Fortinet FortiGate is a documented small-business firewall alternative to evaluate, but the available evidence does not establish a universal best replacement for SonicWall. Other product families named in a 2026 third-party comparison include WatchGuard Firebox, Sophos Firewall, Cisco Meraki MX, Check Point Quantum Spark, Barracuda CloudGen, Ubiquiti UniFi, Netgate pfSense, and Juniper SRX. Treat these as a shortlist for investigation—not a verified ranking or model-by-model recommendation.
The right choice depends on the security features you will enable, network layout, number of locations and remote users, management capacity, support needs, and total cost over time. Compare specific models and service bundles against those requirements before choosing a replacement.
Which SonicWall alternatives belong on an SMB shortlist?
Fortinet’s small-business security materials describe FortiGate firewalls and related cloud management. That makes FortiGate a grounded candidate to assess, not an automatic winner. The other names below appear in a 2026 comparison by The Network Installers; their current models, lifecycle status, capabilities, and prices have not been independently verified here.

How do you choose the right replacement?
Start with the network and the people who will run it, then compare specific models. Employee count by itself is not enough to size a firewall: growth, traffic, remote access, topology, inspection requirements, and available administration all affect the choice.
- Traffic and inspection: Estimate expected traffic and identify which security features must run. Compare performance with those features enabled, not only a headline throughput figure.
- Network design: List WAN and LAN connections, required interfaces, segmentation needs, VPN use, and how branches or other sites connect.
- Users and locations: Account for on-premises and remote users, the number of sites, and whether you need centralized management.
- Operations: Decide whether internal IT staff or a managed service provider will configure, monitor, update, and troubleshoot the firewall. A system that exceeds the team’s management capacity can create ongoing risk and cost.
- Lifecycle and migration: Confirm current product availability, support terms, lifecycle status, and the work required to move rules, VPNs, network segments, and other settings from the existing setup.
Fortinet’s buyer guidance also points to business growth, topology, administration, traffic processing, interfaces, inspection, and remote-user access as selection considerations. Use those as prompts for requirements—not as a vendor-neutral endorsement.

What does a firewall replacement really cost?
Compare total ownership cost, not just the appliance price. Fortinet’s pricing guidance says a small-business firewall’s hardware can run from $700 to $1,000, and that businesses with 15 to 100 users can expect $1,500 to $4,000 for firewall hardware. These are Fortinet’s general estimates, not current quotes, market averages, or a comparison across vendors; they do not establish what a particular model or security bundle will cost.
Fortinet notes that price also varies with performance and capacity, subscriptions, support, configuration, monitoring, integration, and maintenance. Include the relevant costs in a quote comparison:

- Hardware acquisition and deployment
- Required security subscriptions and annual support
- Installation, configuration, and integration with existing systems
- Ongoing monitoring, administration, and maintenance
- Migration effort and any managed-service costs
Ask vendors or authorized partners to itemize these costs for the same requirements and term. A lower purchase price may not mean a lower operating cost if it requires more administration, additional services, or outside support.

Before signing a renewal or replacement order, request model-specific answers in writing. The available comparisons do not establish a neutral performance winner, verified current prices across these vendors, or a best SKU for a given business.
- Does the model meet your required throughput with the planned security services enabled?
- Does it provide the WAN, LAN, VPN, and segmentation capabilities your network requires?
- What subscriptions, support, and management services are needed, and how do their terms and costs change over time?
- Is the model currently supported and appropriate for your expected deployment period?
- Who will deploy, monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot it, and what will that work cost?
- What migration tasks are required, and how will the change affect remote users and other sites?
Use a shortlist to solicit comparable, requirement-based proposals. That is more reliable than treating a third-party list or vendor hardware estimate as a final recommendation.
