DatHost is the strongest convenience candidate for a small Sons of the Forest group because a September 2026 comparison lists eight slots, automatic updates, backups, and mod support. That is an attributed roundup pick, not an independently measured performance result. The right host still depends on your players’ locations, renewal budget, backup policy, configuration access, and whether you need mods or crossplay. The game itself documents a hard MaxPlayers range of 1–8, so no “unlimited players” plan can raise the in-game maximum.

What a Sons of the Forest server host does

A rented dedicated server keeps your co-op world online without requiring one player to leave a gaming PC running. The provider supplies the machine, network connection, control panel, storage, and usually maintenance tools. You connect through the game while the server process stores the world save independently of any one player’s computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That arrangement solves the most common problem with peer-hosted sessions: the host’s game must be running, and everyone’s progress depends on that person’s availability. A dedicated server also gives you a stable place to configure a password, assign administrators, restore a save, and schedule restarts.

It does not remove the game’s own limits. The Steam Community Dedicated Server Configuration Guide, updated January 15, 2025, documents MaxPlayers as an integer from 1 through 8. Provider pages may advertise “unlimited players”; read that as a billing or infrastructure statement, not permission to exceed the game’s eight-player setting.

Best hosts by use case

Provider What the September 27, 2026 roundup lists Best fit What to verify before paying
DatHost Eight slots, unrestricted CPU/RAM, automatic updates, backups, and mod support; no price stated in the comparison table. Small groups prioritizing convenience and routine maintenance. Renewal price, exact region, supported game version, restore process, and the meaning of “unrestricted” resources.
4Netplayers $3.09 for the first month at 50% off, then $6.19 per month; automatic updates and backups listed. Groups focused on a low advertised entry price. Confirm that the promotion and renewal amount still apply at checkout, plus slot count, taxes, and location.
Indifferent Broccoli $9.99/month for four players, $12.99 for six, and $15.99 for eight; two-day trial and uncapped RAM listed. Groups that want a clearly stated eight-player tier or a short trial. Trial conversion, cancellation terms, storage, backup retention, and available regions.
Agila Host Philippines location, recommendation for up to four players, unmetered bandwidth, and DDoS protection. A group concentrated near the Philippines. Latency for players elsewhere, exact four-player configuration, renewal price, and save export.
Ascend Servers From $0.43 per slot/player and more than 18 locations. Groups comparing many regions or slot-based pricing. Total monthly cost for your slot count, resource allocation, taxes, and the exact game plan.
Host Havoc Eight slots, FTP, offsite backups, DDoS protection, and a 72-hour satisfaction guarantee. Players who want file access and a stated guarantee. Current guarantee wording, supported platform, backup schedule, and refund exclusions.
Game Host Bros Plans with 12 GB, 16 GB, and 20 GB RAM options and a $23.99 starting figure. Groups that need a published resource tier. Which Sons of the Forest plan the starting price refers to, slot count, region, renewal amount, and whether the RAM figures are dedicated.
Nodecraft Four listed tiers with separate first-month and ongoing prices; game swapping and SFTP mentioned. Player capacity is not stated in the cited comparison. Users who value moving between supported games and secure file transfer. Capacity for Sons of the Forest, storage, backups, game-version support, and the exact recurring price.
PingPlayers Crossplay support, “unlimited players,” three RAM tiers, and a 99.9% uptime SLA listed. Groups investigating cross-platform access. Which platforms and versions the crossplay claim covers, and how it reconciles with the game’s documented eight-player cap.
Streamline Servers 21 locations, a four-to-eight-slot limit, 8–16 GB RAM, and a starting amount of A$14/month. Groups needing a broad location choice and four-to-eight slots. Exact game configuration, currency and billing period, renewal rate, and backup controls.
AxentHost Free hosting funded by credits; five credits equal one GB of RAM for one hour. Intermittent players willing to manage usage credits. Credit purchase or earning rules, session availability, persistence, queueing, and whether the server can remain continuously online.

The figures above are listed terms from the dated comparison, not a cross-provider benchmark. Prices, locations, guarantees, supported versions, and features can change. Treat every “from” amount, promotional first month, SLA, and resource claim as something to confirm on the order page.

How to choose a plan for your group

1. Start with the real player count

Count the people who will play at the same time, not the number in your wider Discord. The official configuration accepts one to eight players. A four-player plan can be sufficient for a four-person group, while an eight-slot plan gives room for occasional guests. Do not pay for “unlimited” capacity expecting more than eight concurrent players in the game.

2. Compare renewal cost, not just the headline discount

Write down the first invoice and every recurring charge separately. The listed 4Netplayers example is $3.09 for the first month at 50% off and $6.19 per month afterward. That distinction matters if you keep a world for a year. Check whether billing is monthly or longer-term, whether taxes are added, whether slots cost extra, and whether backups, additional storage, or a dedicated IP are optional.

3. Put the server near most players

Choose the closest available region to the majority of your group. A Philippines location may be sensible for a Philippines-based group but poor for players in Europe or North America. None of the cited comparisons supplies a repeatable, head-to-head latency test, so do not treat a provider’s location count or marketing language as proof of the lowest ping. Ask about a trial, refund window, or test server when latency is uncertain.

4. Treat resources as plan details, not universal requirements

Published RAM figures are not directly comparable when providers use different CPU generations, storage, oversubscription policies, or container limits. Game Host Bros is listed with 12 GB, 16 GB, and 20 GB options; Streamline Servers is listed with 8–16 GB; Indifferent Broccoli is described as having uncapped RAM; DatHost is described as having unrestricted CPU/RAM. Those descriptions do not establish a minimum requirement or a performance ranking. Ask whether the allocation is dedicated, what CPU share is guaranteed, and how upgrades work.

5. Check world persistence and recovery

A backup badge is not enough. Confirm the automated backup cadence, retention period, storage location, and whether you can download a save. Ask how a restore is initiated, whether it requires support, and whether restoring overwrites the current world. Offsite backups, listed for Host Havoc, reduce the risk of a failure affecting both the live disk and its backup, but you still need to verify frequency and retention.

6. Confirm control and migration options

Look for a file manager or FTP/SFTP access, editable configuration, scheduled restarts, console access, and a way to export the world. FTP is listed for Host Havoc and SFTP for Nodecraft. These features are useful only if they expose the files and controls you need. A provider should explain how to migrate a save to another host rather than locking it inside a panel.

7. Require explicit support for mods and crossplay

Do not infer Sons of the Forest mod compatibility from a provider’s general mod list. DatHost is listed with mod support, but you should still ask which loader, game version, and installation method are supported. PingPlayers is listed with crossplay support, yet the comparison does not define the platforms or versions covered. Confirm the exact setup before purchase, especially if some friends use a different platform.

8. Read the commercial terms

Check the trial length, automatic renewal, cancellation deadline, refund exclusions, support hours, and response expectations. Indifferent Broccoli is listed with a two-day trial; Host Havoc with a 72-hour satisfaction guarantee. Those are different offers, and neither should be assumed to be risk-free until you read the current terms.

Official server limits and configuration

The Steam Community guide Dedicated Server Configuration Guide is the primary technical reference cited here. It was created June 23, 2023 and updated January 15, 2025. It is a community guide associated with the game, not documentation presented as being written by Endnight employees. Recheck it after game updates because file names, ports, and settings can change.

Installation choices

The guide says the server can be downloaded while logged in to Steam or anonymously with SteamCMD. The anonymous method uses application ID 2465200, so a rented host or a self-hosted machine can install the dedicated-server files without a personal Steam login. On Windows, the guide names StartSOTFDedicated.bat as the start file.

Required network ports

Setting Protocol Default port Purpose described by the guide
GamePort UDP 8766 Game traffic.
QueryPort UDP 27016 Server query traffic.
BlobSyncPort UDP 9700 Blob synchronization traffic.

If you self-host, forward the documented UDP ports through your router and allow them through the machine’s firewall. On a rented server, the provider normally handles the external networking, but you should still confirm which ports are assigned and whether a firewall rule or dedicated address is required.

Configuration and save location

The server configuration is JSON in dedicatedserver.cfg. The guide places user data under LocalLowEndnightSonsOfTheForestDS; configuration and save data are stored there. A control panel may present these files as form fields, but the underlying values still need valid JSON when edited directly.

Player cap, password, and administrators

  • Player cap: set MaxPlayers to an integer from 1 through 8.
  • Privacy: use a password when the world should be private.
  • Administration: use the owners file for administrative access and include only trusted Steam IDs.

Download a copy of the configuration and save before making changes. If a provider offers a one-click update, check whether it preserves the config and world files; a game update that replaces files can otherwise undo a manual change.

Hosted server versus self-hosting

Choose hosting when availability matters

A hosted plan is usually the practical choice when nobody wants to maintain a Windows or Linux machine, configure port forwarding, monitor uptime, or handle restarts. The provider’s panel can simplify backups, updates, password changes, and access for several administrators. You pay a recurring fee in exchange for that convenience and for a network location chosen from the provider’s regions.

Choose self-hosting when control matters more than convenience

Self-hosting gives you direct access to the files, logs, firewall, and hardware. It can be sensible for an experienced administrator with a reliable connection and a machine that can stay online. You are responsible for installing app ID 2465200, opening UDP ports 8766, 27016, and 9700, maintaining dedicatedserver.cfg, protecting the owners file, and creating tested backups. A self-hosted server is not automatically free: electricity, hardware, bandwidth, and your time are real costs.

A practical hybrid approach

For a short event, try a provider’s trial or guarantee and export the save regularly. For a long-running world, keep an independent copy of the save even when the host advertises backups. That gives you an exit path if pricing, regions, or supported versions change.

Common buying and setup mistakes

Confusing a promotional price with the normal rate

A low first-month amount can become expensive after renewal. Record the recurring price before checkout and set a calendar reminder before the next billing date.

Assuming “unlimited” means unlimited in-game players

The documented game setting remains 1–8. Ask what the provider’s unlimited label actually covers: storage, bandwidth, plan changes, or an infrastructure policy.

Picking a distant region because it is cheaper

Price savings can be outweighed by latency and unstable connections. List each player’s country or region and select the location that minimizes the group’s worst connection, not just the host’s distance from one person.

Relying on a backup badge without testing restore

A backup that cannot be downloaded or restored promptly is not a useful recovery plan. Make a harmless test change, create or wait for a backup, and confirm that the panel shows the expected restore point.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Editing files while the server is running

Stop the server before changing JSON or replacing a save. Keep the original file, validate the edited structure, and restart while watching the console for parse errors.

Giving administrative access too broadly

The official guide says the owners file should contain only trusted Steam IDs. Do not paste a public Discord list into it, and remove access when a player no longer needs administration.

Assuming a provider supports every platform or mod

Crossplay and mod support depend on the game version, platform combination, and installation method. Get a written confirmation for your exact setup before moving an established world.

A purchase checklist

  • Does the plan provide the number of slots your group needs, up to the game’s eight-player maximum?
  • What is the first invoice, and what is the recurring renewal amount?
  • Which data-center region is available, and can you move regions later?
  • Are CPU and RAM dedicated, capped, or shared?
  • How often are backups made, how long are they retained, and can you download them?
  • Can you edit dedicatedserver.cfg, restart the process, and view logs?
  • Is FTP or SFTP available for migration and manual file work?
  • Are automatic updates optional, scheduled, or forced?
  • Which mods and crossplay combinations are supported for the current game version?
  • What are the trial, refund, cancellation, renewal, and support terms?

Which option should you choose?

For the simplest small-group setup

Start with DatHost if its current checkout provides a suitable region and renewal price. The September 2026 roundup selected it for a small co-op group and listed eight slots, automatic updates, backups, and mod support. Treat those as the roundup’s stated features, then confirm each one for the plan you are about to buy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a price-led comparison

Use the listed 4Netplayers terms as a starting point, not a guaranteed bargain: $3.09 for the first month at 50% off followed by $6.19/month was the comparison’s example. Compare the full annual cost with Indifferent Broccoli’s listed $9.99, $12.99, and $15.99 monthly tiers for four, six, and eight players.

For regional or file-control needs

Agila Host may be worth investigating for a Philippines-centered group, while Ascend Servers’ listed 18-plus locations may help a geographically dispersed group. Host Havoc is a candidate when FTP, offsite backups, and the stated 72-hour guarantee matter. Verify current terms, because none of these listings is a latency test or a guarantee of performance for your players.

For intermittent or experimental use

AxentHost’s credit model can suit occasional sessions, but five credits providing one GB of RAM for one hour is a usage unit, not an always-on free server. Work out how many credits a normal week requires and whether the service keeps your world available between sessions.

Bottom line

There is no independently tested, universal winner in the available 2026 comparisons. For most small groups, shortlist a plan with eight or fewer slots, a nearby region, transparent renewal pricing, downloadable backups, configuration access, and explicit support for your game version. DatHost is the leading convenience candidate named by the September 2026 roundup; 4Netplayers, Indifferent Broccoli, Host Havoc, Game Host Bros, Agila Host, Ascend Servers, Streamline Servers, Nodecraft, PingPlayers, and AxentHost each become more or less suitable when their stated terms match your group. Confirm the checkout details and keep your own save copy before committing a long-running world.
