If what you miss is the late-game mood of Dark Souls III—bleak fantasy, dangerous routes, demanding bosses and the feeling that every shortcut was earned—start with Bloodborne for the closest atmosphere, Elden Ring for unrestricted exploration, or Lies of P for a tightly authored campaign. Choose Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice if the appeal was mastering precise defensive timing, and Nioh 2 or Nioh 3 if you want faster combat and deeper weapon systems. Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is the newest broad-platform alternative for branching levels, body horror and painless build changes.

“Soul of Cinder” is commonly used as shorthand for the endgame-era feeling of Dark Souls III, rather than a separate game. The best follow-up therefore depends on which part of that experience you want to preserve: Gothic dread, interconnected discovery, build experimentation, boss duels or a focused story.

Choose by the part of Dark Souls you miss

There is no single replacement for Dark Souls. Its identity combines deliberate spacing, stamina management, shortcut-based exploration, opaque storytelling and flexible character building. The games below split those qualities among different designs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Closest atmosphere: Bloodborne, if you can play it on PlayStation.
  • Most freedom to explore: Elden Ring, because a difficult encounter can be left until you have new equipment, levels or tactics.
  • Best focused third-party campaign: Lies of P, with a ruined-city setting and a clearly authored route.
  • Best timing specialist: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, built around posture pressure and deflection rather than a conventional shield-and-build RPG.
  • Deepest established combat systems: Nioh 2, with weapon-specific skill trees, ki recovery and loot-driven optimization.
  • Current high-speed open-world option: Nioh 3, which adds style shifting, customizable moves and four large maps.
  • Newest branching-world choice: Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, a Ming Dynasty-inspired horror game with unlimited skill-tree respecs.

FromSoftware describes the series as combining tense dungeon exploration, fearsome enemies and the joy of discovery with traditional RPG appeal. The recommendations make more sense when you decide which of those ingredients matters most to you.

Bloodborne: the closest atmosphere to Dark Souls

Bloodborne is the strongest choice when the missing ingredient is oppressive Gothic mood. FromSoftware places the game in Yharnam, “a city filled with diseases, blood and death,” where a Hunter confronts transformed creatures while uncovering a mysterious world. The result is more concentrated and horror-driven than the broad medieval fantasy of Dark Souls.

Why it feels familiar

The game retains the series’ careful route learning, dangerous encounters and environmental storytelling, but it removes the comfort of a heavily defensive rhythm. Its health-recovery design rewards striking back soon after damage, so hesitation can be more dangerous than controlled aggression. Trick weapons change form during combat, letting a single weapon support different ranges and attack patterns.

What changes from Dark Souls

Do not expect a general-purpose shield build or the same breadth of armor-and-weapon experimentation. The combat language asks you to stay close, read enemy animations and use movement as defence. Exploration is compact rather than open-ended, which makes shortcuts and visual landmarks especially important.

Who should choose it

Pick Bloodborne if you want a claustrophobic city, grotesque transformations and a reason to remain on offence. Its major practical limitation is access: the cited coverage identifies a PS4 release, so platform availability should be checked before you plan around it.

Lies of P: the best focused third-party campaign

Lies of P is the easiest recommendation for someone who wants the structure of a complete, polished campaign instead of a huge open world. GamesRadar describes it as a game that “innovates the genre while still feeling familiar.” You play a puppet protagonist moving through the ruined city of Krat, combining a readable route with customizable melee weapons and an offensive combat style.

Why it works after Dark Souls III

Krat gives the adventure a clear sense of place. Streets, interiors and mechanical threats are arranged to support a directed journey, so the game can spend more time shaping set pieces and story beats than an open-world game usually can. That focus is useful when you want to finish a substantial campaign without managing a map full of optional regions.

Combat and customization

Its melee weapons can be customized, allowing you to tune the feel of attacks rather than simply replacing one item with another. The combat rewards attacking with intent, but it remains recognizable to players who understand spacing, stamina-like commitment and learning boss patterns from repeated attempts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should choose it

Choose Lies of P when you want a modern, authored Soulslike that stays close to the familiar formula without copying the exact setting. It launched on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One and Xbox Series X on September 18, 2023.

Elden Ring: the broadest exploration choice

Elden Ring is the best answer to “What if I want Dark Souls, but I need more room to solve problems my way?” Its open world lets you leave a punishing encounter, search elsewhere and return with new levels, equipment or tactics. That flexibility changes the emotional rhythm: failure is still meaningful, but it does not always require an immediate rematch.

Why exploration matters

Instead of treating every obstacle as a gate that must be solved immediately, the game turns the surrounding world into a source of alternatives. A player who is underpowered can investigate another route; a player who dislikes a boss’s attack pattern can seek a different tool or approach. This makes it the most accommodating recommendation for people who enjoy discovery more than repeating one arena.

Where it differs from the Soul of Cinder mood

The scale can dilute the compressed, end-of-an-age feeling associated with Dark Souls III. You spend more time crossing broad spaces and choosing your own priorities, while the original series often builds tension through tightly linked rooms and shortcuts. Choose the game for freedom, not for a one-to-one recreation of a linear dungeon crawl.

What the sales figures show

VGI’s October 2025 report lists Elden Ring at 15.6 million units in its post-2015 Steam table and 16.3 million in its PlayStation table. Those are figures reported in separate platform tables, not a universal combined sales total. The same Steam table lists Dark Souls III at 9.2 million units, providing context for the size of both games without implying that the tables measure identical populations.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice: choose deflection mastery

Sekiro belongs in a separate combat category. It is not a conventional Dark Souls role-playing game with many interchangeable builds. Its core question is whether you can read an opponent, deflect at the correct instant and maintain posture pressure until a decisive opening appears.

The combat contract

Blocking passively is not the long-term solution. Successful deflections, controlled aggression and positioning are the route to breaking an enemy’s posture. Duels therefore feel closer to a sequence of timing tests than to a contest of equipment statistics. A player who enjoys learning one demanding language can find it more coherent than a broad build-driven system.

What you give up

You cannot solve every wall by changing to a different weapon class, shield setup or attribute spread. The fixed identity is the point, but it also means Sekiro is a poor choice if your favorite part of Dark Souls was making radically different characters.

Who should choose it

Pick it for boss duels, precise reactions and the satisfaction of turning defence into offence. VGI’s 2025 PlayStation table reports 8.1 million units for Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice; that figure is specific to the report’s table and should not be read as a lifetime total across every platform.

Nioh 2: the deepest established combat system

Nioh 2 is aimed at players who enjoy optimizing a combat toolkit as much as reading a world. GamesRadar’s coverage highlights the ki system, weapon-specific skill trees, fast clashes and yokai abilities, describing the combat’s “fluidity, depth and intensity” as incredible.

Ki and recovery timing

Every exchange asks you to manage the aftermath of your attacks. Recovering ki at the right moment preserves momentum and prevents a successful combo from leaving you helpless. This creates a faster, more technical loop than the slower roll-and-space rhythm many players associate with Dark Souls.

Weapons, skills and loot

Each weapon type has its own skill progression, while yokai abilities add another layer of tactical choice. The appeal is experimentation: you can refine a moveset, combine abilities and chase equipment that supports a particular setup. That depth can be rewarding, but it also creates more menus and more decisions than a minimalist Souls build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should choose it

Choose Nioh 2 if you prefer repeatable missions, fast encounters and build optimization over slowly decoding one interconnected map. It released March 12, 2020 for PC, PS4 and PS5.

Nioh 3: a current open-world, high-speed option

Nioh 3 extends Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo’s approach into a newer open-world format. PC Gamer identifies its release date as February 6, 2026 and describes 14 melee weapon types with customizable skills and moves, a faster style-shifting combat system and four large maps.

How it differs from Nioh 2

The defining change is not simply map size. Style shifting lets you alter how a weapon behaves during a fight, so combat decisions happen at a higher speed and with more emphasis on transitions. The four-map structure provides broad spaces to explore, but it is not the same as one continuous, shortcut-dense world.

Performance and purchase checks

PC Gamer notes that performance can vary by hardware before patches. On PC, check your system against the current requirements and look for post-release performance updates before buying. On any platform, confirm the edition and storefront listing you intend to use, because release availability and features can differ by marketplace.

Who should choose it

Use Nioh 3 as the purchase anchor if you want the newest option in this list, enjoy rapid weapon mastery and prefer large areas to mission-sized stages. It is a poor fit if what you mainly want is a slow, shield-friendly duel system or a single tightly interconnected castle.

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers: a branching-world alternative

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is the most useful modern choice for players who want classic Souls-style level structure with more freedom to revise a character. TechRadar describes a grim interpretation of the Ming Dynasty, body-horror imagery, branching levels, weapon skills and an evasion-first approach that resembles Bloodborne more than a blocking-heavy RPG.

Why the respec system matters

Skill-tree changes are free and unlimited. That removes a common Soulslike anxiety: committing early to a build and discovering much later that it does not suit your preferred weapon or boss strategy. You can test a direction, change it and continue without treating experimentation as a scarce resource.

World and combat fit

The branching design supports revisiting decisions and discovering alternate routes, while evasion keeps the action mobile. It suits players who want a recognizable level-by-level journey rather than a fully open field, but who still want more flexibility than a fixed protagonist provides.

Platforms and current relevance

The game released July 24, 2025 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. That broad current-platform spread makes it the practical recommendation when Bloodborne is unavailable on your system and you still want Gothic-adjacent horror, aggressive movement and traditional branching stages.

Match the game to your tolerance for difficulty and repetition

Difficulty is not a single scale. These games ask for different kinds of persistence.

  • Want to retreat and return stronger? Choose Elden Ring.
  • Want to learn a single precise combat language? Choose Sekiro.
  • Want repeated practice in compact, authored spaces? Choose Bloodborne or Lies of P.
  • Want to improve through gear, skills and optimized rotations? Choose Nioh 2 or Nioh 3.
  • Want to change your build without punishment? Choose Wuchang: Fallen Feathers.

Repetition is also shaped by world structure. A mission-based game lets you replay discrete stages and refine a loadout. A branching or open-world game gives you alternative routes when one challenge becomes exhausting. A compact interconnected game makes every shortcut valuable but offers fewer ways to bypass a wall.

Platform and availability decisions

Check platform access before deciding on a favorite. The cited coverage explicitly identifies Bloodborne as a PS4 release; Lies of P as available on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One and Xbox Series X; Nioh 2 on PC, PS4 and PS5; and Wuchang: Fallen Feathers on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The cited sales tables do not establish a complete platform list for Elden Ring or Sekiro, so verify the current store listing for your region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Nioh 3, treat PC hardware as part of the purchase decision because early performance can vary by system before patches. Confirm the marketplace, edition, region and current price at the time you buy; those details change independently of the game’s design.

A practical decision path

  1. Start with atmosphere. If Yharnam’s disease, blood and Gothic dread sound right, select Bloodborne. If you need a newer multi-platform release with body horror, select Wuchang: Fallen Feathers.
  2. Decide whether you want freedom or focus. Choose Elden Ring for an open world and multiple solutions; choose Lies of P for a directed campaign through Krat.
  3. Choose your combat language. Pick Sekiro for deflection and posture, Nioh 2 for ki and weapon-skill depth, or Nioh 3 for faster style shifting.
  4. Check your platform. Remove any option that is unavailable before comparing mood or mechanics.
  5. Set a repetition limit. If you dislike replaying a boss immediately, favor Elden Ring or Wuchang; if repeated practice is the reward, favor Sekiro, Bloodborne or a Nioh title.

What the sales context does—and does not—tell you

Reported sales figures show that these games have reached large audiences, but they do not identify the best match for an individual player. VGI’s 2025 tables list 25.6 million units for Bloodborne in its post-2015 PlayStation table, 16.3 million for Elden Ring in that PlayStation table, 15.6 million for Elden Ring in its post-2015 Steam table, 9.2 million for Dark Souls III in the Steam table and 8.1 million for Sekiro in the PlayStation table. Because each number belongs to a named platform table, they should be used as report figures rather than combined lifetime totals or quality rankings.

The short answer

For the closest emotional successor to the Soul of Cinder era, play Bloodborne if you have compatible PlayStation access. For the broadest and most forgiving way to keep exploring, choose Elden Ring. For a polished, finite story campaign, choose Lies of P. For combat mastery, choose Sekiro; for system-heavy weapon play, choose Nioh 2 or Nioh 3; and for a current branching-world game with unrestricted respecs, choose Wuchang: Fallen Feathers.
