The best smart display depends on the room and the devices you already use. Choose an Echo Show if your household runs on Alexa, a Nest display if Google Home is your platform, and an iPad if you want a general-purpose tablet interface for supported HomeKit or Matter accessories. For video calls, prioritize a camera with a wide or auto-framing view. For recipes, an 8- to 10-inch screen is the practical counter-size compromise. For a shared kitchen dashboard, a wall-mounted 15- or 21-inch display is easier to read but needs substantially more space and installation.

The recommendations below separate those use cases rather than declaring one universal winner. Product features, stock, calling services, software support and accessory bundles can vary by generation and country, so confirm the exact listing before buying.

Quick picks by use case

Need Best fit Why it fits Main compromise
Alexa kitchen counter for calls and smart-home control Amazon Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) 8.7-inch display, reported 13MP camera, and support for Thread, Matter and Zigbee The reported generation has no physical camera shutter; verify the listing and plan for a separate stand if you need adjustable height
Large shared family dashboard Amazon Echo Show 15 15.6-inch full-HD screen, household calendar and to-do functions, Fire TV, and an integrated smart-home hub Wall mounting and a large footprint are unsuitable for a crowded or temporary counter
Largest wall display with calls Amazon Echo Show 21 21-inch screen, Fire TV, smart-home controls, Wi-Fi 6E and an auto-framing camera; Amazon says mounting equipment is included It is a fixed-installation product whose size can dominate a small room
Alexa recipes with moving, framed calls Amazon Echo Show 10 10.1-inch HD screen and 13MP auto-framing camera; manufacturer-described recipe steps, timers and lists It needs more counter depth than compact models, and exact services should be checked
Google Home controls without a camera Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen) Camera-less design for recipes and Google Home controls It cannot make on-device video calls
Google video calls and kitchen viewing Google Nest Hub Max 10-inch touchscreen, 6.5MP camera, 127-degree field of view and auto-framing Current official stock and support lifecycle were not established; verify availability in your market
Bedside or desk companion Amazon Echo Show 5 5.5-inch screen and 2MP camera in a small footprint The display is difficult to read from across a kitchen
Apple household wanting broader apps Apple iPad (2025) Can provide a Home app interface for supported HomeKit or Matter devices while remaining a normal tablet It is not a dedicated always-ready smart display and does not provide the same built-in assistant experience

Choose the household ecosystem first

A smart display is both a screen and a controller. Its usefulness depends less on the panel alone than on whether it can see the lights, cameras, plugs, locks and routines already installed in your home.

Alexa homes

Choose an Echo Show when Alexa already runs your voice routines or your accessories are configured for Alexa. The Echo Show 8 (4th Gen), Echo Show 10, Echo Show 15 and Echo Show 21 are the Alexa-family options documented here. Their shared platform makes household calendars, lists, timers, compatible camera feeds and smart-home controls easier to keep in one place. Do not assume that every Echo Show includes the same radio protocols or hub functions: the reported Thread, Matter and Zigbee support applies to the Echo Show 8 (4th Gen), not automatically to every model.

#1 Best Overall
Amazon Echo Show 5 (newest model), Smart display, Designed for Alexa+, 2x the bass and clearer sound, Charcoal
  • Alexa can show you more - Echo Show 5 includes a 5.5” display so you can see news and weather at a glance, make video calls, view compatible cameras, stream music and shows, and more.
  • Small size, bigger sound – Stream your favorite music, shows, podcasts, and more from providers like Amazon Music, Spotify, and Prime Video—now with deeper bass and clearer vocals. Includes a 5.5" display so you can view shows, song titles, and more at a glance.
  • Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart devices like lights and thermostats, even while you're away.
  • See more with the built-in camera – Check in on your family, pets, and more using the built-in camera. Drop in on your home when you're out or view the front door from your Echo Show 5 with compatible video doorbells.
  • See your photos on display – When not in use, set the background to a rotating slideshow of your favorite photos. Invite family and friends to share photos to your Echo Show. Prime members also get unlimited cloud photo storage.

Google Home households

A Nest display is the more natural choice when your routines and accessories live in Google Home. The Nest Hub (2nd Gen) is the camera-less option for people who want a control panel and recipe screen without an on-device camera. The Nest Hub Max adds a camera and auto-framing for calls, but its current availability and support status need checking before purchase.

Apple households

The 2025 iPad is a sidebar option rather than a direct smart-display equivalent. Tom’s Guide reports that it can act as a Home app interface for supported HomeKit or Matter devices. You gain the flexibility of a full tablet, but you must supply the stand, charging arrangement and any preferred voice-control setup; it is not a purpose-built, always-on kitchen dashboard.

Match screen size to the room

Screen size determines whether information is glanceable or requires walking up to the device. It also determines how intrusive the display is in the room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • 5- to 6-inch class: Suitable for a bedside table or desk. A 5.5-inch Echo Show 5 can handle short interactions and calls, but recipe text viewed from several feet away will be uncomfortable.
  • 8- to 10-inch class: The practical counter and desk range. An 8.7-inch Echo Show 8, 10.1-inch Echo Show 10 or 10-inch Nest Hub Max can show ingredients, timers and call participants without consuming an entire work surface.
  • 15- to 21-inch class: Best for a shared dashboard or wall-mounted kitchen. The Echo Show 15 and 21 can display calendars, lists and controls where several people can see them, but measure the wall, viewing distance and power route before ordering.

A larger panel does not automatically improve calls. Camera position, field of view, auto-framing and the services supported by the platform matter just as much.

Best smart displays for video calls

What to check before buying

  1. Camera presence: A camera-less display cannot make an on-device video call. The Nest Hub (2nd Gen) is deliberately in this category.
  2. Framing: Auto-framing or a wide field of view helps when people move around a kitchen. The Echo Show 10 and Echo Show 21 are documented with auto-framing cameras; the Nest Hub Max is documented with a 127-degree field of view and auto-framing.
  3. Resolution: Higher resolution can preserve detail, but it does not compensate for poor lighting or an awkward camera height. The documented cameras range from 2MP on the Echo Show 5 to 13MP on the Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) and Echo Show 10, 6.5MP on the Nest Hub Max and an unspecified camera on the Echo Show 21 description.
  4. Calling service: Confirm that the people you call use a service supported by the exact display and region. Service availability can change independently of the hardware.
  5. Privacy controls: Check whether the control is physical and whether it disables the camera electronically or only covers it. The reported Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) lacks a physical camera shutter, while the Nest Hub (2nd Gen) has no camera to disable.

Best Alexa call options

The Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) is the balanced counter choice: its reported 13MP camera and 8.7-inch screen keep both the caller and the controls visible without the footprint of a wall dashboard. The absent physical shutter is a meaningful privacy trade-off if the display will face a private area.

The Echo Show 10 is preferable when people move while talking or cooking. Its 13MP auto-framing camera is paired with a 10.1-inch HD screen, and the manufacturer positions it for hands-free kitchen interactions. Allow clearance for its larger counter footprint and confirm that the calling service you use is supported.

The Echo Show 21 is the size-led option. Its auto-framing camera, 21-inch wall display and Wi-Fi 6E suit a family kitchen where several people need to see a call or dashboard. It is a poor fit if you rent, cannot route power cleanly or do not have a wall that can accommodate the panel.

Google call option

The Nest Hub Max combines a 10-inch touchscreen with a 6.5MP camera, a 127-degree field of view and auto-framing, making it the relevant Google choice for calls in a kitchen or shared room. Because current official stock and support lifecycle were not established in the available evidence, verify that it is sold and supported in your country before treating it as a current purchase.

Best smart displays for recipes and kitchen timers

Hands-free cooking has three practical requirements: text large enough to read from your work surface, voice controls that let you advance or repeat steps with wet hands, and timers or lists that do not disappear when another request is made.

Counter-size recommendation

The Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) is the sensible Alexa counter compromise. Its reported 8.7-inch display is large enough for a recipe card and timers while leaving more workspace than a 15- or 21-inch wall display. A compatible stand may be sold separately, and compatibility varies by generation, so check the model number before adding one.

Moving around the kitchen

The Echo Show 10 gives you a larger 10.1-inch HD screen and a 13MP auto-framing camera. Amazon describes hands-free recipe steps, timers and lists as kitchen uses. It is useful when the cook alternates between the sink, prep area and hob, but the rotating or larger hardware needs a stable, unobstructed location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Large shared recipe and family board

The Echo Show 15 is easier for multiple people to read. Its 15.6-inch full-HD display can combine recipes with a household calendar and to-do functions, while Fire TV and an integrated smart-home hub add non-cooking uses. Wall mounting is a commitment: check the wall surface, stud or anchor requirements, power outlet position and viewing angle before installation.

  • 34" UltraWide 21:9 Panoramic Cinema - This Smart Monitor's 34" ultrawide QHD (3440x1440) with a 21:9 aspect ratio offers a 34% wider view than a 16:9 display. And the monitor's sweeping 1800R cruve envelops you as if you were at the movies.
  • 99% sRGB color gamut - Immerse yourself in a world of brilliant color from HDR10 that helps enhance picture quality and up to 99% sRGB color gamut expression to make games visually pop.

The Echo Show 21 follows the same shared-dashboard idea at 21 inches. Choose it only when the extra size solves a real visibility problem, because its installation and visual presence are substantially greater.

Camera-free recipe display

The Nest Hub (2nd Gen) is appropriate when you want Google Home controls and recipe viewing but do not want a camera in the kitchen. It cannot provide on-device video calls, so do not select it if calls are part of the requirement.

Using a display to control a smart home

A display is most useful when it exposes the controls you actually need at the moment you need them: turning off downstairs lights, checking a compatible camera feed, running a bedtime routine or changing a thermostat without opening a phone app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check protocols and device support

Make a list of the devices you intend to control and identify their platform and protocol. The Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) is reported to support Thread, Matter and Zigbee, but that support should not be generalized to other Echo Show generations. Google Home and Apple Home support also depend on the accessory, bridge and software version. A device advertised as Matter-compatible still needs to be commissioned into the correct ecosystem and may expose only the functions its manufacturer implemented.

Use camera feeds carefully

A compatible security camera can make a display useful at the front door, nursery or kitchen. Confirm that the camera brand, account region and display platform support live viewing; compatibility is not universal. Place the display so visitors or passers-by cannot casually see a sensitive feed.

Plan household accounts and permissions

Shared displays can reveal calendars, lists, reminders and camera feeds. Decide which household account owns the device, which adults can change routines and whether children should have access to purchases or cameras. Use individual voice profiles or account restrictions where the platform offers them, and review permissions after adding a new accessory.

  • Best room: Kitchen counter, desk or small shared room.

  • Watch for: No physical camera shutter is reported, and a compatible stand may be an extra purchase.

Amazon Echo Show 10

  • Documented hardware: 10.1-inch HD screen and 13MP auto-framing camera.
  • Best room: Kitchen or larger desk where the screen can remain visible as you move.
  • Choose it when: Recipe steps, timers, lists and moving video-call participants are central.
  • Watch for: Measure the counter and verify calling and recipe services for your region.

Amazon Echo Show 15

  • Documented hardware and software: 15.6-inch full-HD display, Alexa, Fire TV, household calendar and to-do functions, plus an integrated smart-home hub.
  • Best room: Shared kitchen, hallway or family command center.
  • Choose it when: Visibility for several people matters more than portability.
  • Watch for: Wall mounting and the larger footprint; installation and power placement are part of the purchase decision.

Amazon Echo Show 21

  • Documented hardware and software: 21-inch wall-mountable display, Fire TV, smart-home controls, Wi-Fi 6E and an auto-framing camera.
  • Best room: Large kitchen or family area with a suitable wall.
  • Choose it when: You need the biggest documented screen for calls and a household dashboard.
  • Watch for: Fixed installation, room scale and sight lines. Amazon says wall-mounting equipment is included, but confirm the current package.

Amazon Echo Show 5

  • Documented hardware: 5.5-inch screen and 2MP camera.
  • Best room: Bedside table or desk.
  • Choose it when: You need a small secondary display for short calls or compatible camera viewing.
  • Watch for: Its size is a poor match for recipes viewed across a kitchen.

Google Nest Hub Max

  • Documented hardware: 10-inch touchscreen, 6.5MP camera, 127-degree field of view and auto-framing.
  • Best room: Google Home kitchen or shared room where calls and controls are both needed.
  • Choose it when: Google is already your household platform and you want a camera-equipped display.
  • Watch for: Verify current stock and support in your target market before purchase.

Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen)

  • Documented design: Camera-less Google display.
  • Best room: Kitchen counter, bedside table or desk where privacy is a priority.
  • Choose it when: Recipes and Google Home controls matter, but video calls do not.
  • Watch for: No camera means no on-device video calls.

Apple iPad (2025)

  • Documented role: A tablet that can serve as a Home app interface for supported HomeKit or Matter devices.
  • Best room: Any room where you also want ordinary tablet apps.
  • Choose it when: Flexibility and Apple ecosystem integration outweigh the convenience of a dedicated always-on display.
  • Watch for: You need to arrange a stand, charging and screen-wake behavior yourself.

Installation and setup checklist

  1. Inventory your ecosystem: Write down whether your routines use Alexa, Google Home or Apple Home, then list the lights, cameras, sensors and locks you expect to control.
  2. Measure the location: Record counter depth, wall width, outlet position and the distance from the normal cooking or seating position. Include clearance for cables, stands and camera sight lines.
  3. Decide on camera policy: Choose a camera-equipped model only if calls or camera feeds justify it. If privacy is the priority, choose a camera-less display or a model with a physical control you are comfortable using.
  4. Verify protocols for the exact generation: Check the manufacturer’s listing for Matter, Thread, Zigbee, Wi-Fi and any required bridge. Do not transfer the Echo Show 8 (4th Gen)’s documented protocol support to another Echo model.
  5. Confirm services: Check the recipe source, music or video service, camera feed and calling service you actually use. Platform support differs by model and region.
  6. Install safely: For a wall model, use the supplied hardware as directed, secure it to an appropriate surface and keep the power cable away from heat and water. For a counter model, use a stable stand and leave ventilation and camera clearance.
  7. Configure household access: Sign in to the intended household account, add devices, create only the routines you need and review calendar, list and camera permissions.
  8. Test from the real position: Start a call from the chair or prep area, read a recipe without leaning forward, run a timer and control a light. Relocate the display if the camera crops people or text is hard to read.

Common pitfalls and fixes

The camera shows only one person

Move the display farther back, raise it to face level or choose a model with auto-framing or a wider field of view. The Nest Hub Max’s documented 127-degree view and the auto-framing descriptions for the Echo Show 10 and 21 address movement better than a small fixed camera, but room lighting and placement still matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recipe text is too small

Use an 8- to 10-inch counter display at a closer, unobstructed angle, or move to a 15- or 21-inch wall display when several cooks need to read it. A 5.5-inch bedside model is not a kitchen recipe solution.

Accessories appear in the app but cannot be controlled

Check that the accessory is compatible with the display’s ecosystem, that any required bridge is online and that it is assigned to the correct household or room. Recheck support for the exact display generation rather than relying on the product family name.

The display is intrusive in a small room

Downsize to the Echo Show 5 or an 8- to 10-inch model, or use a tablet that can be put away. A 15- or 21-inch panel is valuable only when its visibility justifies the wall space.

A supposedly current model is unavailable

Availability and support change by country and date. This is especially important for the Nest Hub Max: verify an official listing and supported software before treating it as a current purchase. If it is unavailable, select another display within the same ecosystem rather than assuming accessories or services will transfer.
