The right graphics-tablet software depends on what you draw and which device you use. For free desktop painting, start with Krita; for comics and webtoons, look at Clip Studio Paint; for drawing alongside photo editing, consider Photoshop; and for drawing directly on an iPad, Procreate is the tablet-specific choice. Corel Painter is another option to investigate if natural-media-style painting is your priority.
These are use-case recommendations, not a hands-on ranking: no single program is the best fit for every artist. Before choosing, check compatibility for your exact operating system, tablet and pen, and confirm that the app supports the pressure features you want.
How to choose software for a graphics tablet
Start with the work you need to do, then confirm the app works with your tablet and operating system. A program can offer pressure-sensitive brushes yet still require a particular driver, stylus, or input setting for your setup.

- Workflow: Decide whether you mainly paint, make comics or webtoons, animate, or edit photographs.
- Device and operating system: Check the current vendor compatibility information for your specific computer or tablet.
- Pen input: Look for support for your stylus and the pressure, tilt, rotation, or other controls you intend to use.
- Cost model: Compare current purchase or subscription terms on the vendor’s site; prices and plans can change.
- Projects and file exchange: If you work across apps or need multi-page projects, verify that the formats and workflow you rely on are supported.
The five options below address different priorities. Their order is not a performance ranking.

Five graphics-tablet programs to consider
1. Krita: free desktop painting and 2D animation tools
Krita is a strong starting point if you want a free desktop painting program. The project describes it as “a free and open source application” on its download page. The page lists Windows 8.1 or later, macOS 10.15, and Linux, and says a tablet compatible with the operating system can be used. It lists 4 GB RAM as a minimum and 16 GB as recommended. Its features page also describes 2D animation tools.
The download page says Apple iPads and iPhones are not supported by that download, while Android builds are available. Check the project’s current download information for your device before installing.

2. Clip Studio Paint: comics, manga, webtoons, illustration, and animation
Clip Studio Paint is the most specialized choice in this group for comic-making workflows. Its product page describes drawing and painting features, comic-panel tools, multi-page projects, webtoon tools, and animation features. It lists Windows, macOS, iPad, iPhone, Galaxy, Android, and Chromebook.
Pressure support depends on the tablet and pen. The vendor’s pressure-sensitivity support page lists supported pens for tablet versions, including Apple Pencil generations and Apple Pencil Pro for iPad, Samsung Galaxy S Pen, and selected Wacom, XPPen, and HUION models for Galaxy or Android devices. That list should not be treated as a guarantee for every model or desktop setup; check the page for your exact hardware and consult the hardware maker for connection instructions.

3. Adobe Photoshop: painting within a broader image-editing workflow
Photoshop makes sense if drawing is one part of a wider image-editing workflow. Adobe’s graphics-tablet guide explains that tablet input can control painting tools using pen pressure, angle, rotation, or the stylus wheel. It gives brush size and opacity as examples of controls that can respond to pressure.
That help page was last updated May 24, 2023. Use it as guidance on the documented brush controls, not as a current compatibility or pricing list; check Adobe’s latest information for your device and plan.

5. Corel Painter: consider it for natural-media-style painting
Corel Painter is worth investigating if simulated natural-media painting is the deciding preference. The available supporting coverage is secondary editorial context rather than current vendor documentation or a hands-on test, so confirm the program’s current features, system requirements, and tablet support with the vendor before deciding.

Check pressure input before you commit
Pressure sensitivity is not a universal on/off property of a graphics tablet. The app, operating system, driver, tablet, and pen all have to work together. A useful test is to make a few strokes and confirm that the brush response changes as expected—for example, in size or opacity—rather than assuming that a pressure-sensitive pen will behave identically in every program.
Krita on Windows: choose and test the tablet input method
Krita’s tablet settings manual describes two Windows input options: WinTab and Windows 8+ Pointer Input. The latter depends on the tablet driver supporting Windows Ink.
- In Krita, open the tablet settings and select the input method appropriate for your driver: WinTab or Windows 8+ Pointer Input.
- Use Krita’s tablet tester to check whether the app receives pen events. The manual describes a blue line as an indication of tablet events, including precise coordinates and sensor data such as pressure.
- If pressure or position is not registering as expected, check the tablet driver and the relevant input setting, then test again. These checks can help identify a setup problem but do not guarantee every hardware and software combination will work.
For other apps and devices
Use the software vendor’s current support information for your exact tablet and pen. Clip Studio Paint directs users to hardware makers for connection instructions, and Adobe’s cited tablet guide does not serve as a current device-compatibility matrix. If a particular pressure feature matters to your work, confirm it before relying on it.
