Roku is the best smart TV platform for most U.S. streaming households in 2026. Its simple app-grid home screen, broad channel ecosystem, unified search, live-TV discovery, Continue Watching, voice control, and practical private-listening options make it the easiest platform to live with.

That is a platform recommendation—not a recommendation to buy any Roku TV over any LG or Samsung TV. Choose the best panel, HDR performance, HDMI hardware, and gaming features first when picture quality matters most. You can add a Roku, Apple TV, or another streamer later if the built-in software is slow or frustrating.

Choose webOS 26 when you are already buying an LG OLED or premium LG television. Choose One UI Tizen when Samsung’s SmartThings ecosystem, Samsung TV Plus, Gaming Hub, or its published support policy matters more than a minimalist interface.

Quick verdict

Best for Platform Why it wins What to watch out for
Most streaming households Roku Simple navigation, strong search, broad app support, live-TV integration, and useful mobile features. Roku menus still contain advertising, and legacy devices eventually stop receiving current software and app versions.
LG OLED, Dolby Vision, and console gaming webOS 26 Excellent integration with LG televisions, Magic Remote pointer navigation, AirPlay, profiles, and strong gaming hardware on premium models. App availability varies by model and region, and LG’s five-year webOS Re:New policy applies only to eligible models.
Samsung ecosystem and long-term OS support One UI Tizen SmartThings, Samsung TV Plus, Gaming Hub, Samsung soundbar integration, and up to seven years of Tizen OS upgrades on new 2026 TVs. The interface is busier, sponsored content is a drawback, and network-based smart services require a Samsung account.
Privacy-conscious buyers No automatic winner Roku and Samsung document clear automatic content recognition controls, while LG lets users disable Home Promotion. Turning off ACR or personalization does not stop every form of platform, app, or advertising data collection.

The overall ranking is an editorial synthesis for a mainstream U.S. household using services such as Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Max, YouTube, YouTube TV, Hulu, live sports, and an antenna. App catalogs, free-TV services, casting features, account requirements, and television models differ by country.

What exactly are webOS, Tizen, and Roku?

These are not three operating systems that you can freely select for any television. In most cases, the platform comes bundled with the manufacturer and hardware:

  • webOS is primarily associated with LG televisions. LG also licenses webOS Hub to other brands, but the experience and available features can vary by manufacturer and model. See LG’s webOS Hub announcement.
  • Tizen is most commonly experienced through Samsung TVs. Samsung also operates a Tizen licensing program for partner manufacturers, so not every Tizen-based television necessarily has identical Samsung features. More information is available in Samsung’s licensing announcement.
  • Roku OS is built around streaming and appears in Roku-branded televisions and partner-brand Roku TVs. Roku describes the platform and its partner model on its Roku TV overview.

That distinction matters. Comparing Roku on an inexpensive LCD television with webOS on a premium LG OLED can accidentally become a comparison of two televisions rather than two interfaces. A faster processor, better remote, brighter panel, stronger speakers, and more HDMI bandwidth can make one TV feel superior even when its operating system is not your preferred platform.

What changed in 2026?

  • LG’s current platform is webOS 26. LG identifies webOS 26 as the smart platform for its 2026 television lineup.
  • Samsung uses One UI Tizen. Samsung’s 2026 interface emphasizes content discovery, Live TV, Gaming Hub, Art Store, Daily+ features, and AI-related tools.
  • Roku is in the Roku OS 15.x release line. Roku developer materials document Roku OS 15.2, but consumer rollouts are staged by device. Not every Roku TV will show the same build on the same day.
  • Samsung advertises up to seven years of Tizen OS upgrades for 2026 TVs. That is an “up to” policy—not a promise that every model receives every feature or that every third-party app remains supported for seven years.
  • LG’s webOS Re:New program provides five years of updates and version upgrades on eligible televisions. Check the exact model and region before treating this as a guarantee.
  • Google Cast is no longer categorically absent from Samsung TVs. Samsung announced support on selected 2026 Mini LED, Neo QLED, and Crystal UHD models, but availability remains model- and region-specific.
  • Roku continues to emphasize unified discovery and live TV. Its current feature set includes Continue Watching, What to Watch, a live-TV area, voice search, automatic updates, and mobile private listening.

For current platform announcements, see LG’s 2026 TV release, Samsung’s 2026 One UI Tizen announcement, and Roku’s Roku OS 15.2 developer release.

webOS 26: the best premium-TV companion

Interface and everyday use

webOS 26 is the better choice for a buyer who wants a polished interface with more features than Roku but less ecosystem clutter than Samsung. LG’s interface supports profiles for personalized apps, recommendations, and settings. Quick Cards provide shortcuts to selected functions, while compatible models add Multi View and Always Ready features.

The Magic Remote is one of webOS’s defining advantages. On compatible LG televisions, its pointer-style navigation lets you move around the screen more like a computer cursor than a traditional directional remote. Some viewers find this much faster; others prefer physical directional buttons and may accidentally move the pointer while watching.

webOS is especially compelling when it is attached to a television you already want for its picture quality. A premium LG OLED can provide excellent contrast, viewing angles, HDR performance, and gaming features, making the platform decision almost secondary.

Apps, casting, and movie support

webOS supports the major streaming services, but “available on webOS” does not mean available on every LG television. The model year, country, operating-system version, certification, and service requirements can all matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

LG is generally a comfortable choice for Apple households. LG says televisions released after 2018 running webOS 4.0 or later are AirPlay-enabled, although the exact model should still be checked in LG’s AirPlay support instructions. LG’s recent television materials also identify Google Cast support on selected products; do not generalize that support to every webOS television.

webOS is also a strong choice for viewers who specifically want Dolby Vision in a premium TV bundle. However, Dolby Vision support depends on the television, processor, firmware, app, streaming service, and title—not on the operating system alone. Verify the exact LG model and the services you use.

Live TV and free channels

LG combines installed streaming apps, antenna television, and LG Channels. The free-channel catalog and guide behavior vary by country and model. LG announced in July 2026 that LG Channels had surpassed 5,000 channels globally, but that company-wide figure is not a promise that a U.S. television receives 5,000 useful or locally relevant channels.

Gaming

webOS is a good match for console and PC gaming because it is bundled with LG televisions that often emphasize low input lag, high refresh rates, VRR, and HDMI 2.1 connectivity. Those are television hardware characteristics, not universal webOS features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, LG’s 2026 G6 supports 4K at 165Hz with VRR, NVIDIA G-SYNC, and AMD FreeSync Premium. That does not mean every LG webOS television has those capabilities. Check the model’s HDMI bandwidth, supported refresh rates, VRR range, and number of gaming-capable ports.

Advertising, privacy, and support

webOS is not ad-free. Independent testing finds advertising and suggested content in smart-TV interfaces, including webOS. LG provides a way to reduce one category of promotion:

Settings → General → Home Settings → Home Promotion → Off

Menu names can differ by webOS version and model, and this setting does not necessarily remove every recommendation or advertisement elsewhere in the system or inside streaming apps. LG’s public documentation is also less straightforward than Roku’s or Samsung’s when it comes to a single, clearly documented ACR control. Privacy-conscious buyers should inspect the privacy menu on the exact model rather than assume webOS is the most private option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

LG’s webOS Re:New program is useful for long-term ownership: LG says eligible TVs receive updates and version upgrades for five years. That is a meaningful commitment, but it does not mean every older LG receives every new webOS version.

Choose webOS 26 if: you want an LG OLED or premium LG TV, use Apple devices, care about Dolby Vision, prefer a pointer remote, or play console and PC games.

Avoid choosing it solely for: a general claim of better app support, an ad-free experience, or an update promise that you have not confirmed for the exact model.

One UI Tizen: the best Samsung ecosystem choice

Interface and account requirements

Samsung’s One UI Tizen is capable and feature-rich, but it is not the minimalist option. The home experience brings Samsung services, content recommendations, Live TV, Gaming Hub, Art Store, Daily+ tools, and AI features closer to the top level. That can be convenient if you use those services; it can feel like clutter if you only want Netflix, YouTube, and a game console.

  • The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]

  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

Samsung’s app store supports a broad selection of services, but only apps available in that store can be installed. Samsung also requires a Samsung account for network-based smart services, including streaming apps and other smart features. Without an account, Samsung says the television is limited largely to external-device connections and over-the-air television. That requirement should be part of the buying decision, especially for households that do not want another account.

Live TV, free content, and smart home

Samsung TV Plus is a major Tizen advantage. Samsung says its 2026 platform includes more than 750 subscription-free channels and more than 2,700 streaming options. These are Samsung’s figures and the available catalog varies by market, so treat them as an indication of scale rather than a guaranteed channel list.

Samsung is the strongest of these three platforms for a Samsung-centric smart home. SmartThings on compatible TVs can control compatible lights, thermostats, security cameras, appliances, and other devices. A Samsung account and internet connection are required, and the television and connected device must be compatible. Use Samsung’s SmartThings support page to check the exact setup.

Casting and voice control

Do not repeat the old blanket claim that Samsung TVs do not support Google Cast. Samsung announced Google Cast support on selected 2026 models, including selected Mini LED, Neo QLED, and Crystal UHD televisions. The feature is not universal, so check the product specification for the precise model and region before buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatible Samsung TVs can also use Bixby and Alexa. Samsung’s 2026 platform adds Vision AI-related capabilities, but AI tools vary by model, language, region, account, internet connection, and rollout. They are optional extras, not a sound reason by themselves to choose Tizen.

Gaming and longevity

Samsung’s Gaming Hub is the standout platform feature for cloud gaming. On compatible TVs, it provides access to cloud gaming without a console, subject to supported services, controllers, subscriptions, and network performance.

Samsung also bundles Tizen with TVs that may have strong gaming hardware, but the platform does not determine input lag, HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, VRR, or refresh rate. Evaluate those specifications separately.

Samsung has the clearest headline support commitment for new 2026 televisions: up to seven years of Tizen OS upgrades. The wording matters. It does not guarantee identical update timing, identical features, or uninterrupted support from every third-party app throughout that period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ads and privacy

Tizen includes sponsored content and advertising that independent testing describes as difficult to eliminate completely. Samsung separately documents privacy and ACR controls, but turning off personalization does not necessarily remove advertisements.

Samsung says ACR is optional and can be disabled. If enabled, it may collect viewing history, device identifiers, and IP address. This is a useful control, but it is not the same as eliminating all platform telemetry or data collection by individual streaming apps.

Choose One UI Tizen if: you already use Samsung phones, SmartThings, Samsung appliances, or Samsung soundbars; Samsung TV Plus is important; Gaming Hub matters; or the up-to-seven-year 2026 update policy is your top longevity consideration.

Avoid choosing it solely for: a supposedly ad-free home screen, universal Google Cast support, or the assumption that a seven-year OS policy guarantees seven years of every app and feature.

Roku OS: the best overall streaming platform

Why Roku is easiest to live with

Roku’s main advantage is restraint. The traditional app-grid home screen puts installed services in a familiar, customizable layout. The platform is easy for guests, children, and less technical family members to understand: turn on the television, select an app, and start watching.

Roku also adds discovery without requiring you to abandon the simple home screen. Its current features include a dedicated live-TV area, unified content discovery, Continue Watching, What to Watch, voice search, and voice control through compatible remotes or the Roku mobile app. Roku describes these features in its Roku TV feature guide.

Search is one of Roku’s most practical strengths. Instead of opening several apps to find a movie or show, you can search across supported services and see where it is available. Results and deep links depend on the service, region, subscription, and app integration, so unified search is helpful rather than universal.

Apps and private listening

Roku has a broad channel ecosystem and is usually the safest choice when a household uses many mainstream streaming services. The platform supports the major U.S. services, free ad-supported channels, live-TV services, sports apps, and antenna-related features. But app count is not a substitute for checking your required services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Roku’s mobile app and compatible remotes can provide private listening, allowing audio to play through connected headphones. This is especially useful for late-night viewing or households with different schedules. The exact feature depends on the Roku TV or device, remote, mobile operating system, and region.

Live TV, antenna, and cord-cutting

Roku is the best general-purpose choice for cord-cutters. Roku says its platform offers more than 500 free live channels in The Roku Channel, although the catalog changes by market. A Roku TV can combine free streaming channels with antenna channels in a live-TV guide.

There is an additional practical feature for antenna users: with a compatible Roku TV, an antenna, and a USB drive of at least 16GB, you can pause over-the-air TV for up to 90 minutes.

  • Free Content: Stream for free. Access over 1 million free movies and TV episodes from popular ad-supported streaming apps like Fire TV Channels, Tubi, and Pluto TV. Subscriptions may be required. Feature and content availability may vary.

Roku’s More Ways to Watch feature can identify a program arriving through an antenna or connected input and show streaming alternatives. This requires the Smart TV Experience and relevant automatic content recognition settings, so it is useful only if you accept that trade-off.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Casting and smart-home integration

Compatible Roku TVs support Apple AirPlay and HomeKit. Roku’s support documentation says its Select and Plus Series TVs support AirPlay and HomeKit regardless of Roku OS version, but other models should be checked individually.

Roku can also respond to Google Assistant commands such as launching apps or searching for entertainment. That is not identical to having native Google TV or universal Google Cast built into every Roku television. For a mixed Apple-and-Android household, however, Roku’s AirPlay support plus Google Assistant compatibility can be a useful compromise.

Roku is less comprehensive than Samsung as a smart-home platform. It supports HomeKit on compatible devices and has expanded into cameras, doorbells, lights, plugs, and related products, but it is best viewed as a TV-and-streaming ecosystem with smart-home extensions rather than a direct SmartThings replacement.

Ads and privacy

Roku is not ad-free. It allows users to limit selected sensitive advertising categories and hide certain home-screen ads, but those controls do not eliminate all ads, video advertising, partner-app advertising, or promotional backgrounds. Use:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Home → Settings → Privacy → Advertising → Sensitive ad content

Roku documents a separate ACR control. Its support documentation says ACR is not enabled out of the box, and the path is:

Home → Settings → Privacy → Smart TV Experience → Automatic Content Recognition

Disabling ACR stops ACR collection for connected inputs such as HDMI sources or antenna content. It does not stop Roku from collecting all information about streaming-app use, home-screen interactions, searches, ads, or usage, and individual apps have their own data practices. Read Roku’s privacy policy before treating the setting as a complete privacy solution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Updates and limitations

Roku emphasizes automatic software updates and ongoing security improvements. Roku is also transparent that discontinued legacy models can eventually stop receiving current OS updates and may remain on their final app versions. Therefore, do not buy an old clearance Roku TV assuming that its interface will be supported indefinitely.

Roku’s current 2026 release line is Roku OS 15.x, with Roku OS 15.2 documented in developer materials. Consumer rollout timing varies by device, so the version installed on a particular television may differ.

Choose Roku if: you want the simplest streaming experience, use many mainstream apps, watch free live TV or antenna channels, value unified search, or want a consistent interface across an affordable partner-brand TV.

Avoid choosing it solely for: no advertising, unlimited updates, advanced smart-home control, or high-end cloud gaming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Head-to-head comparison

Ease of use: Roku

Roku wins for straightforward navigation. webOS is more polished and Tizen is more ambitious, but both expose more services, recommendations, and settings. Roku is the better fit when multiple people need to use the TV without instructions.

App support: close, with Roku usually the safest starting point

All three platforms cover the major services, but specialist coverage and format support vary. The important questions are not how many apps a platform advertises, but whether it supports your exact services, country, TV model, subscription tier, HDR formats, Dolby Atmos, profiles, live channels, and deep links.

For concrete examples, YouTube TV supports LG smart TVs from 2017 onward, Samsung smart TVs from 2017 onward, and all Roku TVs in the U.S., subject to YouTube TV’s device requirements. Max supports LG smart TVs, Samsung Tizen TVs, and Roku devices, but its 4K and Dolby Vision support differs by device. Max lists 4K LG TVs, 4K Samsung Tizen TVs, and specific Roku 4K devices; its Dolby Vision list includes LG and supported Roku devices but does not list Samsung Tizen TVs. Check the current YouTube TV compatibility page and Max device and format list before purchasing.

Plex is another example of why platform-wide claims are unreliable. Plex supports current apps on 4K/UHD LG TVs running webOS 3.0 or newer and Samsung Tizen TVs from 2016 onward, but Plex warns that most Samsung models have secure-connection limitations with personal Plex Media Servers. See Plex’s supported TV documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Search and recommendations: Roku

Roku’s unified search and Continue Watching features are the strongest fit for a household that subscribes to several services. Samsung and LG offer increasingly sophisticated discovery, but their recommendations are more closely integrated with their own ecosystems and promotional content.

Live TV and antenna: Roku overall; Samsung for free-channel volume

Roku provides the clearest combination of antenna channels, free streaming channels, live-TV discovery, and an optional antenna pause function. Samsung TV Plus is an important advantage for viewers who want free channels, while LG Channels is also substantial. Catalog size varies by region, and free channels are not a replacement for every local broadcaster, sports network, or paid live-TV service.

Casting: model-specific rather than platform-specific

Apple households should generally start with Roku or LG because AirPlay support is well documented, while still checking the exact model. Roku’s Select and Plus Series support AirPlay and HomeKit; LG says post-2018 TVs running webOS 4.0 or later are AirPlay-enabled, subject to model verification.

Android and Google households need to inspect the specification carefully. Selected 2026 Samsung models support Google Cast, and selected LG products do as well. Roku supports Google Assistant control, but that should not be confused with universal native Google Cast. A mixed household may find Roku a practical compromise, but it is not the same as buying a Google TV.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Smart-home control: Samsung

Samsung is the clear choice if SmartThings is central to your home. LG is a strong alternative for households using Matter, ThinQ, Apple AirPlay, and Google Home-related functions on compatible models. Roku’s smart-home products are useful, but its TV platform is not as comprehensive as SmartThings.

Voice control: tie, depending on hardware and ecosystem

  • Roku: voice search and TV control through compatible voice remotes and the mobile app. Hands-free Hey Roku functions require compatible hardware and may be region-dependent.
  • webOS: LG voice control, profiles, AI Concierge, and Alexa integration are available on compatible models and in supported languages and regions.
  • Tizen: Bixby and Alexa are available on compatible TVs, with additional 2026 Vision AI features on selected models.

Voice assistants should not decide the purchase. Their usefulness depends on model, language, account, internet connection, and the services they can actually control.

Ads: no clear winner

None of these connected platforms is truly ad-free. Roku lets you limit categories and hide selected home-screen ads. LG lets you turn off Home Promotion. Samsung offers privacy controls, but independent testing finds sponsored content that cannot be completely removed. Ads inside individual streaming apps are separate from the TV platform’s own promotions.

Privacy: documented controls do not equal no tracking

Roku and Samsung offer clearly documented ACR opt-outs. Roku’s setting controls recognition of content on connected inputs; Samsung’s ACR setting can disable collection that may include viewing history, device identifiers, and IP address. LG requires more model-specific investigation. In every case, the apps you install may collect their own usage and account data.

For the least manufacturer-level telemetry, connect the TV to no network and use it as a display for an external streamer. This reduces the television’s platform data collection, but the external streamer and its apps will still have their own privacy practices.

Software longevity: Samsung on paper, external streamer in practice

Samsung has the strongest published headline commitment for a new 2026 TV: up to seven years of Tizen OS upgrades. LG’s eligible webOS Re:New models receive five years of updates and version upgrades. Roku updates automatically and regularly, but discontinued models eventually reach a final OS and app version.

These policies are not directly equivalent. An OS upgrade does not guarantee that every app developer continues supporting the television, that every feature arrives on every model, or that a device receives updates at the same time as newer models. If you plan to keep a TV for seven to ten years, choose a model with strong hardware and budget for a replaceable streamer.

Gaming: LG for console and PC hardware, Samsung for cloud gaming

LG is often the strongest platform-and-TV combination for demanding console and PC gamers, but the decisive specifications are HDMI 2.1, refresh rate, VRR, input lag, HDR performance, and the number of full-bandwidth ports. Samsung’s Gaming Hub is the better reason to choose Tizen if you want cloud gaming without a console. Roku is adequate for casual streaming but is not the platform to buy specifically for gaming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plex and local media: verify before buying

Plex users should check both the TV model and the media-server setup. App presence does not guarantee support for every codec, secure-connection mode, subtitle format, or direct-play scenario. Older LG and Samsung televisions can have OS or secure-connection limitations even when the screen itself still works.

Accessibility and household fit

Accessibility support differs by model, software version, region, and individual app. Before buying, test or verify caption controls, audio guidance, text visibility, remote ergonomics, voice input, and the accessibility tools used by everyone in the household. A platform with a simpler home screen may be more usable for one person, while another may benefit from a pointer remote or voice control.

Which platform should you buy?

Choose Roku for parents, guests, and straightforward streaming

Roku is the default recommendation when the TV needs to be immediately understandable. It is particularly suitable for households that use several major services, rely on an antenna, want free live channels, or value private listening. It is also a good way to get a consistent interface across televisions from different Roku partner brands.

Choose webOS 26 for an LG OLED or Apple-centered home

If the television you want is an LG OLED, webOS 26 is good enough that there is usually no reason to reject the TV because of its platform. Choose it when AirPlay, Magic Remote navigation, Dolby Vision, profiles, or premium LG gaming hardware matters. Confirm webOS Re:New eligibility and the exact app list for the model.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose One UI Tizen for a Samsung-centered home

Tizen makes the most sense when you already use Samsung devices or SmartThings, want Samsung TV Plus, plan to use Gaming Hub, or place high value on Samsung’s published seven-year OS-upgrade policy for 2026 models. Be comfortable with a Samsung account, recommendations, sponsored content, and a more crowded home screen.

Choose the best panel and add a streamer for movie quality

Do not select a worse television merely to obtain a preferred interface. Picture quality depends on panel type, contrast, brightness, viewing angle, backlight control, HDR performance, motion handling, processing, and screen size. Also compare HDMI 2.1 ports, VRR, refresh rate, input lag, speaker quality, remote control, and price.

An external streamer can replace the built-in interface and may offer a faster experience, newer app support, or a more desirable ecosystem. It cannot fix a weak panel, limited HDR, insufficient HDMI bandwidth, poor speakers, or hardware limitations such as inadequate refresh rate. The TV’s built-in platform may still handle settings, input switching, picture modes, and some format processing.

How to check compatibility before buying

Do this before you order: search the official support page for each service and the exact TV model—not just the platform name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Write down the exact model number, including the regional suffix.
  2. Confirm that your country is supported. App stores, channels, casting, and live-TV catalogs vary geographically.
  3. Check every essential service, such as Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Max, Hulu, YouTube TV, your local broadcaster, regional sports service, or Plex.
  4. Verify the formats you care about: 4K, HDR10, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, subtitles, profiles, and live-channel support.
  5. Check whether AirPlay, HomeKit, Google Cast, Google Assistant, Alexa, or SmartThings is supported on that exact model.
  6. If you use an antenna, confirm the guide, local-channel features, and whether antenna pause is supported.
  7. If you run Plex or another media server, check the current app’s model and secure-connection requirements.
  8. Read the update policy for the exact model and do not treat a platform-wide promise as universal.
  9. Compare the TV’s HDMI ports, gaming specifications, speakers, and panel performance independently of its operating system.

Service support can depend on country, model year, processor or memory, certification, DRM, subscription tier, HDR and audio support, and whether the app developer still supports that operating-system version. An app that exists on Roku may not be available on every Roku TV, and an app that works today on an older webOS or Tizen model may disappear after the service raises its requirements.

Useful setup and maintenance procedures

Roku

Check for a software update: Home → Settings → System → Software Update → Check Now. Most updates arrive automatically, but rollout timing depends on the device.

Add an app or channel: use the Roku Store on the TV, Roku.com, or the Roku mobile app. Adding a channel associates it with the Roku account and may add it to other linked Roku devices.

Pause antenna TV: connect an antenna and a USB drive with at least 16GB of storage to a compatible Roku TV. Roku says supported TVs can pause over-the-air television for up to 90 minutes.

Reduce selected advertising categories: go to Home → Settings → Privacy → Advertising → Sensitive ad content. This limits selected categories or hides certain home-screen ads; it does not remove all advertising.

LG webOS

Turn off Home Promotion: Settings → General → Home Settings → Home Promotion → Off. The wording varies by model and webOS version, and the setting does not remove every promotion.

Update over the internet: on webOS 22, webOS 6.0, and webOS 5.0, use Settings → All Settings → Support → Software Update → Check for Updates → Download and Install. LG also supports USB updating. The USB process requires a computer, a drive with at least 1GB of storage, a folder named exactly LG_DTV, and the model-specific firmware file. Follow LG’s current update instructions.

Enable AirPlay on a supported TV: LG’s instructions use Home → ThinQ Home Dashboard → AirPlay. AirPlay availability still depends on the model and webOS version.

Samsung One UI Tizen

Install an app: Home → Apps → Search → enter the app name → Install. A Samsung account is required for network-based smart services.

Update a 2022-or-newer model: All Settings → Support → Software Update → Update Now. Samsung also supports USB updates using model-specific firmware.

Set up SmartThings: sign in with a Samsung account, connect the TV to the internet, and verify that the TV and smart-home devices are compatible. SmartThings support differs by model and device.

Common claims that are wrong or incomplete

  • Roku updates everything forever: false. Discontinued legacy Roku models may stop receiving current OS updates and remain on their final app versions.
  • Roku has no ads: false. Roku provides ad controls, but they limit categories or selected placements rather than eliminating the advertising system.
  • webOS is ad-free: false. LG’s Home Promotion switch can reduce one type of promotion, not all ads or recommendations.
  • Samsung has no Google Cast: outdated as a blanket statement. Selected 2026 Samsung models support Google Cast, but the feature is not universal.
  • Seven years of Samsung updates means seven years of every app: not necessarily. Third-party services set their own support requirements.
  • The platform alone determines Dolby Vision: false. The TV brand, panel, processor, firmware, app, service, and title can all affect format support.
  • The fastest platform is always best: false. Performance depends on the television’s processor, memory, software build, app, network, and model tier.
  • AI features make one platform the clear winner: usually not. AI Concierge, Vision AI, assistants, and related functions can be model-, region-, language-, account-, and cloud-dependent.

Final verdict

Buy Roku for the best all-around streaming experience. It is the easiest platform for most U.S. households and the strongest choice for simple navigation, unified search, free live TV, antenna integration, and private listening.

Buy webOS 26 with an LG TV you already want for its picture or gaming performance. It is the best fit for LG OLED buyers, Apple households, Magic Remote fans, and viewers who specifically value Dolby Vision.

Buy One UI Tizen with a Samsung TV when the Samsung ecosystem or long-term support matters most. SmartThings, Samsung TV Plus, Gaming Hub, and up to seven years of Tizen OS upgrades are compelling, provided you accept a busier interface and Samsung-account requirement.

If the best picture comes with the least appealing interface, buy the better TV and add a streamer. The screen is difficult to replace; the smart platform is not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Roku better than webOS or Tizen?

For most U.S. streaming households, yes: Roku is simpler and usually the safest platform for broad mainstream app coverage, unified search, and live-TV discovery. webOS is the better fit with an LG OLED or premium LG TV, while Tizen is better for Samsung ecosystem users and buyers prioritizing the 2026 support policy.

Can an external Roku or Apple TV replace a TV’s built-in platform?

Yes. An external streamer can provide a different interface, newer apps, and a separate update cycle. It cannot improve the TV’s panel, HDR performance, HDMI bandwidth, refresh rate, or speakers, and the television’s built-in software may still control inputs and picture settings.

Which smart TV platform has the fewest ads?

None is completely ad-free when connected to the internet. Roku offers ad-preference controls, LG lets users turn off Home Promotion, and Samsung provides privacy controls, but each platform and its apps can still display promotional or advertising content.

Does Samsung support Google Cast in 2026?

Selected 2026 Samsung televisions support Google Cast, but it is not universal across all Samsung models or regions. Check the exact product specification. Roku’s Google Assistant support is useful but is not the same as universal native Google Cast.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Roku is the best smart TV platform for most people, webOS 26 is the best match for an LG premium TV, and One UI Tizen is the best match for Samsung ecosystem users or buyers who value Samsung’s up-to-seven-year 2026 OS-upgrade promise. But the platform should not outweigh a clearly better panel, HDR system, gaming specification, or price—the built-in interface can be replaced later.
