For SkyFactory 5 version 5.0.8, start with 64-bit Java 17, a 4GB Java heap (-Xmx4G), view-distance=10 and simulation-distance=10. Give the host roughly 2GB more memory than the heap, then lower simulation distance to 6–8 when several bases, machines or chunk loaders are active. Profile tick problems with Spark before adding JVM flags, and cap persistent chunk loading on shared servers.
Those settings match the pack’s Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge 47.4.0 stack. They are a reliable starting point, not a promise of a particular FPS or tick rate: world size, automation, number of players, CPU speed and chunk-loading behavior determine the result.
Use the exact SkyFactory 5.0.8 software stack
SkyFactory 5 is distributed as a Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge modpack. The current release identified for this setup is SkyFactory5-5.0.8.zip, with the matching server package named SkyFactory_5_Server_5.0.8.zip; both are dated March 11, 2025. The compatible server stack is Forge 47.4.0 on Minecraft 1.20.1 with Java 17.
Match client, server and Java versions
Every player should install the same modpack release that the server runs. A client on a different pack revision can fail to connect, reject registry data or behave unpredictably even when the Minecraft version appears correct. Use a 64-bit Java 17 installation for the server and confirm that the launch script is actually using it rather than another Java executable already on the machine.

Do not mix a newer Forge build into the server just because it is available. Change versions only when the pack documentation and the matching client release call for it. Version alignment should be checked before changing memory or distance settings; otherwise, a compatibility problem can look like a performance problem.
Start from the supplied server files
The server archive is the safest baseline because its launch files and defaults are designed for this pack. Keep a copy of the original files before editing them. If you are migrating an existing world, preserve the world directory and configuration files, but verify that the server is still running the same pack and Forge versions before judging performance.
Choose RAM without starving the operating system
The supplied server files allocate a 4GB heap, and the accompanying README identifies 4GB as the recommended minimum. Set that heap in user_jvm_args.txt with -Xmx4G. The heap is only the memory available to Java’s managed objects; the operating system, native libraries, file cache and other services need memory outside it.
Budget total machine memory
| Item | Starting value | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Java runtime | 64-bit Java 17 | Matches the 5.0.8 server stack. |
| Java heap | 4GB (-Xmx4G) |
The shipped allocation and documented recommended minimum. |
| Machine memory above the heap | About 2GB | Headroom for Java overhead, the operating system and ordinary background services. |
| Example host | 8GB total RAM | Can support roughly a 6GB heap as the factory grows, provided the machine has no substantial competing workload. |
The “heap plus about 2GB” rule is a sizing guide, not a requirement to assign every available byte to Minecraft. If the host also runs a desktop environment, a web panel, monitoring, voice chat or other servers, reserve additional memory for those workloads. A system that begins swapping can feel slower despite a larger nominal heap.
When a larger heap is justified
Increase the heap only when profiling or consistent memory pressure shows that the current allocation is the constraint. A growing factory can retain more block entities, inventories, entities and loaded chunks, but allocating a very large heap on a small machine can create resource contention. Forge’s guidance is that modern Minecraft often benefits more from fast CPU cores after a reasonable RAM amount than from unlimited memory.
Change one value at a time and record the result. If a larger heap does not improve tick behavior, return to the previous value and investigate chunk loading, automation or CPU saturation instead. Never use a heap larger than the host can keep resident without leaving the operating system breathing room.

Set view and simulation distance deliberately
The shipped server.properties uses both view-distance=10 and simulation-distance=10. Use those values as the first test because they provide the pack’s documented baseline. They control different workloads, so lowering the right one matters.
| Setting | Initial value | Primary effect | Adjustment to try |
|---|---|---|---|
view-distance |
10 | How far the server sends visible world chunks to a player. | Keep at 10 initially; lower it if network or chunk-generation load remains high after addressing ticking. |
simulation-distance |
10 | How far around players chunks continue to tick entities, machines and other game logic. | Try 6–8 when multiple bases or automation areas are active. |
Lower simulation distance first for busy factories
Simulation distance is usually the more direct lever when machines, mobs or farms are consuming tick time. Reducing it limits the radius in which chunks continue processing around each player, while leaving the visible horizon unchanged if view distance remains at 10. Forge recommends that simulation distance be equal to or marginally lower than view distance; do not set simulation distance above view distance.
At 6–8, players may notice that activity farther from them stops until they move closer, load the area through another mechanism or otherwise bring it into the active simulation radius. That behavior is the trade-off: less persistent ticking in exchange for lower server work. Test the value with the busiest normal player locations rather than an empty spawn island.
When to lower view distance
Lower view distance when the server is spending too much time preparing or sending visible chunks, or when the host’s network and CPU load remain high after simulation distance has been reduced. It shortens what players can see and can make terrain appear closer, so change it only after deciding that the visibility trade-off is acceptable.
Apply the settings safely
1. Stop the server cleanly
- Tell players to log out and stop the server through its normal console or control-panel stop action.
- Wait for the save to complete before editing files. Keep a copy of the current world and configuration so you can restore a known-good state.
2. Edit the Java heap
- Open
user_jvm_args.txtin the server directory. - Set the maximum heap argument to
-Xmx4Gfor the documented starting point. If the file already contains another maximum-heap value, replace that value rather than adding conflicting arguments. - Save the file and confirm that the host has about 2GB of unused capacity beyond the chosen heap.
The pack’s launch script reads this file, so changing an unrelated service configuration may have no effect. After restarting, check the startup output or hosting panel to verify that the intended Java 17 executable and heap are in use.
3. Edit distance settings
- Open
server.properties. - Set
view-distance=10andsimulation-distance=10for the baseline. - For a busier world, leave view distance at 10 and test
simulation-distance=8, then 6 if necessary. Keep the simulation value equal to or below view distance. - Save the file and restart the server; most server properties are read during startup.
4. Treat the config folder as part of the setup
Forge and the pack keep additional server behavior in the config folder. Make configuration changes there only when you know which mod owns the setting and what behavior it controls. Keep a dated copy of each change. If a change causes errors, restore the previous file and restart before making another adjustment.

Diagnose lag before changing JVM arguments
“Lag” can mean several different failures. A player may see low client FPS, delayed block updates, rubber-banding, slow chunk arrival or a server that cannot complete its ticks on time. More heap does not fix all of them, and a client graphics problem should not be treated as a server problem.
Separate client FPS from server tick delay
- Low client FPS: Usually appears as a choppy picture on one computer while other players remain responsive. Check the client’s graphics load, render distance and local Java allocation rather than changing server heap.
- Delayed interactions or rubber-banding: Often indicates server tick pressure, network delay or both. Compare several players and inspect the server while the problem is occurring.
- Slow or incomplete chunk arrival: Points toward view distance, chunk generation, network capacity or CPU pressure during exploration.
- Problems near one base: Strongly suggests local automation, entities, block entities or chunk loaders. Test away from that base before making global changes.
Profile with Spark
When the server’s tick rate drops, profile it with Spark before adding custom JVM arguments. Capture a profile while the lag is actually happening, ideally with the affected players online and the machines or farms running. Look for the systems consuming tick time, then change the setting that addresses that workload.
Forge notes that custom JVM arguments require before-and-after testing because there is no universal configuration that works for every machine and world. Keep the original arguments, change one item, reproduce the same workload and compare the profile. If the result is inconclusive, revert the change rather than accumulating flags copied from unrelated servers.

Check the single-threaded bottleneck
Large Create contraptions, mob farms and always-loaded chunks can increase the pressure on the main game thread. A host with many CPU cores can still struggle if one core is the limiting factor. Use profiling to identify the busiest areas, reduce unnecessary persistent activity and move expensive automation outside the radius that players keep active.
Control chunk loaders on shared servers
The pack-specific guide reports maxLoadedChunksPerPlayer = -1 by default. That value means unlimited chunk-loader chunks per player. Loaded chunks continue ticking even when the owner is not standing nearby, so a public server can accumulate work that no current player can see.
Set a finite per-player limit
On a shared or public server, replace the unlimited default with a real per-player limit in the relevant configuration. Choose a limit through testing and moderation policy rather than copying a number from another pack. Start conservatively, observe the effect on tick profiles, and increase it only if the server has capacity.

Explain the rule to players before enforcing it. Ask them to remove obsolete loaders, consolidate farms and disable systems that do not need to run continuously. A finite allowance makes the cost of automation visible and prevents one player’s base from consuming the entire server’s tick budget.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Audit persistent areas
- List bases and farms that remain active when no player is nearby.
- Temporarily disable loaders around the busiest area and profile again.
- Check whether several loaders keep the same machinery or mob farm active redundantly.
- Make loader limits part of server maintenance, not just a one-time setting.
Manage automatic backups and disk space
The shipped pack setup enables Simple Backups every 30 minutes, retains seven backups and can use up to 25GB in the backups directory. Those settings protect a world, but they also create regular disk writes and can consume storage as the world grows.
Keep protection while preventing a full disk
- Check the backup directory size and the host’s remaining disk space.
- If storage is tight, reduce the retention count or lower the maximum backup-directory size in the Simple Backups configuration.
- Keep enough restore points to cover the interval in which corruption or an unwanted change might be discovered.
- After changing retention, confirm that old archives are removed and that a new backup completes successfully.
Do not solve a disk-space problem by deleting the only recent backups while the server is running. Stop cleanly when the configuration requires it, preserve at least one known-good restore point and verify that the world can still start after maintenance.

Self-hosting
Self-hosting gives direct control over the CPU, storage, Java installation, Forge files and configuration. It is useful when you can monitor the machine and apply updates yourself. The trade-off is that you are responsible for operating-system updates, backups, firewall rules, uptime and troubleshooting.
Managed hosting
A managed host can package Java, Forge, storage and console access, reducing setup work. Compare plans by the memory available to the Java process and the CPU performance, not by RAM alone. The practical minimum remains the 4GB heap; the machine must provide roughly 2GB beyond that, plus any headroom for panels and other services.

Ask whether the advertised memory is dedicated to your server, whether storage is included for backups, and whether you can edit user_jvm_args.txt, server.properties and the config folder. Without those controls, you may be unable to apply the settings that SkyFactory 5 requires.
Prioritize fast cores after reasonable RAM
SkyFactory automation can put sustained pressure on the main tick thread. Once the server has enough memory to avoid swapping and garbage-collection pressure, a faster CPU core can matter more than assigning additional unused RAM. When comparing machines, ask for the processor model or performance class and test the actual world workload rather than relying on a core-count headline.
Use symptom-based troubleshooting
| Symptom | First checks | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Everyone experiences delayed interactions | Profile with Spark while the delay is present; inspect active automation and chunk loaders. | Reduce persistent loaders or localize heavy machines before changing JVM flags. |
| Lag appears only near one base | Move away from the base and compare; temporarily disable its farms and contraptions. | Remove redundant machinery, entities or loaders in that area. |
| Exploration causes stalls or slow chunk arrival | Watch CPU, disk and network load; check view distance and chunk generation activity. | Lower view distance if necessary, while keeping simulation distance no higher than it. |
| Server runs out of memory or restarts | Confirm the active heap in startup output and inspect total host memory. | Ensure about 2GB remains beyond the heap; increase only when the host can support it. |
| Disk usage rises unexpectedly | Inspect the backups directory and Simple Backups retention. | Reduce retention or the maximum backup size, then verify a successful backup. |
| Only one player sees stutter | Compare that client’s FPS and network behavior with other players. | Tune the client or connection first; do not change global server settings without server-wide evidence. |
Practical starting profiles
Small private world
Use the shipped 4GB heap on a machine with about 6GB or more available to the game and operating system, Java 17, and both distances at 10. Keep automatic backups enabled and review disk usage periodically. If the world remains lightly automated, there is no reason to lower distances pre-emptively.
Growing cooperative world
Retain the 4GB heap if profiling shows adequate memory, but monitor CPU and tick behavior as players build separate bases. Keep view distance at 10 and test simulation distance 8, then 6 if machines continue ticking beyond active play areas. Establish a finite chunk-loader allowance before unlimited loaders become a performance emergency.
Large automation-focused world
Use profiling as the primary decision tool. Confirm that the host has enough total memory before increasing the heap, identify the heaviest contraptions and mob farms, and limit persistent chunks. A faster CPU and disciplined automation management can provide more benefit than repeatedly adding RAM. Adjust backup retention if the world and backup archives approach the available disk limit.
Final setup checklist
- Client and server both use SkyFactory 5.0.8, Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge 47.4.0.
- The server runs 64-bit Java 17.
user_jvm_args.txtcontains the intended heap, starting with-Xmx4G.- The host has roughly 2GB beyond the Java heap for the operating system and overhead.
view-distance=10andsimulation-distance=10are the initial values.- Simulation distance is lowered to 6–8 before view distance when busy bases create tick pressure.
- Spark profiling is captured during the actual lag instead of guessing at JVM flags.
- Unlimited per-player chunk loading is replaced with a finite policy on shared servers.
- Simple Backups’ 30-minute schedule, seven-copy retention and possible 25GB directory usage fit the available disk.
- Every change is documented, tested under the same workload and reversible.
The smoothest SkyFactory 5 server is not the one with the largest heap or the highest distance values. It is the one running the exact supported stack, with enough total memory, a capable CPU, controlled ticking chunks and settings validated against the way its players actually build and play.
