The best smart dehumidifier is the one that matches your room’s moisture load, reaches your target relative humidity (RH), and gives you useful remote control—not merely a Wi‑Fi logo. For a typical damp basement, large office, or living area, the 50-pint Frigidaire FHDD5034Y1 is the most complete documented app-connected option here: its app handles power, humidity, schedules, and fan speed. Choose the pump-equipped FHDP5033Y1 when condensate must travel upward to a sink or window. For a smaller room, Tom’s Guide’s 2026 hands-on coverage identifies the Midea 20-Pint Cube as a compact smart alternative, with app alerts and humidity readings.

These are evidence-based candidates, not personal test winners. Confirm the exact model, certification, temperature rating, included fittings, and current availability before buying.

What makes a dehumidifier genuinely smart?

A connected dehumidifier should let you manage moisture without walking to the appliance. The useful question is not “Does it have Wi‑Fi?” but “Which settings can I change remotely, and how precisely?” A basic connected model may offer only on/off control, while a better one exposes the humidistat target, fan speed, schedules, and status alerts.

Remote controls worth paying for

  • Power: Start or stop drying when you are away.
  • Humidity target: Set the desired RH rather than running continuously.
  • Fan speed: Select a quieter setting for occupied rooms or a stronger setting when drying is urgent.
  • Schedules: Run the unit during the dampest hours, or before an office opens.
  • Status and alerts: Know when the bucket is full or when the room has reached its target.

Frigidaire lists all five functions—remote power, humidity management, schedules, fan-speed control, and status management—for the FHDD5034Y1 app. The manufacturer also lists Alexa and Google Home support. App capabilities can vary by model revision and software, so check the current product page and manual rather than assuming every Wi‑Fi model has the same controls.

Set a realistic RH target

ENERGY STAR’s general guidance places optimum building RH at 30% to 50%. In a cold climate during the heating season, it recommends 30% to 40% to reduce window condensation. A built-in humidistat cycles the compressor and fan to maintain the selected setpoint; it should not need to run continuously once the room is dry.

Use a separate digital hygrometer if you need an independent reading, especially when the appliance does not show RH or its sensor is positioned differently from the area you care about. A reading near the unit can differ from one in a cold corner, closet, or exterior-wall area.

Size by pints per day, room area, and dampness

Capacity is normally expressed as pints of water removed in 24 hours. The number is meaningful only alongside the room’s area and moisture conditions. A leaky basement, a recently flooded room, and a mildly humid bedroom can have very different loads even when their floor areas match.

Illustrative capacity guidance

GE’s sizing guide gives the following example areas for 22-, 35-, and 50-pint units. These are estimates for the stated dampness categories, not universal promises for every building.

Dampness condition 22-pint example 35-pint example 50-pint example
Mildly damp Not stated in the cited guide Not stated in the cited guide Not stated in the cited guide
Slightly damp Not stated in the cited guide Not stated in the cited guide Not stated in the cited guide
Very damp 800 sq ft 1,400 sq ft 2,000 sq ft
Wet 500 sq ft 1,000 sq ft 1,500 sq ft

GE also warns that oversizing can make a unit cycle more frequently and may reduce performance. Do not automatically buy the largest capacity for a small room: compare the room’s measured RH, moisture source, temperature, and drainage plan with the manufacturer’s chart.

A practical sizing process

  1. Measure the space. Multiply length by width for floor area; include connected areas only when air can move freely between them.
  2. Measure RH at several times. Record readings after waking, after showers or laundry, and during the dampest weather.
  3. Identify the moisture source. Look for groundwater seepage, wet foundations, drying laundry, unvented bathrooms, or condensation on cold surfaces.
  4. Use the maker’s table as a starting point. Select the capacity range that covers both area and dampness, then account for low temperature and drainage.
  5. Recheck after installation. If RH remains above your target while the unit runs correctly, the room may need a larger unit, better air sealing, or moisture-source repairs.

Frigidaire FHDD5034Y1: the full-featured 50-pint choice

The FHDD5034Y1 is the strongest documented fit when you want a large-capacity portable unit and fine-grained remote control. Its app can change the humidity setting, fan speed, and operating schedule in addition to power. That combination addresses the common complaint that a “smart” appliance cannot actually be tuned from the phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it suits homes and offices

  • Fifty-pint capacity is appropriate for larger or wetter spaces when the sizing table supports it.
  • Continuous-drain capability can eliminate repeated bucket emptying when a gravity drain is available.
  • The full-bucket shutoff protects against overflow when the bucket is used.
  • Alexa and Google Home support can fit an existing home-automation setup.
  • The listed 41°F operating floor is useful for cool basements, provided the room stays within the manual’s conditions.

There is no documented noise figure in the cited manufacturer information, so do not assume it is quieter than a smaller unit. Place it away from desks and beds if sound is critical, and seek a current specification or retailer measurement before purchase.

Frigidaire FHDP5033Y1: choose it when drainage must go uphill

The FHDP5033Y1 has the same 50-pint class and Wi‑Fi control concept but adds a built-in condensate pump. The pump can move water upward into a sink or through a window, solving layouts where a floor drain is unavailable and a gravity hose cannot maintain a continuous downward slope.

When the pump is worth the extra complexity

  • The dehumidifier sits below the nearest sink or drain.
  • You cannot route a hose continuously downhill.
  • You want to avoid lifting a full bucket in a basement or utility room.

A pump does not make placement arbitrary. Follow the current manual for maximum lift, hose routing, priming, and outlet requirements. Verify that the destination can accept the water and that the hose cannot kink or disconnect.

Midea 20-Pint Cube: investigate it for compact rooms

Tom’s Guide’s 2026 hands-on coverage describes the Midea 20-Pint Cube as a compact smart option. In that testing, the app reported a full tank, displayed real-time room humidity, and provided app controls. The publication measured roughly 55 dB during its test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those findings make it worth investigating for a bedroom, office, or other smaller space where a 50-pint appliance would be excessive. They do not establish the exact functions of every regional or revised variant. Confirm the model number, drainage method, temperature range, and certification on the current manufacturer documentation before treating the review’s features as guaranteed.

Efficiency: compare IEF, not marketing adjectives

ENERGY STAR uses integrated energy factor (IEF), measured as liters of water removed per kilowatt-hour. A higher IEF generally indicates better efficiency, but portable units should be compared within the same capacity class and under comparable test conditions. ENERGY STAR’s Version 6 portable-dehumidifier thresholds vary by product capacity.

ENERGY STAR’s 2025 program messaging estimates that certified units use 15% less energy than similarly sized conventional units, save approximately $100 over their lifetime, and avoid approximately 1,200 pounds of greenhouse-gas emissions. Those are program estimates, not guarantees for an individual household. A separate ENERGY STAR consumer page says certified dehumidifiers are 20% more efficient than non-certified models and identifies October 1, 2025 as the current specification effective date. The 15% and 20% figures use different comparison language; they should not be combined into one universal percentage.

The cited listings identify ENERGY STAR certification for both Frigidaire candidates. They do not provide their IEF values, so a precise efficiency ranking between them is not established here. Look for the IEF on the current product label or certification database when operating cost is a deciding factor.

Drainage: the feature that determines whether “smart” stays convenient

Bucket operation

A bucket is the simplest setup, but it requires manual emptying. The FHDD5034Y1 listing specifies automatic shutoff when the bucket is full. Use the app or the appliance indicator to check status if available, and keep the unit level so the bucket sensor works correctly.

Gravity hose

Continuous drainage is convenient only when the hose can descend safely to an approved drain. Route it so it cannot cross electrical connections, create a trip hazard, or develop a low spot that holds water. ENERGY STAR specifically cautions that a drain hose must be routed safely and kept clear of electrical connections. Check the exact manual to see whether a hose is included, what diameter is required, and whether an adapter is needed.

Pumped drainage

The FHDP5033Y1’s built-in pump is intended for upward discharge to a sink or window outlet. Measure the vertical rise and horizontal run before buying, then verify the manual’s limits. Secure the outlet end so pressure cannot pop it out of the sink, and inspect the hose periodically for kinks or blockage.

Operating in cool rooms

ENERGY STAR warns that coils can frost below 65°F and recommends considering a model specified for lower-temperature use. Frigidaire lists operation down to 41°F for both cited Wi‑Fi models. That is a stated operating limit, not a promise of maximum water removal at 41°F; extraction generally slows as air gets colder and drier.

If frost appears, stop treating it as a capacity problem. Check that the room is within the model’s temperature range, the air filter and intake are clear, and the unit has room for airflow. Persistent icing in an approved temperature range warrants service or a manufacturer-approved troubleshooting procedure.

Set up a connected dehumidifier correctly

  1. Choose the location. Place the unit on a level, stable surface with the clearances specified in its manual. Keep air intake and exhaust paths open.
  2. Confirm the power source. Use the required outlet and avoid extension arrangements not approved by the manufacturer.
  3. Select drainage. Install the bucket, gravity hose, or pump hose according to the model’s instructions. Check for leaks before leaving the appliance unattended.
  4. Record a baseline RH. Use the appliance display or a separate hygrometer before changing settings.
  5. Connect Wi‑Fi. Use the manufacturer’s current app and follow its pairing flow. Keep the phone and appliance on the network band and permissions the app requires.
  6. Set the RH target. Start within ENERGY STAR’s 30%–50% general range, using 30%–40% in a cold heating season when window condensation is a concern.
  7. Choose fan behavior. Use a lower speed for occupied rooms when the model permits remote fan control; use a higher speed when the room is recovering from a moisture event.
  8. Create a schedule. Program the hours that match your moisture pattern, then verify that the appliance actually starts and stops at the scheduled times.
  9. Test alerts and drainage. Confirm that a full-bucket notification appears if the model supports it, and inspect the drain path after several hours of operation.

Scheduling ideas that make app control useful

Basement

Schedule drying during the period when basement RH usually rises, then maintain the target instead of running at maximum continuously. If the basement is cold, use a model with a documented low-temperature range.

Home office

Run a stronger fan setting before working hours and a quieter setting while occupied, if the app exposes fan speed. Keep the unit far enough from the desk that airflow and compressor cycling do not disrupt calls.

Laundry area

Start a temporary high-demand schedule around clothes drying, and use continuous drainage when a safe drain is nearby. Do not place the appliance where splashing water can reach its electrical components.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Unoccupied property

Remote status is valuable only if drainage is dependable. A pump or properly installed gravity hose reduces the need for visits, but inspect the setup after installation and after any plumbing change.

Troubleshooting common failures

The room is still above the target RH

  • Confirm the hygrometer reading in another part of the room.
  • Check that doors, windows, and obvious moisture sources are not continuously adding humid air.
  • Verify that the capacity matches the room’s area and dampness rather than relying on floor area alone.
  • Inspect the filter, intake, and exhaust for obstruction.
  • In a cold room, check for frost and confirm that the temperature is within the model’s specification.

The app cannot change a setting

  • Check whether the model exposes that function; a Wi‑Fi connection does not guarantee humidity or fan-speed control.
  • Confirm that the appliance is online and that the app is signed into the correct account.
  • Use the appliance’s physical controls to establish a safe temporary setting while resolving connectivity.

The hose does not drain

  • Make sure a gravity hose slopes continuously downward.
  • Remove kinks, blocked ends, and low spots that trap water.
  • For a pump model, verify the lift, outlet position, and pump instructions.
  • Keep the hose away from electrical connections and check every joint for leaks.

The unit is noisy

Noise data is not published for the two Frigidaire candidates in the cited material. The Midea figure of about 55 dB comes from Tom’s Guide’s test conditions. If sound is decisive, seek a current measured specification and consider placement, fan speed, and compressor cycling rather than comparing a single unqualified number.

Portable unit or whole-home system?

A portable smart dehumidifier is designed for one room or a connected area. ENERGY STAR says a whole-home dehumidifier may be appropriate when a relatively well-sealed home in a humid climate has central air conditioning yet remains above 55% RH. Whole-home equipment is a separate installation project: sizing, duct integration, condensate disposal, electrical work, and commissioning deserve professional help.

Do not try to solve persistent whole-house humidity by placing several portable units without addressing leaks, ventilation, or HVAC operation. Use room-level equipment when the problem is localized; investigate whole-home design when RH stays high across the building.

Buyer’s checklist

  • Capacity: Compare pints per day with measured area and dampness.
  • Humidity control: Confirm that the app can set RH, not just switch power.
  • Scheduling: Check whether schedules support the hours and repeat pattern you need.
  • Fan control: Verify remote fan-speed options if quiet operation matters.
  • Drainage: Choose bucket, gravity hose, or pump based on the room’s plumbing.
  • Safety: Check hose routing, electrical clearances, and full-bucket behavior.
  • Efficiency: Compare IEF and certification status for the exact model and capacity.
  • Temperature: Confirm the minimum operating temperature for basements or other cool spaces.
  • Noise: Require a documented measurement when the unit will sit near a bed or desk.
  • Verification: Recheck model number, manual, stock, included accessories, and regional app support before ordering.

Which one should you choose?

Choose the FHDD5034Y1 when you need a documented 50-pint appliance with broad app control, scheduling, continuous drainage, and voice-assistant support. Choose the FHDP5033Y1 when the deciding constraint is moving condensate uphill. Investigate the Midea 20-Pint Cube for a smaller room where a compact form and app alerts are more appropriate, while treating the reported 55 dB result and feature set as review-specific findings.

Whichever model you select, begin with RH and dampness measurements, plan drainage before installation, and verify the exact current specifications. Smart controls are valuable only after the underlying capacity, temperature range, and water-removal path fit the room.
