There is no independently proven, universally “best” Space Engineers host in 2026. The safest starting point is to match the host to your platform: Keen Software House lists GTX Gaming as its official dedicated-server host for the PC version and Nitrado as its official host for Xbox. Those designations establish an official relationship, not a guarantee that either service has the lowest price, best latency, or highest uptime for every group. For a small or technically confident crew, Keen’s free dedicated-server software makes self-hosting a third option.
This guide explains what each option actually provides, how to compare rental plans without relying on slot counts alone, when self-hosting makes sense, and the setup requirements and failure points you need to plan for.
Our top pick: Godlike.Host
If you want a managed Space Engineers server, our top pick is Godlike.Host Space Engineers server hosting. It runs game servers for Space Engineers and more than 40 other games, with 10 locations (US West Coast, US East Coast, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Poland, Ukraine, Finland and Singapore), free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day with restore. Its Pterodactyl-based game panel adds a task scheduler, sub-users with permissions and SFTP/FTP access, and support is available 24/7/365 by live chat or ticket. See the current plans, and confirm your platform and region before you order, as with any host.

Quick answer: which Space Engineers hosting option fits you?
| Player group | Best starting point | Why | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| PC players who want managed hosting | GTX Gaming | Keen names GTX Gaming as the official PC dedicated-server host; its Space Engineers pages advertise game-specific configuration, mod management and backup tools. | Those are official and vendor-advertised claims, not independent proof of performance, support quality or value. |
| Xbox players | Nitrado | Keen names Nitrado as the official Xbox host, and Nitrado advertises Space Engineers hosting. | Confirm the exact Xbox plan, region, player limit, configuration and current price before paying. |
| Mixed PC/Xbox group | A plan that explicitly supports the required crossplay combination | Nitrado advertises crossplay, while platform support can vary by plan and configuration. | Do not assume that an “Xbox” or “PC” label automatically permits every cross-platform combination. |
| Technically confident group with a suitable machine and network | Self-hosting with Keen’s dedicated-server software | You control the hardware, files, updates, worlds and access rules, with no separate game license required for the provider machine. | You are responsible for uptime, port forwarding, firewall rules, backups, updates, security and electricity. |
If you need a managed service, choose by platform first and then compare location, allocated resources, administration tools, backups, support and the full renewal cost. There is no verified current price or controlled performance comparison that justifies calling one paid provider the fastest or cheapest.

What a dedicated Space Engineers server changes
Keen Software House describes a dedicated server as a third-party-hosted instance to which players connect instead of using a player-hosted peer-to-peer session. The world therefore does not depend on one player keeping the game open. A host machine can remain online while players join and leave, and administrators can manage the world separately from their personal game session.
Benefits for a regular group
- Persistent availability: the world can stay online when the usual host is offline.
- More predictable administration: world files, settings, mods and permissions are managed in one server environment.
- Reduced host dependence: gameplay is not tied to the connection or computer of one participant.
- Room to grow: a properly resourced server is easier to scale than a player’s gaming PC and home connection.
What dedicated hosting does not guarantee
A dedicated instance does not automatically mean low latency, stable simulation, unlimited mods or good support. Performance depends on the provider’s CPU allocation, memory limits, storage, network route, virtualization policy and the complexity of your world. A distant location can make a well-configured server feel worse than a modest server near the players. Likewise, a large advertised slot count says little about how a heavily modded world will run.
PC hosting: what to check with GTX Gaming
GTX Gaming is the official PC host named by Keen. Its Space Engineers-specific material describes controls for configuring a server, managing mods and creating scheduled offsite backups. These features make it a logical first option for PC players who prefer a managed panel over maintaining Windows, networking and updates themselves.

Questions to answer before ordering
- Which edition and connection model does the plan support? Confirm that it is for the PC version you use and ask whether crossplay is supported if Xbox players must join.
- Where will the server run? Select a location close to the majority of players. Ask which regions are actually available on the plan rather than assuming a country label means a nearby datacenter.
- What resources are included? Request the CPU model or allocation, memory amount, storage type and any limits on CPU time or simulation speed. Do not infer capacity from player slots.
- How are mods and worlds administered? Check whether you can add, remove and reorder mods; upload or download world files; edit configuration files; and restart safely after changes.
- How do backups work? Confirm schedule, retention, storage location, whether backups are offsite, and the exact restore procedure. A backup feature is useful only if you can restore the correct world version.
- What support is included? Ask about support hours, response targets, update handling and whether staff help with game-specific configuration or only the underlying service.
- What will renewal cost? Compare the total for your intended rental period, including the post-promotion price, tax, add-ons, extra storage and cancellation terms.
Use the provider’s advertised features as a checklist, not as a substitute for independent testing. No controlled comparison establishes that GTX is faster, more reliable or better value than every alternative.
Xbox and crossplay hosting: what to verify with Nitrado
Keen lists Nitrado as the official Xbox host, and Nitrado advertises Space Engineers hosting and crossplay. This makes it the natural starting point for Xbox groups and for groups considering a mixed-platform world.

Crossplay is a plan-level question
Before purchase, state the exact combination you need: Xbox-only, PC-only, or Xbox players joining a PC-connected world. Ask the provider to confirm that combination for the selected plan and current game version. “Crossplay available” can describe a service capability without proving that every edition, world setting or player limit works together.
Xbox-specific checks
- Confirm whether the plan is configured for the current Xbox version and whether any feature differs from PC administration.
- Check how invitations, passwords, administrator permissions and player bans are managed from the panel.
- Ask whether mods, scripts or downloadable content have platform restrictions.
- Verify the server’s geographic region and whether players in different countries will use the same endpoint.
- Confirm the renewal price and whether an introductory rate changes after the first term.
Because current plans, regions and limits can change, treat the checkout configuration as the authoritative commercial information for your purchase date.
Self-hosting with Keen’s dedicated-server software
Self-hosting gives you the most control and avoids a recurring rental bill, but it turns hosting into an operating responsibility. Keen publishes the dedicated-server software and setup instructions. Keen states that the provider machine does not need an additional game license; however, at least one Steam account must have a valid game license to obtain the server files.
Published Windows prerequisites
| Item | Minimum stated by Keen | Recommended stated by Keen |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | 3.2 GHz, 3 logical cores | 4.5 GHz, 3 logical cores |
| Memory | 6 GB RAM | 10 GB RAM |
| Operating system for running as a service | Windows | |
| Runtime | .NET Redistributable 4.8 or higher | |
| Visual C++ components | Visual C++ Redistributables 2013 and 2017 | |
| Network | A static public IP is advised for publicly reachable hosting; UDP port forwarding and firewall configuration are required. | |
| Default listen port | 27016 | |
These are Keen’s published specifications, not a promise of a particular player count or simulation speed. Large worlds, scripts, mods, frequent saves and many concurrent players can require more CPU headroom and memory than the stated baseline.
Prepare the machine and network
- Choose a dedicated Windows machine. A spare desktop, workstation or virtual machine can work if it meets the requirements and can remain powered on. A gaming PC that is frequently shut down will not provide continuous access.
- Install the required runtimes. Install .NET Redistributable 4.8 or later and both Visual C++ Redistributables 2013 and 2017. Restart Windows if an installer requests it.
- Obtain the server files. Use a Steam account with a valid Space Engineers license to acquire the dedicated-server software. The machine running the service does not require its own additional game license.
- Assign a stable local address. Reserve the server’s private IP in your router or configure a static address so that port-forwarding rules do not break after a reboot.
- Forward UDP 27016. Create a router rule that sends UDP traffic on port 27016 to the server’s local address. If you deliberately choose another listen port, forward that port instead and keep the configuration consistent.
- Allow the server through Windows Firewall. Permit the server executable or its configured UDP port on the network profiles you actually use. Avoid disabling the firewall globally.
- Configure the world and administrators. Set the world, password, administrator identifiers, save behavior and any mods before inviting players. Keep a copy of the original configuration.
- Run and test locally. Start the service, connect from the same network, and confirm that the world loads and saves. Then test from an external connection; a local test alone cannot prove that Internet routing works.
- Document recovery. Record the install location, configuration files, port, firewall rules and backup location so another trusted person can restart the service.
Self-hosting maintenance that rentals normally absorb
- Applying game and operating-system updates without corrupting a world.
- Stopping the service cleanly before changing mods or replacing files.
- Keeping multiple dated backups on storage separate from the server disk.
- Monitoring disk space, memory use, CPU saturation and unexpected restarts.
- Protecting administrator credentials and limiting router exposure to the required port.
- Maintaining a public address or dependable DNS arrangement if your ISP changes the address.
Self-hosting can be less expensive when you already own a suitable always-on machine and Internet service. It is not automatically cheaper after hardware depreciation, electricity, a static address, backup storage and your time are included.

How to compare rental plans fairly
Evaluate every provider against the same questions. The following framework prevents a cheap-looking slot plan from hiding limitations that matter to your world.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
1. Platform and crossplay
Write down the platforms that must connect and get confirmation for the exact plan. Platform support is the first filter; a powerful server that cannot accept your players is unusable.
2. Location and latency
Choose a datacenter near the group’s center of activity. If players are spread across continents, identify the region that gives the best compromise and ask whether the provider offers a test or cancellation window. Latency is affected by the route between each player and the datacenter, not merely by the host’s advertised country.
3. CPU and memory
Ask for actual allocations or limits. Space Engineers simulation load can rise with grids, physics interactions, scripts, saves and mods. “Unlimited slots” or a high slot number does not describe the CPU time or RAM available to the simulation.
4. World, mod and file control
Look for one-click mod management only if it also permits manual control when needed. Confirm access to world files, configuration files, logs and restart controls. Ask how a failed mod update can be rolled back.

- SATISFACTION GUARANTEED: MasterPieces ensures product quality and customer satisfaction. Enjoy a fun and educational experience with this space-themed board game for all ages.
5. Backups and restoration
Check frequency, retention, offsite storage and restore permissions. A scheduled backup that overwrites the only copy or cannot be downloaded is not a complete recovery plan.
6. Support and updates
Determine who applies server software updates, how maintenance is announced, and whether support handles game-specific errors. A provider may offer 24-hour ticket intake without offering round-the-clock technical resolution.
7. Full-term cost
Calculate the total for the period you expect to play. Include the recurring price after any introductory offer, taxes, storage or memory upgrades, extra backups, setup fees and cancellation rules. Current prices and player limits were not independently compared here, so obtain them at checkout.
8. Evidence quality
Separate three kinds of information: Keen’s official host designation, a provider’s own feature claims, and independent measurements or user reports. Only the third category can establish comparative latency, stability or support quality, and no controlled comparison is available in the evidence for this guide.

Players cannot see the server
- Confirm that the service is running and listening on the configured port.
- Check that UDP, not only TCP, is forwarded on port 27016 or your chosen port.
- Verify the router forwards to the server’s current private IP.
- Review Windows Firewall rules and test from outside the home network.
- Check whether the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT; if so, ordinary port forwarding may not provide a reachable public endpoint.
The server appears online but disconnects players
- Compare the client and server game versions after an update.
- Disable or roll back the most recently changed mod.
- Inspect logs for authentication, script or memory errors.
- Check CPU, RAM and disk usage during a disconnect; a saturated machine can appear reachable while failing to simulate reliably.
A world becomes unstable after a mod change
Stop the server cleanly, restore the last known-good world and configuration backup, and add changes one at a time. Keep a written list of mod versions and load order. Do not overwrite the only working save while troubleshooting.

Performance degrades as the group grows
Measure when the slowdown occurs: on player connection, during combat, while grids are near one another, or during saves. The pattern helps distinguish network latency from simulation or storage pressure. On a rental, ask for a resource upgrade or move to a closer region. On a self-hosted machine, examine CPU frequency under sustained load, available RAM and storage latency before buying more slots.
An update breaks joining or scripts
Read the provider’s maintenance notice, verify that the server and clients are on compatible versions, and restore the previous world if the update damaged it. Keep backups before every major game or mod update.
Decision checklist
- Choose GTX Gaming first when you play on PC, want a managed panel and value game-specific mod and backup controls.
- Choose Nitrado first when Xbox is required or when its confirmed plan configuration matches a mixed-platform group.
- Choose self-hosting when you can meet Keen’s Windows, CPU, RAM and networking requirements and are willing to operate the service continuously.
- Delay purchase if the provider cannot clearly state platform compatibility, location, allocated resources, backup restoration and renewal pricing.
Our top pick for a managed server is Godlike.Host, thanks to its 10 locations, free backups with restore and game panel with a task scheduler and sub-users.
Recheck Keen’s official host listing and the provider’s current offer pages immediately before ordering. Official designations, crossplay support, regions, prices, player limits, support policies and technical requirements can change. On the evidence available for 2026, the defensible conclusion is platform-specific: GTX Gaming is Keen’s official PC starting point, Nitrado is Keen’s official Xbox starting point, and self-hosting is the control-heavy alternative—not a universal ranking of speed, price or reliability.
