Yes, you can run mods on a Sons of the Forest dedicated server, but the current supported route is RedLoader. Install RedLoader in both the game and dedicated-server folders, then use only mods whose pages explicitly say they support dedicated servers. Some mods run on the server, some must be installed by every player, and a few are host-only. Treat older guides that recommend BepInEx or claim server mods cannot work as potentially outdated.
The safest setup is to update the Steam game, back up your save and game folder, install RedLoader from its official GitHub repository or RedManager, match mod versions across the server and clients, and test privately before inviting players.

What is the current answer for dedicated-server modding?
RedLoader, developed by ToniMacaroni, is the loader documented for Sons of the Forest dedicated servers. On Windows, its documentation says a dedicated server should work after you extract RedLoader into the server directory. On Linux, the documented method uses Wine with a DLL override. A separate Docker image is maintained for container-based deployments.
That does not mean every mod works in multiplayer. A mod page must state dedicated-server support, and it must identify which machines need the files. Installing an ordinary single-player mod on a server can do nothing, prevent the server from starting, or cause clients to disconnect.

Older hosting articles disagree about this. Some say server-side mods are unavailable or unstable; another says the loader must be installed on both the client and server. Those articles may describe older patches or a different loader. For a current installation, give priority to RedLoader documentation and the individual mod’s current page.
Understand the three mod-installation models
Before choosing a mod, classify it by where it runs. The distinction is more important than a popularity list.

When a page does not clearly state its model, do not guess. Ask the author or leave the mod out of a public server. A private test server is the fastest way to discover whether a claimed client-only or server-only arrangement is accurate for your game build.
Prepare the game before installing anything
- Update Steam first. RedLoader and many mods track the latest game patch. A loader or mod that worked before an update may fail afterward.
- Back up the save and game directory. Keep a copy outside the live installation so you can restore the world if a mod damages a save or prevents startup.
- Record the game build. Write down the date of the update and the RedLoader and mod versions you install. This makes it possible to reproduce a working setup.
- Choose one loader. Do not mix RedLoader files with an older BepInEx-based installation. Conflicting loaders make failures difficult to diagnose.
- Plan a private test. Create a password-protected server or test world before opening the server to your regular players.
Install RedLoader on a player computer
RedManager is the simplest route: it installs RedLoader and can install mods and their dependencies in one click, according to the installation instructions on sotf-mods.com. Manual installation is useful when you need to control versions or operate a machine without the manager.

RedManager method
- Download RedManager only from the official RedLoader/RedManager distribution channel.
- Point it at your Sons of the Forest installation.
- Install the current RedLoader release.
- Use its mod browser or import function to install a mod and any dependencies listed by the author.
- Launch the game once, then close it. Confirm that the loader-created folders and the mod files exist before joining a server.
Manual method
- Download the RedLoader archive from the official GitHub repository.
- Extract its contents beside
SonsOfTheForest.exe, not into an unrelated download folder or an extra nested directory. - Start the game once. RedLoader should create its
_RedLoader,Mods, andLibsfolders. - Read each mod’s installation instructions and place its files in the location specified by that mod. Do not rename assemblies or remove dependency files.
- Start the game again and verify that the mod loads in a private session.
If the folders are not created, the archive was probably extracted to the wrong level, the game was not launched through the expected executable, or the loader version does not match the current game patch.
Install RedLoader on a Windows dedicated server
Find the directory containing SonsOfTheForestDS.exe. This is the directory that must receive the RedLoader files; installing the loader in your personal game’s folder does not modify the dedicated server.
- Stop the server service or process.
- Back up the server’s save data and the entire server directory.
- Extract the RedLoader archive directly into the folder containing
SonsOfTheForestDS.exe. - Start the dedicated server once, allow the loader to create its folders, and then stop it cleanly.
- Install only mods whose pages explicitly mention dedicated-server support. Put server-side files in the folders specified by the mod author.
- Start the server without players and watch for a normal startup. Then connect with one test account before inviting the rest of the group.
A server can start successfully while a mod is still unusable. Test the actual command, building action, item, or rule that the mod changes. A loader that appears in the directory is not proof that every installed mod loaded correctly.
Install on Linux with Wine
The RedLoader documentation’s Linux procedure is to extract the archive into the dedicated-server directory, set WINEDLLOVERRIDES to version=n,b, and run the server through wine64. The same arrangement applies whether you launch the executable directly or wrap it in a service manager.

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="version=n,b" wine64 SonsOfTheForestDS.exeUse the exact capitalization and value shown above. If you are using a script, set the variable in the server process’s environment rather than only in an unrelated interactive shell. A maintained Docker image is available as a separate option for administrators who prefer a containerized deployment; follow that image’s own documentation for paths, volumes, and startup parameters.
After the first launch, confirm that RedLoader creates its folders in the directory that contains the Windows dedicated-server executable. If the folders appear in a Wine prefix or another directory, correct the working directory before adding mods.

- Browse the current mod catalogue at sotf-mods.com or another page maintained by the mod author.
- Open the individual mod page, not just a list or ranking.
- Check the supported game patch, RedLoader requirement, dependencies, dedicated-server statement, and installation side.
- Install the server component first when the page describes a server component. Install the client component on every player machine when required.
- Use the same mod version everywhere unless the author explicitly documents a different server/client version pairing.
- Restart the server after adding or removing a mod, then test with one client.
- Give players a written mod list and version list. A screenshot of a ranking page is not a reliable synchronization method.
Some mods are designed to be server-only, while others require all clients to carry identical files. The exception is a mod whose author explicitly says that only the host needs it. Never infer that requirement from the mod’s name or from how another game handles plugins.
Which Sons of the Forest mods are worth considering?
There is no verified universal ranking. Download counts and list positions change, and a mod that is excellent for a private building world may be inappropriate for a competitive or progression-focused server. The following options appear repeatedly in current or recent mod lists, but each still needs a compatibility check against your game build.

Administration and dedicated-server control
DedicatedSuperuser is described as a mod made for dedicated servers, allowing a client to run commands. It is the most directly relevant choice when the administrator needs in-game server control. Confirm the command permissions and whether the current release requires a client component before deploying it to an open server.
An admin menu listed on Nexus Mods advertises more than 170 features and shows an August 2026 update. That figure is a feature count for one listing, not a verified ranking or a guarantee that all features work on a dedicated server. Treat it as a broad toolbox and test administrative actions with a non-owner account.
Building and traversal
- Enable Building in Caves is repeatedly listed among popular choices for groups that want to expand construction locations. Test cave geometry and save loading before using it in a long-running world.
- BuildShare is aimed at sharing or reusing building work. Check whether every participant needs the client files and whether shared structures persist after a player without the mod joins.
- InfiniteZipline is a traversal-oriented option for groups that want fewer zipline limitations. Its effect can alter progression, so agree on the rule before adding it to a shared campaign.
- Aim Assist appears in current popularity listings. Because aiming changes can affect fairness, decide whether it belongs on a cooperative server and verify that the page identifies a supported multiplayer arrangement.
Older quality-of-life suggestions
Older “best mods” articles commonly mention Simple Zoom, Faster Inventory Panning, Let There Be Light, Environment Restoration, and SOTF Autosave. Those lists are roughly two to three years old. Use them as ideas only: verify that each project has a current RedLoader release, supports the current game patch, and states whether it works on a dedicated server. Do not install an abandoned version merely because an old article calls it essential.

Add one mod or one tightly related group at a time. This gives you a known-good checkpoint and prevents a dozen simultaneous changes from obscuring the cause of a failure.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The server starts as an unmodded server
Stop the server and verify that RedLoader was extracted beside SonsOfTheForestDS.exe, not beside a shortcut, a parent folder, or a second nested folder. Launch once to create the loader directories. If the loader still does not appear, reinstall the current release from the official source and remove remnants of a different loader before testing again.
A mod does not appear in game
Check the mod page’s installation side and dependencies. A client-only mod will not activate because it was copied to the server, and a server-only mod may have no visible client menu. Install every required dependency and confirm that the files are in the exact folder named by the author.
Players are disconnected or see different behavior
Compare the game patch, RedLoader release, mod names, and mod versions on every machine. Remove optional client-side changes temporarily and reconnect with a minimal synchronized set. If the mod page says only the host needs the files, follow that instruction rather than distributing an incompatible client package.
The Linux server fails to launch
Confirm that the process is running from the directory containing SonsOfTheForestDS.exe, that it uses wine64, and that WINEDLLOVERRIDES is exactly version=n,b. Test the unmodded server first, then add RedLoader, then add one mod at a time.
The server crashes after adding a mod
Stop the server, restore the last known-good backup, and remove the newest mod or dependency. Reproduce the crash with only that change present. If it returns, the mod is incompatible with the current patch or with another installed mod; leave it disabled until the author publishes a compatible release.

Do not combine instructions from that guide with the current RedLoader setup. Older guides may accurately describe a previous toolchain, but they do not establish current dedicated-server support. Start from the present RedLoader instructions and the individual mod page.
Maintain a modded server after updates
- Before a Steam update, stop the server and copy the save and server directory.
- Update the game, then check RedLoader for a release that supports the new patch.
- Review every installed mod page for a compatibility note or replacement version.
- Update the server and clients as a coordinated change; do not let players join with an untracked mixture of versions.
- Run a private smoke test covering login, administration, building, travel, and saving.
- Keep a plain-text inventory of the loader, mods, versions, installation side, and date tested.
When retiring a mod, remove it from the server and from every client that used it, then test an existing save and a fresh save separately. Some gameplay changes can leave data behind even after the plugin is removed, which is why a backup is essential before each major change.
