Start with Apprentice or Novice, then tune Custom difficulty if the pace or incoming damage still feels tiring. Remap attack, jump, dodge, and guard to comfortable buttons; disable camera shake and hit flash when they cause discomfort; enable character outlines when sprites disappear into the background; and change between handheld, tabletop, and TV play to protect your eyes, hands, and posture.

Install the latest update before a long or completion-focused run. SEGA’s April 2026 update added the most useful comfort controls, while Nintendo’s Switch 2 edition supports all three display modes and provides a higher-resolution handheld image.

Recommended comfort setup at a glance

Use this as a starting profile rather than a mandatory preset. The game’s best settings depend on whether your main limitation is reaction speed, visual sensitivity, text readability, or hand strain.

Area Starting choice Adjust when
Difficulty Apprentice or Novice Choose Custom when enemy damage or attack frequency needs separate adjustment.
Enemy damage Lower it first in Custom Use this when mistakes are expensive or repeated hits end attempts.
Enemy attack frequency Reduce it if rapid attacks feel stressful Lower it when the problem is reaction density rather than damage per hit.
Controls Fully remap high-frequency actions Move attack, jump, dodge, and guard to buttons that do not require stretching.
Camera shake Off if motion is tiring Keep it on only if its feedback helps you read impacts without discomfort.
Hit flash Off if flashes are distracting or uncomfortable Turn it back on only if you need stronger confirmation that an attack connected.
Hit stop Choose the least disruptive option available Reduce it if brief freezes interrupt your rhythm.
Character outlines On when characters blend into scenery Use them in busy stages or whenever enemy silhouettes are hard to separate.
Display mode Handheld for a sharper portable image Move to tabletop or TV when posture, text size, or hand position becomes uncomfortable.
Map Use the enlarged in-stage map Rely on it when navigation or backtracking is difficult.

These recommendations use the options documented by SEGA, Nintendo, and TechRadar; they are not a developer-designated “comfort mode.”

Update the game before changing anything else

Check for the newest available patch from the Switch 2 home menu before beginning a long session. SEGA’s April 17, 2026 notice identifies version 1.21 as a fix for a critical Nintendo Switch save-data problem affecting three save slots at high completion percentages. A completion run is exactly the kind of playthrough where losing progress is most damaging, so updating is a practical first step rather than an optional polish pass.

After updating, open the options menus and confirm that the new comfort controls are present. SEGA’s April 2026 update added configuration for hit stop, hit flash, camera shake, and character outlines, enlarged the in-stage map, and added a menu option for reviewing tutorials you have already seen. If an option is missing, verify that the update finished installing and restart the game before troubleshooting your controller or display.

What demands the game places on you

SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance is a hand-drawn 2D action platformer starring Joe Musashi. Nintendo describes katana and kunai combat, Ninjutsu and Ninpo abilities, combo-focused fighting, Amulets, Ningi tools, hidden paths, and more than a dozen stages. TechRadar characterizes the moment-to-moment play as fast side-scrolling combat mixed with light exploration, platforming, and puzzle-solving.

That combination creates several different kinds of load. Combat asks for repeated directional input and quick defensive reactions. Platforming and hidden routes require visual scanning. Puzzle sections interrupt the combat rhythm and can make a stretched or awkward control layout more noticeable. The right setup therefore reduces the specific load that is tiring you instead of simply lowering every option.

Choose the right difficulty for your reaction load

Apprentice or Novice for a gentler first run

SEGA’s manual lists four difficulty levels: Shinobi, Apprentice, Novice, and Custom. Start with Apprentice when you want the normal structure of the game with less pressure, or choose Novice when incoming damage and rapid encounters are already making you tense. TechRadar found the game generally forgiving on normal difficulty, with unlimited lives and generous checkpoints, so you do not need to select the highest setting to see the intended campaign.

A lower preset is especially useful while you are learning Joe’s movement, the timing of defensive actions, and the layout of a new stage. It also lets you evaluate whether discomfort comes from the game’s challenge or from your controls and display. If you can play comfortably but still want a greater challenge later, raise the setting after your layout is stable instead of changing several variables at once.

Use Custom when one part of the challenge is the problem

Custom is the best choice when the default difficulty is close to comfortable but not quite right. TechRadar reports that Custom options include variants for enemy damage and attack frequency. Treat those as separate controls:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Lower enemy damage first when a missed dodge or a single mistake removes too much health. This preserves the need to read attacks without making every error end a run.
  • Lower attack frequency when the issue is a stream of simultaneous or rapid attacks. This gives you more time to identify threats and choose a response.
  • Lower both when fatigue comes from reaction pressure and the consequences of mistakes together.

Change one variable at a time and play through a representative section before changing another. That makes it clear whether you needed more decision time, less punishment, or both. Because the available documentation describes the adjustable categories but does not publish a universal comfort preset, the useful setting is the one that removes your specific bottleneck.

When to increase the challenge again

Raise difficulty only after you can complete ordinary encounters without gripping the controller tightly, losing track of enemies, or repeatedly pausing to recover. A higher setting is not an accessibility requirement, and there is no documented comfort benefit to enduring a preset that causes pain or visual stress. Unlimited lives and generous checkpoints mean you can experiment without treating every attempt as irreversible progress.

Remap controls to eliminate stretching and awkward reaches

TechRadar reports full control remapping. Use it to put the actions you press most often where your thumb or finger naturally rests, not where a default diagram happens to place them.

Build the layout around high-frequency actions

  1. Open the game’s control settings and identify the commands you use repeatedly in ordinary combat: attack, jump, dodge, and guard. Add Ninjutsu, Ninpo, or tool commands to this group if you activate them frequently.
  2. Place attack and jump on buttons that can be pressed without moving your thumb across the face-button cluster. Keep dodge and guard close enough to reach while your thumb remains prepared to return to movement.
  3. Test the layout in a low-risk stage section. Check whether you can attack while moving, jump without releasing the direction you need, and dodge without an accidental pause or menu input.
  4. Save the same logical arrangement for handheld and any paired controller. Switching hardware should change button shape, not the mental location of each action.

Avoid copying a layout that is comfortable only for a five-minute test. Repeated presses over a full stage reveal whether a button requires thumb extension, forceful clicking, or an uncomfortable wrist angle. If a command is important but used only in specific encounters, keep it reachable without displacing the actions you use every few seconds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use consistency to reduce mental load

Do not redesign the layout every time you change difficulty. A stable mapping lets muscle memory handle routine inputs while your attention stays on enemy patterns and platforming. If another player uses the same console, record the chosen arrangement in a note or photograph the settings screen so it can be restored without guesswork.

Reduce visual effects without losing readability

SEGA’s April 2026 update added settings for hit stop, hit flash, camera shake, and character outlines. These options address different problems, so adjust them independently.

Camera shake

Turn camera shake off when screen movement causes eye strain, nausea, headaches, or difficulty tracking Joe. The game remains playable without the extra movement because the important information is still conveyed by character motion, attacks, and the environment. If you rely on shake as impact feedback, try a short test with it enabled at a lower overall visual load before deciding whether it genuinely helps.

Hit flash

Disable hit flash if bright, sudden changes are tiring or distracting. Some players use flashes to confirm a successful strike; if that is true for you, compensate by watching enemy animation, sound, or hit-stop behavior rather than restoring an uncomfortable effect.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Hit stop

Hit stop briefly interrupts action to emphasize a contact. If those pauses make the game feel jerky or interfere with your timing, select the less disruptive setting available. If you need stronger confirmation of contact, leave it enabled while disabling camera shake or hit flash; the options are useful precisely because they can be separated.

Character outlines

Enable character outlines when Joe or enemies merge with a detailed background. Outlines improve figure-ground separation without requiring brighter flashes or additional camera movement. They are particularly useful in stages where effects, scenery, and enemy colors are similar. Turn them off only if the added edge is itself visually distracting.

Pick the display mode that suits your eyes and posture

Nintendo lists TV, tabletop, and handheld support for the Switch 2 version. Nintendo also says the Switch 2 edition has higher resolution in handheld mode, producing a sharper portable image. Sharpness helps small details and text, but a sharper image is not automatically the most comfortable viewing arrangement.

Handheld mode

Use handheld when the higher-resolution screen makes stage details easier to distinguish and you can hold the console without bending your wrists or neck. Keep the screen at a distance where you are not leaning forward to read it. If your hands tighten around the console, the benefit of a sharper image is outweighed by sustained grip strain; move to tabletop or a controller instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tabletop mode

Tabletop play separates the screen from your hands. It is a useful middle ground when handheld posture is tiring but a television is unavailable. Place the console high enough that you are not looking sharply downward, and use a controller position that leaves your forearms supported. Increase the viewing distance only if text and map details remain legible.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

TV mode

TV play is often the easiest way to maintain a neutral neck and relaxed hands during a long session. Sit far enough away that you can scan the whole playfield without moving your head constantly. If the television is large or bright, lower room glare and adjust the display’s brightness to prevent the game’s effects from becoming the main source of eye fatigue.

Switch modes when your body gives you a reason, not only between stages. A short move from handheld to tabletop can preserve a session that would otherwise end because of grip or neck discomfort.

Use the enlarged map and tutorial replay to reduce memory demands

The April 2026 SEGA update enlarged the in-stage map display and added a menu option to review tutorials you have already seen. Use the larger map when a stage’s branching routes, hidden paths, or return trips are difficult to remember. This is preferable to repeatedly wandering through the same section while tired.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Open the tutorial review when you cannot recall an ability, tool, or movement rule. Replaying the explanation is faster and less error-prone than trying to reconstruct it from memory during combat. The option is also useful after a long break, when the problem is recall rather than difficulty.

Three practical comfort profiles

Situation Difficulty and effects Hardware and habits
Learning the game Apprentice or Novice; camera shake and hit flash off if distracting; outlines on when backgrounds are busy. Use the mode with the clearest image, remap controls before serious progress, and replay tutorials as needed.
Fast attacks are overwhelming Custom with lower attack frequency; reduce enemy damage only if mistakes are also too costly. Keep dodge and guard on natural buttons, use outlines for threat separation, and take breaks between stages.
Long completion sessions Custom tuned to prevent repeated deaths; keep only the visual feedback you can tolerate. Install version 1.21 or newer when available, alternate handheld, tabletop, and TV positions, and use the enlarged map.

The profiles are starting points, not fixed presets. If your eyes are comfortable but your hands are not, change hardware or remapping before reducing challenge. If your hands are fine but incoming attacks blur together, lower attack frequency or enable outlines first.

Troubleshoot discomfort by symptom

Screen movement or flashes cause discomfort

  • Turn camera shake off.
  • Turn hit flash off.
  • Reduce hit stop if impact pauses feel disruptive.
  • Move from handheld to tabletop or TV if the viewing distance or posture is the problem.

You cannot see enemies clearly

  • Enable character outlines.
  • Use the higher-resolution handheld presentation if it is comfortable at your preferred distance.
  • Try TV or tabletop if the portable screen is too small for reliable separation.

Your hands or wrists hurt

  • Remap attack, jump, dodge, and guard to reduce thumb travel.
  • Switch from handheld to a supported controller in tabletop or TV mode.
  • Keep the same logical mapping when changing devices so you do not add a second learning burden.

You are dying because encounters are too fast

  • Use Custom and reduce enemy attack frequency.
  • If each mistake is also too punishing, lower enemy damage.
  • Stay on Apprentice or Novice until the layout and visual settings feel stable.

You are lost or have forgotten a mechanic

  • Use the enlarged map during the stage.
  • Open the tutorial-review option instead of relying on memory.
  • Pause between encounters rather than trying to solve navigation while under attack.

Plan a completion run around the game’s size

Nintendo lists a 12 GB file size and more than a dozen stages for the Switch 2 edition. TechRadar estimates approximately 15–20 hours for full completion based on its review experience; that is an estimate, not a guaranteed playtime. A run of that length magnifies small ergonomic problems, so test your remapping, display mode, and visual effects before committing to every hidden path.

Because the title supports single-system play, the comfort decisions are yours rather than being constrained by a local co-op partner’s display or control setup. Keep the enlarged map available for route planning, review tutorials after breaks, and vary posture across sessions. Most importantly, update before investing in high-completion save slots: SEGA documented the version 1.21 fix specifically for a critical save-data issue at high completion percentages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is and is not established about comfort

The available documentation confirms the settings and hardware modes described above, but it does not provide an independent numeric study of player comfort, accessibility usage, or Switch 2 performance. No universal combination can therefore be presented as objectively best for every player. The reliable approach is to identify whether your limiting factor is challenge pressure, reaction load, visual motion, readability, or posture, then change the matching setting and test it for a full stage.
