The right Softr alternative depends on what you mean by “own.” If you want to run the portal software yourself, Budibase is the clearest option in this comparison, though it is more technical and is strongest for internal tools. If you need enterprise deployment control over an existing database, Jet Admin is worth evaluating. For a hosted portal connected to existing business data, Noloco is a closer like-for-like alternative. None of those distinctions alone establishes that you own the application’s source code or can move everything freely.
Before choosing, decide whether your priority is control of the data, hosting, code, migration, or simply a branded client experience. Then check the specific plan’s permissions, deployment options, external-user costs, and export path.
What “owning” a client portal can mean
A portal can feel like yours because it uses your branding, while its application and hosting remain under a vendor’s control. Separate these five questions before comparing products:
- Data: Where does client information live—a database you already use, a platform’s built-in database, or another service?
- Deployment: Can the software run in your own environment, or is it vendor-hosted?
- Code: Can you access and modify the application’s source code? Do not assume a visual builder provides this.
- Portability: Can you export records, files, and relationships in a usable form if you leave?
- Experience: Can you present a branded, permissioned place for clients to view information and take actions?
These are separate forms of control, not rungs on a single ownership scale. A system may connect to a database you control while its portal layer remains hosted by a vendor; a self-hosted tool may give you deployment control without making a finished client portal effortless.

What Softr provides as the baseline
Softr describes a portal builder that can use its built-in database or connect to sources including Airtable, Google Sheets, and Notion. Its product pages describe branded portals, user groups, controls over records and fields, forms, workflows, dashboards, and a built-in AI assistant that follows existing user access. Listed client-portal use cases include onboarding, project tracking, document sharing, approvals, invoices and payments, support requests, and self-service resources. These are vendor descriptions, not an independent security assessment. Softr’s client-portal page and Softr’s product page describe the offering.
Softr also says it is SOC 2 Type II compliant and GDPR-ready, with data hosted in Europe. That company statement does not establish that a particular portal configuration or your organization’s use is compliant. Evaluate the security documentation and legal requirements for your own implementation.
Which alternatives fit different control needs?
The table compares the alternatives by the problem they are described as solving—not by a universal ownership score. The cited comparisons are vendor-authored or third-party pages rather than independent hands-on tests, and features and plan boundaries can change.

| Jet Admin | Portals or internal tools built on existing databases, APIs, or data warehouses | A September 26, 2026 comparison describes row-level permissions and enterprise self-hosted, on-premise, or air-gapped deployment. Confirm the required deployment option and tier with the vendor. Source |
| Budibase | Technical teams seeking an open-source builder they can self-host, especially for internal tools and dashboards | A July 16, 2026 comparison describes self-hosting and notes a steeper learning curve. Its cited strength is internal tooling, not a turnkey customer portal. Source |
| Noloco | Hosted client or team portals connected to Airtable, HubSpot, or databases | A September 2026 comparison describes granular record and field permissions and workflow automation. This is a hosted portal-builder option, not evidence of self-hosted code ownership. Source |
| Bubble | A more flexible visual builder for a custom, SaaS-like web application | An August 2026 comparison describes a hosted database and workflows, and says code export is not offered. It does not answer a self-hosting requirement. Source |
| Glide | A mobile-friendly app driven by spreadsheet or database data | An August comparison describes installable Progressive Web Apps rather than native app-store binaries. It is not the fit if native binaries are essential. Source |
| Adalo | A no-code app when publishing to the iOS and Android app stores is a real requirement | An August comparison describes native app publishing; verify current publishing capabilities and plan requirements before committing. Source |
| Pory | An Airtable-oriented website, portal, or directory | A July 2026 comparison describes Airtable-powered projects and a smaller template/ecosystem. Source |
Choose Budibase when running the software yourself matters most
Budibase is the clearest self-hosted and open-source path in this set, based on the cited July 2026 comparison. That control brings operational responsibility: your team needs enough technical capacity to deploy, maintain, and secure the software. Its strongest documented fit here is internal tools and dashboards, so validate the customer-facing portal experience you need rather than assuming it is a turnkey client portal.
Choose Jet Admin when deployment and existing backends are central
Jet Admin is the candidate to investigate when your portal must work with an existing database, API, or warehouse and enterprise deployment options matter. The comparison describes self-hosted, on-premise, and air-gapped options at enterprise level; it does not establish which plan or contractual terms apply to your case. Get those specifics in writing.
Choose Noloco for a hosted portal close to Softr’s use case
Noloco is described as serving client and team portals over existing data, with record- and field-level permissions and workflow automation. It is a reasonable hosted-builder shortlist option when those controls matter, but the cited comparison does not establish self-hosting or access to application code.
Rank #3
Choose based on the app you need, not the word “alternative”
Bubble, Glide, and Adalo address different output needs: a customizable web app, an installable PWA, or native app-store distribution, respectively. Pory is specifically oriented around Airtable-powered sites and portals. These may be useful if your project’s real requirement is app flexibility, mobile delivery, or an Airtable-centered setup—not simply replacing a client portal.

How to shortlist and compare plans
- Write down the ownership requirement. Mark data location, self-hosting, code access, portability, branded experience, or a combination. Treat each as a separate acceptance criterion.
- Map the data source. Identify whether you will connect Airtable, Sheets, HubSpot, another database, or create a new native database. Check whether the platform supports your required relationships and updates.
- Specify access rules. List which roles can view each page, record, field, and action. Confirm how linked records and uploaded files inherit access.
- Verify deployment and portability. Ask which plan includes self-hosting or other deployment options, what can be exported, and whether exports preserve relationships and files. Do not infer code access from data export.
- Model usage at your expected scale. Compare the costs of builder seats, external client accounts, record limits, automation or API usage, and any credit-based billing. Include the next tier above the plan you expect to buy.
- Match the delivered app to the requirement. Decide whether a web portal or PWA is sufficient, or whether native iOS and Android app-store publishing is required. Verify current publishing terms for any product under consideration.
- Request current details. Pricing and tier boundaries in comparisons dated July, August, and September 2026 are snapshots, not current quotes. Confirm official pricing, export, hosting, and security terms directly with each vendor.
A third-party comparison also recommends checking data connectivity, workflow depth, record and field permissions, external-user pricing, deployment options, and the tier above the advertised one. See the comparison criteria.
Test client permissions before launch
A portal’s safety depends on the data model and access configuration, not just a feature checklist. A third-party Softr/Airtable implementation guide recommends associating each row with a unique client identifier and warns against filtering only by a broad category shared by multiple clients. It also recommends testing with two separate client accounts. This is implementation guidance, not evidence of a Softr vulnerability or an independent audit. Read the implementation guide.
In a test environment, verify the following with separate client accounts and representative records:
Quick Recap
- Each client sees only records assigned to that client.
- Changing or guessing a hidden identifier cannot expose another client’s account or records.
- Uploads and linked records follow the intended restrictions.
- Staff and client roles have only the access and actions designed for them.
- Removing a user or revoking access prevents future access as expected.
