For most nonlinear electromagnetic and metamaterial projects, choose COMSOL Multiphysics Wave Optics when you need coupled physics and a graphical workflow, or Meep when open-source scripting, reproducibility and cluster runs matter most. Choose OpenFOAM for nonlinear free-surface, coastal and shallow-water waves—not for electromagnetic metamaterials.

The right choice follows the governing physics, not a generic “best simulator” ranking. The sections below compare discretization, material models, boundaries, automation, coupling and verification, then give practical setup procedures for each tool.

Quick decision guide

  • Pick COMSOL Wave Optics for a complex device in which electromagnetic fields interact with heat transfer, structural mechanics, fluid flow or another physics domain. Its finite-element and boundary-element workflows cover time-harmonic, time-dependent and eigenfrequency/eigenmode studies, ports, perfectly matched layers (PMLs), anisotropic and lossy media, nonlinear optics and metamaterial examples.
  • Pick Meep when the problem is primarily electromagnetic and you want a free, open-source, scriptable finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) code. Python, Scheme and C++ APIs, MPI parallelism and explicit material definitions suit parameter sweeps, inverse design, periodic cells and reproducible cluster jobs.
  • Pick OpenFOAM for nonlinear fluid waves: free surfaces, hydraulic structures, coastal propagation and shallow-water studies. Its documented wave families include Boussinesq, Grimshaw, McCowan, Stokes, stream-function and shallow-water absorption models.
  • Do not select OpenFOAM as a first-choice electromagnetic metamaterial solver. Its documented wave solvers are specialized for computational fluid dynamics and continuum mechanics rather than Maxwell FDTD or finite-element metamaterial analysis.

What a nonlinear-wave or metamaterial model must represent

“Nonlinear wave simulation” covers several different mathematical problems. An electromagnetic metamaterial unit cell, a laser pulse in a nonlinear optical medium, and a solitary water wave all contain waves, but they use different constitutive laws, scales and numerical methods. Start by writing down the field variables and the nonlinearity before comparing software.

Governing physics and material law

For electromagnetics, identify whether the material is isotropic or anisotropic, dispersive, lossy, active (gain), gyrotropic or nonlinear. In nonlinear optics, the polarization may depend on powers of the electric field through susceptibility terms. Meep directly represents instantaneous isotropic Kerr and Pockels nonlinearities; COMSOL provides nonlinear-optics interfaces and lets you define anisotropic and lossy materials within a multiphysics model.

For free-surface flow, the nonlinearity is in the fluid equations and the surface evolution rather than in an electromagnetic permittivity. OpenFOAM’s wave documentation separates solitary-wave theories from regular-wave theories and from shallow-water absorption models, so the selected solver must match the wave regime.

Spatial and temporal scales

Metamaterial cells can be much smaller than the device or wavelength of interest. A model may need a resolved unit cell, a homogenized effective medium, or a periodic supercell. Nonlinear interactions can generate higher harmonics, so the shortest wavelength created during the run—not only the source wavelength—sets the most demanding mesh requirement.

Time-dependent calculations also need time steps that resolve the fastest temporal variation. COMSOL’s wave guidance states that accuracy is limited by how well the finite-element mesh resolves waves in space and by how well time steps resolve temporal variations. The same principle applies to FDTD and finite-volume calculations: perform a resolution and timestep study instead of accepting a visually smooth field as proof of convergence.

Boundaries, ports and periodicity

Open boundaries must absorb outgoing energy without reflecting it back into the device. PMLs are available in COMSOL and are a standard boundary option in Meep workflows. Periodic or Bloch-type boundaries are useful for infinite metamaterial arrays, while ports are useful for launching and measuring guided modes in a finite device. A boundary that is correct for a periodic unit cell can be wrong for an isolated particle, so document the physical interpretation of every boundary.

Verification versus validation

Verification asks whether the numerical implementation solves the stated equations: refine the mesh, reduce the timestep, tighten nonlinear tolerances and check that observables stabilize. Validation asks whether those equations represent reality: compare with an analytical solution, a trusted benchmark, an experiment or a measured material response. None of the tools supplies a universal accuracy guarantee; the burden is on the modeler to show convergence and physical agreement.

COMSOL Multiphysics Wave Optics: the multiphysics choice

Where it fits best

COMSOL is the strongest general-purpose option when an electromagnetic wave is only one part of the system. A metamaterial absorber may heat up; a piezoelectric or elastic structure may deform; a fluidic device may change its optical index; or thermal feedback may alter the material response. A single model can represent those domains and exchange fields between them.

Its Wave Optics documentation covers finite-element and boundary-element formulations, time-harmonic studies for sinusoidal steady state, time-dependent studies for pulses or other nonsinusoidal signals, and eigenfrequency/eigenmode studies for resonances and guided modes. The same documentation includes anisotropic and lossy materials, ports, PMLs, nonlinear optics and metamaterial examples.

A practical COMSOL setup sequence

  1. Choose the analysis type. Use a frequency-domain study for a steady sinusoidal response, an eigenfrequency or eigenmode study for resonances and modal fields, or a time-dependent study for pulses, switching and explicitly time-varying nonlinear behavior.
  2. Choose the electromagnetic interface and geometry. Decide whether the structure is a finite device, a periodic cell or a geometry that benefits from a FEM-BEM formulation. Keep a clear record of physical dimensions and symmetry assumptions.
  3. Define the material model. Enter anisotropic tensors, frequency-dependent loss, nonlinear optical terms and any coupling variables. If the material is fitted from measured data, verify that the fit remains causal and accurate over the simulated band.
  4. Set sources, ports and boundaries. Use ports for guided-mode excitation and measurement where appropriate. Surround radiating regions with PMLs, and use periodic conditions only when the repeated structure is part of the physical problem.
  5. Build the mesh around the shortest relevant scale. Resolve narrow gaps, curved inclusions and the shortest wavelength expected after nonlinear frequency conversion. A mesh adequate for the fundamental can be inadequate for its generated harmonics.
  6. Set time stepping and nonlinear tolerances. For a transient model, ensure the time steps resolve the fastest field variation. For a nonlinear stationary or frequency-domain solve, use sensible continuation, initial values and solver tolerances rather than demanding a difficult solution in one jump.
  7. Add coupled physics only after the electromagnetic model is stable. Introduce heat transfer, mechanics or fluid flow incrementally. This isolates errors and shows whether a convergence failure originates in the wave problem or in the coupling.
  8. Demonstrate convergence. Repeat the calculation with a finer mesh and smaller time steps, then compare quantities that matter—transmission, reflection, absorbed power, resonance frequency, field maximum or force—not just a rendered field plot.

Strengths and trade-offs

  • Strength: one graphical environment handles geometry, materials, meshing, studies and multiphysics coupling.
  • Strength: FEM is well suited to intricate, curved and heterogeneous device geometry, while BEM options can reduce the need to mesh unbounded exterior regions in suitable formulations.
  • Strength: ports, PMLs, anisotropy, loss, nonlinear optics and eigenmode analysis are available in one workflow.
  • Trade-off: a large 3D transient nonlinear model can be computationally demanding, especially when the mesh must resolve generated harmonics and several coupled fields.
  • Trade-off: reproducibility requires saving the model file, material definitions, solver settings, mesh sequence and convergence evidence; a screenshot of the graphical model is not enough.

Meep: the open-source FDTD choice

Where it fits best

Meep is a free, open-source electromagnetic simulator built around FDTD. Its Python, Scheme and C++ APIs make the entire model—geometry, sources, materials, boundaries, resolution and data extraction—explicit and version-controllable. MPI parallelism supports runs on clusters, which is valuable for parameter sweeps and inverse-design loops.

The documented coordinate options are 1D, 2D, 3D and cylindrical. Material support includes arbitrary anisotropic, dispersive, lossy or gain and gyrotropic media, plus nonlinear Kerr and Pockels responses. The materials reference expresses nonlinear permittivity through susceptibility terms and specifically documents instantaneous, isotropic Pockels and Kerr nonlinearities.

A reproducible Meep workflow

  1. Declare the computational cell and resolution. Select 1D, 2D, 3D or cylindrical coordinates, then choose a spatial resolution that resolves the smallest geometric feature and the shortest wavelength in the material—not merely the free-space wavelength.
  2. Define geometry and periodicity. Build the unit cell or finite device in code. For a periodic metamaterial, set the cell and periodic phase consistently with the intended wave vector; for an isolated object, leave enough surrounding space for the absorbing region.
  3. Specify the source. Choose a pulse for broadband response or a continuous source for a narrowband study. Place it so that the source does not overlap unintended material regions or absorbing layers.
  4. Fit dispersive and lossy media. Represent frequency-dependent response with the documented dispersive material model and check the fit over the complete simulated band. A visually plausible fit at one frequency can produce incorrect transients elsewhere.
  5. Add nonlinear susceptibility terms. Use Kerr or Pockels models only when their instantaneous and isotropic assumptions match the physical medium. Record the coefficient units and normalization in the script.
  6. Choose absorbing or periodic boundaries. Add absorbing layers around finite structures; use periodic boundaries for repeated cells. Test reflection from the boundary with a simpler reference model before interpreting a small transmission feature.
  7. Run a resolution and timestep study. FDTD stability and accuracy depend on the spatial grid and timestep. Repeat at higher resolution, monitor resonance positions and power balance, and verify that nonlinear harmonics are resolved.
  8. Parallelize and archive. Run independent parameter points with MPI where useful. Store the source code, dependency versions, input parameters and output-processing scripts so another user can regenerate the figures.

Strengths and trade-offs

  • Strength: source code exposes every modeling choice, which is useful for reproducible research and automated sweeps.
  • Strength: MPI and multiple APIs fit workstation, cluster and inverse-design workflows.
  • Strength: the material system covers anisotropy, dispersion, gyrotropy, loss or gain, Kerr and Pockels behavior.
  • Trade-off: FDTD uses a grid, so curved boundaries and very small gaps may require many cells or careful subpixel treatment.
  • Trade-off: a transient grid must resolve the fastest material and geometric scales throughout the band; a narrowband result does not prove broadband accuracy.
  • Trade-off: multiphysics outside electromagnetics is not its central workflow. Thermal or mechanical feedback generally needs a separate solver or an orchestration layer.

OpenFOAM: the nonlinear fluid-wave choice

Wave theories it documents

OpenFOAM’s wave documentation organizes nonlinear free-surface modeling into distinct theory families. Solitary-wave options include Boussinesq, Grimshaw and McCowan formulations. Regular-wave options include Stokes and stream-function theories. Shallow-water absorption models address wave damping at boundaries or in designated regions.

That specialization is useful: a coastal engineer can select a theory appropriate to depth, amplitude and wave shape instead of forcing every case into one generic solver. It also defines the tool’s limit for this article: the documented solver families target CFD and continuum mechanics, not electromagnetic Maxwell equations or metamaterial unit-cell analysis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An OpenFOAM selection workflow

  1. Classify the physical wave. Decide whether the case is solitary, regular periodic, shallow-water or another free-surface problem. Record depth, amplitude, period and the expected degree of nonlinearity.
  2. Select a solver for that class. OpenFOAM’s standard-solvers guide explicitly notes that there is no generic solver for every case. Start from the solver whose equations and boundary conditions match the classified wave.
  3. Configure the wave and absorption model. Set the chosen Boussinesq, Grimshaw, McCowan, Stokes, stream-function or shallow-water formulation, then define wave generation and absorption regions as required.
  4. Build and test the mesh. Resolve the free surface, bathymetry, obstacles and boundary layers. Run a reduced domain first to catch setup errors before paying for a full coastal or hydraulic calculation.
  5. Check conservation and propagation. Compare wave height, phase speed, crest shape and energy behavior at multiple locations. Refine the mesh and timestep until those observables stabilize.
  6. Validate against theory or measurements. Use an analytical solitary or regular-wave case, a laboratory experiment or a trusted benchmark before drawing conclusions about a new geometry.

Why it is not the right metamaterial tool

An electromagnetic metamaterial requires electric and magnetic fields, frequency-dependent constitutive tensors, resonant inclusions and electromagnetic radiation or port boundaries. OpenFOAM’s documented wave models instead describe fluid motion and free surfaces. It can be an excellent part of a larger fluid-structure or hydraulic study, but using it as the first tool for an electromagnetic unit cell would require replacing the governing equations and solver assumptions that make it useful for CFD.

COMSOL or Meep for nonlinear electromagnetics?

Both can represent nonlinear electromagnetic behavior, but they optimize for different workflows.

Choose COMSOL when coupling and geometry dominate

Use COMSOL if the nonlinear optical response changes temperature, deformation, flow or another field that must be solved self-consistently. It is also the more natural choice when a team needs a graphical model builder, built-in ports and PMLs, eigenmode studies and finite-element handling of complex curved geometry in one project.

Choose Meep when automation and transparency dominate

Use Meep if the central deliverable is a large set of electromagnetic simulations, a parameter sweep, an inverse-design loop or a cluster-ready script. Its open-source code and APIs make it straightforward to place model definitions under version control and to rerun every case with changed geometry or material parameters.

Questions that decide close calls

  • Do you need heat, mechanics or fluid flow in the same solve? Favor COMSOL.
  • Do you need hundreds or thousands of scripted variants? Favor Meep, provided its FDTD grid and material assumptions fit the problem.
  • Is the structure periodic? Both can model periodic cells; choose based on whether the rest of the workflow is graphical multiphysics or scripted electromagnetic computation.
  • Are the material data strongly dispersive, anisotropic or gyrotropic? Both have relevant support, but verify the exact constitutive form and frequency range before committing.
  • Is the response broadband or pulsed? Both have time-domain paths, but the required spatial and temporal resolution must be demonstrated for the highest frequency generated or present.
  • Do you need a guided-mode port or an eigenmode? COMSOL’s documented ports and eigenfrequency/eigenmode studies may reduce setup effort; in Meep, implement the equivalent source and modal analysis explicitly in the script.

Verification checklist for nonlinear simulations

  • Define the observable before refining. Pick transmission, reflection, absorbed power, resonance frequency, phase speed, crest height or another quantity tied to the research question.
  • Resolve the shortest scale. Include small gaps, material skin depths, dispersive features and nonlinear harmonics—not only the nominal source wavelength.
  • Refine space and time independently. A finer mesh cannot compensate for an under-resolved timestep, and a smaller timestep cannot correct a spatially unresolved field.
  • Check energy or power balance. Unexpected gain or loss may indicate an incorrect material fit, boundary reflection, source normalization or post-processing error.
  • Test the boundaries. Move PMLs farther away, increase absorbing thickness or compare periodic and finite-domain setups when the physical interpretation changes.
  • Verify the constitutive model. Confirm tensor orientation, sign conventions, units, dispersion range and nonlinear coefficients. For Meep’s instantaneous isotropic Kerr or Pockels models, ensure that the physical medium actually satisfies those assumptions.
  • Use continuation for difficult nonlinear states. Increase source amplitude gradually or start from a nearby converged solution, then record the path so another run can reproduce it.
  • Validate a simplified case first. Compare a linear limit, a homogeneous medium, a known mode, an analytical solitary wave or an experimental measurement before trusting a complex geometry.
  • Archive the complete model. Keep geometry, mesh or grid settings, timestep, solver tolerances, material data, boundary definitions, source waveform and analysis scripts together.

Common failure modes and fixes

The field looks smooth but the result changes with resolution

Visual smoothness is not convergence. Refine the mesh and timestep, then compare numerical observables. Nonlinear frequency generation often reveals an under-resolved model first because the new harmonics have shorter wavelengths.

A transient run reflects from the boundary

Check that the absorbing layer is placed outside every radiating region, that its thickness and parameters are adequate, and that the source is not inside the absorber. For periodic metamaterial cells, confirm that periodicity is intentional rather than an accidental wraparound.

The nonlinear solver fails at the desired amplitude

Begin with the corresponding linear or low-amplitude case, use continuation, improve the initial field and tighten the mesh near high-field regions. In a coupled COMSOL model, solve the electromagnetic problem first and add thermal, mechanical or fluid feedback afterward.

A dispersive material produces nonphysical ringing

Inspect the frequency-domain fit and its time-domain behavior. Ensure poles, damping and units are correct over the complete source bandwidth. Compare against a homogeneous reference medium before inserting resonant inclusions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The OpenFOAM case has no suitable solver

Reclassify the wave rather than forcing a familiar solver. OpenFOAM does not provide one generic wave solver; select among its documented solitary, regular-wave and shallow-water families according to the governing assumptions. If the actual problem is electromagnetic, change tool families instead of trying to retrofit a CFD solver.

Bottom line

There is no universal winner. COMSOL Wave Optics is the safest default for nonlinear electromagnetic devices that must interact with other physics or complex engineering geometry. Meep is the strongest choice for open, script-first electromagnetic work, nonlinear material experiments, periodic cells and reproducible parallel sweeps. OpenFOAM is the specialist choice for nonlinear free-surface and shallow-water waves. Make the decision from the equations, constitutive data, boundaries and validation plan, then prove the chosen model is converged.
