For most compact ESP32 builds, start with the interface and layout you need rather than the diagonal measurement alone. A 1.54-inch, 200 × 200 SPI module is a sensible square dashboard or status display; a 2.9-inch, 296 × 128 module is better for a wider text layout or chart. Before ordering, verify the panel revision, controller example, supply range, logic levels, refresh mode and whether the listing includes a driver board.

The recommendations below are based on manufacturer documentation. The listed refresh times, power figures and operating limits are model specifications, not independent comparative test results.

Quick picks for common ESP32 projects

Candidate Resolution and shape Color Interface Important checks
Waveshare 1.54-inch monochrome e-Paper Module 200 × 200; square; 27.6 × 27.6 mm active area Black and white SPI Rated screen input 2.3–3.6 V; voltage should not fall below 2.5 V; V1 and V2 demos differ
Waveshare 1.54-inch e-Paper Module (B) 200 × 200; square Black, white and red SPI Documentation lists 3.3 V/5 V conditions; 14-second refresh; 26.4 mW typical refresh power; 0–40 °C operating range
Waveshare 2.9-inch e-Paper Module 296 × 128; landscape-like Model-dependent SPI Use the demo for the marked revision; V3 hardware structure/interface is documented as compatible with V2
Waveshare ESP32-S3-ePaper-1.54 1.54-inch, 200 × 200 Model-dependent Integrated ESP32-S3 board V2 began phasing in November 2025; V1 and V2 example programs are not interchangeable
Waveshare ESP32-S3-ePaper-1.54G 1.54-inch, 200 × 200 Red, yellow, black and white SPI on an integrated ESP32-S3 product 20-second full refresh and 15-second fast refresh are vendor figures for this model

A separate Waveshare E-Paper ESP32 Driver Board supports 3-wire and 4-wire SPI and documents an operating-current range of 50–150 mA for the board. That is a whole-board figure, not a display-only consumption number. Good Display also describes an ESP32-M1 driver board with SPI e-paper support, an Arduino library, sample code and an ESP32 development environment. In either case, confirm the exact panel and controller before assuming compatibility.

Choose the layout before the diagonal size

Square 1.54-inch screens

A 200 × 200 panel gives equal width and height in pixels. That suits a compact clock, sensor tile, icon grid, QR-style pattern or a page that changes between several square screens. The monochrome module’s active display area is 27.6 × 27.6 mm. Its screen outline is 37.32 × 31.8 × 1.05 mm, so leave room for the complete module rather than designing around the active pixels alone.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Square resolution does not automatically mean more usable information. Large type, icons and generous spacing can make a 200 × 200 display easier to read than a wider panel with smaller text. Measure the enclosure opening and account for the breakout board, connector and cable bend radius.

Wider 2.9-inch screens

The documented 2.9-inch module is 296 × 128 pixels. Its landscape-like aspect ratio gives you a long status line, a multi-column sensor view or a small time-series chart without rotating the display. It is not simply a larger version of the 1.54-inch panel: its pixel geometry changes the user interface, font choices and enclosure shape.

Compare active area and pixel dimensions together. A larger diagonal can still be unsuitable if the content is square, while a wide display can reduce the need to scroll or split a row of values across pages.

Understand what the SPI connection requires

The cited modules use SPI in their ESP32 examples, but “SPI” does not mean every board can be wired identically. The display documentation and driver board determine the supply voltage, signal levels, control signals and pin assignment.

Signals and GPIO planning

Reserve the ESP32 GPIOs required by the selected board for SPI data and clock plus chip-select, reset, busy and data-command control where the design exposes them. A board may use 3-wire or 4-wire SPI; the Waveshare E-Paper ESP32 Driver Board documents support for both. Check the board schematic or pin table instead of copying a pin map from a different revision.

Also check which ESP32 pins are already connected to flash, PSRAM, boot strapping, a USB interface or other peripherals on your particular development board. The screen may be electrically suitable while the chosen pins are unavailable or inconvenient.

Supply voltage is not the same as logic-level tolerance

The 1.54-inch monochrome module manual lists a rated screen input of 2.3–3.6 V and cautions that voltage below 2.5 V can affect display quality. Keep the panel within that documented range and verify whether the breakout includes regulation or level conversion.

The black/white/red 1.54-inch module documentation lists 3.3 V/5 V conditions, but read whether each statement applies to the driver board, the panel input or a particular connection. A board that accepts a 5 V supply is not proof that its panel or ESP32 signal pins accept 5 V logic. If the documentation does not clearly specify the signal level, do not connect 5 V GPIO signals directly to an ESP32.

What should be in the purchase

  • Confirm whether you are buying a bare panel, a panel on a driver breakout or a complete ESP32 board.
  • Check that the connector or header is fitted as expected and that any required cable is included.
  • Verify the controller identifier and hardware revision printed on the board or listing.
  • Confirm that the ESP32 library or vendor demo names that controller and revision explicitly.

Refresh behavior determines how interactive the project can feel

E-paper is suited to information that changes occasionally, not to a continuously animated user interface. Full updates can take seconds, and color layers generally require more time than a monochrome update. Design the firmware so the display is not refreshed after every sensor sample or button event.

Model-specific timings

Model Documented timing or power How to interpret it
1.54-inch black/white/red module (B) 14-second refresh; 26.4 mW typical refresh power Vendor figures for the documented module; the refresh mode is not a universal figure for every 1.54-inch color panel
ESP32-S3-ePaper-1.54G 20-second full refresh; 15-second fast refresh Both numbers are Waveshare specifications for this four-color product; “fast” is a vendor-defined mode

Ask whether a quoted time refers to a full refresh, a partial refresh or a vendor-defined fast mode. A partial update may leave ghosting or require periodic full refreshes; do not assume that a fast figure provides the same image quality as a full update.

Monochrome versus accent color

Choose monochrome when you need the simplest, quickest status screen and the highest contrast from a two-color palette. Choose an accent-color panel when red or another color carries meaning such as an alarm, but budget for the documented refresh behavior and accept that color updates may be slower.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 1.54-inch black/white/red module is specified for 0–40 °C operation. That is the stated operating range for that model, not a safe range to apply to every e-paper panel. Check the exact manual if the project will be outdoors, in a refrigerator, near a heater or in an unconditioned enclosure.

Buy the exact hardware revision supported by the example code

Revision mismatches are a common reason for a blank panel even when the wiring appears correct. The 1.54-inch module has separate V1 and V2 demo guidance. The 2.9-inch documentation discusses V1, V2 and V3 and says the V3 hardware structure and interface are compatible with V2 while still directing users to the demo appropriate to the version label.

The integrated ESP32-S3-ePaper-1.54 is a separate revision-sensitive product. Its documentation says V2 began phasing in November 2025 and that V1 and V2 example programs are not interchangeable. Treat “same size” as insufficient evidence: controller initialization, waveform data, pin assignments or board peripherals can differ.

Revision check before you install software

  1. Photograph or record the revision mark on the panel or board as soon as it arrives.
  2. Open the vendor documentation for that exact product name and revision.
  3. Use the matching demo or library example first, with no application changes.
  4. Only after the known-good example works should you change fonts, layout, update mode or power control.

Detailed buying guidance for each candidate

1.54-inch monochrome module: compact and predictable

This is the most straightforward choice when a square 200 × 200 canvas is enough and you do not need an accent color. It uses SPI, has a small active area and has clearly stated low-voltage input limits. The main risks are buying a V1/V2 mismatch, overlooking the full breakout dimensions or powering the screen below the documented quality threshold.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Use it for a small clock, a room-status badge, a mailbox indicator or a sensor page that changes every few minutes. It is less suitable for a dashboard that must redraw several times per second.

1.54-inch black/white/red module (B): accent color with slower updates

The B model keeps the 200 × 200 square format but adds red. Its documentation gives a 14-second refresh time, 26.4 mW typical refresh power and a 0–40 °C operating range. Those figures help with power and user-interface planning, but they do not establish how every color panel performs.

Use red sparingly for alerts, thresholds or headings. If every screen element changes frequently, the color capability will not compensate for the wait between full updates.

2.9-inch module: more horizontal content

The 296 × 128 layout is the better fit for a row of measurements, a weather strip, a timetable or a chart with a visible time axis. Verify whether your chosen listing is V1, V2 or V3 and use the corresponding ESP32/8266 guidance. Do not select it solely because its diagonal is larger; compare the available width with the actual labels and font sizes in your interface.

ESP32-S3-ePaper-1.54: fewer interconnects, more board-specific checks

An integrated board combines an ESP32-S3 with a 1.54-inch, 200 × 200 display. It can reduce external wiring and eliminate the need to choose a separate ESP32 development board and display breakout. The trade-off is that you must follow the board’s own revision, USB, power and example-code documentation. The V1/V2 incompatibility warning is especially important for units transitioning to V2 from November 2025.

ESP32-S3-ePaper-1.54G: four-color integrated option

This product uses a 1.54-inch, 200 × 200 display with red, yellow, black and white. Waveshare documents a 20-second full refresh and a 15-second fast refresh. Treat those as model-specific modes and design the application around occasional updates rather than animation.

Separate ESP32 driver boards

A driver board can be useful when you already own an ESP32 or want to swap panels. The Waveshare E-Paper ESP32 Driver Board supports 3-wire and 4-wire SPI and lists 50–150 mA operating current for the board. Budget for the complete board, ESP32 activity and refresh events; do not size a regulator from a display-only assumption.

Good Display’s ESP32-M1 documentation describes SPI e-paper support, an official Arduino library, sample code and an ESP32 development environment. That establishes a development path, not universal support for every panel controller. Match the board, panel and library explicitly.

A practical pre-order checklist

  • Layout: Does 200 × 200 or 296 × 128 match the shape of your text, icons and charts?
  • Active area: Have you measured the visible area and the complete module outline?
  • Color: Is an accent color worth the longer, model-specific refresh cycle?
  • Interface: Is the board 3-wire or 4-wire SPI, and do you have enough usable ESP32 GPIOs?
  • Voltage: What are the panel input limits, board supply limits and signal-level requirements?
  • Revision: Which V1, V2 or V3 label will arrive, and which example matches it?
  • Included hardware: Are the breakout, connector, header and cable included?
  • Power: For a battery design, what is the whole-board current and what happens in sleep?
  • Environment: Does the documented temperature range cover the installation site?

Bring-up procedure for an ESP32 e-paper module

  1. Identify the hardware. Record the exact product name, controller and revision. Photograph both sides if the marking is unclear.
  2. Read the matching manual. Note supply voltage, logic levels, SPI mode, control signals and any required reset or busy handling.
  3. Plan the pins. Assign SPI and control GPIOs that are free on your ESP32 board. Check boot-strapping and other peripheral conflicts.
  4. Wire power first. Use the documented supply range. Do not infer panel logic tolerance from a 5 V label on a carrier board.
  5. Run the unmodified vendor example. Select the exact revision and panel variant before compiling or flashing.
  6. Confirm the first image. A successful test should produce the example’s expected pattern or text and complete its stated update cycle.
  7. Add your UI incrementally. Change one element at a time: font, layout, partial-update mode and then sleep behavior.
  8. Measure your real system. For battery projects, measure the ESP32, driver board and refresh event together; image retention does not make the entire system consume zero power.

Troubleshooting common failures

Nothing appears

  • Recheck the panel revision and controller selection in the example.
  • Verify power at the module while it refreshes, not only with the cable disconnected.
  • Check chip-select, reset, busy and data-command wiring in addition to clock and data.
  • Confirm that a 5 V signal is not reaching a 3.3 V-only ESP32 input or panel pin.

The display is partially updated or shows old pixels

  • Confirm that the selected update mode is supported by that panel revision.
  • Try the documented full-refresh example before using partial updates.
  • Allow the complete busy period to finish; do not send the next frame immediately.
  • Schedule occasional full refreshes if the panel’s documentation indicates ghosting with repeated partial updates.

Refreshes are much slower than expected

  • Check whether you are using a full refresh rather than a vendor-defined fast or partial mode.
  • Color panels can have longer documented timings; compare your model’s specification, not a different panel’s number.
  • Check temperature if the installation is outside the stated operating range.

The ESP32 resets during an update

  • Inspect the supply and regulator for the whole board’s current demand.
  • Use the documented 50–150 mA range for the Waveshare driver board as a board-level budgeting reference, not as a universal value.
  • Shorten or improve power and ground connections and retest with the display’s example firmware.

Which one should you buy?

Choose the 1.54-inch monochrome 200 × 200 SPI module when your enclosure is tight, your interface is square and you want the least complicated two-color design. Choose the 2.9-inch 296 × 128 module when horizontal room for labels, rows or charts matters more than a compact square footprint. Choose the black/white/red or four-color versions only when the accent color has a clear purpose and the documented multi-second refresh is acceptable.

Choose an integrated ESP32-S3-ePaper board when reducing wiring and board count is more valuable than mixing your own controller and breakout. Verify whether the unit is V1 or V2, especially for products transitioning to V2 from November 2025. If you prefer a replaceable panel and an existing ESP32, a separate driver board can work well, provided its controller support and voltage requirements match the exact display.

The safest purchase is the one whose resolution, aspect ratio, revision-specific example, electrical limits and refresh behavior all match the interface you intend to build. Confirm those details on the live listing and manual before ordering, because product revisions and included accessories can change.
