action

Journey to the Savage Planet is an adjacent choice for players who want exploration with a more conventional action-adventure rhythm. Nintendo Life’s editorial description emphasizes alien-planet exploration, shooting, platforming and environmental puzzles. You move through designed areas, scan unfamiliar life and terrain, acquire tools, and use those tools to reach new routes.

How its structure differs from the sandbox games

The planet is not an infinite procedural universe. Its regions, objectives and environmental challenges are authored, so the game can direct your attention toward a next goal while still rewarding detours. New equipment changes which ledges, barriers or hazards you can handle, creating a recognizable ability-gated exploration loop.

  • Exploration: Search zones for resources, creatures and hidden routes.
  • Combat: Use weapons and tools against hostile life.
  • Platforming: Combine movement skills and equipment to cross environmental obstacles.
  • Puzzles: Read the environment and apply the correct tool or route.

Important performance qualification

Technical concessions reported by Nintendo Life concern the Nintendo Switch version. They are not measurements of the game running on Nintendo Switch 2. Treat the game as a design recommendation—guided exploration plus action-platforming—not as evidence of a specific Switch 2 frame rate, resolution or loading performance.

If you want a clear sequence of objectives and frequent action, this is a better fit than Outer Wilds. If you want a universe that can occupy dozens of unstructured sessions, No Man’s Sky remains the stronger choice.

  • Multiple Capacity Options – Available in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB options to suit your storage needs. Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.

4. Everspace – Stellar Edition: best for replayable spaceship runs

Everspace – Stellar Edition is the most run-focused option in this shortlist. Space.com’s editorial selection describes customizable ships and roguelike runs, presenting it as a comparatively approachable space shooter. Each attempt sends you through sectors and encounters, and failure feeds into the decision to try again with a different approach.

What “exploration” means here

You are exploring a sequence of dangerous spaces rather than walking across planets or decoding one persistent solar system. The appeal is choosing routes, managing risk, improving a ship and learning how to survive long enough to reach the next stage. Randomized elements make repeated runs differ, while the shooter controls keep the moment-to-moment play active.

Who should pick it?

  • Pick Everspace if you prefer 20- to 60-minute-style attempts over a single continuous campaign.
  • Pick it if ship combat is more important to you than planetary walking and base building.
  • Pick it if repeating a run to improve your decisions sounds satisfying.

The available editorial recommendation does not establish a Switch 2-specific technical review. Buy it for the roguelike spaceship-combat structure, not for an unverified claim about resolution or frame rate on Nintendo’s newer console.

Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility: what to verify

Nintendo says the Switch 2 eShop includes Switch 2-exclusive software as well as compatible Nintendo Switch games. Its support guidance directs players to title-specific compatibility information. That means “works on Switch 2” should be checked per game rather than assumed for every Switch release.

What is confirmed for these recommendations

  • No Man’s Sky: Nintendo lists both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 versions, along with an upgrade pack. The Switch 2 product page identifies TV, tabletop and handheld play modes.
  • Outer Wilds: Nintendo marks the Switch version as supported, with behavior consistent with Nintendo Switch.
  • Journey to the Savage Planet: The available technical discussion is for Switch, not a Switch 2 test.
  • Everspace – Stellar Edition: The recommendation is based on its roguelike spaceship design; a Switch 2-specific performance assessment is not established.

Before downloading or buying a Switch version, open the current Nintendo product page and read its compatibility label. Editions, patches and availability can change after a listing is published.

Storage and installation planning

Nintendo lists the No Man’s Sky Switch 2 file at 30.3 GB. The exact space required on your console can differ after updates, so leave additional headroom rather than budgeting only the listed game size.

When a microSD Express card helps

Nintendo specifies microSD Express for Switch 2 storage expansion. A card is useful if you keep several large digital games installed, capture screenshots or video, or want to avoid repeatedly archiving downloads. It is an optional expansion accessory, not proof that No Man’s Sky cannot run from the console’s built-in storage.

  1. Open the console’s storage settings and check free space before starting the download.
  2. Compare the available space with the 30.3 GB listing and leave room for updates.
  3. If you need expansion, use a card identified as microSD Express for Switch 2 rather than assuming every older microSD card has the same support.
  4. After installation, keep the console connected to power while a large download and any update complete.

Buying and edition notes

The Nintendo listings establish the No Man’s Sky Switch 2 edition and the Switch listing for Outer Wilds, but the available information does not establish current prices, Amazon stock, physical-edition availability or retailer terms. Check the live Nintendo eShop or a retailer’s current product page for those details. Do not assume that a digital Nintendo listing guarantees a physical cartridge or a particular package.

For No Man’s Sky, confirm whether a listing is the dedicated Switch 2 Edition, the original Switch version or an upgrade path. For Outer Wilds, confirm that the product is the supported Switch version. For the other two games, read the current platform label and any publisher notes before purchase.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Decide whether you want a world or a run. Choose No Man’s Sky for an ongoing universe, Outer Wilds for a finite mystery, Journey to the Savage Planet for a guided planet, or Everspace for repeated attempts.
  2. Set your tolerance for survival systems. No Man’s Sky asks you to gather resources and manage upgrades; the other choices put less emphasis on survival logistics.
  3. Choose your preferred story delivery. Outer Wilds makes interpretation central, while Journey to the Savage Planet and Everspace put more weight on direct action. No Man’s Sky leaves much of the meaning to your own activities.
  4. Check multiplayer expectations. Nintendo explicitly lists optional multiplayer for No Man’s Sky. The supplied product information does not establish multiplayer features for the other three recommendations.
  5. Verify the exact Switch 2 compatibility label. Do this on the current title page, especially when buying a Switch release rather than a dedicated Switch 2 edition.
  6. Plan storage before downloading. The 30.3 GB No Man’s Sky listing makes storage worth checking; a microSD Express card is an optional expansion route.

Common mistakes to avoid

Assuming every Switch game has a native Switch 2 upgrade

Compatibility and a dedicated edition are different things. No Man’s Sky has a named Switch 2 Edition and an upgrade-pack listing. Outer Wilds is marked supported with behavior consistent with Switch. Those labels should not be generalized to every title.

Treating Switch performance comments as Switch 2 benchmarks

Reports about the Switch version of Journey to the Savage Planet describe that version’s technical compromises. They cannot establish how the game performs on Switch 2. The same caution applies to any editorial recommendation that does not include controlled Switch 2 testing.

Choosing Outer Wilds for the wrong progression model

Outer Wilds rewards knowledge, not an inventory full of stronger equipment. If you want crafting, settlements and ship upgrades, choose No Man’s Sky instead.

Buying a storage card without checking the standard

Nintendo specifies microSD Express for Switch 2. Confirm the card type before purchase, and remember that the 30.3 GB game-size figure is a listing value rather than a promise that no update space will be needed.

Final recommendation

No Man’s Sky – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is the best all-purpose pick because it covers the widest range of space-game activities: planetary travel, resource gathering, ship improvement, settlements and optional multiplayer. Its dedicated Switch 2 edition, listed with enhanced visuals, makes it the clearest recommendation for someone buying specifically for the new console.

Choose Outer Wilds when the goal is a memorable mystery rather than an endless sandbox. Choose Journey to the Savage Planet when action-platforming should drive exploration. Choose Everspace – Stellar Edition when you want compact, replayable spaceship combat. The right choice depends less on a universal ranking than on whether you want to inhabit a galaxy, solve a solar-system puzzle, traverse an alien planet or master one run at a time.
