The best soundbar in 2026 depends on whether you want a self-contained upgrade for your TV or a complete surround system with a subwoofer and rear speakers. A bundled system such as Samsung’s HW-Q990F is a different purchase from a standalone bar such as Sonos Arc Ultra or Sony’s BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9 (HT-A9000). Start with your TV’s HDMI capabilities, room layout, budget and willingness to place rear speakers; then choose the configuration that fits those constraints.
Soundbar recommendations by use case
There is no universal winner because the three examples documented here solve different problems. Samsung’s HW-Q990F is presented by Samsung Canada as an 11.1.4-channel package with a subwoofer and rear speakers. Sonos Arc Ultra is a wireless Dolby Atmos bar designed to work on its own and expand with compatible Sonos speakers. Sony’s BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9, identified as HT-A9000 on Sony’s US listing, is a premium standalone bar with Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, HDMI input and eARC output.
| Your priority | Configuration to look for | Relevant example | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most complete surround effect from one purchase | Bar, wireless subwoofer and wireless rear speakers in one bundle | Samsung HW-Q990F | More components need power outlets and placement; verify the exact regional bundle. |
| Strong standalone bar with an upgrade path | Standalone Dolby Atmos bar with optional matching speakers and subwoofer | Sonos Arc Ultra | Equivalent surround coverage requires additional purchases. |
| Premium standalone bar with broad format support | Standalone bar with HDMI input, eARC and built-in processing | Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9 / HT-A9000 | Optional components and bundle contents vary by market. |
| Simple TV upgrade | One bar connected by HDMI ARC or optical output, with no rear speakers | Choose a bar whose inputs match your TV | Virtual or reflected surround cannot place sound as precisely as speakers behind the seating position. |
These are use-case examples, not a universal ranking. The current editorial recommendations and manufacturer specifications cited for this guide do not establish a single best model, a complete price-tier list or a market-wide performance ranking.
Standalone bar or complete surround package?
What a complete package includes
A complete surround system normally combines the soundbar with a subwoofer for low-frequency effects and separate rear speakers for sounds intended to come from behind you. Samsung describes the HW-Q990F as an 11.1.4-channel system with the bar, subwoofer and rear speakers. Because those speakers are included, you are comparing a ready-made multi-speaker system rather than a single cabinet.
#1 Best Overall
- Simplified 5.1ch Dolby Atmos Setup: Enjoy immersive 4D sound with real Dolby Atmos and 5.1-channel audio. Five built-in speakers, including two side-firing drivers, create wide surround without rear speakers. Precision DSP ensures <0.5 ms latency for smooth, theater-like sound. Setup takes less than 1 minute.
- Voice Clarity Enhancement: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. Dialogue remains crisp and easy to follow by separating speech from background effects and music, even at low volumes or during intense scenes.
- 300W Output with 6-Driver System: Featuring five precision-tuned full-range drivers and a dedicated wired wooden subwoofer, the system delivers up to 300W of peak power for bold, room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 99 dB, it reproduces everything from subtle nuances to explosive cinematic effects.
- 18 mm High-Excursion Driver: Powered by BassMX technology, the wired wooden subwoofer features a 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 5.3L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.
- HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.
Check the box contents for your country and model suffix before ordering. A similarly named product can be sold as a bar-only package in one region and as a bundle in another. Confirm that the subwoofer and both rear speakers are listed, and note whether speaker stands, wall brackets or power cables are supplied.
What a standalone bar includes
A standalone bar contains the front-facing speaker array and its processing in one enclosure. It can create height and surround impressions through speaker positioning, acoustic reflection and signal processing, but it does not put a physical speaker behind the listener. If you later add a matching subwoofer or rear speakers, the system becomes a different configuration and its cost, placement and setup requirements change.
Sonos presents Arc as a wireless Dolby Atmos home-theater soundbar. Its Atmos home-theater playback requires a compatible television and an HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC connection. Do not assume that “Atmos” on the product box guarantees Atmos from every TV app or source; the television must be able to pass the format over a supported connection.

- Choose a complete package if you want rear-channel coverage immediately and are comfortable placing and powering several speakers.
- Choose a standalone bar if you want the fewest components, a cleaner installation or a system that can grow later.
- Choose a bar-only setup when dialogue clarity and louder, fuller TV audio matter more than an enveloping rear soundstage.
- Choose optional expansion only when the manufacturer’s ecosystem, wireless requirements and future component availability suit your room.
Check your television before choosing a soundbar
HDMI ARC and eARC
HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) sends TV audio down the HDMI cable to the soundbar. HDMI eARC is the newer, higher-bandwidth version. For Atmos from compatible TV apps, Sonos explicitly requires a compatible TV and ARC or eARC connection. Sony’s BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9 listing shows HDMI IN and HDMI OUT with eARC, while Samsung’s HW-Q990F description includes HDMI 2.1 and HDMI eARC.
- Look at the HDMI sockets on the television and identify the port labelled ARC or eARC.
- Check the TV audio menu for a setting such as HDMI-CEC, eARC mode or digital audio output.
- Connect the soundbar’s HDMI OUT (TV-ARC/eARC) port to that labelled television port.
- Set the TV’s output to the soundbar or receiver and select pass-through or bitstream when the TV offers those choices.
- Play a known Atmos title and use the soundbar’s information display or app to confirm the incoming format.
Menu names differ by television maker and software version. If your TV has only a standard ARC port, the bar may still work, but the formats passed through can differ from an eARC setup. Check the TV manual and the soundbar manual for the exact supported formats before buying.

- 5.1.2ch Surround Sound System: A 5.1.2-channel system featuring up-firing speakers, surround sound, and a powerful subwoofer creates lifelike, multidimensional audio. Feel the Sky Around You—raindrops falling from above, helicopters circling overhead, thunder rumbling in all directions. Sound isn’t just around you, it engulfs you, as if the ceiling disappeared. This is Dolby Atmos: not just heard, but felt.
- Up-Firing Drivers with Neodymium Core: The up-firing channels use neodymium internal magnets and 18-core large voice coils to enhance height precision and vertical throw. This aerospace-grade configuration ensures better high-frequency dynamics, delivering focused and elevated sound images that unlock the true potential of Dolby Atmos.
- 360° SurroundX Audio: SurroundX technology combines two rear surround speakers and dual up-firing Atmos drivers to build a true 360° sound field. Powered by intelligent spatial algorithms, the system precisely positions audio around and above you—enhancing Dolby Atmos with a more natural, three-dimensional soundstage. Note: Not compatible with DTS.
- Lossless Audio Transmission: Unlock full Dolby Atmos performance with HDMI eARC, supporting up to 37Mbps bandwidth for lossless 5.1.2-channel audio. Compared to regular ARC, eARC delivers richer detail and better surround effects with no compression. With CEC, your TV and soundbar work as one—power, volume, and input sync automatically for effortless control.
- Advanced App Control: Customize every detail of your audio experience with the Ultimea App. Fine-tune your surround sound with 13-step level adjustment (-6 to +6), optimize with a 10-band graphic EQ, and choose from 121 preset sound settings. Enjoy seamless OTA updates that unlock new features and keep your system performing at its peak.
When HDMI input helps
A soundbar with HDMI IN can accept a source device directly, then send video to the TV. This is useful when a television cannot pass a particular audio format or when you want the bar to handle switching between sources. Sony lists an HDMI IN on the BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9/HT-A9000. Count your sources—streaming box, game console, disc player and set-top box—and make sure the chosen bar has enough inputs or that your TV can switch them without losing the audio format you need.
Optical and other connections
Optical audio is a fallback for older televisions. It carries basic stereo and surround formats but does not provide the same Atmos path as a compatible HDMI eARC/ARC connection. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi can be convenient for music, but they do not replace a wired TV connection when your goal is the television’s highest-quality surround output.
Atmos, DTS:X and channel numbers explained
Dolby Atmos and DTS:X are object-based formats that can place sounds around and above the listener when the source, TV connection and playback system support them. A bar can decode these formats and use its own speaker layout or processing to create the effect; the result is not identical to having physical speakers at every intended position.
Channel figures describe a system’s processing and speaker arrangement, not a direct guarantee of sound quality. Samsung’s 11.1.4 designation indicates the configuration Samsung assigns to the HW-Q990F system, including its subwoofer and rear speakers. Sony’s US listing identifies the HT-A9000 as having 13 speaker units. Compare the complete speaker layout and included components, not just the largest number printed on a box.
Sony’s BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9 supports both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X according to its UK listing. Sonos’ Arc documentation focuses on Dolby Atmos home theater and the TV connection required to receive it. If you own discs, games or streaming services that use DTS:X, verify support before choosing a bar that emphasizes Atmos compatibility alone.

- Wireless Subwoofer, Place It Anywhere: The wireless subwoofer connects to the soundbar without audio cables, giving you the freedom to place it anywhere in your room for flexible setup.
- Mica-Reinforced Drivers for Greater Accuracy: Mica-reinforced diaphragms increase driver rigidity by up to 30%, helping suppress cone breakup and unwanted resonance. The enhanced stability helps reduce distortion by up to 20%, delivering cleaner, more accurate sound with improved clarity and detail.
- VoiceMX Technology for Clear Dialogue: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. By dynamically boosting the 120 Hz–6 kHz vocal range with adaptive EQ and gain control, dialogue stays clear and easy to follow in any scene.
- BassMX Deep Bass Technology: With an 18 mm high-excursion driver, 6.5 L tuned cabinet, and high-density magnetic circuit, the wireless subwoofer produces strong low-frequency output. BassMX optimizes 45–150 Hz bass for deeper, tighter, and more realistic sound at any volume.
- 240W Peak Output with 2.1 Channel System: Featuring a precision-tuned soundbar and a dedicated wireless subwoofer, the system delivers up to 240W of peak power for room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 95 dB, it reproduces clear dialogue, detailed mids, and impactful bass for movies, music, and gaming.
Room, seating and physical placement
Measure the furniture first
Place the bar directly below the TV, centered on the screen. Make sure the cabinet does not block the television’s infrared sensor or cover the bottom edge of the picture. Measure the available width and height, including the space between the TV and any stand. A bar that fits the width can still be too tall for a TV stand.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAllow height and side clearance
Atmos bars use upward-firing drivers, side-firing drivers, processing or a combination of these techniques. Do not push the bar into a tightly enclosed shelf or place objects directly above it. A clear path gives reflected sound a better chance of reaching the listening position. The supplied material does not establish a reliable room-size threshold, so treat room dimensions and ceiling shape as practical variables rather than applying a fixed square-metre rule.
Place subwoofer and rear speakers deliberately
- Put the subwoofer on the floor, with enough clearance for its driver and port, and move it if bass sounds uneven at the main seat.
- Place rear speakers to the sides or slightly behind the seating position, at approximately ear level or as directed by the manufacturer.
- Keep each rear speaker near a power outlet and avoid hiding it behind furniture.
- Run the system’s room-calibration or sound-field-optimization routine after the speakers are in their final positions.
A complete package requires more physical planning than a standalone bar. If you cannot place rear speakers symmetrically or do not want extra power cables, a bar-only system is the more practical choice even if a bundle offers more channels.
What the documented 2026 examples actually offer
Samsung HW-Q990F
Samsung Canada describes the HW-Q990F as an 11.1.4-channel soundbar system with a subwoofer and rear speakers. The same listing identifies HDMI 2.1 and HDMI eARC. It is therefore the clearest example here of a complete out-of-the-box surround package. Confirm the local model suffix, included accessories and supported wireless standards in your market; the Canadian description does not establish availability or pricing elsewhere.
Sonos Arc Ultra
Sonos presents Arc as a wireless Dolby Atmos home-theater bar. It is a standalone product in the comparison, not a bundle that automatically includes rear speakers or a subwoofer. Compatible Sonos speakers can expand the setup, but adding them changes the purchase and installation plan. Atmos playback depends on a compatible TV and HDMI ARC or eARC, so check that requirement before treating Arc as a one-cable upgrade.

Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9 / HT-A9000
Sony’s UK listing names the BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9 and supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, with HDMI IN and HDMI OUT (eARC). Sony’s US listing identifies the model as HT-A9000, lists 13 speaker units and describes Sound Field Optimization. These references establish a premium standalone bar with broad format support; they do not establish that every regional package includes optional surround speakers or a subwoofer.
A step-by-step buying method
- Define the target experience. Decide whether you want clearer TV audio, a cinematic front stage, overhead-effects processing or physical rear-channel sound.
- Inventory the room. Measure the TV stand, note ceiling and wall surfaces, identify seating positions and count available power outlets.
- Inventory the TV and sources. Record the TV’s ARC/eARC capability, HDMI inputs and the audio formats used by your streaming devices, consoles and disc players.
- Choose the system configuration. Select a complete bundle when included rear speakers matter now; select a standalone bar when simplicity or future expansion matters more.
- Verify what is in the box. Look for the bar, subwoofer, rear speakers, remote, cables, brackets and power adapters. Do not infer bundle contents from photographs.
- Check regional model information. Compare the exact model code and country listing. The Samsung, Sonos and Sony examples documented here come from different regional pages, so local specifications and stock may differ.
- Confirm the return and support policy. A room can make a technically compatible bar sound unsuitable, and wireless rear-speaker placement can reveal practical problems that specifications cannot.
- Plan the installation. Reserve space below the TV, outlets for every wireless component and a clear route for the HDMI cable.
Installation and calibration checklist
- Update the TV and soundbar firmware before calibrating.
- Connect HDMI OUT (ARC/eARC) on the bar to the TV’s ARC/eARC socket.
- Enable HDMI-CEC and eARC where the manuals recommend it.
- Select the soundbar as the TV audio output and disable the TV’s internal speakers if both play at once.
- Connect source devices directly to the TV or to the bar’s HDMI IN, depending on which device supports the required audio format.
- Place optional subwoofer and rear speakers in their final positions, then run room calibration or Sound Field Optimization.
- Test speech, music, a sustained bass scene and an Atmos or DTS:X title separately. Adjust the centre/dialogue control before raising overall volume.
- Label each remote and input. If the TV repeatedly switches back to its own speakers, recheck HDMI-CEC, ARC/eARC selection and cable seating.
Common problems and fixes
The bar plays stereo instead of Atmos
Confirm that the source title actually carries Atmos, that the streaming plan and app support it, and that the TV is connected through the ARC/eARC port. Check the TV’s digital-output setting and the bar’s incoming-signal display. Optical output generally cannot provide the same Atmos path as compatible HDMI ARC/eARC.
There is no sound from rear speakers
Verify that the rear units are included in your package and paired to the bar. Check each power cable, remove obstructions and rerun calibration. A standalone bar such as Arc Ultra does not become a rear-speaker system unless compatible speakers are purchased and added.
Dialogue is hard to understand
Use the bar’s centre or dialogue enhancement control if available, reduce excessive bass, and ensure the bar is not inside a cabinet. Check whether the TV is outputting a multichannel format that the bar supports. Do not assume that adding more channels will automatically solve a placement or mix-level problem.
Recommended Free Tools
Bass is boomy or weak
Move the subwoofer a short distance at a time and retest from the main seat. Corners often increase bass level, while large open areas can make it seem weaker. Re-run room correction after moving it and avoid placing the subwoofer inside a closed cabinet.

The TV remote will not control volume
Enable HDMI-CEC on both devices, select the ARC/eARC output and complete the manufacturer’s remote-control setup. If the television has separate audio-output and CEC menus, both settings may be required.
Prices, availability and regional caution
No current price, promotion or reliable stock list is established for this comparison. The cited pages cover the United States, United Kingdom and Canada, and prices, taxes, bundle contents and model suffixes can change by country and date. Compare local retailer listings using the exact model code, then verify warranty coverage, delivery of all speakers and the return period before paying.
Do not compare a bar-only price directly with a complete-system price without adding the cost of optional rear speakers and a subwoofer. Conversely, do not pay for a bundle whose rear channels you cannot place or use. The useful comparison is the cost and complexity of the finished system in your room.

Decision guide
| If this describes you | Prioritize | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want surround effects tonight and accept several speakers | Bundled bar, subwoofer and rear speakers | The Samsung HW-Q990F is documented as this type of complete package. |
| You want one clean bar now and may expand later | Standalone bar with a defined matching ecosystem | Sonos Arc Ultra is documented as a standalone wireless Dolby Atmos bar that can be expanded with compatible speakers. |
| You need Dolby Atmos and DTS:X plus source passthrough | Bar with HDMI IN and eARC output | Sony’s BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9 / HT-A9000 listing documents those connections and formats. |
| Your television lacks ARC/eARC | A bar and connection method compatible with the TV’s available outputs | Atmos capability alone does not overcome a TV connection limitation. |
| You rent, move often or dislike cable runs | Standalone bar with minimal components | Fewer speakers reduce placement, pairing and power requirements. |
The practical winner is the system that delivers the channels and formats your TV can actually pass, fits the room and includes only the hardware you are prepared to install. Treat channel counts and editorial rankings as comparison information, not a promise that one model will suit every home cinema.
