Start with Lies of P if you want the closest all-around alternative to Bloodborne’s attack-first rhythm and gothic atmosphere. Choose Nioh 2 for the deepest combat sandbox, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice for exacting deflection duels, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty for a more forgiving parry loop, or The Surge 2 for targeted melee in a science-fiction setting.

None of these games reproduces Bloodborne exactly. The useful comparison is how strongly each rewards forward pressure, retaliation, parries, deflections, or rapid decisions instead of waiting behind a shield.

What makes combat “Bloodborne-style”?

Bloodborne’s identity comes from more than its Victorian-gothic setting. Its combat asks you to stay close, read an enemy’s commitment, and turn a mistake into an opportunity. PlayStation’s guide highlights the Rally mechanic, which lets you recover recently lost health by striking back quickly. It also emphasizes side-step movement rather than the traditional Dark Souls dodge-roll, allowing attacks from several angles. Its memorable lesson is that “shields are nice, but not if they engender passivity.”

For this list, aggressive combat means a game makes one or more of these behaviors valuable:

Lies of P - PlayStation 5
  • The essence of battle: Wield and master various weapons with unique combinations of Fable Arts and Legion Arms to find out what fits your playstyle
  • Variety of attraction: Enjoy the beautiful, yet dark atmosphere of the Belle Époque era and explore the once prosperous city of Krat
  • Lie system: P is made of a puppet's heart, but he learns how to think and feel like a human by lying
  • Legacy of the classics: The city of Krat, the characters, and even the smallest objects reflect our deepest admiration for the original tale of Pinocchio
  • Retaliating immediately after taking damage.
  • Parrying or deflecting instead of blocking passively.
  • Maintaining pressure to stagger, break posture, or drain an enemy’s resource.
  • Making fast choices among attacks, dodges, stances, weapons, or special abilities.
  • Accepting calculated risk for a larger opening or a valuable upgrade material.

Atmosphere is considered separately. A game can feel mechanically similar while looking nothing like Yharnam, or share gothic machinery while demanding a very different style of play.

Quick comparison

Game Why it fits aggressive combat World and structure Build depth Difficulty profile Listed platforms
Lies of P Parries negate damage and stagger foes; offense, dodging, and fierce counterattacks are central. Belle Époque-inspired Krat, with interconnected environments and a relatively directed story. Mix blade and hilt components to alter speed, moveset, and special attacks. Demanding timing and large boss fights. PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X, according to GamesRadar.
Nioh 2 Fast clashes, ki recovery through timing, stance changes, and yokai abilities that can answer large attacks. Sengoku-era Japan with yokai; level-based missions rather than one continuous route. Weapon-specific skill trees, many weapon types, loot, stances, and yokai abilities. Exceptionally difficult but highly flexible once systems are understood. PC, PS4, and PS5, according to GamesRadar.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Repeated blocks and deflections fill an enemy’s posture gauge and create Death Blow openings. A focused ninja adventure with a more concentrated progression model. Narrower RPG build variety than the other games here. Requires precise, consistent deflection timing. Platform availability depends on the edition and store; verify before buying.
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Deflecting maintains momentum; aggression improves Morale Rank and the Spirit system links offense and defense. A dark vision of the Later Han Dynasty. Spirit and Morale add a combat-and-exploration layer. More forgiving on a first playthrough than the other top recommendations. Check the current edition and platform listing for your region.
The Surge 2 Close-range pressure combines with deliberate targeting of individual limbs. Science-fiction industrial ruins rather than gothic horror. Severed parts provide materials for upgrading the combat rig. Targeting adds risk: the desired limb may be harder to reach or defend. Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, according to GameSpot.

1. Lies of P: the closest overall match

Lies of P is the best first recommendation for someone asking, “What should I play after Bloodborne?” It combines a directed action-RPG structure with a grim, late-nineteenth-century-inspired city, aggressive enemies, large bosses, and a combat loop built around timing.

How its combat rewards pressure

Successful parries negate incoming damage and help stagger enemies. That creates the same broad incentive as Bloodborne’s Rally mechanic: getting out of danger is not always the best answer; the better answer may be to stay engaged and execute the correct response. Dodging remains important, but the game is designed around alternating between evasive movement, attacks, and precise defensive timing rather than holding a shield.

Its weapon system adds another layer. A weapon is assembled from a blade and a hilt, and changing either part can alter attack speed, moveset, and special attacks. This lets you tune the feel of a weapon without abandoning the game’s central demand for close-range decision-making.

Why the setting feels familiar

Krat is a Belle Époque and steampunk-like puppet wasteland. The visual language—gothic streets, mechanical enemies, ruined grandeur, and unsettling transformations—can appeal to the same reader who wants Bloodborne’s mood, even though the story and setting are distinct. GamesRadar described it as feeling almost more like a Bloodborne-like than merely a Soulslike.

Who should choose it

  • Players who want one connected-feeling journey instead of a mission hub.
  • Readers who value atmosphere and a story-led route as much as combat systems.
  • Anyone comfortable learning parry timing while still having dodge and weapon-customization options.

2. Nioh 2: the deepest and fastest combat sandbox

Nioh 2 is the strongest choice when “aggressive” means speed plus an enormous number of combat decisions. It is less interested in reproducing Bloodborne’s atmosphere and more interested in giving you systems to master.

Ki, stances, and weapon-specific choices

Combat revolves around ki, an energy resource tied to attacking, defending, and recovering from exertion. Careful timing can restore ki and let you continue pressure instead of retreating. You also switch among stances and develop weapon-specific skill trees. Katanas, kusarigama, switchglaives, and other weapons do not simply share one moveset with different damage values; each changes spacing, rhythm, and the decisions available during a clash.

Yokai abilities provide another way to answer danger. GamesRadar notes that some can parry very large attacks, allowing an aggressive player to challenge moves that would otherwise force a retreat. The result is a combat sandbox in which preparation, execution, and improvisation all matter.

What makes it less like Bloodborne

Nioh 2 has no shields, which supports an active style, but its mission-based structure, loot, skill trees, stances, and supernatural systems make it much denser than Bloodborne. You spend more time comparing equipment and tuning a build, and the setting is Sengoku-era Japan populated by yokai rather than a single decaying gothic city.

Who should choose it

  • Players who want the most mechanical depth in this group.
  • Build crafters who enjoy loot, skill trees, and several viable weapon identities.
  • Experienced action-RPG players who are willing to learn ki management in addition to enemy timing.

GamesRadar dates Nioh 2 to March 12, 2020 and lists PC, PS4, and PS5 versions. TechRadar characterizes it as exceptionally difficult but rewarding, so it is a poor fit if you want a gentle introduction to the genre.

3. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice: the purest deflection discipline

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is the best choice for a reader who wants combat to feel like a sequence of lethal sword duels. It is a FromSoftware game, but its combat model is different enough from Bloodborne’s that it should be selected for its precision rather than for a familiar build system.

Posture is the real target

Blocking and deflecting are the center of the system. Repeatedly deflecting an enemy’s attacks fills that enemy’s posture gauge; when posture breaks, you gain an opening for a Death Blow. You are therefore encouraged to meet an attack at the correct instant instead of simply rolling away from every threat.

This changes how you read a fight. A successful exchange is not only about reducing the visible health bar. It is about keeping the rhythm, preserving your own posture, and forcing the opponent to recover first. Hesitation can be more dangerous than commitment.

Why its RPG structure is narrower

Compared with Lies of P and especially Nioh 2, Sekiro offers less conventional RPG build variety. Your progress is centered on learning the protagonist’s toolkit and improving your execution rather than replacing your entire identity with a different weapon, armor set, or stat spread.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should choose it

  • Players who want the tightest deflection timing and the clearest duel-like feedback.
  • Anyone willing to practice a single combat language until it becomes reliable.
  • Readers who prefer focused progression over extensive loot and character-build management.

Choose Sekiro only if you are comfortable with a demanding timing test. Its aggressive play is not a shortcut around difficulty; it is the way the game expects you to survive.

4. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty: aggressive parries with a gentler entry curve

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty uses deflection as its main answer to danger and is the most approachable recommendation for players who want that rhythm without starting with the strictest duel structure.

Deflect, Spirit, and Morale

PlayStation’s guidance encourages practicing Deflect to maintain momentum. The Spirit gauge links your actions: offensive techniques can build pressure, while poorly chosen or mistimed actions can leave you vulnerable. TechRadar describes the parry as satisfying and the first playthrough as more forgiving than the other games in its comparison.

  • Out-of-This-World Adventure – Stranded on a lunar space station, Hugh encounters Diana, a mysterious android resembling a young girl. While searching for a way back to Earth, they fight to survive against Bots directed to “neutralize” intruders.
  • Hack & Shoot – Use each character’s distinct abilities to take down enemies. In combat, Diana can hack foes to expose weaknesses so Hugh can blast them with weapons. This unique fusion of gameplay offers an action-packed experience like no other.
  • Space Exploration – Teamwork also extends to traversing the station. Utilize the thrusters in Hugh’s futuristic suit to dash and hover around while Diana hacks security systems to solve puzzles. Only together can they overcome all obstacles.
  • Collect and Customize – Gather materials while exploring the station to unlock upgrades, build out a diverse arsenal of weapons, obtain new outfits, and more. Once you’re ready, use the new gear in battle and take on even greater challenges!

Morale Rank adds a second layer. Aggression improves Morale, and that advantage helps you move through an area. Defeat does not simply erase all progress: PlayStation explains that defeated players can reclaim Genuine Qi. Together, these systems make forward movement valuable while giving a struggling player more room to recover than Sekiro usually does.

Setting and trade-offs

The game presents a dark vision of the Later Han Dynasty. Its historical-fantasy setting is far removed from Yharnam, and its systems are organized around Spirit, Morale, and deflection rather than Bloodborne’s Rally and trick weapons. The attraction is the momentum of its combat, not a visual imitation.

Who should choose it

  • Newer Soulslike players who want to learn parry-forward combat with a more forgiving first run.
  • Players who enjoy a visible risk-and-recovery loop during exploration.
  • Anyone who finds pure dodge-based combat passive but is not ready for the strictest posture duels.

5. The Surge 2: targeted melee in science fiction

The Surge 2 is the outlier for readers who want Bloodborne’s close-quarters intensity but not another gothic fantasy world. It takes the pressure-and-risk idea into industrial science fiction.

Target the part you need

You can target individual body parts during a fight. Hitting an unarmored or vulnerable section can produce a quicker opening, while deliberately severing an armored part can provide materials needed to upgrade your combat rig. That creates a practical reason to stay engaged: the safest attack is not always the most useful one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The targeting system also changes how you approach an enemy. You must choose a limb, manage your positioning, and decide whether the reward justifies the exposure required to reach it. A fight can therefore be won while still leaving you without the component you wanted, or you can accept extra danger to secure an upgrade.

Which game should you pick?

If Bloodborne’s atmosphere matters most

Choose Lies of P. It is the only recommendation here that combines a strongly gothic, Belle Époque-inspired city with a directed action-RPG structure and combat built around parries, dodges, and relentless enemies.

If combat-system depth matters most

Choose Nioh 2. Its ki management, stances, weapon skill trees, loot, and yokai abilities create the broadest sandbox. Expect more menu work and a steeper learning curve than in Bloodborne.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want the best sword-duel timing

Choose Sekiro. Its posture-and-deflection model is the most concentrated expression of attacking into an enemy’s rhythm. Do not buy it expecting the build flexibility of a traditional Soulslike.

If you are new to parry-forward games

Choose Wo Long. Its Deflect, Spirit, Morale, and recovery systems provide an aggressive loop while giving a first-time player more opportunities to regain momentum.

If you want a different setting and a tactical target system

Choose The Surge 2. Its body-part targeting and upgrade-material economy make every close-range encounter a decision about which risk is worth taking.

How to transition from Bloodborne without changing your habits blindly

  1. Identify the new defensive verb. In Lies of P, learn when to parry; in Sekiro and Wo Long, learn the deflection timing; in Nioh 2, learn ki recovery and stance-specific responses; in The Surge 2, learn targeting and limb range.
  2. Stop treating every hit as a reason to retreat. Bloodborne’s Rally lesson does not transfer as an identical mechanic, but each recommendation rewards a different form of immediate pressure. Look for the game’s meter, stagger state, or material reward rather than automatically rolling away.
  3. Practice on ordinary enemies. Bosses combine too many variables. Use early encounters to learn the timing window, resource cost, and recovery animation of your chosen response.
  4. Build around one reliable rhythm first. Avoid changing weapons, stances, or abilities after every defeat. Establish a repeatable attack-and-defense sequence, then add complexity.
  5. Read the game’s failure condition. A depleted ki bar, broken posture, low Spirit, lost Morale, or missed limb target each requires a different correction. More aggression is useful only when it addresses the actual failure.
