Start with SILENT HILL 2 (2024 remake) on PS5 or PC. It delivers the closest modern package to what most P.T. players want: psychological horror, oppressive sound design, modern controls and a focused story. If you want the original continuity, play SILENT HILL (1999), then SILENT HILL 2 (2001), then SILENT HILL 3. For a free PS5 experience, choose SILENT HILL: The Short Message.
How to choose your next Silent Hill game
P.T. leaves players looking for more than jump scares. Its appeal comes from repetition, environmental unease, sound that makes ordinary spaces threatening, and a story that withholds answers until the player pays close attention. No single Silent Hill title reproduces every part of that formula, so the right choice depends on whether you value modern presentation, the original story line, experimental structure, evasion, or immediate access on current hardware.

1. SILENT HILL 2 (2024 remake): the best overall follow-up
This is the safest recommendation when a P.T. player wants a modern game rather than a museum piece. The remake centers psychological horror, oppressive audio and a concentrated narrative instead of turning the series into a conventional action game. Its self-contained story means you do not need to know the earlier games’ mythology before starting.
#1 Best Overall
- Fully Remade to terrify modern audiences
- KONAMI's intense psychological horror masterpiece SILENT HILL 2 is made exclusively for PlayStation 5
- The main protagonist James Sunderland searches for clues in the namesake town, after receiving a mysterious letter from his wife Mary… who has long been dead
- Experience the eerie monsters and other manifestations of James' consciousness reworked after 20 years
- Made with state-of-the-art technology to play on modern entertainment systems in 4K
Konami describes it as a full remake of the original SILENT HILL 2, first released for PlayStation 2 in 2001. The remake was announced for October 8, 2024, with both physical and digital editions. It is available on PS5 and PC through Steam, making it the most straightforward legal option for players who do not own older consoles.
Why it suits P.T. players
- Psychological focus: the horror is built around implication, guilt and unstable perception rather than a simple monster parade.
- Modern controls: current hardware removes much of the friction associated with playing a 1990s console release.
- Strong sound design: environmental noise and silence do much of the tension-building work.
- Complete campaign: it offers a full-length story rather than a short proof-of-concept.
Choose this version when
Pick the remake if you want the original game’s psychological premise with contemporary presentation, or if you need a PS5 or PC game you can purchase and play without tracking down legacy hardware. A physical PS5 edition is the practical choice for players who prefer a disc; a digital edition is simpler if you use a download-only library.
2. SILENT HILL (1999) followed by SILENT HILL 3: the original-continuity route
If the mythology and story progression matter more than convenience, the strongest sequence is SILENT HILL (1999), then SILENT HILL 2 (2001), then SILENT HILL 3. The first and third games form the main continuity route. SILENT HILL 2 is largely self-contained, so it can be played independently, but placing it between the first and third games gives you the broadest view of the early series.
What this path delivers
The original games show how the series developed its fog, radio noise, oppressive spaces and symbolic horror before modern visual effects made those techniques easier to present. They also make the contrast between a continuity-driven entry and a mostly independent story clear.
The access problem
The limitation is not the order; it is availability. The original releases do not have one universal current storefront or one guaranteed platform in every region. Expect to rely on original hardware, used physical copies or another legitimate legacy-access method that is legal where you live. Check the exact edition and region before spending money, and do not assume that a listing for one console will run on another.
For a first-time player who wants the story but lacks older hardware, the 2024 remake is the lower-friction entry. For a collector or preservation-minded player, the original sequence is the route that best preserves the historical lineage.
3. SILENT HILL 4: The Room: the experimental choice
SILENT HILL 4: The Room is the pick for players who want the series to become stranger rather than more familiar. Its apartment-as-dungeon design and unusually alienated mood create a different kind of confinement from P.T.’s looping corridor. The structure is experimental, and that is its value: it does not simply repeat the formula of the first three games.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy it may click after P.T.
- The home environment becomes a source of threat instead of a safe hub.
- The game’s unusual structure rewards curiosity about how spaces connect and change.
- The mood is more isolated and disorienting than a conventional haunted-town journey.
Check access before committing
The supplied catalog information does not establish a single current platform for every region, so verify the version you can legally obtain before planning your playthrough. Treat it as a platform-dependent recommendation, not a guaranteed modern-store purchase.
4. SILENT HILL: Shattered Memories: the no-combat, chase-focused detour
Shattered Memories is the right answer when the part of P.T. you loved most was being pursued while unable to fight back. Its defining detour is a no-combat design that emphasizes chases and escape rather than building an arsenal. That changes the rhythm: threat comes from route choice, panic and movement instead of deciding whether to spend ammunition.
Who should play it
Choose it if you want a more direct evasion experience, or if conventional survival-horror combat breaks the helplessness that attracted you to P.T. Do not choose it expecting a straightforward continuation of the 1999 game; it is better understood as a reimagining with its own priorities.

Finding a copy
Konami’s catalog lists a PSP version. Because this is a legacy release, a used physical copy may be the most realistic route, but inventory, condition, regional compatibility and pricing change constantly. Confirm the exact PSP edition and your ability to play it before purchasing.
5. SILENT HILL f: the newest setting on current hardware
SILENT HILL f is for players who want a new setting rather than another return to the familiar American town. It is set in 1960s Japan and follows high-school student Shimizu Hinako, making it the first entry in the series set in Japan. Konami launched it on September 25, 2025, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC storefronts, with a Day One physical edition.
Why it belongs on a P.T. follow-up list
The historical Japanese setting gives the series a fresh visual and cultural framework while retaining the expectation of psychological horror. It is a better match for readers who want an actively supported, current-generation release than for someone specifically seeking the original games’ continuity.
A current-interest signal
Konami Digital Entertainment reported that SILENT HILL f surpassed 2 million units in worldwide cumulative shipments, measured as of April 22, 2026. That figure is a shipment milestone, not a claim about individual players or a review score.
6. SILENT HILL: The Short Message: the free PS5 sampler
If you want to try another Silent Hill game immediately and spend nothing on the game itself, start here. The Short Message is free on PS5, short, complete and independent of the previous and upcoming titles in the series. Its story addresses slander and bullying on social networks, giving the horror a contemporary subject rather than asking you to follow older mythology.

- This is Korean Version released in Korea. Region free title so you can play it on your System.
- Korean Edition supports Multi language Subtitles: English, Japanese, Chinese, Korean
- Having received a letter from his deceased wife, James heads to where they shared so many memories, in the hope of seeing her one more time: SILENT HILL. There, by the lake, he finds a woman eerily similar to her... "My name...is Maria," the woman smiles. Her face, her voice... She's just like her. Experience a master class in psychological survival horror―lauded as the best in the series―on the latest hardware with chilling visuals and visceral sounds.
What “independent” means
You do not need to complete any earlier Silent Hill game first, and it does not require knowledge of the next release. Konami describes it as “a short game with a complete story that is independent of the previous and upcoming titles in the series.” That makes it a sampler, not a replacement for a full-length campaign.
Set expectations
Play it when you want a compact PS5 experience or a low-commitment test of the series’ modern direction. Choose the 2024 SILENT HILL 2 remake instead if you want a larger, more developed story after finishing a short game.
7. SILENT HILL: Downpour: an optional later stop
Downpour is worth considering after the stronger continuity and modern-entry recommendations, especially if you have already played the games that most directly answer the P.T. question. It belongs later in the order because it is a subsequent spin-off rather than the clearest bridge to the original Team Silent run or the current releases.
Konami’s catalog lists a PS3 version. That makes platform access a practical first check; do not buy a copy until you know you have compatible hardware or a legitimate way to play it.
Which game feels most like P.T.?
There are several valid interpretations of “most like P.T.”:
Best Value
- 1183237
| If you mean… | Choose… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Modern psychological horror | SILENT HILL 2 (2024 remake) | Current controls and presentation around a focused psychological story |
| The original series’ atmosphere and lineage | SILENT HILL (1999) → SILENT HILL 3 | The first-and-third-game continuity route |
| Being chased without fighting | Shattered Memories | No-combat, escape-oriented design |
| A strange, enclosed structure | SILENT HILL 4: The Room | Apartment-as-dungeon design and an alienated mood |
| A short free PS5 experience | The Short Message | Free, complete and independent |
| A new setting on current consoles | SILENT HILL f | 1960s Japan and current-generation platforms |
None of these choices reproduces P.T. exactly. The table separates the qualities people usually mean when they use that comparison, so you can select by the experience you actually want instead of by title alone.
Recommended play orders
For a PS5 owner starting tonight
- Play SILENT HILL: The Short Message if you want a free, short introduction.
- Move to SILENT HILL 2 (2024 remake) for the main psychological-horror campaign.
- Choose SILENT HILL f next if you want a new setting and current-generation production.
For someone who wants the classic story
- Begin with SILENT HILL (1999).
- Play SILENT HILL 2 (2001), either as the second stop or independently if that is the version you can access.
- Finish the core continuity route with SILENT HILL 3.
- Add SILENT HILL 4: The Room as the experimental follow-up.
For a player who dislikes combat
- Start with Shattered Memories for its no-combat chase structure.
- Try The Short Message for a compact modern sampler.
- Choose the 2024 remake only if combat is acceptable as part of a larger psychological-horror campaign.
For a collector using older systems
- Confirm which original hardware you own and which regional editions it supports.
- Secure legitimate copies of the first three games before planning the full sequence.
- Check PSP availability for Shattered Memories and PS3 availability for Downpour.
- Verify condition, region and compatibility for every used disc or cartridge.
Platforms, editions and legal access
Current and legacy availability are very different decisions. The 2024 remake is the clearest PS5/PC purchase. SILENT HILL f is the current multi-platform option across PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The Short Message is a free PS5 download. The older games require more checking: the original trilogy has no single universal storefront guarantee, Shattered Memories is represented by a PSP catalog listing, and Downpour by a PS3 listing.
Use official stores, original discs, or legitimate second-hand copies where permitted. Avoid assuming that emulation, account-region changes or an online listing is authorized simply because it is easy to find. For used products, verify the console model, language or region, disc condition and whether required hardware is still available.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Starting with continuity when you want convenience: the original route is rewarding but can become a hardware hunt. Use the remake if access is your main concern.
- Expecting every entry to be a sequel: SILENT HILL 2 is largely self-contained, The Short Message is explicitly independent, and Shattered Memories follows a reimagining approach.
- Buying a legacy copy before checking compatibility: PSP and PS3 listings do not guarantee that your current setup can run them.
- Assuming “like P.T.” means “no combat”: the remake is the best modern psychological match, while Shattered Memories is the better fit for pure evasion.
- Treating shipment figures as quality scores: the reported SILENT HILL f figure describes worldwide cumulative shipments as of a stated date, not critical consensus or player count.
Bottom-line recommendation
Buy or download SILENT HILL 2 (2024 remake) first if you want the best all-around follow-up to P.T. It is modern, self-contained and available on PS5 and PC. Add The Short Message for a free PS5 sampler, choose Shattered Memories for no-combat chases, and follow the 1999 → 2001 → 3 sequence when preserving the original story line matters more than convenience. Choose SILENT HILL f when you want the newest setting on current hardware.
